Kiki1313 replied to chikesweightlossjourney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello there. I have the lap band and i want a revision to gastric since ive had the band and have had so many probelms with it. My egd revealed i have a hernia. Im so confused because i dont know what this means. I also have bcbs and my copay was 500. Im hoping that im still able to have the surgery but scared they wont cover the revision part of it. I want this band gone. Worst mistake i made to date. Anyway, have you had a weight loss surgery already? -
I love what I see and how I feel now but I struggle with not meeting my goal!?! I had revision from band to sleeve on 1/28/24 I started out at 287 and I'm now at 193. I'm 5'9 and still curvy but LOVING it ????. I fuss with myself about not getting to MY goal which is 180 and my surgeon wants to see me at 160 ???? I feel like I would look like...pardon the phrase...a Crack head!!! ???? Anyone else struggle with this? Do I lose the weight and then feel uncomfortable in my own skin again? Do I do it for my health let's be honest I'm still overweight but beautifully so ????. Anyone else struggle with this????

band to bypass revision with herna?
Kiki1313 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded in September of 2012 and i lost a total of 103 l s. I recently started having much pain and decided to have all the fluid removed from my band. On Friday i had an egd done and they said i have a hernia. I am so confused as i wanted to have a revision to gastric bypass but dont know what they are gonna do now. Had anyone had this type of problem??? -
It's litt more than gastric bypass with a sleeve instead of a pouch. It is fairly new and there isn't much research about the long term success of this procedure or how much weightloss you can achieve and maintain. I hope you won't need a revision for a full DS. If you do Id sue your surgeon.

Was your band removal and revision surgery done at the same time?
Carriejess replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was successful with the band which I have had for 7 years but I am looking forward to a better qaulity of life with the sleeve. I have regained about 45lbs (100lb loss)after band slippage and two pregnancies. I am revising in two weeks, my surgeon completes in a one step process but won't guarantee it depending on if your band has caused significant damage but this is rare. -
The website is www.TrinityMedical.org. I understand there's a new, revised website in the works. I know that they're running a New Year special for $3999.00 - offer ending soon. My Uncle had surgery there and is down 34 pounds his first month. Everything is clean, each patient has a private room with a private bathroom, and there was no pain, no vomiting, no nausea post-op and saw Dr. Gutierrez before surgery and 5 times post-op! Dr. Gutierrez personally pulled my Uncle's drain tube and reviewed his X-ray. Couldn't ask for better service, professionalism and a great quality surgery. His incisions look like paper cuts because all the stitching was done from the inside out and not Frankenstein style stitches like I've seen from patients that came from Almanza while were waiting in X-Ray and sharing experiences. All the staff at Trinity Medical speak English, and super accommodating. This is Obesity Control Center quality at Almanza prices. I am definitely recommending my friends and family to Trinity Medical. I also hear they do Plastics, too. Dr. Gutierrez does a maximum of 5 surgeries per day and we had our nurse/concierge, named Nathan with us 24/7 during our stay. He even went with us to X-ray.

My band is coming out next Thursday and being revised to the gastric sleeve. The surgeon I am using (Dr. Schroder in Richmond, VA) says he sees a lot of lap band patients who are looking for a revision due to complications with the band. He does it in one surgery. In fact, I had pre-op today and he said it only adds an extra 10 minutes to the surgery to take the band out. He removes the band, cleans up the scar tissue, and performs the sleeve. Jennifer -
Band to GB revision, WITHOUT removing the band?
Inizio replied to wicked's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My reason for the revision to bypass was due to the excruciating pain I suffered from the port and the inability to get solid food down a lot of the time. I was in so much pain and was always sick becase of it. I would never even cross my mind to have another procdeure and NOT get this band/port out. It was the root of my problems. If you have the chance to get it out, do it. -
Sleeve to bypass revision

Par1959 you are so right, logging is a key factor in weight loss success for most people. I know that When I am brutally honest with myself not logging my food intake is first on the list of things I haven't been doing also not chewing enough, not waiting between bites and eating to many carbs. This certainly explains my weight gain. I will be having my revision surgery in two weeks to fix the incredible heartburn that I'm having. I'm not looking forward to starting over but I do feel like I have a second chance to relearn everything to keep my weight loss successful. -
Was your band removal and revision surgery done at the same time?

I want the band out - of that I am certain. I am not sure if I want a revision to gastric sleeve at this point especially if it's two separate surgeries. I am 64 and had the band done in 2008. It never worked as promised for anything, especially weight loss. I lost about 75 pounds - 60 of which was from the 6 month pre-op diet and the 2 weeks pre & post op liquid diet. So the band only helped me lose 15 lbs. I have had to have all the fill taken out (I have a 4cc band) due to a trip to the ER with a severe stuck episode. That was in 2009. So, essentially I have this thing in me that doesn't work, causes shoulder pain, and stuck episodes (no rhyme or reason as to food, etc.) which I can now help by making myself throw up. Sometimes just a few bites causes pressure. I am done having this thing in me that does not work, does not aid in weight loss and causes problems. But I just wanted to know how many who had the removal and revision had it done at the same time? -
I just had a lap band to sleeve revision Jan 13. With my lap band (9 years ago) I told most people who knew me. Later regretted it as I had a lot of problems with the lap band and even tho it may have been my imagination I felt all those eyes on me wondering why I lost weight and regained it. A few would ask and some were sincere and some were just plain nosey. So this time the only two people know outside of the clinic I went to: my husband and my niece who took care of me the first week. WHY? There is plenty of time to tell them later. I can decide on an individual basis. It's my business. When I lose enough to show, I can revisit it. If they are my best friends family they will understand and care about me no matter what. I'm 7 days out and no regrets that I didn't tell anyone. In the end it's an individual choice.

I hear you!! I had tricare and was a revision. They told me I had to gain 50 pounds to have the revision from band to bypass (my band eroded) so I gained the weight. Then they said I had to gain another 25. I was a frigging mess! I had worked so hard to lose all my weight with the band to be told I had to gain 75 to have the revision is crazy. My husband praise God knew what it was doing to me mentally.. We ended up just paying the $30,000 out of pocket.. His take is he will get a lot more mileage out of me and my happiness than a new car will.. ???? so I am sitting here 8 months out from my revision with only 3 pounds left to a normal BMI. My BMI pre lapband was 47. Tricare can suck it lol. Good luck and hang in there!!!

Anyone know of Dr De Bruyne Chris
Carriejess replied to susanlondon's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I had my band with dr Chris 7 years ago I lost eight stone and maintained a 21 Bmi easily for years then a regained four after having a slip and then two children very close together. My lapband no longer works and my symptoms are very common in lapbands. Dr Chris is a great surgeon and in four weeks I will be going back to him to have a revision to sleeve. In my experience of being involved in lots of forums I would say that lap bands now have a high risk of complications and if I was you I would consider gastric sleeve first off which is a better lifestyle choice as you can eat all foods but in tiny portions but doenst have malabsorption like the bypass. With lapbands many people have difficulty eating proteins I.e meat and fibrous veggies which is not great if you are trying to maintain a healthy balanced diet. However I am not a doctor and having a lapband helped me lose half my body weight nearly, meet an amazing handsome husband and have two children after being told I would probably not conceive. I don't regret it but I am looking forward to having a better standard of living with the sleeve. Feel free to ask me any questions x -
Approved with a date of Feb 9th!

Hey, We may be surgery twins. I am slated for 9 February, however, my egd is on 29 January. Assuming all goes well, I will have revision. Wishing you well! -
Well, Guys, The count down is for real, now. Though I am extremely excited, I am starting to get very nervous. I still have not submitted my FMLA papers. How is everyone else feeling? I am having a revision for lap band to sleeve.

I've had my band since Oct. 2011 and it has been a nightmare. I'd lose weight if it was so tight I could only have fluids but would have the worst acid reflux. Anytime I tried to eat anything it would just come right back out so I went from 256 to 207 and back up to 236 because they had to take most of the saline out. It's so frustrating! I asked my doctor if I could switch to the bypass and she told me to call her with my new insurance info at the first of the year so I did and got a call that my insurance does cover revision but I need to go in and see the doctor this Thursday to talk in detail and see if I need nutrition classes again. Yikes! I hope everything goes well.

I have a co-worker who had the band almost 6 years ago. She lost 80 pounds and has kept it off. She would not recommend the band. She still has issues with stuff getting stuck. She also said that her surgeon is doing a lot of band to sleeve revisions and he may not do the band anymore. When I went in to talk to my surgeon the woman taking my history asked me which surgery I was interested in. I said either band or sleeve. Her immediate reply is you don't want the band. Both of these contributed to why I did not go with the band. I personally did not want the by-pass. The malabsorption issues and dumping syndrome just scared me. Talk to your surgeon and their staff. Each surgery has its place and what is right for me may not be right for you. I am scheduled for the sleeve on February 2nd.

Hi Cori, Wow - you're in quite a situation! My feeling is that it doesn't feel right for you to jump into either surgery tomorrow without having time to really think it through with a level head and consider the pros and cons and what's best for you. Surgery is such a big deal and you need to be well-prepared in every way. With that big caveat, I'll share some thoughts. The lap band is a safer surgery - significantly lower deaths in the first month after surgery vs the sleeve - about 1 in 2000 for the band vs 1 in 500 for sleeve (these are just sample stats; every study is a little different). Weight loss with the sleeve is a little higher on average, not sure this is exactly right, but I think average weight loss for sleeve is about 60% of excess weight vs about 50% for the band. I'm not sure what the exact stats are, but I think close to 50% of people with bands eventually require another surgery to either fix something with the band or revise to another surgery. I've also seen many reports from people (like me) who converted from band to sleeve that the eating experience is much better with the sleeve. These are just a few pros and cons I can think of in terms of averages experiences. For me, I loved my band for the first 6 months or so. I lost 70 pounds and felt a huge change in my hunger making it very comfortable for me to stick to a plan. But then my band slipped and all went downhill fast. I had a revision surgery which for some reason didn't fix my night reflux issues. I went back and forth with fills and unfills, but ended up with it unfilled. My hunger came back with a vengeance. I struggled and had ups and downs, but in the end over 5 years I gained the 70 back - plus a few more. I revised to sleeve last summer and now I'm slimmer than I've ever been as an adult! 91 down from my highest. My sister got the band the same day as me. She's shorter than me and wasn't as heavy, but she lost about 40 pounds and pretty much kept it off for the last 6 years. But she started having issues recently and had to have the band loosened and has gained a little back, and is contemplating revising to sleeve as well. Gowalking has been tremendously successful with her band! And so has Alex Brecher. @@savoy7658 Revisions may take longer, but I took off 18 days (over the holidays). But, I've seen some people return to work after 1 week. When I went back to work I was really tired at the end of the day for the first week, but by the 2nd week back I was totally back to normal. I'd say to be safe, take 2 weeks if you can. -
