Avoiding Protein Shakes
kids05 replied to JackieOMonroe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the same issue. I basically "dump" whenever I try a protein shake. I can only do the isopure protein water. (16 oz is I think 32g of protein, but $5 a bottle) I live on cottage cheese, and crabmeat, shrimp and greek yogurt. I can also do chicken though and even smashed up a well done pice of burger with pickles and ketchup...gosh I miss a cheeseburger...lol. I tried some reg ice cream last weekend while we were out for the day celebrating at Cold Stone...few bites in...cold sweat, trouble breathing, dizzy...I don't know if its milk or sugar or milk and sugar cause no other dairy has bothered me. Funny thing this sleeve is huh??? A few posts up there are peanutbutter balls that have protein in them...try that. Oh and in the beginning I would buy low sodium cream of mushroom soup and mix in some unflavored protein powder. Hope any of this helps! -
What can i eat .. any ideas
KellyL replied to Hopeful24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 7 wks out and on solids now. I don't know what stage you're dr has you on, but here is my answer to other similar questions: My favorite things to eat right now are the Sam's Choice Stuffed chicken Breasts, they are filled with various things like cheese, mushrooms, spinach, bacon. 34-37g Protein each but I can't eat a whole breast. I make 2 meals out of one. I also like eggs, boiled or scrambled. Pure Protein Bars. Buffalo chicken with greek yogurt and a little bleu cheese dressing. Cottage cheese. String cheese. Refried Beans w/ qeuso mexican dip cheese, shredded colby monterry jack cheese, verde salsa, and greek yogurt. I am getting stuff to make bacon wrapped shrimp soon. Also will be making meatloaf and looking for an easy asian meatball recipe as we speak lol. On the meatloaf and meatballs I am going to freeze a lot for future meals in ziplock bags in small portions. Also I am at my sis's for 4th of July weekend. I have eaten Pork BBQ with white sauce, baked beans, brunswich stew, grilled hotdogs(no bun), etc. All in small amts of course. I can do well with just about any meat as long as it's not dry and i have a sauce or dip for it. I hated dry or overcooked meat pre-op too. I also make mini cheese cakes that I use 2 pkgs cream cheese, 3 eggs, vanilla, and artificial sweetner. My daughter loves these too, because she just had her wisdom teeth cut out. Here's a recent grocery list of mine, I posted in another thread: Eggs String Cheese Provolone cheese slices Swiss cheese slices Shredded cheese(colby-m jack) Cottage cheese Fage Greek yogurt Tuna Chicken(both frozen & canned) Meatballs Sams Choice Stuffed Chicken Brst Refried beans Queso cheese dip Ground chuck Ribeye Shrimp Bacon Taco mix Hidden valley ranch mix au jus sauce (for meatloaf, stews, etc) Cajun spices Pure Protein Bars Bacon Mini pepperoni Cubed Ham Cream cheese Stevia or truvia Peanut Butter Babybel cheese Laughing cow cheese Lipton Diet Green Tea Citrus -
Almost six months out--Head hunger vs body hunger
Foxbins posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I should preface this by saying that I am five and half months out from surgery and I lost my hunger afterwards. Yesterday morning about 7 a.m. I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, and my stomach was growling and rumbling. I realized that my stomach was saying that it was empty since I had not eaten anything in about 16 hours. I thought about what I might have for breakfast--egg, bacon, yogurt, Protein shake, chicken salad--but nothing sounded appealing, because I was not hungry. Empty, yes, but not hungry. However, I can also finish a meal, know that I am near-to-full, and have the thought, "I want ice cream (cake, Cookies, candy, chocolate, etc.) (you will notice I never want any more of what I just ate or something good for me, it's always empty calorie stuff) and I know that I cannot possibly be empty or physically hungry and that's my head hunger trying to tempt me. I have had to learn how to reinterpret my body/mind signals, because before surgery I was hungry (head or body or both) all the time, so I ate all the time. Now I interpret the stomach growling not always as "hungry" but differently depending on the circumstances. My stomach growls now a lot more than it used to and it's not always due to being empty, so I have to figure it out. It means I eat mindfully now, not just shoveling food in to quiet the noise. Sometimes a glass of Water quiets the growls, sometimes it's meal or snack time. The head hunger I can see becoming a problem during maintenance if I am not vigilant, because my head really does want dessert after every meal... -
Failing in the protein department
MeMeMEEE replied to wondering1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have a protein requirement yet, we are supposed to trial them and if it doesn't sit well back off. Having said that, I have gotten 6 grams the first day home, 31,38, 36 and so far today I have 14 in. Milk seems to be bothering me so I am getting some almond milk or soy milk today to try. I am getting some in via Greek yogurt and jello besides the shake - which yesterday I did a half shake and will probably do the same today. Hydration is my goal until my first post op visit at 2 weeks. Hope that helps. Glad you are feeling better!! -
Frustrated... Having a Hard Time w/ So Many Things
54Shirley replied to ChelseaRae2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I first think about my calorie intake for the day, shooting for 800-1200 calorie window, with 60 to 80 G. of Protein So then I figure out my meals. I drink with every meal that I have. It's to painful to try to eat by itself. So I eat some, and drink some, so I don't get stuck. I checked this with my Surgeon, and like he said I am to sensitive ! So if this works, then do it... I eat 3 meals a day, that way.. and a snack ? Well if its wet like light yogurt, I can do it without Water. Even mushies would get stuck for me, and you bet I chew it up well ! So I drink some water. As long as I stay within that window for my calorie intake,,, I'm fine.. Pop is not a good thing because it's carbonated. I drank a glass of ROOT BEER one summer, and I thought it was going to kill me... Could be me though ! But I know he said no pop, alcohol, or chewing gum (could slip down, and get stuck.) So I am a Cheap Date... LOL.. Hope that answers some stuff, that's how the band works for me, and I am very comfterable with it. Shirley. -
the band to the sleeve ?!?!?
Melissannde replied to amyloveslou's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A few ideas/suggestions: Make sure your meat is not dry...or if it is, use something to moisten it to help it slide down. BBQ sauce, ketchup, greek yogurt, mustard.. whatever you like. It's not going to matter all that much on the calorie content of the "food lube" because you're not going to eat all that much of it. I find that having 1 bite of Protein and a bite of a juicy veggie (cucumber, tomato) often works as a food lube too. Double check that you really are taking small bites and chewing well. You could get toddler utensils or a cocktail fork and demitasse spoon. Some suggest chopsticks. Try drinking a cup of hot coffee, tea, or a cup of hot thin soup/broth right before your meal. The warmth can relax the band and make eating denser foods easier. You don't have to wait 30 minutes after drinking the warm liquids to eat.. maybe 2 or 5 minutes...but I've not waited at all and still had good appetite control. Avoid reheating meat in the microwave. Or if you have no other choice, try wrapping or covering the meat in a damp towel (paper or cloth). The reason to avoid the MW is that microwave cooking tends to remove moisture. The damp towel will help prevent some moisture loss. If you decide on an unfill and other than the meat issue you're doing well.. I'd ask for a tiny unfill. .2cc's would be my suggestion, but this is just based on my experience of tiny fills. Your bariatric team will know your case and if they suggest more.. well.. your call. Hope you get some relief.. it's no fun getting stuck so often. And not good for the band if you're having to bring the stuck substance back up frequently. -

I'm in the same boat, my fill was wednesday. I was pretty good until yesterday. I had ham for lunch and then some tomato. The tomato made my stomach acidy. I'm trying prilosec first seeing I didn't have a problem at first. Im not hungry at all and only threw up today when tried to eat yogurt while still sort of stuck. Protien shakes go down fine so I'm not starving.

Hard to make yourself eat when for so long on diets you were trying not to!

It will get much easier. When I feel like that I go for cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. -
Bummed and angry
OKCPirate replied to OctoberRust127's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@Dub - Take heart, I had my son and four of his college buddies over at my house to watch football Saturday and I grilled up one heck of a spread and they even liked my re-fried bean dip with Greek yogurt. So life is great albeit in smaller quantities. -
I'm with you! I thought for SURE I was healing way more slowly than anyone else ever in the history of being banded! But I really turned a corner around 6 days post-op, and have felt a small percentage better everyday since! I looked on here, surprised I didn't read about more people being in tons of pain and really uncomfortable like I was (port pain for me, minimal gas pain), and really was bummed with myself for not progressing faster. Stick with the small activity, keep in mind you're barely eating any calories! Of course you have no energy. Once you're able to get in more full liquids (I highly recommend focusing on Protein shakes/carnation instant breakfast/greek yogurt to get your protein up), you'll start to feel better. Promise!

My experience was/is just like KellyW74 above. (In fact, she recently gave me some suggestions to help with the gurgling.) I'm about 5 weeks out and I still get that gurgling for about an hour after I eat or drink a shake. And like Kelly said, often I get the runs shortly after. What I discovered is that anything with MILK in it is bad news!!!! Even soy milk tends to be a little troublesome. Now that I am eating soft foods I've discovered that things like fish and chicken seem to work well. I can tolerate yogurt a little better too and actualy even string cheese. No other milk products and definitely not shakes with milk in them. In the early days I had broth with unflavored protein, such as UNJURY. It's just that I am totally sick of it now :-) So, it may be that you developed a lactose intolerance - which my understanding is that it can be temporary in some cases. Also, you are more recently sleeved so things may just settle down on their own in a few more days. Like the other Kelly said above, the acid reducers are really important. I take prylosec (sp?) once per day. Also, my first week to week and a half my MD prescribled Ranglan, which is an antinausea med. That really helped in the early days too. Hang in there. It will pass. We all seem to go through these various phases but somehow move on. I guess we have to be patient and roll with the punches... as tough as it is. Good luck!!!!!! Hope you get to the bottom of this!!!

HOW MUCH IN ONE MEAL
Dave_NW replied to LookatmeNow34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Something's haywire. I'll bet if you go back and ask your surgeon, you'll find out they said (or meant) 3 OUNCES of Protein, not three BITES of food, per meal. Three bites is just crazy talk. I eat around a cup to a cup and a half per meal, depending on what it is. Today is a light food day for me, but here's what I've eaten today: Breakfast: RTD Premier Nutrition chocolate shake. 160 calories, 30g protein. Snack: Half of a "Naked" Breakfast sandwich. That's a fried egg, slice of cheese, and breakfast sausage patty, but no English muffin. Half is about 150 calories, and has about 20g protein. Lunch: Small serving of Wendy's chili. 220 calories, 17g protein. Dinner: Half-sized Wendy's berry Almond chicken salad. 270 calories, 21g protein. beverages have been coffee, iced tea, and lots of Water. Total for the day: 800 calories, and 88g protein. Easy. And if I need a snack later this evening, I'll probably have yogurt, or maybe a cheese stick or two. I still have room in my daily count, so even if I have both, I'm still well under 1200 calories for the day. Dave -
First, you shouldn't compare yourself to anyone's weight loss. I had my surgery September of last year and I know folks who have lost more than me who had their surgery 6 months after. Does it bother me? Nope. Because I know that I'm losing at the pace that's right for my body... If you're doing everything correctly and following the rules, you're body will act accordingly. Don't stress over others weight loss. You'll set yourself up for failure As far as the feeling in your esophagus, that's what I like to call a soft stop. It's my band telling me to prepare to stop eating. LOL. It happens more with denser food, like chicken or steak or dryer food. I don't get it as much when I eat slider food like yogurt or cottage cheese. When I get that feeling, I start to take smaller bites in between longer periods of time or I just stop eating. It really matters how much I've eaten. If I didn't get the calories in that I plan for that meal, I may take longer to eat by doing what I just said. Another soft stop signal is hiccuping. You should be very proud of yourself and your weight loss.. Don't beat yourself up because it's not coming off fast. Sometimes slower is better because your getting your body used to eating the correct way. Take care, Julia

Smoked Salmon Spread This is great to eat as a snack or small meal depending on restriction with some veggies, a couple reduced fat crackers, pretzels or how you would eat any tuna or crab salad. Blend the following in a cuisinart until smooth: - 8 oz reduced fat cream cheese - 8 oz nonfat plain greek yogurt - 1 tsp lemon pepper (mine is a gourmet blend that has salt & garlic in it - you can add a little of these to add flavor) Add & Pulse till well blended: - 8 oz Smoked Salmon, chopped (I used 1/2 a 1lb pkg smoked sockeye salmon from costco - the kind used for lox, not the drier kind - 1 sm sweet onion, diced This obviously makes a lot - about 3.5 c, but I'll serve it as a dip for guests or take some to work. You could also easily 1/2 it I just like to get rid of containers and use things up. Nutrition: 7 - 1/2 c. servings 188 cal. 19 g. Protein 10 - 1/3 c. servings 132 cal. 13 g. protein I ate 1/3 c. tonight with .5 oz (12) snyder's of hanover butter pretzel snaps (the pretzel squares) which only added 60 cal. and 1.5 g protein. This is just about the same cal and protein of a high protein chocolate slim fast shake. Last suggestion / note: This is the consistency of a spread/ dip. You could use the entire 1 lb package of salmon without adjusting the other ingredients (more of a tuna salad consistency) which would change the nutrition to: 1/2 cup serving - 219 cal. 25 g. protein

Liquids the First Couple of Weeks
RedheadGirl replied to Melissa3939's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've noticed that every Dr. has a different liquid diet. I was on Clear liquids for the first 7 days then I was able to move to liquids like creamy Soups, cream of wheat, yogurt, smoothies...... I would run if by your Dr. and ask him about it. -
Any tips for returning to work?
Amanda131 replied to Escape_Pod's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Escape- I think returning early so that you have the option of a couple of 1/2 days is a great idea. I am not sure how long you have been off. I took 5 days off before returning to my job as a highschool administrator. I was able to dictate my schedule so I made the first few days mostly office work. I was able to work full 8 hour days the first two days but I took a 1/2 day on Wednesday for the first two weeks. Having that middle of the week half-day to rest and recover was a huge lifesaver for me. I would also suggest evening naps when you get home for the first couple of weeks (if you can manage it). That 30-45 minutes of rest really helped me as well. I was very tired from weeks 1-4 as my body adjusted to the extreme change in calories. As for what to have at work with you, I had plenty of G2, Protein shakes, cup of Soups (tomato and cream of chicken) and greek yogurt. The cup of soups and yogurt worked really well at disguising that I had weight-loss surgery since those are common things co-workers had for Snacks and drinks. As you get into mushies, I also had 100 calorie cheese packets, etc. Best of luck to you! Amanda -
I could really use some help :S
Rev Me Up! replied to lily'ssleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You may want to keep an eye out for Protein Powder - maybe you can buy some on-line? If you can't find any, drink milk, liquid yogurt, and kefir to get Protein and calories in. You can make a smoothie with some yogurt that might help you out - as long as it is completely smooth. Ask your doctor if there are any supplements locally that he can recommend. Good luck-- -
Question about hunger after being sleeved
juzmejnee posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on June 23rd. And eat about 3-4oz each meal. I have like half a yogurt for snack, or a hard boiled egg. I track everything i eat at myfitnesspal.com and seem to be under 700 calories everyday, and my carbs remail pretty low. My question is, i still seem to be hungy. I am on a PPI, and take it everyday. I read that the ghrelin hormone takes a few weeks / months to be out of your system. So im wondering will i have less hunger as i go along? Im afraid that if i still have this hunger, and our tummys stretch over time, i will eventually gain weight. Anyone ever go through this, and stopped feeling hungry at like 6 months post op or something ( please say yes!) thank you -
Restriction following surgery???
kiz replied to Neugene's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congratulations on your band. The Realize band is supposed to be placed in empty, so that's normal. I had tight restriction for the first few weeks from swelling. After that, I had less restriction, but I was didn't have a problem with out of control hunger while only eating three 1/2 cup to 1 cup meals per day, heavy on protein with an added healthy, low/no cal snack. By the fourth week, I was feeling more hunger, and doctor had me substitute my snack with a high protein snack, such as tuna, egg, or Greek yogurt. That satisfied me, and I had my first fill at six weeks out. Two weeks later, I had another fill. The second fill was just a few days ago, so I'm still on liquids, but I can definitely tell I have more restriction. It's still not to the level I had the first week out of surgery, but I'm not sure that I'd want to be that tight on a full-time basis. -
How should I prepare?
54Shirley replied to BaileyRose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get a Pill splitter/crusher for your pain meds, or if you take meds, ask your Doc can you get them in liquid form. Mine did that for me. Jell -o, Sugar Free Pudding, Light Yogurt, Soups (NOTHING HEAVY ! LOOK FOR SOUPS IN A BOX, I FOUND IT IN THE ORGANIC AREA BUT EVERY PLACE IS DIFFERENT. IF YOU FIND A "RED PEPPER SOUP", YOU FOUND THE RITE SOUPS. ALSO THAT IS FANTASTIC ! ! ! I bought the Mushroom, and Red Pepper Soup., Protein Drinks, Pop cycles, and what ever is in liquid form, that you like. -
Protein drinks post surgery
guinessgirl77 replied to cyndymot's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm three days post-op and just started full liquids today. I bought a brand of drinks called Isopure. Its like a fruit drink but in 20oz has 40 grams of Protein. In addition to that I bought unflavored soy Protein powder (has less cholesterol than whey protein) to add to everything I am eating like Soups, yogurt and Cereal. I had to get off the low carb slim fast. I was so sick of it after the pre-op diet. I plan on mixing my own Protein Drinks with the powder later. Also, a lot of people really like a brand called unjury. Its medical grade protein and it comes in flavors and i've heard its really good. Good Luck! -
What are or were your favorite foods to "eat" on the liquid stage?
Cindy C replied to RedheadGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I pretty much lived on jello, yogurt, carnation instant breakfast and broth. The week before surgery I put chicken and vegetables in the crock pot. When it was done, I strained it and threw away the solids. Then I put the broth in small containern the freezer in preparation for my 2 weeks of clear liquids. -
