  1. When I saw the original post I actually got excited. I know that sounds strange but I had found a lot of other people who had been put on diets before adolescence. (A bit of background, I’m a trans guy so I was raised female, with all the body image baggage that comes with that gender. Though I am very much aware that boys get body image pressure too, I understand by personal experience what it’s like growing up as a girl in our society.) I was 5 years old for my first diet. My mom got the diet from my pediatrician! I wasn’t obese. I was a little chubby but active and healthy. I look at pictures of me then and I look like a normal kid with a face full of freckles and round, pink cheeks. My mom had this terrible fear of me not being popular or well-liked. I am naturally an extreme introvert and, honestly, more than a little weird. I couldn’t care less about being popular. I was perfectly happy to be left mostly alone. From kindergarten on I was put on diet after diet. I would yo-yo up and down the scale, always becoming more and more overweight with each diet. I developed eating disorders (surprise) that eventually just landed me with binge eating disorder by my early 20’s. I had a few years of homelessness and food insecurity in my 20’s that just made my emotional attachment to food more intense. By my 30’s I was solidly obese. By my early 40’s I had hit a top weight of 408lb at a height of 5’ 4.5”. So, now at 46, I am dangerously morbidly obese. I look back to that chubby little 5 year old and can’t help but wonder, if they had just left me alone would I have still ended up obese? Well, I’m currently down to 340lb and my gastric bypass is scheduled for July 9th. What happened to me in as a child was wrong but there is nothing I can do about it now. I have to focus on my future. A future that, with a lot of hard work and some luck, will be healthier than my past. Have a great week everyone!

    7 days out and struggling

you're down to your original surgery weight because, like most of us, you probably "gained" weight while in the hospital because of all the IV fluids. It can take up to a week for them to work their way out of your system. I've heard of people "gaining" as much as 10 lbs while in the hospital! fluids go through our stomachs really fast since our pyloric valves were bypassed, so I'd be very surprised if you could stretch your stomach from fluids. Maybe you could if you REALLY slammed them, but 40-50 oz over the course of the day isn't "really slamming" them. I've never heard of anyone doing that from drinking fluids, and we were never warned we could stretch our stomachs from that. So...I'm not sure what to say...

What is your 1st major milestone?

Onederland was my first milestone. 180 which is the weight I can remember that I was when I did bowling league and other social things and enjoyed them is next. I hope to get to 160 which will be a normal BMI for me but I would be thrilled with 180 if I can stay there.

    Weight loss stall

    1) unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", your weight loss so far is very normal. Most of us lose 15-25 lbs in the first month after surgery. Yes - you will find people who lose more or less than that, but they're the exception. You're in that range, so you're perfectly normal! 2) you're in the infamous "three-week stall". Almost all of us go through that. It's not ALWAYS the third week, but it is for most (hence the name) - but it can really happen any time within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale if you need to. It'll last 1-3 weeks, and then you'll be on your way again. If you want to read more about it, do a search on this site for the three week stall. You will find about 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding...). It literally does happen to almost everyone. No changes necessary - just stick to your program and wait it out. It WILL break. oh - just re-read your post. Thirty grams of protein is too low. Most surgeons recommend at least 60. So THAT is a change you should make. Otherwise, you're good. Just hang tight!

Oh, Just Another Plastics Story pt 2

Plastics update! It’s been so long I forgot about these threads Mood: Happy Current weight:154 (no measurements as I can’t find my tape measure) I’m still very happy with my outcomes but obviously I see little things I want fixed. I would love more fat grafting to my behind and some scar revisions as most of my scars became hypertrophic (I knew the risk and it was still worth it - I just need to have them revised at some point) I think that happens to many people post plastics. Plastics is probably just the next rabbit hole. videos of this years swim suit and showing scars (WLS and plastics) FullSizeRender.mov FullSizeRender.mov

    Weight loss stall

Sounds like you need more protein (at least 60 g per day) and more water/liquid (at least 64 oz per day). If you can, talk to your nutritionist to come up with good parameters that are personalized to suit you. Also, 22 pounds is pretty good weight loss so far, so do not stress too much about that. Focus on nutrition and following your surgeon’s plan/guidelines. Good luck! 😊

    Weight loss stall

I have only lost 22 lbs, since surgery on 4/13/21 the past 10 days have been no weight loss. Can eat more things now, but wondering if I need to go back to 90 grams of protein per day- right now I’m at 30-60 and eat a small meal at night. Haven’t had sugar in a long time. Haven’t been drinking much water either. Any thoughts out there?
  9. Tomorrow is my official week since having gastric bypass and I’m struggling. I’m only down to my ore surgery weight and I don’t understand why. I also have right side pain that makes it hard to do things. I was doing great on just liquids and getting about 40-50 ounces a day and my surgical nurse called and was not happy I was getting that much and told me I might stretch my pouch out. She also told me I needed to add in the yogurts and creamed soups so I get 24-30 ounces of full and then 24-30 ounces of clear. I started adding in more full items and I can barely get any ounces of either now because I feel so full/sick. Is this common? Am I doing something wrong?

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I’m so nervous about calories at this point. My dr told me to go to 800 calories but I feel like it’s too much and might stall my weight loss? Am I being neurotic about this? So many people are doing 600-650 calories a day, even a year after surgery. (My surgery 4/21, HW: 206, CW 180.6)

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I just had my 5 week check up and dr told me that with the rapid weight loss it makes your body tired, it's fighting it. Other than that all is good with me 😁

What is your 1st major milestone?

Love the idea! My milestones were/are: 1. Being under 40 BMI -done 2. Losing 100 lbs- done 3. Being “overweight” (just reached this!) 4. Unsubscribing from Torrid and Lane Bryant emails- done 5. Fitting in my wedding rings- done 6. Finishing a couch to 5k app- just 1.5 weeks away! 7. Losing 150 lbs- I’m getting closer! 8. Hitting a normal weight - still a little way off from this but still working toward it I never planned for some milestones that were huge for me like fitting in the conference room chairs at work, being able to cross my legs, buckling my seatbelt without struggle, etc. Oh, but a huge milestone I forgot- onederland! And I’m 6.2 lbs from it, but who’s counting right?

    Apps After Weight Loss Surgery

I’ve used SparkPeople for years (even before WLS) and I still use it now post op in maintenance. I tried MyFitnessPal but didn’t like it. Im not sure how similar it is to other apps but it does also have a website version (same login info) that offers groups, personal mail, blog posts from members, along with tracking quality of life measures (sleep, stress, etc.), and inches as well as weight (can track in app). I can scan food barcodes, add items not listed, add meals from the SparkRescipes app, and add water intake and exercise as well as read articles, post updates and pictures of progress and adjust some settings. With the nutrition tab (to track food) I can even see a macro breakdown by meal if I click the 3 dots to the right side as well as at the bottom. The nutrition details for the day lets me see where I’m at with tracked vitamins and minerals as well as fiber and sodium. It’s a great way to see what I can do a little different to hit goals the next day. It’s not perfect by any means but I love the community support and ease of use so I’ve stuck with it.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

@blueslily Such beautiful self care! I have these pink denim pants that fit again and I've been wearing them. A few of my smaller jeans fit but are less comfortable because they're still snug. But my two largest pairs of jeans got holes in them last week - why oh why do they rip when I've LOST weight?? So its a good motivator to make those smaller jeans fit better so I can be comfortable again!
  15. My mother was always a Yo-Yo dieter and still is at 74. Sometimes it was 25-30 lbs. and others 80-100 lbs. I was chubby as a kid and my mom was always trying to put me on a diet. I remember she made me make a chart in a notebook to track my calories when I was only 12 yrs. old. She would look it over every day to make sure I was doing it correctly. I was sneaking snacks at school, and after school I would go to the convenience store which was the bus stop for snacks like chips, cookies, and candy bars. Oh how I loved junk food. She couldn't understand why I wasn't losing weight, instead gaining. I had to weigh in once a week and write it in the notebook. If I didn't lose that week, she would ground me. For punishment she would make me exercise. Then she would take away food from my meals, making me eat fewer calories. My sister who was skinny would call me fatso, and other not so nice names, and my mom wouldn't do anything about it. My grandfather (mothers father) was relentless and always talked about my weight my entire life. He would always say that it "looked like I put on a few pounds". He did the same to my mom. He finally stopped doing it when I was in my 30's and confronted him about it. I told him that I didn't want to hear his comments about my weight and it was none of his business. He apologized and told me he didn't realize it bothered me so much and he was only joking. Yeah OK. I was also made fun of in school and high school and was not one of the popular girls because of my weight issues. I struggled very hard with this. I didn't have a boyfriend like the other girls because I was too fat. The kids would put "kick me" signs on my back and as I walked down the hallway between classes I would get kicked and if I fell down they would all laugh at me as I tried to pick up my books. It was traumatizing. When I would go home crying to my mom, she would tell me that I have to lose weight if I wanted to "fit in". I could go on and on about my not so nice childhood with weight issues. I will stop here because it is getting too emotional for me. I am 51 yrs. old and still have flashbacks of my younger days. It is very depressing. All I can say is that it sucks to grow up thinking that I was never good enough. It has followed me into my adult life. I am working on it along with other stuff. Even though I have lost weight. I still can hear the rude comments in my head. I don't think it will ever go away.

    2 months out, fluid issues?

My clothes fit a bit better, but IIRC it's very hard to gain muscle mass? Like people bust butt in the gym for it, and I haven't been working *that* hard.

    2 months out, fluid issues?

Miratia, that’s awesome that you’ve added weight training but remember that muscle weighs more than fat. So if you’re building muscle the scale could go up but you’re burning more fat at the same time. Are your clothes fitting better? I use the fit of my jeans vs a scale. 😉
  18. My childhood experience was similar. My Dad despised fat people and was very vocal about it. He made a kind of "mental exception" for me because he loved me, but of course, I applied every disdainful thing he said about fat people to myself. My mom was thin and obsessed about staying that way. She was always suggesting diets or strategies for me to lose weight. It was very hard growing up in that household and retaining any kind of self-esteem or confidence. I think my shopping habit dates back to my upbringing - my parents loved to dress really nicely but because I was big, I was always kind of dumpy by comparison. My parents were not bad people, but they were flawed, broken human beings. In my Dad's case, his mother was physically abusive and she was heavy-set. I'm guessing his disdain of fat people started right then. My Mom's mother abandoned her and SHE was heavy-set. So as I got older and understood some of the roots of their attitudes, I forgave them and healed somewhat from all the childhood trauma. Ironically, they both passed away before my surgery, so they never saw me thin. They'd be ecstatic, LOL.

    Can We Talk About...Birth Control?

I think the type of pill makes a big difference in weight gain. Pills that have several different levels of hormones throughout the month may be worse, and are also worse if you have migraines or PMDD. At least that was what I was told. I've been taking birth control pills continuous cycling (I don't take the sugar pills) for more than a decade so I never get my period at all because I would get terrible mood issues (I have bipolar disorder), migraines, nausea, cramps, etc when I got my period. I am so terrified of having to stop the pill for surgery. I am considering getting an IUD when I stop the pill. I'm not at risk of pregnancy because I don't have sex, but I hate having my period.

    Dating post WLS and PS

I did online dating a lot many years ago. I got one very good relationship out of it. We eventually stopped dating, but we're still very close (I'm visiting him this weekend - it's complicated). After that guy and I broke up I met another guy and we went out for about a month until he broke up with me because he wasn't attracted to my body type - and that was after I had just lost 100 lbs. I was devastated. Of course, we're still friends, and I met some wonderful people through him. I don't know where people meet if not online. I work from home, I don't go to religious services, and I'm no longer in college. I'm definitely not going to hang out in bars, since I don't drink and I can't hear a darned thing in loud places. Maybe after I lose weight if I'm feeling secure enough I'll try online dating again, but I still am very picky. I am happy with my complicated relationship with my ex-boyfriend (the one I'm visiting) except that he doesn't like to travel and that's my passion.

    Help

if you're still seeing your bariatric team, I'd start there. Or if not, is it possible to see them again? Otherwise, if you're not still tracking your food intake, start there. Track for a couple of weeks to figure out what your average calorie intake is now. Then try cutting back by 100 calories or so for another couple of weeks. If that doesn't do the trick, cut back by another 100 calories. Rinse and repeat. Eventually you'll find the level where you'll start losing weight. also, start doing some of things we did that first year after surgery (NOT all the way back to shakes and purees - I mean how we ate after the first couple of months - focusing mostly on protein and non-starchy vegetables. Then if you have room, maybe a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb). if you're having trouble with hunger while cutting back, add in more vegetables - I try to eat vegetables with every meal when I'm trying to lose (I don't always with breakfast, but I DO blend a cup of fresh spinach or kale in with my morning protein shake to make up for it). I also always keep raw veggies (with a dip made from plain Greek yogurt and ranch dressing mix), sugar free popsicles, and sugar free Jello around, too. Healthy fats like avocado and peanut butter or a handful of nuts can also help with the hunger - but just have a small portion of those since they're pretty high in calories. good luck with this. I know it's tough - I'm battling a 10-lb COVID gain right now and I know it isn't easy, but people do it... At least you're catching it at 40 lbs while it's still do-able oh btw - I know a lot of people who've regained who've had success with Weight Watchers, Keto, and/or intermittent fasting - so those might be options for you, too...

    Insulin Worries after DS

Your PCP may or may not have much experience with weight loss surgery. What about your endocrinologist? I doubt very much that they would not check your blood sugar before sending you home without your insulin and other meds, as @RickM said. But talk to your surgery center about what your PCP said and your concerns, but don't cancel your surgery. Even if you can't immediately go off your meds, there are lots of other health benefits to surgery and you might in time be able to go off the meds. The goal in life isn't to have the fewest pills; it's to live the best life, with or without pills. I take about 18 pills a day, none of which I will be able to stop after surgery because they are for a condition that is not caused by my weight. (The meds cause weight gain, but that's another issue.) I am still having surgery, because it affects my quality of life to be so heavy, and is going to lead to other health problems down the road.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hi April Sleevers, I had a fun victory moment during the weekend. I've lost weight, but had not really made any adjustments to the clothes that I was wearing. In many postings on this site, they encourage you not to spend much money on clothes during this process because, depending on how much weight you are loosing, you might have to keep replacing clothes. Im going through this process with a focus on improving my health versus racing for a reduction in my weight numbers. I had not really thought about clothes size changes much until I was looking for something in my closet and looked at "the other side" which is where I have tucked away smaller size clothes that I could no longer fit but was hopeful that one day I could wear again. Everyone has that section in your closet or drawers, right? Hahahaha. 😉Well, this weekend I perused that section in my closet and drawers and found some clothes that are one size smaller than my current size that fit nicely. I made a big pile and washed a couple loads of laundry. I reorganized my drawers and closet to include these one size smaller clothes that I can now include in my regular wardrobe. It felt very validating. They are all summer clothes so its perfect timing. And, it was nice to reminisce about earlier times with those clothes. And even better, I did not have to spend any money! 🤗 I have a few clothing items that are two sizes smaller. I just left them tucked away for later during this process. 🙂 Anyone else go shopping in your closets or drawers so far during this process? I'm at the 7 week mark.
