  1. For the first little while it can be hell, which is called lapband hell for a reason. You have to portion out food and becareful what you take in. Some of the hunger is head hunger, so is real. What I did what if I thought I was hungry I would drink 8-10 oz of Water, after 5 min if I was still hungry I would eat a small healthy snack. It's a work in progress and each min isn't easy, but it does get easier as you go. Hang in there!

    Drinking wine

my doctor said after 30 days. I was on vacation on day 19 post op and I had a few drinks over a 3 day period. I felt fine. But, I can no longer drink as I did in the past. I was able to drink two glasses of wine but I drank very slowly and it took me about 2 hours to finish...and I felt like I drank much more.
  3. I have my surgery on April 10. I have been nervous since weird little aches and pains. I have been second-guessing myself a lot. However reading all of these post really brings inspiration. I am thankful to have sites like these to help support me. Good luck to all the fellow sleepers out there! We can do this!

    Cereal and granola question

I love the original Kashi Go Lean (not the Crunch). It has 13 grams Protein, 10 grams fiber, and only 1 gram fat in one cup. A little high in carbs (30), but it's only a portion of what I'm allowed, so I'm careful the rest of the day. I eat it with almond milk, and it's very satisfying.
  5. My surgery is 2/19 and my NUT put me on Atkins until 2 weeks before, then I have to switch to liquid. But - since starting Atkins I feel like I smell badly. Like BO or onions or something. Anyone else have this experience?
  6. Madeline, Several things I don't know, such as your age and relative health prior to surgery. I am 64 and had lots of problems, such as diabetes getting worse, etc. I was 180 # overweight, and have read that recovery is tied to initial weight, age, and pre-surgical health. For me, there would have been no way to go on a trip such as you describe at 3 weeks post surgery. I was still sore inside (treated with Tylenol), I was still needing lots of extra sleep, and had just started mushy phase. My digestion was still problematic, frequent bathroom breaks required. However, people are very different, age, health etc. My gut level, though is that it is not realistic to have such a long trip, given what major re-routing of "innards" has occurred. My healing, at 10 weeks post is much better than even two weeks ago. I was able to gently start my aerobic swimming at 6 weeks, but it did make me sore, but now am at 75% workout and maintaining well. Good luck. Thanks, john
  7. I was sleeved on 10/11/12 and I could care less to ever eat. I make myself but I can't eat more than 1/4-1/2 cup of anything and that is pushing it. Things don't taste the same. I was a big water drinker but now it tasted like metal.

Diet before surgery going too well?

@@chrispina, I had that debate too. For me, the decision came back to statistics from a clinical trial on long term weight loss that my primary care physician showed me, which I have posted below: Dietary/lifestyle therapy provides <5 kg (11 lbs) weight loss after 2-4 y, pharmacologic therapy provides 5-10 kg (22 lbs) weight loss after 1-2 y, and surgical therapy provides 25-75 kg (55-165 lbs) weight loss after 2-4 y. Weight loss of > or =5% baseline weight is not consistently associated with improvements in cardiovascular risk factors. The conclusions very clearly showed that I was much more likely to have success via WLS. Link to the study abstract is below. Rumbling Tummy

Hi everyone When I first had my surgery 3 weeks ago my stomach rumbled in the hospital. Since then it has gotten much better. But in the last few days it has started up again. Very gassy! When I went for my post op appointment the doctor said one of my incisions was slightly infected and put me on liquid antibiotics. I guess that could be it? Has anyone else experienced this? Plus I'm not able to get in much more than 20oz of liquid daily. And Protein maybe 40gm. Any advice would greatly be appreciated! Surgery was 10/18

Approval Anxiety is Getting to Me

I have Aetna also, although the policies due differ depending on your employer. My surgeon gave me specific forms for each different qualifier to complete (primary physician, psychologist, nutritionist). So after the 4 months needed for my policies qualifications, I faxed my surgeon the paperwork and they wrote a letter to the insurance company and filed the paperwork. I was approved in about 10 days Maybe all the paperwork from your primary is too much and needs to be simplified. Good luck - keep us posted
  11. Hi all, I am not often a poster, but I figured that if there was any group I might feel comfortable with, this should be the one. My name is Gary. I have a marginal BMI (39) for the surgery, but enough co-morbidities to make the grim reaper drool on his scythe. Thus my HMO gracefully allowed my band. Its been 10 days and I though I am only on the liquid diet, I am chafing at the bit to expand my intake. I actually gained 10 pounds of Fluid during my 36 hours in the hospital, and lost that and another 6 or 7 in the 8 days since. Since I am only at about 500 calories, I have stopped losing, but I hope that will change with the next diet phase soon. I see my nutritionist tomorrow. Anyway, I look forward to reading all your stories, comments and concerns. Just my opinion... I could be wrong! Good luck everyone.
  12. I get up every morning at 5:15 and surf the web for about an hour. I head to the bathroom, get undressed and weigh myself, then I take my shower. I wake up the wife, then head to have my 4oz Breakfast. About 9:00 at the office I have a HUGE cup of coffee with artificial sweetener and very little artificial creamer. At 10:00 I have a 16.9oz bottle of Water with a Special K Protein packet added (Pink lemon aid - YUMMY!) At noon I have my 4oz lunch. At 1:00 I have another bottle of water with Special K protein added (lemon iced tea this time around). At 3:00 I have another large beverage - usually coffee or water. At 6:00 I have my 4oz dinner. This routine seems to be working - I'm going down about 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound minimum daily since I've fallen into this. Anyone else have any routines they want to share?

    Passed psych eval :)

@@Qtpie28 my doc told me not to gain any weight but loosing 5%, 10% wasn't required some docs/insurance do require that you loose 5% , 10% of your initial weight weighing 350 lbs you must loose either 35 lbs or 17.5 but, on the other hand the more you loose pre op, the better obviously that means you have all the less to loose post op follow all the necessary rules for WLS practice as you get ready for the big day these are rules you will be following for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life good luck kathy

    April 10th 2017

I'm doing really well today. My weightloss seems to be zipping along. I'm not sure what's normal for most people at this stage though. Once I figured about the super tiny sip thing, I've had no pain. It's still annoying to have to be sipping, honestly, every 5 minutes to get my 64 oz water and two 11 oz protein shakes in. I've been walking ~1 mile every day, but in honor of Earth Day, my best friend and I went for a little 3-mile hike at a nearby national park. It went really well; today was definitely the first day since surgery that I feel like myself. I did take a 3.5 hour nap (sleep?) in the afternoon because I was a little tired after the hike and grocery shopping. I'm all for a support group on here for fellow April 10-ers! I advance to full liquids Monday. I feel anxious about it. Food feels VERY MUCH like the enemy to me. And having zero hunger feels like my (unwillingly) fat girl Heaven. My plan is to simply acknowledge my anxiety about having to eat again and follow exactly the plan given to me by the nutritionist. I bought plain fat free kiefer and two Trader Joe's soups today in preparation for full liquids.
  16. One has to rely on will power and coping strategies to manage diet compliance, and your initial fill likely will not provide you with a significant amount of restriction. Head hunger is a part of the recovery process...and you need to be able to use tools such as distraction with a project or exercise or drinking your necessary "free fluids" to manage it. You are likely also able to eat many of the foods you previously enjoyed, but are not on the approved list of healthy food choices post op. Just because you can eat those things does not mean that it is proper to give yourself permission to do it! Plateaus are a normal part of the weight loss process...and I have reached them periodically with every approximately 10 pounds of weight loss. I believe Mis73 should have some good posts on this topic in the archives. She has discovered, at least for her case that by varying the amount of calories she has daily she can break through a plateau. Look for them for additional information... As I don't count calories, only measure portions by volume, I simply use exercise and try to vary it. Eventually you do get off the plateau, but some people are more patient than others...and I have become a patient person! Shaking up your routines, both with eating and the type and speed of your exercise should help. The body does adapt itself to routines...and that's when the plateau typically occurs. I hope this information will help you...best wishes...

    Haven't told my hubby :-(

smarquezrn, I am married with one 19-month old daughter, and my husband has been absolutely the best support I could have ever asked for. He has come to all my Dr. appointments, put up with sitting in waiting rooms like you wouldn't believe ... He has always loved me no matter what (I was quite obese when we got married), but I know he also wants me to be happy, and especially healthy. I want to have more children, and see them grow up. I want to be there for everything. That's the bottom line... All I can say is that you can only do what you can do. You can't make your man support you, and you can't make him feel more secure. Only he can decide if he is secure enough to want you to be happy. If this is something that you feel strongly about because of your desire to be healthy and happy, then it's obviously something that you should do. However, if your guy is not supportive, what is really behind that? Why doesn't he want you to be happy and healthy? Is it really just his insecurity about you finding another man? I'm not judging or anything - those are just questions that I would ask myself if I were in your position. I hope you get it sorted out. Take care, Sarah H.
  18. Hey Tamz, I had my surgery on May 25th, they took my drain tube out on May 27th before I went home. It is very normal for it to be sore at your stage, mine was tender for about 10 days. My stitches were removed on the 11th day and it is very important to use a saline wash like a product called wound wash. You need to do this two to three times a day. We were not allowed to use any petroleum based products like neosporin on the incisions. Mine have healed nicely and are no longer tender. I too was concerned about the protein at your stage but the Doc said get the liquids in, the protein will come later. If you become dehydrated, the protein is the last of your worries. I know you have heard it a thousand times but sip, sip, sip. The best way to monitor if you have a leak is you would feel real bad and your fever will go up. I took my temperature everyday for three weeks. My temp never got over 98.4 degrees and I never felt bad. You are doing fine. I was able to sleep on both sides just 2 weeks after surgery so the pain will go away. Keep us posted.

    Binge eating

It is absolutely possible to still binge eat after surgery. Not at first. But eventually, yes. That's why it's SO important to do the hard work to deal with your binge eating disorder as the underlying root of your weight, and not ignore it. I would highly recommend finding an eating disorder therapist and working with them religiously throughout the process. I started meeting with one at 10 months post op and have been going to her weekly since then (currently 3 years post op). I know without a doubt I would have regained the weight I lost by now if I wasn't working so hard at the underlying causes. I also highly recommend the books by Geneen Roth. She deals with this a lot and her books were life-changing for me. It is a REALLY good sign that you are thinking about these things now. The more you are proactive, the better long term success you will have.

    Had my sleeve yesterday!

I've been using the strips but they're not helping as much as they do for others and I walk but it doesn't get rid of the pain either. I burp every now and then and it helps for a second but that's it. Does it hurt you guys when you get up to walk? For me, my stomach feels heavy and sore and then my biggest incision that my stomach came out of feels pulled at. It's bearable, but I stand for 5-10 minutes and need to sit back down again. I'm assuming that maybe I'm just still wore out from a major surgery but idk Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Agnonizing stomach/back pain. Went to ER

Hi. I am new to the lapband, day 10 only. But I was experiencing such severe gas pain I thought I was going to die. I actually called the surgeon about returning to the hospital to have the band removed. But I stuck it out. Then I remembered that I was Lactose Intolerant. ALL of the meal replacements have "creamer" as the second ingredient. This was what was causing my severe discomfort. Now I take my lactose enzymes with every meal replacement and have had no major gas pains at all. You may not have known that you were lactose intolerant before but the introduction of the cream heavy supplements may be causing your issues. Try Laictaid or any generic lactose enzyme. They can be bought over the counter. Good luck!
