  1. In the beginning, I set a goal of 120lbs because this would put me smack dab in the middle of a "normal" weight range for my height. By the time I got down to 127lbs, I decided that was enough as I felt I was looking too thin. Now fast forward 2 years after reaching modified goal of 127, and I now weigh 112 as of this morning. The funny thing is that I actually don't think I look as thin/gaunt now as i did at 127 lbs two years ago. Soooo...I think that weight loss and/or maintenance goals in terms of total actual weight fluctuates over time because the distribution and composition of those pounds may look different at different times. I think. These days so long as my clothes don't start feeling tight I'm good, lol.
  2. You will still drop more weight on your pre op diet too. If they use surgery weight to calculate it will make that number smaller.

    Pineapple weight loss drink

Was it Smart Pressed Juice Pineapple Chia? I've had that one because of the good prebiotics and fiber. I wouldn't say it's for weight loss necessarily, even though they might claim that.
  4. When I chose 180 pounds as my goal weight it sounded incredibly unrealistic to me, but that was the weight I knew I would be happy with so that's why I chose it. I was actually surprised when the surgeons office said it was a realistic goal weight and told me I should be able to get there. I'm 16 months post-op now and in a two week stall that has my weight bouncing around 186-189 so once my weight loss picks back up I'm still only less than 10 pounds from my own personal goal weight. In my own opinion, your goal weight should be where you think you'll be happy at. Where you'll be happy with your body and your weight. I chose my goal weight because that was the weight I saw myself happy at. I was 13 the last time I was in the 180's (I'm 33 now). I'm currently in the 'overweight' BMI at 29 with my goal only being 1 point lower at 28, but I'm no longer obese or morbidly obese or super morbidly obese like I used to be. I used to be 389 pounds and I've lost more than 200 of that which still blows my mind! I used to be a 32-34 in womens jeans (depending on brand and cut) and now I'm a 12. I used to be a 6xl (34-36) in womens tops and now I'm either a medium (8-10) or large (12-14) depending on the shirt. I'm far happier in my body now then I ever was. Yes, I still want to lose those extra few pounds to get to goal and it'd be amazing if I could even lose a couple pounds past that and get into the 170's, but I'm happy with my weight now for the first time in more than 20 years.
  5. "A patient's best weight is therefore whatever weight they can achieve while living the healthiest lifestyle they can truly enjoy. There comes a point when a person cannot eat less or exercise more and still like their life." (emphasis mine) - Drs. Freedhoff and Sharma, 2010 https://obesitycanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Best-Weight-Book.pdf What I've been told is that most people don't make it to that number they have in their head, and where you want to land is where you're happy with how you feel.
  6. My first surgeon visit was 12/2020 followed by my first PC supervised weight loss visit 12/2020. Endoscopy was 1/2021 along with blood work. Had psych evaluation and nutritionist appt in 3/2021. Last supervised visit was 5/20/2021. Insurance was submitted on 5/20/2021 and received the same day. My tentative surgery day is end of June/early July. So about 7-7 1/2months total. Did they say how far they are booked out? My surgeons office said about a month.

    Any March Surgeries?

This may sound insane and could even be completely unrelated but has anyone else had back pain in the morning like they need a new mattress since losing weight? It’s not terrible but I have been waking up a little stiff and thought it may be since the mattress doesn’t form to my body quite the same?
  8. This formula would have me at 154, but I think you lose more like 60% with sleeve, so that would have me at 167, which I'd be fine with. I think. My fear is that I'll never be happy with my weight.
  9. This is how my surgeon's team does it --- 1. Find your 'ideal' body weight. For males, start at 100 pounds and add 6 pounds for every inch over 5'0. For females, start at 100 pounds and add 5 pounds for every inch over 5'0. For example, I am female & 5'6.5. My ideal body weight is 132.5. 2. Take your starting weight and subtract your ideal body weight from it to find your excess weight. For example, my starting weight was 355. 355 minus 132.5 is 222.5. 222.5 is my excess weight. 3. Take 70% of your excess weight (.7 times the number). 70% of my excess weight is 155.75. Between sleeve and bypass, about 70% excess weight loss is what they told me to expect. 4. Subtract the 70%, or in my case, the 155 from the starting weight of 355. This gives me a realistic goal weight of 200.
  10. I'm wondering this too. I haven't had surgery yet, and the surgeon just said I might lose about 70lbs. Well, he said this when I was at 280, and I've lost 35 since then. So, I'm hoping I'll lose more than another 35 with surgery. While in theory I'd LOVE to be in a healthy BMI range, I don't think that's likely. I'd be thrilled to be a size Medium, but I have no idea what weight that is. Yesterday I came up with "Mini Goals," to get under a BMI of 40, to get under 200lbs, to get under a BMI of 30, and to wear normal sizes. I put 150 as a goal for this website, but I don't know that it's realistic.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

Start telling them that you are dieting and eating better now and seeing a nutritionist and exercising. Everything you are already doing so when they see you next and you’ve lost weight it won’t seem so fast.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

My weight was down about 7 years ago when I was diagnosed with Lupus and put on meds that actually made me lose a lot of weight. I went from 235lbs then to 178Lbs due to nausea and sleeping all the time for months. Family and friends noticed but knew it was from my meds. Of course I have gained it all back plus 40lbs so I know I’ll be questioned how I lost weight once again. I don’t want to tell certain family members about WLS because I am not close with them/get along with them and don’t feel I owe them an explanation. How did you manage keeping your weight loss private from those you do not want to discuss it with? I’m so nervous about it and don’t want to lie to them but feel it’s none of their business. Any suggestions?
  13. I kept changing mine. When I started, I weighed 373 lbs. When they asked me at the bariatric clinic during one of my first appts what my goal was, I blurted out 200 lbs, realizing that was probably a pipe dream and there was little chance of me getting down that low. So I was shocked when they said that was a reasonable goal (!). When I got down to 220-ish, I revised my goal to 180. The dietitian said I'd have to work hard, but it'd be attainable if I really worked at it. So then when I got there, I told her I wanted to shoot for 150 now, since for me that is within a normal BMI range She told me that that was probably unrealistic, that only about 10% of their patients make it that far, so not to get my hopes up - but I made it. Then I wanted to go lower. I just wasn't sure how low. So I had a DEXA scan at 146 lbs (the kind they do in sports labs or those commercial places, since those include fat percentage. The ones you get at doctor's offices don't include that). I told the scan technician I'd had WLS and wondered how much more weight I could lose. I was shocked when she said I was done losing weight - my body fat was 22%, which is lean for a woman. I couldn't believe it! Anyway, my weight kept dropping into the 130s (I was obviously too thin at that point - I looked pretty awful), but then, like most people, I put on 10-15 lbs during year 3 (the infamous "bounce back") But I looked much better than I did in the 130s. Mid-140s to low-150s is where I looked and felt my best (I've since put on about 10 lbs (depending on the day) thanks to COVID, which I'm trying to get off at the moment - but I won't go down in the mid-130s again...too low) anyway, suffice it to say, pick something that sounds attainable for you at the moment, knowing you can always revise it later.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

actually, weight loss surgeries WERE very risky 25 years ago! I think that's what a lot of people are remembering when you tell them you had it. Techniques have improved drastically since then -- they're much safer now than they were back then.
  15. I’m about 8 weeks post op with slow steady weight loss. Now that I’m relatively healed and I’m almost eating normal foods again it’s time to thinking ahead to goal weight. I’d like to get to a healthy goal weight. I’ve been overweight most of my adult life so I don’t really know what that is having never really experienced it. Should I be thinking of BMI? Healthy BMI for my age looks like a very low weight for my height and body frame. For those of you who have lost the weight already, how did you know that you had reached your goal? Was it how you felt? How you looked? Looking for some guidance as I navigate my weight loss journey! Thanks.

    Stall/Gaining HELP!?!

Maybe change up the types of foods you're eating for a few weeks, like eat different vegetables or different proteins, or do different exercises to the extent your able to? But I agree with @catwoman7 that depo can cause weight gain so it could be from that, or just your body reacting to the medical procedure you just had. I hope you are able to lose again soon!

    Stall/Gaining HELP!?!

did you just start the Depo? I gained a crap ton of weight on that (this was years before I had RNY, though). If you've been on it for awhile, then it's probably not that - you may just be in a stall. They typically last 1-3 weeks. You shouldn't be gaining on 1000-1200 kcal/day -- so I would guess one of the two former things.
  18. It’s only been about five months since my surgery and I’ve been having consistent stalls. I am nowhere near my goal weight. I have had some issues with birth control shots messing up my hormones but now I’ve been dancing around the same 6lbs gaining and losing them for two weeks. I’m getting my protein, drinking my water, and eating around 1000-1200 calories a day. I slowed down a bit on exercise due to another procedure I had to have but overall I’m still active. I just always feel bloated but probiotics are keeping my digestion on track. Any advice? Or has anyone else faced this?

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

I never got any notice that there was a reply lol Things are still going good! I broke the 200lb mark! It took a lot to hit it, but now I'm below that and I'm never looking back! Every once in a while, I get disappointed because it's slowed down.. but then I realize no matter what, I would have NEVER have been able to lose this much weight in 6 months... probably not even in a year. Just now my work schedule has changed so I'm going to join a gym and hope it picks up from here!

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

Unless you are the size of the people on "my 600 pound life" you probably won't be losing 20 lbs a month. You might for the first month. But yes, people will wonder how you are losing weight quickly. I posted on FB that I am having surgery, but that's just because I was excited and I'm an open book. I only had one negative reaction, and it wasn't from someone I knew well, so I don't really care. Everyone else was super supportive.
  22. So I keep seeing videos on a pineapple drink that helps you lose weight. I'm wondering if anyone has tried it? Sent from my IN2017 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Finally in Onederland!! 🎉

Officially 9 months post op and I weigh 169lbs at 5’8 1/2. HW 252lbs (January 2020) Pre-op diet starting weight (236lbs on August 14, 2020) SW: 228 (August 27, 2020) CW: 169 Goal Weight (158-163 range) My BMI is currently 24.99 so I’ve finally crossed into what “they” call the normal range! Ha I feel great. I’ve had zero complications. I have not had any alcohol since pre surgery and don’t plan on trying any until at least 1 year post op. (I’ve never been a big drinker but would enjoy the occasional margarita or glass of wine). My surgeon asks his patients to wait a year and I told him I would. I do exercise at least 5 times a week incorporating cardio and strength (arms to try and tighten the loose skin- at age 44 things down bounce back like the used to). I’ve done this since I was 6 weeks post op. I haven’t cut out any foods. I don’t tolerate spicy foods like I used too so I don’t eat a lot of those. I don’t eat a lot of pasta or rice either - I’ll try a bite or put a small servings (think tablespoon) on my plate but I’m still focusing on protein and still aim for 80 grams of protein a day and drink one premier protein shake on most days). Yes I eat carbs and will have mashed potatoes, cookie or piece of cake (everything in moderation right?) Some days I get in 64-72 ounces of water other days I’m lucky if I get 45. For all of those in the fence (I was too), just know you can do it - it’s never too late to get yourself healthy.

    Modified Duodenal Switch

Hi thanks for your post. I haven’t heard about the 3-6 week stall.,could you tell me more about that like when will that most likely occur? You lost a lot of weight 50 lbs in a short amount of time like 52 days! Wow!Congrats!! How old are you and how tall if you’re u don’t mind me asking?
  25. seababe25

    Is duodenal switch too drastic?

Hi I spoke with several surgeons prior to my duodenal surgery and two of them swayed away from the sleeve bc they said most people that do the sleeve end up eventually coming back to get the bypass surgery because the sleeve doesn’t last. If you cheat which most of us do from tune to time, stretches it out. Then you end up getting two surgeries first the sleeve then the bypass, spending double the $ and increasing your odds of going under twice. So that’s why the sleeve is just a waste of time because eventually it wears off and you end up wanting a procedure that will last. So at first I planned on doing the bypass but then I heard although not that many people promote the DS bc they don’t do it, it’s better than the sleeve because it lasts the longest and gives the most weight loss. And...it was modified so it’s not as bad with absorption as it once were. So your doctor may have also asked you questions to see the pattern of your weight gain. For me I could lose 90 but then it always came back with additional gain. At the rate I was going I was afraid I would continue to gain and I was. The surgery adds years to our lives and eliminates diabetes etc...so for me adding years to my life so I can be there for my kids mattered most. I had surgery on May 12th, 2021 two weeks ago and I’m already down 17 pounds with no excercise. I’m feeling better already. My starting weight was 289 and for years I was 145-150 but then it kept creeping higher after every diet...You can’t go from a bikini and running 4 miles a day to being that heavy without becoming super depressed. I knew if I didn’t just go for it before I had really bad health issues than I may never get the chance. My only regret is I didn’t do this earlier. I’m still recovering but I know the sacrifice was the only choice I had left. Get the switch but get it from a reputable highly rated doctor not one who just wants more $. My doctor in Orlando was very confident and told me he had done thousands of the modified DS all with success. His confidence was key. Then I prayed and out my trust into God and my surgery went great. Good luck
