    September Surgery Buddies!!

I had my surgery on 17th September 2021 so now I'm 1 week and 2 days post op. Everyday is better than the last. I'm tracking my journey on Instagram Bypass_09.2021 Sent from my SM-G955F using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I had my gallbladder removed about 10 months before getting sleeved. I gained about 38 lbs in those months and the weight gain didn’t seem to be slowing down so WLS was a must at this point. Comparing the two, I feel like I had less pain with the WLS. I actually asked my mom if she was sure they even did anything! 1. I didn’t need any painkillers after WLS, but I took them for about a week after gallbladder removal. 2. I’m typically a stomach sleeper and was also able to go back to sleeping on my stomach faster after the sleeve. 3. i only needed to sleep on a recliner for 2 days after WLS, but slept in a recliner for about 10 days after gallbladder removal. 4. Moving around was also easier for me after the sleeve, mainly because I felt like I couldn’t stand up straight after the gallbladder removal. 5. I was sleepier after the sleeve and generally had less energy the first week. 6. I had a bowel movement faster after WLS and going to the bathroom was easier in general. 7. TMI but I had sex sooner after WLS than I did after gallbladder removal. 8. Oh, my surgeon used my main gallbladder removal incision (the top one) so I only had 2 new tiny incisions for a total of 3 incisions for WLS. He felt like it was unnecessary for me to have more scars than I should so maybe that’s an individual thing that differs from surgeon to surgeon so I’d ask if that was possible. I only have the 3 WLS incisions visible and the gallbladder ones were so tiny they disappeared (you can only see them if you know where to look). So all in all I’d say my recovery from the sleeve was easier than the gallbladder removal, but of course that’s just me. I’m sure other people have it the other way around. Either way, you can do it! For me, the hardest step was actually deciding and committing to the WLS. Don’t worry, you got this!! Please feel free to message me if you feel like you have more questions or if I missed anything.
  3. I am six weeks out from lapband removal and hiatal hernia repair. I had the band removed after having it for 15 years because of my Gerd. Has anyone developed digestive issues since having the band removed such as stomach rumbling and excessive gas. Doctor says he only removed the band and didn’t do anything to my digestive track so he doesn’t understand how it could be correlated but I never had issues prior to the surgery.
  4. Didn’t your Surgon give you any instructions? Does your insurance have a dietitian you can speak with? Mine did & she called me weekly during the 1st month. You should only be having broths & stained cream soups the 1st week. Make sure you stay hydrated but DO NOT drink any carbonated beverages, no sweet beverages, no caffeine & no sugar.

Post Op care when living alone

my husband took the week off but went back to work after about the third day. Although it was nice having him here to get things for me, honestly, I would have been fine on my own. If you do decide to get a home health nurse (although you likely won't need one), I doubt you'd need them for more than a couple of days.

    Juicing

I usually try to get 1.5 servings of fruit per day and I always try to get some veggies in. Right now since I'm close to 7 weeks post-op revision to RNY, I am still keeping it in liquid form so I make a protein shake. I put a tablespoon of Genepro, baby spinach, 1/2 frozen banana, 4-6 strawberries (sometimes add plums and/or mango) with unsweetened almond milk (or lowfat kefir) and ice in a blender. Vegetables I've been either air frying zucchini or putting napa cabbage, spinach... Etc. in my broths.
  7. I’m at around 1200 cal/day and I am very active - weight training 3-4 times a week and 45-60 min of cardio on the other days (and usually 15-20 min of cardio on the weight training days too). I get in around 200 oz of water and I don’t drink anything other than water save for the rare occasions I’ll get a small diet lemonade at chic-fil-a. I’m also focusing on protein first and don’t have many carbs. I’m still losing, but just not as fast (understandably), but having mini-stalls now. Didn’t have those before. I also know that I have a lot of extra skin and I’ll reach a point that I can’t go much lower without plastic surgery (which I will be looking into soon).

Post Op care when living alone

I think you can do it alone, but there are some considerations: you need to have a friend you can phone in case something does happen, and you need to 'pre-stage' anything that won't be possible after surgery. As an example, we were being threatened with a boil-water order due to wildfire, so before surgery I went and got three cases of bottled water that would be much too heavy for me to carry with my 10 lb lift restriction after surgery. I paid a neighbor kid $10 to take my trash barrels out to the curb and back (though this week I think I can manage). That sort of thing. You'll want to have a bunch of Gas-X on hand. And have a variety of protein drinks because my tastes did change after surgery (Premiere Protein was fine pre-op but post-op tastes like non-lemon Pledge.)
  9. No issues at all with sleeve recovery. I am 12 days post-op. As Tomo said above, I had two or three days of really dismal gas (my poor fiancé!) and ate Gas-X/simethicone like it was candy. My stomach was sore but not painful, I was able to change positions immediately and could sleep on my side (though the first night I had to turn in several smaller turns). I did not have GERD before it and have only had 2-3 occurrences of it since, all of which were related to Gatorade Zero, which I've since deleted from my life. I am still on liquid diet (3 weeks liquid, 3 weeks purée/soft food) so we will see if that changes afterwards. My heavy weight was 178 kg, I started looking into VSG when I had got down to 170.5 kg, had surgery when I was 162 kg, and as of this morning (I weighed just for you!) I am 151 kg. (I am 183 cm tall.)

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Exactly what he said. You're taking in maybe 400-450 calories a day. It WILL come off. They pump you absolutely chock full of fluids and gas and it takes a while to pee and burp it all out. Honestly half the reason to take time off work is so your coworkers don't have to deal with your disgusting personal noises! Just keep doing what you're doing and only weigh in once a week. Tony B - NJ... congrats on reaching the halfway point!! (I looked at your ticker.)
  11. Oh no! Sorry you got bumped! PreOp, I have to drink 2 shakes as meal replacement and 1 protein/leafy veg dinner for 2 weeks before surgery. Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. Although my husband was with me at home, I didn't need his care at all. I think it is totally doable. I had an easy recovery though. Make sure you stay hydrated though because its easy to forget to keep drinking water and you don't want to end up dehydrated, dizzy... Etc. And be alone at home. Another thing that was somewhat bothersome for me is we can not carry anything heavy for 6 weeks or whatever your surgeon advises. If you get a heavy delivery, for example, perhaps a relative, friend, or neighbor can bring those inside. Good luck and you'll do fine.
  13. Hi all I had my bypass 23rd August they phoned me up on 29th July to say I had to have pre OP and then start my liquid diet I had it done at stoke university hospital and only had a phone call to see if ì was doing ok so finally got in touch with the Dietician this week who didn't know were I'd be having my follow ups done then got a call back to say I was under a different hospital so have to wait till Monday to phone to see what stage I should be at I've just been doing the 2nd stage any advice will do hope your all keeping well

    September Surgery Buddies!!

You are fine. You have swelling and fluids from surgery keeping your weight up. After about a week those fluids will start to dissipate and the weight will come off. Keep sipping water and broth, keep walking and give it time.

Post Op care when living alone

Based on my personal experience, you’ll be able to do most things by yourself. Make sure you clean your house thoroughly before the surgery and get all necessary groceries. I didn’t do any laundry or clean the house the first week. I also was afraid to walk our 200 pound dog the first few day, just in case he’d pull on the line very suddenly. But other than that I did everything myself. Even went home alone the day after surgery (about 4 hours public transportation to a different country). After about 5 days I felt good enough to do groceries, walk the dog and do some cleaning. But again, this was my personal experience. Best of luck to you!

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

I know how frustrating a stall is. Wishing you a big whoosh soon. Have you tried pushing fluids to twice your normal intake?
  17. I did not have heartburn prior to surgery and I still don’t. I didn’t have much pain with recovery at all and I can eat anything I ate before surgery at this point (I am 6 months out). I have lost 55 pounds. I am about 20 from goal (17 from normal BMI) and I have stalled for a month. I am hoping I haven’t put myself into maintenance cause I can see myself easily cutting my calories further but I would still consider the surgery a success if the loss stopped there as long as I can maintain it. I am currently in a size medium/ large and I haven’t been able to maintain this size in years. I am hopeful I am just stalled and the loss will pick up but like I said. I couldn’t do this on my own. I am so glad I did the surgery.
  18. we get rebates from our health insurance if we do something like approved three activities a year. One choice was having a handful of telehealth appts with a dietitian (note this was not the dietitian I usually see annually at my bariatric clinic - this was just a regular dietitian who works for the insurance company). She suggested I cut 1000 calories a day from my diet to lose the weight I wanted to. I maintain my current weight on about 1700 calories a day. So cut 1000 calories from that? Is she f***ing kidding? So I cut 200-ish calories, knowing it'll take months to lose some microscopic amount of weight. But that's how it goes when you're at or close to a normal BMI. You're pretty much equilibrium as far as calories in/calories out, so there's not much to cut - and that weight loss is going to be S-L-O-W! (note that 700 kcal/day is fine during the first months post-op -- but not when you're as far out as I am..)
  19. Oh yes I remember those ladies when I did WW back in the day - and I would roll my eyes (mentally) at them. But yes - it’s so much harder to lose weight when you don’t have as much to lose - and it’s much more frustrating to have stalls or only see the scale move .2 or .4.

    Fried foods

it depends on the person. I can't tolerate much fat/grease, even at over six years out. I went to an event three years ago catered by Cracker Barrel. Everything was swimming in grease, so I got the green beans and one chicken breast - and I removed the breading on it before eating it. I was still in the bathroom afterwards vomiting after that meal - evidently the grease from the breading had soaked into the meat. honestly, though, fatty meals don't have much appeal for me anymore. I was at Panera Bread about a week ago and noticed they have some new sandwich - macaroni & cheese between two pieces of bread. I was horrified...I can't imagine eating something like that. eating on the road hasn't been too, too challenging. If I'm stuck with only chain restaurants as choices, I'll get something like an Egg McMuffin at McDonald's (which you can now get all day), turkey chili or a salad at Panera Bread, or a grilled chicken sandwich somewhere. I also take things like protein bars with me when I'm on the road in case I'm "stuck" with no choices. Or you can always stop by a convenience store -they usually have things like cheesesticks, beef jerky, and/or yogurt... P.S. as far as toleration - before surgery, my husband and I used to frequent Friday night fish fries - these normally feature a couple of pieces of deep-fried fish, tartar sauce, French fries, a roll, and cole slaw made with mayo. I couldn't eat that now. I could eat maybe half a fried fish filet. Or maybe a baked fish filet with the mayo-laden cole slaw (or a baked fish filet with some of the fries). But all of that fried/fatty stuff at once, no - my stomach couldn't handle that.

    Plateau??? Help....

I'm in the same boat as you right now (and just posted about it in my own thread that I started and use for my own updates). I am about 4 months out. Watching my protein and calories too and yet the last time I had a loss was Aug 28th!!! Since then my weight has even gone up from 251.6 to fluctuating between 256 and 258!! Not sure why. Now I have had my period the last week and I also had my Metformin dose cut down in half so who knows what the heck is going on! If one or both things may be contributing.......or not. Frustrating nonetheless especially when you know you're doing all the right things.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: So, I think in two days it will be 1 month since I had any loss. Not sure why or what's going on as nothing is new as far as my eating goes. I've also still been keeping an eye on my protein intake and it's been fine. The only thing I have been wondering about is the Metformin. Last month some time I ran out and was without it for like a week. Well I noticed that in that time I had no loss. Didn't think much of it as it was just a week and that happens. But then my doc went and lowered my dose during my last doc visit and again, no loss since. That was several weeks ago. I am wondering if this is just a typical stall for whatever reason or is this change/loss in medication really working against me and the reason for it? I just can't figure out why the stall for this long. And it's not just a stall but my lowest weight was 251.6 on Aug 28th. I am now fluctuating between 256 and 258 again. It's driving me nuts!!!! The only other thing is that I got my period last Friday and it's just now going away so that may be contributing somehow. But it's never stalled me this long and like this any other month. Just strange. I hope it picks up again soon cause I have way too much to lose still. This can't be it. Sigh

    Marathon fueling post gastric bypass

I do dump. I started at over 700, when I got down to 310 (my goal was 210), I started a program similar to Couch to 5K. I accomplished that and just kept going. Eventually I thought a marathon would be an interesting goal and I targeted the Valley of Fire marathon (outside Las Vegas). I ran 5 marathons in a year starting about 3 years post-op, during which I was running 70 to 90+ miles a week. I usually ran in the mornings before work, though there were periods where I did "2 a days". Right when I woke up I mixed up an ice-tea / Gatorade mix that wasn't terrible and drank it down. It woke me up and got me moving but I don't think it made much of a difference during my runs. During the runs I just did water. After runs I also did a regular yogurt for recovery. I tried the little squeeze packs and found they were ok on normal days (10-13 miles), but they would cause me to dump on longer runs, so abandoned them and anything else. Again, I didn't perceive any difference with the squeeze thing. My normal plan was 3 meals per day of 3oz protein, 1oz veggies. Because of the running I hit and shot way past a normal BMI. Eventually I was up to 5 meals per day plus a protein drink. The protein drink was instead of a 6th meal as I already felt I was eating all day. It slowed my weight loss. I hated (HATED!) eating so much, what a turn. Good luck, Tek

    Plateau??? Help....

Just keep doing what you’re doing. Sounds like you’re doing fine. Maybe only weigh once a month or every two weeks, just so you won’t get disappointed every time. If you do want to add some exercise on your days off, I would suggest something like swimming. But mostly I would suggest weight training. By adding more muscle, you’ll burn more calories and it’s just better for your overall health. Maybe start with your upper body?
  25. Hello, I am almost 5 months out from surgery. I have been steadily losing every week. Up until about 3 weeks ago. I have only lost 2 lbs in the last 3 weeks. I know everyone says plateaus are common, but finding myself getting disappointed. I am following my plan, eating enough protein, watching calories. Maybe not enough water? trying though... Any words of encouragement or personal knowledge. ( I am on my feet all day at work and in need of a knee replacement, so lots of exercise is hard)
