Lying about not getting surgery is awful

actually, weight loss surgeries WERE very risky 25 years ago! I think that's what a lot of people are remembering when you tell them you had it. Techniques have improved drastically since then -- they're much safer now than they were back then.
  2. I’m about 8 weeks post op with slow steady weight loss. Now that I’m relatively healed and I’m almost eating normal foods again it’s time to thinking ahead to goal weight. I’d like to get to a healthy goal weight. I’ve been overweight most of my adult life so I don’t really know what that is having never really experienced it. Should I be thinking of BMI? Healthy BMI for my age looks like a very low weight for my height and body frame. For those of you who have lost the weight already, how did you know that you had reached your goal? Was it how you felt? How you looked? Looking for some guidance as I navigate my weight loss journey! Thanks.

    Stall/Gaining HELP!?!

Maybe change up the types of foods you're eating for a few weeks, like eat different vegetables or different proteins, or do different exercises to the extent your able to? But I agree with @catwoman7 that depo can cause weight gain so it could be from that, or just your body reacting to the medical procedure you just had. I hope you are able to lose again soon!

    Stall/Gaining HELP!?!

did you just start the Depo? I gained a crap ton of weight on that (this was years before I had RNY, though). If you've been on it for awhile, then it's probably not that - you may just be in a stall. They typically last 1-3 weeks. You shouldn't be gaining on 1000-1200 kcal/day -- so I would guess one of the two former things.
  5. It’s only been about five months since my surgery and I’ve been having consistent stalls. I am nowhere near my goal weight. I have had some issues with birth control shots messing up my hormones but now I’ve been dancing around the same 6lbs gaining and losing them for two weeks. I’m getting my protein, drinking my water, and eating around 1000-1200 calories a day. I slowed down a bit on exercise due to another procedure I had to have but overall I’m still active. I just always feel bloated but probiotics are keeping my digestion on track. Any advice? Or has anyone else faced this?

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

I never got any notice that there was a reply lol Things are still going good! I broke the 200lb mark! It took a lot to hit it, but now I'm below that and I'm never looking back! Every once in a while, I get disappointed because it's slowed down.. but then I realize no matter what, I would have NEVER have been able to lose this much weight in 6 months... probably not even in a year. Just now my work schedule has changed so I'm going to join a gym and hope it picks up from here!

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

Unless you are the size of the people on "my 600 pound life" you probably won't be losing 20 lbs a month. You might for the first month. But yes, people will wonder how you are losing weight quickly. I posted on FB that I am having surgery, but that's just because I was excited and I'm an open book. I only had one negative reaction, and it wasn't from someone I knew well, so I don't really care. Everyone else was super supportive.
  9. So I keep seeing videos on a pineapple drink that helps you lose weight. I'm wondering if anyone has tried it? Sent from my IN2017 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Finally in Onederland!! 🎉

Officially 9 months post op and I weigh 169lbs at 5’8 1/2. HW 252lbs (January 2020) Pre-op diet starting weight (236lbs on August 14, 2020) SW: 228 (August 27, 2020) CW: 169 Goal Weight (158-163 range) My BMI is currently 24.99 so I’ve finally crossed into what “they” call the normal range! Ha I feel great. I’ve had zero complications. I have not had any alcohol since pre surgery and don’t plan on trying any until at least 1 year post op. (I’ve never been a big drinker but would enjoy the occasional margarita or glass of wine). My surgeon asks his patients to wait a year and I told him I would. I do exercise at least 5 times a week incorporating cardio and strength (arms to try and tighten the loose skin- at age 44 things down bounce back like the used to). I’ve done this since I was 6 weeks post op. I haven’t cut out any foods. I don’t tolerate spicy foods like I used too so I don’t eat a lot of those. I don’t eat a lot of pasta or rice either - I’ll try a bite or put a small servings (think tablespoon) on my plate but I’m still focusing on protein and still aim for 80 grams of protein a day and drink one premier protein shake on most days). Yes I eat carbs and will have mashed potatoes, cookie or piece of cake (everything in moderation right?) Some days I get in 64-72 ounces of water other days I’m lucky if I get 45. For all of those in the fence (I was too), just know you can do it - it’s never too late to get yourself healthy.

    Modified Duodenal Switch

Hi thanks for your post. I haven’t heard about the 3-6 week stall.,could you tell me more about that like when will that most likely occur? You lost a lot of weight 50 lbs in a short amount of time like 52 days! Wow!Congrats!! How old are you and how tall if you’re u don’t mind me asking?

    Is duodenal switch too drastic?

Hi I spoke with several surgeons prior to my duodenal surgery and two of them swayed away from the sleeve bc they said most people that do the sleeve end up eventually coming back to get the bypass surgery because the sleeve doesn’t last. If you cheat which most of us do from tune to time, stretches it out. Then you end up getting two surgeries first the sleeve then the bypass, spending double the $ and increasing your odds of going under twice. So that’s why the sleeve is just a waste of time because eventually it wears off and you end up wanting a procedure that will last. So at first I planned on doing the bypass but then I heard although not that many people promote the DS bc they don’t do it, it’s better than the sleeve because it lasts the longest and gives the most weight loss. And...it was modified so it’s not as bad with absorption as it once were. So your doctor may have also asked you questions to see the pattern of your weight gain. For me I could lose 90 but then it always came back with additional gain. At the rate I was going I was afraid I would continue to gain and I was. The surgery adds years to our lives and eliminates diabetes etc...so for me adding years to my life so I can be there for my kids mattered most. I had surgery on May 12th, 2021 two weeks ago and I’m already down 17 pounds with no excercise. I’m feeling better already. My starting weight was 289 and for years I was 145-150 but then it kept creeping higher after every diet...You can’t go from a bikini and running 4 miles a day to being that heavy without becoming super depressed. I knew if I didn’t just go for it before I had really bad health issues than I may never get the chance. My only regret is I didn’t do this earlier. I’m still recovering but I know the sacrifice was the only choice I had left. Get the switch but get it from a reputable highly rated doctor not one who just wants more $. My doctor in Orlando was very confident and told me he had done thousands of the modified DS all with success. His confidence was key. Then I prayed and out my trust into God and my surgery went great. Good luck

    Feet shrunk!

My feet have always been wide, even when I was a normal sized kid. Before I got really fat I wore an 8.5 wide, but often had to buy 9 or even 10 if I couldn't find wide width. My foot wasn't longer, but the bigger shoe accommodated for the width. At my highest weight I wore a 10W and sometimes and 11. I'm still losing weight, but I'm back down to and 8.5 or 9 now that I've lost 150. My already wide feet got wider when I was bigger and now they're just their normal wide width. No more boobs

I'm 49, soon to be 50. When I was 31 I had a breast reduction because I was HUGE. I was a DD after the reduction, but then when I had my son at 39, they grew back, and now I wear a 40H. I was a 48H prior to wls. I never have lost much weight in my breasts now or in the past. Because of the reduction, which included a lift, my nipples are where they should be, but since I've lost weight, my boobs do feel and look flabbier. Also, most of the tissue is at the side if that makes any sense and I have a lot under my arms. Breast surgery will be my last priority, because my stomach and legs bother me more, but I would consider it if they look too bad. A good bra helps! 15. Hello...I use saw your note on here, its old but thought, what the heck going to write anyhow. Your story is so much the same as mine. I started off with the Lapland, quite some time ago, lost some, not a huge amt. It was such a hard live with, couldn't seem to get the right fill, I spent alot of time throwing up.....had that taken out,got the sleeve, lost a little not a huge about, think I got down to maybe 223, then gained wt. Back..so tried to be real good for awhile My dr. Says the only thing now is the Loop Duodenal Switch...I did all the nutrition appt.s, the trainer, the psyche evaluation, which I ended up paying out of pocket, then I've been waiting and waiting and noone called, then they called the other day and say its been so long (their fault not mine, they had everything ) i wasn't happy but went, so I'm lingering at 260 myself. Now according to her they are suppose to submit it to my insurance and then will set up appt. to make a date. They better I called iurance an it us covered, and he said it takes about 14 days, maybe quicker.if not I will be bugging both of them. I bet by now you have everything done. If you don't mind would love o hear from me either by Facebook messaging me DonnaRobbinsSmith. Or by email Mammysm@aol.com. thx for listening. Donna
  16. Oh no! I’m sorry you’re going through this, too! Did your dr mention anything about the weight affecting your approval? Crossing my fingers and toes for you! Keep us updated!!!
  17. I was also self pay, and with a BMI of 69.9, severely obese. I had originally wanted sleeve and the first surgeon I saw suggested bypass because I had GERD and was so overweight. He got let go because of COVID when the hospital cut staff so I went to a different surgeon at another Healthcare system. That doctor recommended either bypass or Loop Duodenal switch, which is basically a sleeved stomach along with and intestinal bypass. Like the sleeve, it can cause GERD, but I chose it because he said it was the most powerful operation and the one I'd likely lose the most weight with.. Since I was paying out of pocket and could only do it once, I chose Loop DS. It has been 10 months and I have had no GERD symptoms so far. I'm currently weaning off my Protonix, so we will see how it goes, but so far so good. [emoji1696] Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

Approval with a BMI of 32?

Awesome. I definitely have joint & chronic pain. A lot of my depression is based around my weight too. Thanks for your input!

Losing too much weight prior to surgery?

I believe that your starting weight is what qualifies you, not the weight at the day of surgery.
  20. Thanks, everyone, for the thoughtful advice! 😊 It seems difficult to get a consensus amongst my doctors (and myself). It seems like they feel either would be appropriate, and that switching to bypass would be a toss-up between a somewhat increased chance of resolving diabetes and losing a little more weight versus an increased risk of long-term complications and vitamin deficiencies (which I've struggled with in the past). I don't think any of my doctors feel there's a really clear answer, and that's what's making this decision really difficult. 😳
  21. Hello, I was wondering if anyone in TX has been approved for the gastric sleeve with a BMI of 32? Since getting injured and being on depression & anxiety medication, I’ve gained 50 lbs in a year. I’ve always have difficulty losing weight, and I’m growing more concerned with the large weight gain + my families medical history of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, etc. I don’t have an medical diagnosis other then endometriosis, pcos, & chronic depression so I can’t imagine insurance is going to cover me - which is okay I guess. I’m just looking for a way to get help because I feel like my health is spiraling.
  22. I am in the same boat. When I go on the liquid diet in a week (pre-surgery), I will definitely drop more than what I am able to be within the range I need to be, which is a BMI of 40. I haven't had much craving for food funerals, but I also haven't dieted as much as I have in the past (fear of gaining, which is not possible with my insurance). I just increased protein and decreased the portions, I wasn't as hungry due to protein...I am struggling to get enough in.....Wondering what my doctor will say about this since I have an appointment pre-surgery coming up. 🧐

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: No new changes, really. Stomach feeling better and better each day. Still sleeping on my back. Had my one week checkup today which just amounted to the doc (one of his associates as my surgeon was not available this week) checking my stomach and asking if I was doing ok with fluids and my meds. He said the first visit they just concentrate on recovery but during my next visits they will start concentrating on weight loss and hitting goals. He said the tugging and burning I feel inside when I do try and lay on my side or move certain ways is normal and that it will be that way for a while. Said wearing a binder MAY help it feel better enough to allow me to sleep on my sides so I may try looking for one. But he said no turning or anything I do can hurt my insides so that at least was reassuring. I also forgot to mention in the beginning of this post that my surgeon took pics while he was doing the surgery and gave them to me. I think there are like 6 or 8 views of my stomach before and after, my gallbladder, liver, a hernia he found, etc. LOL He said my gallbladder looked healthy and he did see a small hernia around my belly button but did not think it was gonna be an issue so he didn't touch it. Hopefully that won't become an issue later cause I think I'll be mad he didn't fix it while he had the chance.
  24. I think we're talking about a couple different things here: Insurance approval, and medical team approval. Based upon my experience, I'm surprised that some people are able to go from 1st consultation to surgery in under 2 months. I guess certain medical organizations are more cautious and/or want to lay the groundwork for success. I was told up front that it would be at least 6 months before surgery would be scheduled, with regular consultations with dieticians, a full psych eval, and the requirement to lose X pounds prior to approval without any major re-gain, or I could be expelled from the program. My initial consult was in July of 2019. In January of 2020 I was medically approved (insurance approval only took a few weeks and the medical team handled the entire process; I never had one interaction with my insurance) and surgery scheduled for April of 2020. Covid unfortunately interrupted everything and my surgery was canceled as all elective surgery was put on hiatus. Trying to keep from gaining weight while being locked down, dealing with the stress of a societal implosion and unrest and the uncertainty of damned near everything, when being predisposed to stress eating was... uhh... "interesting". Then in June of 2020 things were put back on track for a mid-July surgery date.

What is your 1st major milestone?

I guess I wouldn't make a very good project manager (I've always known this!). I just plod away, one foot in front of the other, head down, being a worker bee. I'm trying to think of Mini Goals. Here's what I can come up with: 1) BMI under 40 (225lb) 2) Onederland 3) Fitting in "straight" sizes 4) Under my lowest adult weight of 179 5) BMI under 30 (169lb) 6) BMI in the healthy range 141lbs (stretch goal)
