May 2006 Band Crew ~ July Chat

I have a NSV (well I guess its scale related, but...) I recalculated my BMI this morning after my weigh-in and am now down to Obese instead of extremely Obese. BMI of 39.7. That means I probably would not qualify for surgury now since my comorbidities have gone away and I am under 40 BMI! lol

Too soon for a NSV but get this

Hey, girls...it is never TOO early for NSV's!!!! Actually, just having the surgery is a NSV. Keep enjoying your SV's and NSV's....
  4. I'm 13 days post op and today I mowed the entire yard, then got on the tractor and helped my husband pull up trees and drag them off and then got on the 4 wheeler and went riding for hours. I'm so proud of myself. I've lost over 20 pounds in the last 3 weeks and lots of inches and it feels so good to do something besides sit in the recliner or lay on the couch. I can't wait to loose more weight. Didn't want to sound bragging but after 3rd degree burns, neck surgery, foot surgery and being fat for 5 years and just existing and that's it I am finally among the living. Hope this continues and I don't backslide. Thank you all for your encouragement it has been so helpful and for all of the wonderful birthday wishes yesterday. Lord, I'm 42, I'm getting old quick. LOL My husband bought me a 1 carat solitare diamond ring for my birthday, he really seems so proud I had this done. He was really against it at first but he see's I'm really trying and he's been so supportive since we got back from Mexico. Love you all, I know that the hard times are ahead, but we have to enjoy the good times while the very little times they exist.

Holli- GIRL!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOU LATELY!!!! That is one of the weirdest things I have ever heard. Why did they take so much out....were you still in excruciating pain and unable to swallow saliva or something when you went in..... Was this the recommendation of Dr H to take out 5 cc, or the decision of the ER doc?? I'm so sorry!!! It's VERY late...longest day yet. Very fun filled, and productive....yet exhausting. Went to the NASA space center and the kids had a blast...I'll have to send you all some pictures when I get home... NSV today!! I actually bought an outfit at Old Navy!! Never done that before...and can I just say that regular sized people get much better deals on clothing:biggrin1: Quick report on food for the day: B: Nothing L: (late breakfast..shared a monstrous Texas sized breakfast platter with my hubby). Coffee, 1 over easy egg ....(I've found those go down better than scrambled now), 5 bites of hubby's country fried steak...YUMMY! S: Couple bites of Dippin' Dots D: Split entree with hubby again....about 6 bites of spin/art dip and chips, 2 bites of mashed potatoes, 4 oz (if that) of grilled steak. Hubby, kids, and I split a bananas foster dessert 4 ways (bananas have potassium and are good for you right?? ) Not too bad today, but not great either...No gym work out, but OMG soo much walking my feet hurt bad tonight!! Thanks Diane for the kind words! You are right....every day is a new start, and I just can't believe how much fun I am having compared to what it would have been like for me to come down here last year. I would have been miserable in the heat, aching, exhausted constantly with no energy to do anything. I"m having a blast with family/kids, and for that I need to be so incredibly thankful!!! Talk to you guys tomorrow. Nighty Night:notagree

    Non - Scale Goals:

Hey, just thought I'd let you know that one of the NSV's I had (non-scale victories) was to sit in an airline seat AND be able to buckle the seat belt! I've done that twice now. Most of the NSV's I have now are things I never even dreamed of...hiking, climbing lots of stairs, and stuff like that. I can't even tell you what a difference the lapband has made in just a year! Can't wait to hear all about your NSV's!

I got the "after" one already...it just looks amazing next to the yucky one. Thanks! BTW, what the hell IS that awful Yoda looking thing?! That's just awful!!! LOL

I so need another fill... I think... Totally weird, I can not eat a thing in the am, but this evening I ate 3 small pieces of thin crust pizza. Crazy... As for liquids: 40 ounces water, 32 ounces lemonade, 12 ounces coffee... Congrats to all with the NSV, Water Victories, and other accomplishments!

BeacheeGirl ---that's comforting to know that I'm not the only one that thinks the port is moving around. And it makes perfect sense with the healing process. I know right after my surgery it felt like a huge knot under my port incision. When I got my fill, I read my post-op report and it said that I had a low profile port and from what I gathered it was placed pretty deep. I'm going to try not to fret about it because there is nothing I can do if it flips. Pinkylee --My doc too said keep between 4 to 6 ounces for meals. I think that I am doing pretty good. Today I am very hungry, got a bit weak also. But, I've also been very active today. I did a 3 mile walk this morning the walked through Sam's club, then walked through the mall, then ran a bunch more errands. I actually had to get a snack because I felt so weak. This is the first time since my surgery that my blood sugar dropped low. I am not diabetic but my sugars seem to always run on the low side. I had my second NSV today :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: I had to go to Lane Bryant to get some new jeans. My one and only pair were getting too big (size 22). I tried on an 18 and they fit very good!!! These should last me a couple of months until they get too big. I hate to buy too many clothes right now.....I have plenty of shopping to do in my own closet. Have a great Saturday everyone!! Melissa Lea:hippie:
  11. We had a formal work function for Doug last night, Mum made the dress for me, but no faffing around making patterns bigger, just a stock standard McCalls pattern, no dramas. No panicking about fat bits hanging out, no stress. I felt great. I actually would have liked to go a little sexier but it was a work thing and Doug's the CFO so I had to act all middle aged and responsible.

Do you set short term goals?

I have several NSV type goals...but as far as the actual weight goes (# wise)...they way I look at it is "ooooh, I can't wait to get into the 230s."....then the "220s" then the "2teens" etc etc (I've been doing this since I was in the "270s" and it works for me. I don't even care how long it takes me to get to the next set of "10s"....as long as I get there. So, there really isn't even a deadline for these "minis". It seems less oppressive and daunting to me that way...I can't look at my end goal or it's disturbing!!! LOL

    I'm Half Way Home!!!!

Margo, that is just FABULOUS! Way to go! Share some more NSV's if you feel like it. It's all downhill from here. Woohoo!
  15. I am so excited today....I am half way to my goal today!!!!! I can't believe it. I feel so wonderful....life is so exciting now. I also had some great NSV's this past week too...double yeah!!! I wore a sleeveless top. I fit in those attached chairs/desk at the high school. I purchased two tops without trying them on in a size which I thought I was not in yet, but they fit PERFECTLY. I LOVE MY BAND:clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: To everyone embarking on this journey.....good luck, speedy recovery and get ready for a wonderful new beginning

    Positive Life Changes since Banding?

I just bumped my complete list of NSV's. I highly recommend that everyone track theirs. http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=8943&highlight=Crystal%27s I know that so many people have wonderful weight loss, but that is not in the cards for me, at least not yet. The band saved my life in a couple of ways, it saved my husband's life, and it saved my mariage. One of the things about keeping track of your NSVs is that it adds dimention, texture and color to your life's journey. Someone could say "I lost 38 pounds" which is wonderful, but it doesn't quite have the same impact as saying what that weight loss translates into, whether it is being able to fit into a booth at a restaurant, the seats at the Baseball Stadium, or being able to walk around the Fair or Ammusement Park all day. Or for an hour, or whatever your victory is. Be kind!

    Crystal's complete list of NSVs

I haven't had an NSV for a while. Cushing's is kicking my butt, what with all the Highs, Lows and testing... But I thought I would bump this because I think that even though I haven't lose any weight (I've gained back the 15 I lost when I crashed hard in June, plus some extra.) I'm not stressed about gaining weight. I have no control, and I'm ok with havng no control.

    Need Help

Athena. I was "only" 242 at my high weight, which felt like hundreds of pounds more than that. I did manage to lose about 20 pounds on my own by going to Curves and exercising regularly. But my eating/portion control was a huge problem. I knew if I could just quit eating so dadgum much, I'd be okay. I found out about lap bands and found this site and knew it was for me. My hubby agreed that is the band worked properly for me, I'd surely lose. So far, so good. I weighed 182 this morning and have been really struggling to lose more weight. My band is not very tight, so I'm trying to really make it work without another fill. It's hard. I can eat 1800 calories a day if I'm not careful with what I choose. And, truthfully, I was eating 1800 calories a day at surgery weight and maintaining. These past weeks I have cut back to 1200-1550 calories a day and I'm hoping it will show up on the scale. It's work. No doubt about it. But it's work I am now able to do. My little band helps me so much. At my fill level, I have to eat slowly and carefully, chew really well, other than that I could get away with murder on my food choices and even with the amounts. The biggest difference for me is that I can no longer shovel and shovel massive quantities before my head catches up with me. I have what's called an NSV thread. It's a thread I started so I can track my Non-Scale Victories. You can zip through that and get a glimpse of my journey. Others here have NSV threads, too. Life IS better after losing weight! Please make sure you know what you are getting into before you do this. I have had good success with my band, and plan on having even more! I have no regrets. Here's the link to my NSV thread. Hope it helps. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=10252

Wedding Band ~ How loose is yours?

I am looking forward to wearing my original wedding band. After I had been married for about 17 years, I was too fat to wear them. Also, the engagement had been retipped twice. The diamond was in danger of falling out, so I picked out a new ring and had the stone re-mounted. For Christmas, DH gave me an anniversary band that went well with the new "engagement" ring. They are lovely, but every once in awhile, I wish I could wear the original band. So, that will be an NSV for me. Probably another 30 lbs. Donna - about your engagement ring and the additional stones. You might consider talking to the owner of a small jewelry store. (Not one of the big name ones.) They don't always have a lot of work to do because they are small, sometimes they will design a ring to accomodate your stones. I was chatting with the owner a few yeaers ago, and the one he was designing was going to cost the woman about $400.

    June 2006 Band Crew

christa - there is no precise norm for fills and for post-op diets. Every Dr. does it a little different from the other. My surgeon does the large VG band, with no fill during surgery, which means that you are wide open with no restriction after surgery. I have no problem with pre-banding meal sizes right now. I get my first fill in two days. Post surgery he has us on two weeks liquids, one week mushies/pureed food, one week soft food, then slowly adding solid foods with a list of solid foods that are easily tolerated to try first, then a list of foods that are sometimes found difficult by some bandsters next, and a list of foods that are often found difficult by banders to be tried only after you've added the other solid foods without any difficulty. He has lots of suggested meal plans and guidelines, recipes, etc, to help you out for each stage of the post op diet. He also gives us the official booklet from Imamed who makes the bands with their guidelines and info as an added resource, though he covers the same information in his booklets and handouts, plus a lot more detail. A lot of the time with some Dr.'s is what the Dr. chooses to do will vary from patient to patient, once they get inside they can see how your stomach is, some people have very little fat attached to the stomach, and a smaller stomach, and the Dr. feels a smaller band, and/or a band with a fill is a better starting option. Or to place a large stomach and/or a stomach that is thicker around because of attached fat deposits with a larger band. Some Dr.'s vary which band they use based on the stomach width around. Other Dr.'s have switched to only using the large VG (vanguard) band, and then just adjusting it with the fill level - since it's a 10cc band with an 11cc capacity. Some Dr.'s will add a fill to the VG band right away during surgery for a small width stomach, others like my Dr., always just put the large empty band in, and then sneak up on restriction after healing with regular fills. Is there one way that's 'better' than others? Who knows! I just think it's good to go with a Dr. who has an approach that you feel comfortable with, and to trust in their experience with their methods. I'm doing my best to eat like I have restriction now, but I've definitely had a few very large volume meals - healthy, low fat, low cal - but huge vegetable salads with cottage cheese, followed by fruit, so I know I have the same large stomach capacity from having no restriction, everything passes right by my large wide open band, it's like I haven't had surgery at all. So until I get filled to restriction I'm choosing to count calories and fat/carbs/protein/fiber intake to try to keep me on track! My NSV's -The motor home we're currently travelling/living in has a tiny little bathroom like a closet, with a really small entry door, I used to have to -squeeze- in through the door, now I just brush the sides! -I had to buy a new swimsuit because the one I had was getting a little loose! I'm usually on the cusp between a 2x and a 3x, but the 2x fit great. In fact, I seemed to be on the cusp between a 2x and a 1x! but the 1x was a little too tight still and I wanted to feel comfy right away in it, so I went with the 2x. -Some of my skirt waists seem to be hanging a little low on my hips! -My two favorite dresses are ones I had custom made, 1950's style, they have a tie around the back that sinches the waist in a bit and makes a wide bow in the back.. the bows seem to be getting a little bigger as I have more left over tie ribbon! So we got toilet papered by the July crew! Should we retaliate?! I think we should go egg them! XO Leila
