    Weight loss stall

Check this link out on stalls. It covers stalls and weight loss issues. https://www.sagebariatric.com/what-you-can-do-about-weight-loss-stalls/?fbclid=IwAR32VsKiWHImteYKwt638j0aP-c6FUxhaxAp42-6HyGVSPkUgBjzyVlm2y0
  2. I am over 10 years post gastric sleeve. I waited for my *** to do the sleeve vs an RNY because of medication I need to take orally and was not recommended to have the RNY. Weight loss surgery was the BEST THING I have ever done for myself. I was in my mid 50s. 5'3 and 320 pounds when I started. I lost a few pounds before I went in to start !!! I am now 65 years old. I lost 145 pounds. Yes, I am still overweight - but I lost 145 pounds. I work full time, have the same career for 40 years. I am active, I garden and keep chickens for fresh eggs, grow organic fruit and veggies. I rake and hoe and walk and am more active NOW at 65 then I was at 40. NOT one regret at all. Also, I eat beef on occasion; when I want to. And I eat chocolate every darn day. Mind you - not a lot. I have learned the value of a really good piece of chocolate. No hershey bars here. But a lovely piece of dove chocolate ? YUM. I re-learned how to feed my body. Protein and fresh veggies and fresh fruits. Healthy fats, and keep my carbs down. Instead of a "rice bowl" think of it as a chicken and veggie bowl. I might sprinkle rice on top as a garnish !!! Move your mindset to "HEALTHY". I went from a 4x plus size to wearing a 14/16 petite. I am thrilled. My doctors are thrilled. Find the RIGHT support team. Start with supportive doctors. Best Wishes.
  3. -Not worrying about the weight limit on my hammock -My bathrobe fully closing -Not having to be restricted to plus size only clothing -My leggings have become too loose -Not worrying about sitting on wicker furniture lol
  4. I revised from a band I got in 2008, it slipped in 2017, I got RNY in December 2020. With my band I had several issues, pain with eating, throwing up, not losing weight. my surgeon said she would only do RNY because it was safer due to the scaring from the band, so my choice was an easy one. I’m a female, 5’9” and I have hormonal issues that hinder me from losing weight. But, I started at 255 in December and am 207 today, so it’s still been effective, even if slower than I expected. The best part is, no pain while eating. I actually don’t feel much when eating. So, that old feeling of band “restriction” is totally out the window. You have to relearn your body’s hunger cues, but the essentials of how, what, how much to eat is quite similar to the band.
  5. I would focus more on your other health conditions. I qualified with a BMI of 36 due to apnea and high cholesterol. FEP BCBS was fairly quick to approve the surgery after it was submitted. I was not required to loose weight before the surgery but I also tried not to gain. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    June Surgeries

I am doing a 3 week liquid diet too. It starts tomorrow. I have to be under a certain weight by June 15th, so I am just starting it a little early (my surgery is scheduled for the 21st). My daughters are freaking out about the idea of a liquid diet and my husband is worried that I will be hangry all the time, which surprisingly makes me less worried and more focused because someone has got to keep it together - lol! I do plan to have my three allowed protein shakes a day, as these are the only things of substance I am allowed to have, and treat them like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Congratulations on the weight loss - that is 10 pounds you do not have to worry about after surgery! I am hoping for the same!
  7. Hi everyone, I had my lap band installed on May 21, 2012. Starting weight was 293, was 285 the day of surgery, got down to around 240, stayed there a while, then started phentermine which helped me lose more. For a single day in August of 2019 I crossed from obese to overweight and am now back up to 235. Recently, whatever I ate got stuck and had to be “ejected” after which I could resume eating. Along with this came an increase in reflux, to the point of having stomach acid in my mouth a few times. Saw the NP, she suggested unfilling the band, getting an upper GI and seeing where to go after that. I am reluctant to refill the band because I fear the reflux will return. I want to get a revision to sleeve or bypass; thinking bypass would have less chance of reflux returning. I wish I’d gotten bypass in the first place but thought the band was safer. I’d be grateful for any advice anyone cares to offer. Thanks!
  8. What have been some of your experiences with going from sleeve to bypass? Worst things? Best things? Weight loss time periods? etc. Also, I know this is a stupid time to be asking this but I made a bad assumption about the bypass. I thought since I had the sleeve already that the surgeon would just use that pouch and redirect the small intestine. After reading some of the stories on here, I am not sure what they did to my stomach part?? Anyone have any answers for that one too??
  9. I was originally scheduled for Dec 21. Then corona spiked and all surgeries were cancelled. They started reopening in February but i had to wait for a break at work. Now my date is June 21st. I was mad and disappointed but i will have plenty of recovery time now. I just try to look at the positive side. I did let myself have a moment back in December. I have been working on my own to loose some weight in the meantime.

    Sick of feeling sick

I'm going to just put this out there. Whenever I tell a doctor in clear terms that I am suffering and they don't act to alleviate my concerns, I get another opinion. It sounds like you have no quality of life. Think back to why you had the surgery and what you expected to gain. I don't think this is it. Sending my prayers your way.

    Vitamins & Bypass?

I was told the stomach will stretch the smallest bit just life but never as big as pre surgery and weight gain is not due to anatomy but due to reverting back to bad habits
  12. I have FEP Blue BCBS. I have attached a screenshot from their 2021 booklet. Although it does say three months in a medically supervised weight loss program, there is nothing regarding how much needs to be lost (if any) or if a net gain would be ok. Here’s my issue. I started this journey at 257. My first weigh in was 269. I am 260 right now but I am having a colonoscopy just a day before my next weigh in a week. With all those laxatives and extended clear Liquid diet (2 days for me) , I am probably bound to be down even more. This will look like a 12 lb gain and 12 lb or more loss in two months. Ugh. I don’t want to look all Over the place. Each month I gain and loss weight everyday it seems. It would be good if I got back to 257, but almost not because the month after I go on vacation and my last weigh in will be a few days after I get back. Can’t win! The surgical coordinator told me to try to maintain the best I could. This is not happening for me. I am obsessing so much about being denied. I am almost done with my clearances (except endoscopy) and the last two weigh ins. Do you think I’ll get denied ?
  13. I’m one week out from VSG so maybe a bit too early to weigh in (pun intended) but as my incisions heal and the surgical fluids are pretty much gone, my facial features are becoming more visible and I am thinking about my future. I’m 40 years old and very active but will be much more agile without 120+ pounds of extra weight. Snowboarding in Whistler? Yep! Riding any rollercoaster or amusement park ride I want? Yep! Staying covered up at the beach? Nope! With this surgery, I essentially traded crap food and bad eating habits for LIVING. For life! Find a supportive mental health team accustomed to working with bariatric patients, decide what’s most important to you, ask your doc a thousand questions, and pray/meditate/ponder over it. Whatever inconveniences this surgery may or may not bring are nothing compared to the health problems that usually accompany obesity. I was tired of digging my grave with a knife and fork.

    Modified Duodenal Switch

@RLeaT Wow! Your experience is very similar to mine! I had the SADI-S on 4/29/21 so I'm just now out of my first month post-op and it has only been in the past few days that I've started to feel more like myself. I think it was around week 2 ish that I started regretting my decision because of the nausea (better now), constipation (still experiencing that), couldn't get in enough fluids/protein daily (still working on that & even struggling to get in enough calories/day), and that feeling of gas/needing to burp but can't plus just various other reasons. I also can relate to not being able to tolerate the Protein Shakes I bought and also having a gross taste in my mouth that seemed to linger! But now I'm back to feeling glad I did and also realizing it takes time for my body to get used to it. I lost 17 lbs in my first 2 weeks post-op so that was encouraging but now my weight has been stalled for the past week ish. I'm just hoping getting in the Protein, fluids, & calories on a daily basis will become easier and easier and I'll start getting some energy back. So it's encouraging to read your experience and know I'm not alone and also that things have been much better for you lately. Hope all is well. Take care!

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: 12 days post op and yesterday was NOT a good day. We were invited over to friends/neighbors for a BBQ and while the rest of my family went, I declined. Just wasn't ready to be around all the food and drinking (plus I can't always get comfortable sitting on the sofa let alone a camp chair). If perhaps I was out of this stupid liquid stage and into the puree or soft foods phase I would have. At least then I could have found SOMETHING to eat and participate in. Who knows. But after everyone was over there for several hours having a good time, I had myself a good cry and pitty party and asked my husband when he was coming home. He asked if I was ok and needed something I told him no. That I was just feeling bored and left out. He came home right away. I felt bad but he didn't mind, he said, cause he had already been there like 6 hours. Anyway, it was a bad day. He was asking why I was crying and upset and I just said I didn't know. I guess it was just the feeling left out that got to me and feeling hungry and not being satisfied any longer with these stupid freakin' limited liquids!! I've had enough of it!! Just can't wait to move on to the next food phase! My second issue is sleep. Still can't sleep on my sides and sitting up/semi up has my back jacked up now. And now I keep getting that tugging/burning feeling BELOW my belly button. A place that hadn't bothered me previously and a spot, to my knowledge, they didn't even touch. And lastly, I'm already wigging out that this isn't working/gonna work for me. I am only down like 7lbs since surgery and feel like I should have lost more. I know everyone is different. And I know people say it's early but, I DO NOT feel like I am dealing with that gas issue any longer and haven't since day 4/5, roughly. I can see it in my legs that I am not bloated and feel back to normal but for this burning/tugging stomach crap. So, considering I have been doing low/no carb/no sugar since March 1st and having the surgery May 19th, I would have expected to lose more than I have so far. I guess I'm just worried I'm going through all this for nothing and I won't lose as per usual. I mean, you would think if a body only had liquids for nourishment for almost 4 feakin weeks (and only roughly 400 calories a day) that the body would most definitely be losing weight. Of course, not me. SMH I can hear Dr. Now, now...."At your weight, in a mont, you should have lost turdy pounds by now". LOL I seriously hope I'm wrong and things move soon. I don't feel like this is that stall everyone talks about because I haven't really even begun the dang losing phase yet let alone be in a stall. Anyway, rant over.
  16. No regrets at all, but believe it or not there are downsides, or more accurately unanticipated adjustments that may be needed. It's been 10.5 months since my surgery, and in no particular order: Temperature sensitivity. I always used to run hot, which made summers uncomfortable but was great in the fall and winter months. I had enough internal insulation that I frequently didn't need to wear a winter coat even down in to the 20s. Now it's the exact opposite; I always feel cold. In moderate temperatures (50s-60s) I feel chilly. By the same token, I can now go outside for exercise in 90 degree weather and I feel fine. It's just completely different parameters when it comes to temperature. Bones. Everything was padded before. Now with bones/edges, it can be a bit uncomfortable sleeping/lying on my side or stomach, as pressure/weight is now on bone rather than fat which cushioned everything. Lack of muscle. For my entire adult life I could leverage my bulk when it came to moving or picking up things; inertia vs. using muscle. Moving furniture and heavy/bulky objects is much more difficult now. I really need to work on building/rebuilding actual muscle. I can't just put my hip into something anymore... they push back! Knowing what I know now, would I change my mind? Absolutely not. The benefits still outweigh (no pun intended) the downsides, just be aware that there may be life changes you didn't anticipate.
  17. I wanted to write about this because I think no one talks about the some of the bad parts of surgery. It’s important before you make a decision in my eyes. I had gastric bypass 8 years ago and lost about 100 pounds. I was NOT ready. We paid out of pocket and I did not have to do much in the way of prep. My choice was purely because I hated my body, was ashamed of who I was, and wanted to change myself completely. My mental health was NOT in a good place. The surgery did not fix that (obviously). At my highest, I gained 70 lbs back. I am going to get the surgery again and I have lost 25 lbs on my own to prep. I would not so it again if I hadn’t done extensive mental health work for the last 5 years and already had it done once. Here is kind of why. First is obviously the mental health issue. It is more than just thinking you’re prepared, it’s a self love thing too. Working through the trauma, the shame, and societies BS that has been forced on you. Owning why you eat as well as understanding a lot of food is made to make us gain weight. The nutrition, the addiction, and building a relationship with your body. It’s hard work, but I know I deserve it now. The big thing is when I make a mistake, I can get back on track. That changes everything. I’m doing this for me this time. Honestly, I would probably not get this surgery again if I hadn’t already done so. I wish I’d gotten the band or sleeve. The gastric bypass has caused some health issues for me and a lot of pain. For a while I had abrupt sharp stomach pain that sent me to the hospital a couple times. Never found out what it was, and it stopped a few years in. Gallbladder became diseased and I had surgery for that. It was painful but a risk that often happens. One thing I wasn’t ready for was how much my body became different. I became sensitive to a lot of foods and developed some allergies which may or may not be because of the surgery. I also had constant stomach pain until about two years ago. This was largely based on my return to poor eating habits but some of it seemed to be in a change in my gut balance and developing food aversions/allergies. I cannot eat certain things (not always due to being “unhealthy”). I had some stomach issues prior so that could have contributed. One thing that may be weird that went with this constant pain, and did cause me a lot of regret as I started becoming in tune with my body, was the actual surgery and internal changes themselves. I sometimes struggled with this thought that I mutilated my body. I would think about the staples in my body and changes that were made and when paired with the pain I always felt I would feel a great deal of anxiety. Now, this has subsided greatly as I learned my food aversions and ate less unhealthy foods. However, I do have some trepidation as I go forward with the re-do that the pain was not just because of my eating but creating imbalance in my body. Overall, if you are ready I don’t think the surgery is a bad choice at all. I am not trying to scare anyone, or be negative. These are the thoughts I went through before deciding to go forward with it again. Overall, if you are ready I don’t think there is much to regret. Most of what I’m talking about is not being ready and being stuck deep in my food addiction. Furthermore, I have had a severe food addiction that I think might surpass some surgery recipients. If you are ready there will likely be few, if any, regrets. Things like not enjoying a huge meal, not eating what you used to, and changes in meals I think can be real regrets for some but not huge.

    Big belly

there probably isn't much fat there - it's probably mostly/all excess skin. I had a lot of rolls when I had a DEXA scan done at 146 lbs. I thought it was all fat - and I wanted to see how much more weight I should lose (thus, i had the scan). Turns out I only had 22% body fat, which is pretty lean for a woman. That "fat" was just skin. I hate to say it, but plastic surgery is the only want to get rid of it.

    I'm losing my hair!!

Your natural hair loss cycle accelerates due to the shock of the surgery & reduced calorie intake - excess stress on your body. I also think the oestrogen flush we have as we’re losing weight probably adds to it like the hair loss it causes in a lot of pregnant women or after childbirth. This is hair you would have usually shed over a longer period of time concentrated in a short time frame. But just like new hair grows when we shed at our usual rate, new hair is growing in while we lose at the accelerated rate. It’s just the new hair is growing at it’s usual rate so it’s going to take time to catch up. There’s nothing you can really do to stop it or slow it down. The hair you’re losing is already dead & ‘scheduled’ to fall out & be replaced. All the supplements can do is maybe make your new growth stronger. I just cut my almost waist length hair to shoulder length so the new growth wouldn’t take as long to catch up to the hair I had.

    Feeling full

You could possibly reduce your protein since you’re in maintenance & it’s very filling & up your vegetable intake. Daily requirement in the US is 0.8g protein per kilo you weigh so you could reduce your intake to about 50g. But check with your surgeon & dietician first. (My dietician said I needed a little more because of my age so I work at 1-1.2g protein per kilo of weight.) I can eat more now than I did at 6 months & more than I did at 12 months. To get my calories in to maintain (about 1200+/-) I feel like I eat all day long. I snack about 4 times a day on dairy, fruit & multi/whole grains in addition to my three meals. I also still take ages to eat: 30-40+ mins for breakfast & dinner & about an hour for lunch but it does enable me to eat a little more. Are you still leaving time between when you eat & drink? Have you tried plant based proteins? I believe they can be easier to digest & may not upset you or fill you as much. I really think you need to have a conversation with your surgeon & then your dietician because you’ve been struggling so much.

    Hashimoto's

Hashi’s is auto-immune based, so it is extremely common to have dosages lowered if you’re not having a flare up. Restricted calories and weight loss will reduce inflammation which can cause thyroid resistance. I’ve seen a few studies done where longer term restricted calories can actually improve thyroid function, so it does make sense.
  22. Hello, I had my surgery on 12/8/2020. I am 67 years old, 5"6. I was unable to walk due to a broken ankle and surgery to reconstruct it in May 2020. I also have thyroid disease and osteoarthritis in both knees. So having a gastric sleeve was my last resort. I began to gain weight at 40 and became diabetic at 45. My highest weight was 310lbs. My surgery was without complications. But I am not losing weight as I thought I would. There was no support from my surgeon after the sleeve. I was just on my own. So I decided to get counselling for my eating disorder and depression. This is a slow process. I am hoping for the best. I am thankful for this site as I know I am not alone. SW 289 GW 160 CW 257 I have been stuck here since March. I know I have eating habits that must change. But I love to snack on salty and crunchy . I do not eat sugar, rice, bread, or most carbs. Most days I only eat two meals. I begin with protein. I do drink a protein shake for breakfast. My diabetes is in remission. I am now walking without support. I go to physical Therapy for my knees and ankle twice a week and also have water therapy. That is my exercise. I just wish my weight loss would get going. Finally in Onederland!! 🎉

Sounds like your weight loss is going fantastic. I would guess your "stall" is related to getting more fit. Getting more toned adds muscle weight in the short term but helps increase your metabolism. Keep up the good work!!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Can I change my surgery?

I had the sleeve as well, and also had hiatal hernia repair. I’m 21 months post op. I’m maintaining at below my initial goal weight. I have occasional (once a month, if that) heartburn easily treated with a Tums. You’ll successful people who had either surgery. Work with your team to determine which will be best for you.
