    Hydration

I am just 2 weeks out, and I haven't had any issues yet, but maybe you're just not into water right now? Have you tried drink mix packets in your water? I find that I get sick of plain water so I make sure a lot of my fluid is decaf coffee mixed with protein shake, or water with a drink mix packet (I don't like Crystal Light but the Starburst ones are great!). I am able to get about 80oz of water or more a day if I like what I'm drinking. Also, consider the temperature. Would an insulated thermos help it be more appealing?

    Breaking a stall?

Yes, stalls are normal, and sometimes it's best to just let them take their course, but you can also try to "mix it up" a bit. Try to eat a bit more for a few days, or increase carbs, drink more water, change your exercise routine. Try taking your measurements instead of your weight for a few weeks to see if that makes you feel better. If you're always eating the same thing for breakfast, try something different. I don't know why, but sometimes changing things helps us get going. Also, track your calories for a few days to see if you're really eating what you think you are (you will have to weigh/measure all your food to do this right).
  3. First and foremost I understand that stalls happen and patience is required. I'm only 4.5 months post so I know my journey is unlikely to have stopped this early. That being said I'm at a weight I've gotten to before when I've been successful with dieting. Twice prior to surgery I was able to lose 40-50lbs and get down to right around 200lbs and then that's typically when I started to regain. So I do think this is a bit of a set point for my body. Is there anything to do in a stall beyond waiting it out? Increasing protein, decreasing carbs? Or is it best to just stay the course and let my body do it's thing? I think it's extra frustrating being so close to one-derland and not being able to get over the tipping point. 😫
  4. Hey guys! I'm new here so first I would like to say hello to everyone I had my gastric sleeve done Aug 4th. At first I didn't struggle with keeping hydrated but the last few weeks I have been struggling getting in about 40-45oz a day. I try my hardest to keep drinking water, but sometimes I will catch myself just carrying around my water bottle but forgetting to actually drink. I hardly feel thirsty which I think is my problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any advice for me?

    Zero pounds…

.Um... I doubt that the brand of protein drinks is the reason. What are you eating besides the protein drinks? If the majority of your calories are from food and not a protein drink, that's likely the issue. I use both premier protein and fairlife nutrition plan (or fairlife core power, if I'm out). I also tried muscle milk light, but they're pretty gross. They all are around the same, nutrition wise, although the source of protein is different, and premier protein has added vitamins and minerals. I tried a lot of other protein drinks - like vegan ones and powdered ones - but the tastes/textures were intolerable to me. Also... you probably shouldn't be eating 3-4 protein drinks a day unless that's what your doctor/dietician has recommended. It's more protein than you need and that can cause problems. Try one protein drink and two healthy meals. If you are working shift work, that's really hard, but try to "meal prep" to have things for a whole week or buy things that are easy to bring with you, like string cheese, deli meat, tunafish, cut up bell peppers or cucumbers, nuts, etc.
  6. I’m 52, 5’9” and my HW: 275. My pre-op weight was 242. I’m currently at 195. My surgery was February 9, 2021. I feel like I should have lost more by now and I’ve been in a stall for about 6 weeks. I’m happy being down 80 lbs but I do understand the frustration of a stall. My doctor wants me to try to get to 163 and being stuck in a stall for so long makes me wonder if this is all I’m going to lose. I would give anything to be down a hundred lbs!!! I’m not giving up, though. Everyday is a struggle to stay on track but I do. I’m being positive that eventually those last 32 lbs will be gone. It just might take me longer than most given my age, being post-menopausal, and having hypothyroidism. Everybody is different and we lose at different rates. Keep your chin up and feel proud of what you’ve accomplished so far!💕

Post Op care when living alone

I had my parents come for a week, although they stayed in a nearby hotel because I have a small apartment. They live about 5 hours away. It was great for them to come for emotional support, but honestly, that was about all that was really needed. The surgery center made clear that I was supposed to be doing all of the fixing of food etc. My mom kept saying "let me do that," but I kept reminding her I needed to do it myself. It was good to have them for the laundry (mostly getting smaller clothes out of storage and sheets and towels, but that could have waited another week) and dishes (again, mostly what they were using as I was only eating liquids like protein shakes and yogurt). I was in a lot of pain so it was nice to have them here, but it did make it harder to sleep during the day as my mom can't sit still and kept asking me what else she could do 😐Now that they have left, I have asked a fried to buy me a case of protein drinks (I had one brand I liked) and bring them into my apartment because they are too heavy to lift. If you have a complication, that would be a different issue. Oh, I didn't try stairs until about day 4, but they turned out to be a non-issue. However, sleeping in a bed was hard because it was very hard to get up from lying down due to incision pain (felt like I had done about a million sit ups). I suspect that will be harder than the stairs to your bedroom. If you have a wedge pillow and can sleep on your back, that may be helpful. Other people have suggested recliners, but I don't have one. best of luck!

    2 week post op

I'm two weeks out from sleeve and I have lots of "noise" when I eat, although I'm only eating fluids and yogurt at this point. I have gas/burping too. If I drink too big a gulp or drink too fast or eat too much yogurt/soup at once it's worse. Try smaller sips at a time or eating more slowly. Not sure if you're still on liquids. I start solids tomorrow. Can't wait!
  9. I think the previous posts are spot on. It really depends on you, your current health situation, and how your recovery goes. I can only speak for myself- it was pretty easy the first week and I didn't need help. I fixed my own food and can't remember needing my wife or kids to help me out. I specifically didn't want them to help because it was important that I got moving and walk as much as possible. So I did. Walk as much as you can. I would be careful about stockpiling a ton of one type of food over another. Have a variety, since you really don't know what you'll like. I know I bought a bunch of stuff that I never ate (broth drinks, made jello, protein shakes in flavors that were not appealing after surgery). If you have a grocery store in walking distance, maybe that can be part of your exercise to walk there to get what you need for the day.

    Plateau??? Help....

I am 7 weeks out from surgery and have been stuck at 225. After reading all the above I just have to be patient. And will definitely get more exercise in.I started at 238 so at my heaviest when I got my lapband back in 2010 I was 268 so I suppose 225 is better than 238. Still is a bit frustrating though. Anyone in their late 20s - mid 30s?

I’m 4 weeks post op today and I’m 2 weeks away from turning 29 😁 My recovery has gone super well, I have just been tired but that’s to be expected! I mainly chose to have this surgery because I have struggled with my weight all of my life and had had enough of not participating in life and enjoying life as I should be. I also would like to become a mother and would hate to struggle to conceive (I know I still might but this should help at least), I would hate to struggle to keep up, or to teach my child bad habits with regards to food. Also, maybe a bit shallow, but fashion is one of my hobbies and I just 🥺 want to be able to buy affordable and cute clothing that really represent who I am! I did a lot of soul searching during COVID and I was finally able to acknowledge to myself that I was not ever going to get to a healthy weight and maintain without surgery. It was painful but liberating. I am the type of person that once I decide on something, it’s happening and I prefer not to wait a second longer than necessary. So off I went 😊! I’m down over 35 pounds now and I only need to lose 5 pounds more to weigh less than my husband for the first time EVER! I am excited 🥰

    Gain weight on liquid diet?

I've been on my liquid diet for two and a half days and why I gained 4 lb I was weighing 273 last week now I'm at 277 today
  13. You need information quick, So much stuff is not getting done because of Covid in this country. You will need to be proactive and wade through the receptionists. Start with your own doctors surgery, Other options are ringing the hospital you had your surgery and ask for your surgeons secretary. Be insistent and say you have been left without follow up treatment or information. Last option ? Call 111. You should always be given a 6 week follow up appointment when you leave hospital. Covid is no excuse

Anyone in their late 20s - mid 30s?

I am almost 3 weeks post op and I am 33. I decided to have the surgery because I was starting to have medical concerns due to weight. But In all reality I was uncomfortable in my body. I didn’t like to go out and do things because I was so bothered by it. I would dress up and feel confidant only to see my reflection and it would crush me. Or I would spend the majority of my time at a cook out or gathering overly fixated on my shirt being too tight or really anything. I want to get my life back on track. Even more important then all that I need to set a better example for my daughter and teach her how to eat appropriately.
  15. I used to have headaches daily and like you pretty much lived on Excedrine. My doctor put me on meds, and once we got the right dosage I did see a decrease but was still getting them a couple times a week, less severe. In preparation for my surgery I stopped taking the birth control pills and got an IUD. I haven’t had a headache in 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately I spent the last 20 years living with daily headaches that were likely caused by the birth control pills. I’m only a couple weeks post op so crossing my fingers I stay this way because Tylenol does absolutely nothing for a headache for me. Good luck!
  16. I had my gallbladder out in 2015 after a terrible gallstone attack that sent me to Emergency. The gallbladder removal was honestly almost painless post-op. It was done laparoscopically by the same surgeon who did my WLS, and I was in hospital overnight. The discomfort was mild and the only time it peaked was when I was jostled - like when in a car going over a bump. I was given the all clear to travel interstate a couple of weeks after (as it was near Christmas), and the bumping from the plane landing hurt, but that was it. It's an absolute breeze compared to my bypass, which has been very sore post op. The bypass left me feeling like I'd been hit by a truck, and five days out, I still feel like I've taken several hard punches to the gut. The incisions from the gallbladder removal were also much smaller! No more than a centimetre, versus over an inch with the bypass incisions. I've had 3 surgeries, and in order of pain levels, they're: 1(most pain) - Bypass 2(still painful) - knee reconstruction ACL 3(barely any pain) - gallbladder removal. EDIT: It's worth noting that I also had a hiatal hernia repair with my bypass, which has made my post-op pain greater!
  17. Oh, that’s appalling. Can’t believe you haven’t had a post surgery appointment with your surgeon yet. Get on the phone & starts demanding some information, guidance & support & an appointment. I saw my surgeon two weeks after surgery (to the day), dietician early in week 4, GP in week 5 & the surgeon & dietician in week 6. I was given information pamphlets from my surgeon & dietician and the surgeon gave me a great hard cover reference book about all bariatric surgeries, the pre & post surgical stages & recipes.

Post Op care when living alone

I did it alone. No problems. Pain was managed easily with meds but by about day 5 I didn’t need anything. I did spend a lot of time on my couch with my shake (or soup) & water beside me. Though my bedroom & living areas on on the same floor, I have stairs & walked them a couple of times a day. Helps get the gas out plus getting up to get your shakes, broths, fluids, etc. & just generally pottering (carefully) around your house helps your recovery. Just make sure you have all the over the counter meds (pain meds, gas x, stool softener, etc.), shakes, broths, soups, etc. you’ll need for that first week or two. Hope all goes well for you.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Also very discouraged. in 4th week, following plan completely, only 7 pounds lost since surgery. Started at 288. Did lose 15 before surgery. It is not working for me. I get the 60 protein grams, reluctantly drink the hated 68 oz of water, and do not exceed 600 cals, mostly I'm below 500. Very sad.

One week out of gastric sleeve surgery

Today is one month from surgery date. I am thrilled with my weight loss. I had been unable to lose any weight in the last decade, despite trying everything under the sun. My surgeon kept me on liquids for the first 3 weeks. I'm now on pureed foods, and am enjoying finding foods I can eat. Tonight I bought some of the Indian foods in a bag that are microwavable, and ate a tablespoon of each with some cauliflower rice. I don't feel deprived because I'm making it work. I puree things in my blender, and everything tastes amazing, lol, (after all those nasty protein shakes!). I'm really happy with my decision. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Had gastric sleeve and hiatal hernia surgery 2 weeks ago and I still feel pain in my stomach/ lots of gases when I eat, is that normal and will it go away or is this part of life now with gastric sleeve

Post Op care when living alone

I live alone and told no one except my brother I was having surgery. I spent one night in the hospital and then my brother picked me up and took me home. I had everything prepared before hand. Stocked up bottled water, protein shakes, meds, etc. I slept in my recliner for probably a month. Because I didn't take narcotics, I drove on day 4 because I found out I was allergic to the staples and I needed some benadryl. My recovery was actually fairly easy. I spent my days sipping water, protein shakes and walking and napping because I was so tired...and plotting on my calendar how many more days until I could eat something solid! Sipping the water and protein shakes was a full time job the first week! Sounds like you are well prepared already. You probably won't need the nurse.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I had my surgery on 17th September 2021 so now I'm 1 week and 2 days post op. Everyday is better than the last. I'm tracking my journey on Instagram Bypass_09.2021 Sent from my SM-G955F using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I had my gallbladder removed about 10 months before getting sleeved. I gained about 38 lbs in those months and the weight gain didn’t seem to be slowing down so WLS was a must at this point. Comparing the two, I feel like I had less pain with the WLS. I actually asked my mom if she was sure they even did anything! 1. I didn’t need any painkillers after WLS, but I took them for about a week after gallbladder removal. 2. I’m typically a stomach sleeper and was also able to go back to sleeping on my stomach faster after the sleeve. 3. i only needed to sleep on a recliner for 2 days after WLS, but slept in a recliner for about 10 days after gallbladder removal. 4. Moving around was also easier for me after the sleeve, mainly because I felt like I couldn’t stand up straight after the gallbladder removal. 5. I was sleepier after the sleeve and generally had less energy the first week. 6. I had a bowel movement faster after WLS and going to the bathroom was easier in general. 7. TMI but I had sex sooner after WLS than I did after gallbladder removal. 8. Oh, my surgeon used my main gallbladder removal incision (the top one) so I only had 2 new tiny incisions for a total of 3 incisions for WLS. He felt like it was unnecessary for me to have more scars than I should so maybe that’s an individual thing that differs from surgeon to surgeon so I’d ask if that was possible. I only have the 3 WLS incisions visible and the gallbladder ones were so tiny they disappeared (you can only see them if you know where to look). So all in all I’d say my recovery from the sleeve was easier than the gallbladder removal, but of course that’s just me. I’m sure other people have it the other way around. Either way, you can do it! For me, the hardest step was actually deciding and committing to the WLS. Don’t worry, you got this!! Please feel free to message me if you feel like you have more questions or if I missed anything.
  25. I am six weeks out from lapband removal and hiatal hernia repair. I had the band removed after having it for 15 years because of my Gerd. Has anyone developed digestive issues since having the band removed such as stomach rumbling and excessive gas. Doctor says he only removed the band and didn’t do anything to my digestive track so he doesn’t understand how it could be correlated but I never had issues prior to the surgery.
