  1. Good luck with your revision!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. I am considering getting a revision from band to sleeve. Anyone who has revised a band to sleeve, did you do it all in 1 surgery or 2 (band removal and then sleeve?). Have you had success with the revision?

    So Many Quesitons

I currently get food stuck, almost like my band is to tight, although I am completely empty. Do patients with VSG, get food stuck, like Lap-band patients? There's no structure getting in the way but sometimes it feels like I still have my band in. If I eat too fast, it feels like it's stuck. I know in reality that there's nothing in the way but it sure feels like it. Do you have to chew the food until there is just nothing left to chew, like you do with the Lap-band? Sure do Are there no no foods, like there is with the lap-band? It was years before I could eat a sandwich after having the lapband put in. I still to this day can’t eat dry meat, like steaks or pork. If u have problem with some foods, u may have problems with the same foods. I can eat everything, just in really small quantities. The only things I couldn't eat with my band were: pancakes, pineapple chunks, and pizza crust (all p's). I can now eat those things. I'm a rebel. I eat Pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, and chocolate (unlike most people on this board) Are you able to drink when you are eating, unlike the lapband, where you should wait at least 30 min. Ur not sposed to. For the same reason, u wash the food down quicker making u hungrier sooner. However, I was never able to drink after eating with my band cuz the food would act as a "plug" and whatever liquid I put in there afterwards would come right back up. Since it feels similar when I eat now (like there's a "plug") I'm too afraid to try to drink. After 4 yrs of having the band, I'm pretty used to not drinking and can feel when I'm ready (about 30-45 mins) How long was it after your VSG surgery until you could really eat solid foods? 4 weeks of full liquids before starting soft foods. Longest 4 weeks of my life. I cheated after the 1st week with my band but didn't cheat once after sleeved. I was paranoid about causing a leak (rare, very rare). That first bite of refried Beans was like heaven How much food can you eat? Let’s say a year after surgery are you still only able to eat 1/2cup of food at a time? I have read that some poeple feel like "they forgot to put the sleeve on". Does that mean that some days you can eat more then you normally can? I don't measure or weight my food. I just eat until I'm satisfied. A few times I've counted the bites just to see how much I'm eating (and I'm 5 mths out) and I eat about 10-12 bites of any given meal (like I said, I eat everything. Example meal: last nite I had homemade crock pot chili with cheddar cheese on top. I ate 8 bites. I also made cornbread. I ate 3 bites. For Breakfast I'll eat 1 egg and 1 pc of bacon or sausage. Or 6-8 bites of oatmeal. For lunch I'll eat 2/3 of a Lean Cuisine, half sandwich, 1/3 of a burger, 3/4 of a taco, or 1 bite of each of 8-10 items on a buffet) It's the beauty of my sleeve. I know I could lose faster (I'm focussed on maintaining until after the holidays when I'll tackle the last 22 lbs I have left) if I counted everything I put into my mouth but if I could do that well, I wouldn't have ever need wls in the first place. If we could eat healthy in small quantities, none of us would have needed wls. I enjoy not dieting and losing slowly. I'd be happy if I never lost another lb (going from 248 to 152 is pretty good, IMHO) I'd be happy in my size 8 jeans. But that part of me that wants to get to 130 and maybe a 4 is still there, nagging me! So I will cut out my nightime snacking (Cheese Its, dinner leftovers, 1/2 PB and banana sandwich, or popcorn) and that oughta help. I will also watch my carbs (not too low tho). I WILL reach my goal! Good luck with ur decision. So glad my band is out. My band was slipped for 9 mths before it finally herniated (caused from frequent vomting, even after a complete unfill) and caused pain with every bite of food. Had my revision 5 mths ago. I've vomited once (vs daily with band). My fault, ate too much.
  4. Thank you very informative, I'll give my health insurance company a call on the 1st since my plan will be changing to the 2,000 deductible and 70/30. I was going based on a friends experience she had to pay all of it since she had a revision from lap-band to VSG and she said her operation was 10,000 and she was financed. So I was basing my costs on her costs which were probably cheaper since she had no health insurance and was paying the full price.
  5. Hello all!! Ok, let me begin. I am a workout junkie. I love it. Always have. Always will. Why am I fat? Because I like to eat just as much as I love to workout! Anyway, I'm fixing the eating by revising my defunct band to a sleeve. I'm fixing my workouts by creating this thread. I have migrated here from Lap Band Talk. I don't know if anyone knows who or what that is, but this very website is a spin-off from that website. I've been posting there for oogle years. I would often post my workouts there and it really helped to keep me in line with them. However I have not been posting there much at all since I've found my new home. I really don't have a whole lot in common with anyone there anymore. I mean yes, I still have a huge bunch of friends who are supportive of me and my new venue - but those who don't know me don't care nor want to hear me vent about how much I want this crap off my stomach!! :001_wub: That off my chest, let me tell you what this is all about. I like having one specific place to come to, to post what I plan to do as my workout routine for the following month. I really like to push myself and having something like this really motivates me, because with an audience I perform better! This time though I'm really going to push on it. I'm even going to create myself a little ticker so I can keep good track of how I'm progressing to my "monthly goal". I have lots of goals but I'd now like to make one in particular for more encouragement. Anyone is welcome to post here, check in, create a challenge for themself, find motivation to move that body and burn more calories, etc. Give us all advice and motivation even! I surely don't claim to be the end all be all in workouts. Far from it! I just like to chatter with like minded individuals and put myself on pace to earn that extra Lb. per week lost that wouldn't have happened if I didn't do my workouts. With that, and seeing that there are only 2 and a half weeks left for this month I'd like to make an additional challenge for myself to do 100 miles on my stationary bike at home by August 31, 2010. Anyone like to share a personal workout challenge? Would be nice!!!!
  6. I nicely requested to be moved to the other doc in the practice since he is on my plan. It was no problem. I never see him anyway. I always see his PA, who I love. The other doc has his own PA, so now I will see her in October. If I need a revision, the second doc is it. Now i will have a $20 copay instead of $283 per fill.

    Self-Inflicted Liquid Diet

Low carb, less than 30-40gr per day will not only get your body in fat burning mode, it'll shrink the slimy/slippery fat deposits on your liver. I had a 49BMI right before my revision, and I didn't have a liquid pre-op diet, and the night before surgery I could have whatever I wanted. Just clear fluids after dinner then nothing by mouth after midnight. I personally wouldn't torture yourself with liquids only. Eat lean, high Protein foods, low carbs, nothing white, cut sugar, cut flour, and you'll see results.

How did your surgery go? My insurance denied me so I'm going back to Mexico for revision on Feb 3rd. Since you're from the KC area like me we should meet sometime and chat. Kinda like a support group lol. Are you part of a wls support group?
  9. I was first on the list on Monday morning. Unfortunately, i felt queasy even before the surgery! The anesthesologist was awesome, really explained what was going to happen and reassured me alot. The nurses and everyone involved were very kind and helped me overcome my nerves. Coming out of surgery and in the recovery room, I felt pretty awful. I knew I was supposed to get up and walk alot so in spite of feeling like I would rather just lay down, I got up and took a few steps to the big recliner. That first few hours - I admit I felt much worse then I expected. I had a lot of queasiness, but they gave me drugs and i never vomited. I was also feeling alot of the gas pains, across my chest and shoulder. The nurses were again very reassuring that it was very normal, so I just kept trying to get up and do short little walks. By that evening, I felt so much better, but that proved to be a fairly temporary improvement. The next day I woke up feeling cruddy again. My blood pressure was kind of high, so they just had me relax for awhile and monitored until it got back in the normal range. I went home that morning as planned after getting a couple of IV bags to make sure i was good and hydrated. When I got home Tuesday morning, it was time for the ab muscle pain to really kick in. I felt scared to take the pain meds because they hurt my stomach, I found out that having a shot of maalox before pain meds really helped. OMG, I broke down in tears trying to get into bed due to the ab pain. Hubby got me situated in the recliner and i dozed and watched movies with my "support team" and sip sip sipped Water. A fair amount of burping too. It was a production getting me up out of the chair because it hurt so much, but they did throughout the day and I kept walking walking walking until it was time to rest some more. I was so glad I was home at that point though, I felt like I rested alot better there. I got help emptying my drains because I felt yucky and that yucked me out some. Wednesday I woke up and thought - hey, I am gonna live! Those ab muscles still killed me but my overall spirits were high and i did even more walk walk walk... sip sip sip and watched movies. Funny movies - I had to be careful not to laugh too much! I was allowed to start having Protein drinks and they tasted so good to me! I drink the Premier Protein which is a fairly thin liquid and yet tastes nice and chocolatey. I added my Multivitamin liquid and that settled in my stomach just fine. No more maalox needed! Today is Thursday and I can get out of the recliner all by myself - woo hoo!!!! My abs still hurt, but i am feeling stronger. i still have the gas pains, mostly in my shoulder but they are bearable. I am working hard to meet the liquid intake goals, that is kinda hard. I walk around the house alot - doctors orders were to talk naps but to not lay around all the time. I know everybody's experience is different. I was a revision from a band so my surgery was probably more disruptive to the body then "virgin" sleevers. I have always thought I have a high tolerance for pain, but i also know that I tend to get very queasy and not feel good after anesthesia. In the past I got depressed after surgery, i assumed from the drugs. I honestly didn't expect it to be this hard, but I feel myself improving and I feel very positive and have had no feeling of the blues... after those first few miserable hours.. It helped me read other people's experiences to know that it would get better and they were right. Walk, sip lots of fluids, get plenty of rest.
  10. I specifically asked my nutritionist and bariatric coordinator about calories and both said that at this point it's not the focus and they wouldn't give me a number. The BC did tell someone at a support group meeting that she was eating too few calories at 400-600, but they still don't give a number to strive for. I think it's freeing because it gives me more energy to devote to figuring out what I can tolerate and focus on lean Protein. Last night I was really nervous because I had a frozen dinner that was 440 calories, but in the end I didn't eat the whole thing, it had good protein content, and I really hadn't eaten much the rest of the day. For the most part I eat homemade foods, so having this number in front of me made me all weird. I'm only a month out from revision (my first surgery was 5.5 years ago), so eventually I will start tracking my foods again on MFP, etc, but for this period I'm just going to focus on making healthy decisions. It's making it so much easier to make it a lifestyle without being tied to numbers, etc.
  11. That's why they made me wait. Because of the probability of sleeve complications most surgeon won't do a revision if there has been past band complications or band damage. I had to wait 18 months before a surgeon would ok me.

    Tummy tuck in my future!

I am scheduled for June 26th, 2008. I will be having the traditional surgery but with the special consideration for my gallbladder scar. The first consult made it clear that they couldn't do much about my bulge right above the belly button. I have an extra bit of fat on the opposite side from the scar due to the revision I had on the scar a few years ago. They took out some of the fat under and around the scar but it left a bulge of fat on the other side from the scar. I want it to be more symetrical by removing that bit of fat. They have decided to go ahead and incise above the belly button which was not in their original plan. In my second consult I made it clear that I want that fat gone or reduced somehow. So they will do the above the Belly button incision and then if needed will do liposuction later as is deemed necessary. I am 60 and so want this to make me look as good as possible for my remaining years. I didn't get the lapband just to look almost good. I don't expect to be gorgeous but at least look and feel as good as I can. Since I am paying for this I want it to be much improved.

    Sleeve revision to bypass 2/6.

My advice is go with the flow and enjoy the benefits. Living with minor gerd or none at all upped my quality of life 100-fold. For me, the recovery was easier, maybe because I knew what to expect this time around. Or maybe because my body reacted more strongly to having a large part of an organ removed versus the rny. Before you know it, it'll be over. My revision took less than a hour. Afterwards, I was surprised at how I didn't feel any different physically than when I had the sleeve. But I definitely had a new learning curve on how to tell when I am at roughly 80% full, that is when I stop eating (lifetime rule for me). There are different cues for sure as well as well as different side effects if you go one bite too many, or don't chew enough, eat something that your stomach does not agree with... Etc. Hope it goes well for you too.

    Flipped Port :( ???

I think it's odd that all of us have the Realize Band and this happend to us, I too am a side sleeper, never thought about it, but, I was sleeping on my side in the hosptial right after surgery. After my port revision, which was on a Thursday or Friday I can't remember LOL , I went back to work on Monday. My Dr. told me the 2 clips had come loose and were not anchored in, this time he sutured them in.

    Hiccups

I get hiccups when I drink hot liquids (tea mostly). Prior to revision I always thought it was a band thing. But now, without my band I still get the friggin hiccups when I drink hot tea. (Hot chai tea from Starbucks, maybe it’s their cups?) drives me bananas [emoji529]

Dr Soriano and bypass or sleeve?

I didn't have a flu bug, and I was watching what I ate and was losing and still am. But one night I started coughing and couldn't stop for almost a half hour. I sometimes think this is when the band slipped, but I'm not sure. Anyway, doctor said it had to come out. No choice to a revision or a new band. He feels bypass would be better for me as he is fairly sure it would get my type II diabetes in check (wouldn't have to take any insulin or medication) along with my hypertension. I think there are times when we can do everything right and then "life happens" not our fault it just happens.

    Show Me How.....

Hugs first of all. What is the problem other than reflux that is causing you to have a revision in the first place? In starting over, you know the routine of going on liquids for a day or two or maybe a week, mushies, and then solid foods.
  21. Hey all.. I have New york medicaid and medicare. I had lapband in Sept 2010'. It didnt really work out. I am trying for the sleeve does anyone know how medicare treats 2nd surgeries? weight loss after band to sleeve

Hi I had my revision Dec. 11, 2012 I've lost about 50 lbs My LAPBAND had moved up to my esophagus and had started heart complications. I was very lucky to have figured it out after years of trying to adjust my band and couldn't keep Water down until past 1pm. I am very happy with my decision. I love my sleeve. I've stalled sometimes but I believe that's normal. My nutritionist recommended I start liquids again. I've noticed sometimes I do get back into bad habits if I don't have my food planned and ready to eat. I have a very busy day usually on the go and I tend to fall off the wagon and then hate myself for it. Today is a new day and I plan on trying to do my liquid only day.

    Starting From Where I Am

This is officially my first blog. I don't really know what to say, so I'll just recap my journey so far. I had my surgery May 4,2011. Since then, I have lost 100 pounds, dropped from size 28/ 30 to a size 16/18 in most things, I can wear L and XL t-shirts instead of XXXL and XXXXL t-shirts. I still have a long way to go in my journey, but everyday is new and exciting. Now that I've lost a substantial amount of weight, I'm ready to step up my exercise game. I recently started working with a running coach. I have had 2 runs (well, honestly more of a walk/jog/crawl than an actual run) and I have my 3rd tomorrow. The first time I ran this past Tuesday, I almost cried because for a split second I thought I could almost fly. It felt soooo amazing. Of course, the soreness took over for the next two days and I kinda wanted to die , but all in all, I'm feeling so much more energetic and ready to take on more and more. I'm so happy with my decision up to this point, and even with a minor set back a few weeks ago of having to have a revision done due to a flipped port, I am back on track. I hope to lose another 100 pounds when this is all said and done, but I'm in no rush to get there. I am so happy where I am, and where I am is a place I thought a year ago that I could never be again (if that makes sense), so it's all good. I'm just going to keep on taking this one day at a time, enjoying life to the fullest, and enjoying each non scale victory as it comes my way.
  24. So I had my surgery on 6/30. I was in the hospital for 2 days. The surgery pain was much easier than the band or the band removal (mine was removed in April). I lost about 12lb by one week. Weirdly I lost the Water weight from the surgery more quickly than with my band removal. At 3 weeks out now I am down 19-20lbs. My assessment is that this surgery is easier than the band. With the band my stomach was more swollen and I had more trouble with liquids for longer. With this surgery I really have had no problems sipping away and making my Fluid goals. The only thing that has been hard is that I have had no appetite and experienced no thirst even when I need to drink so I need to remind myself. I did purees with zero problems measuring my food, eating slowly just like with the band. Today is my first day of solids. I packed 4oz of tuna salad and 4 whole wheat crackers for lunch in my cooler bag. I ate maybe 2 1/2 ozs of tuna salad and 3 crackers about 2 hours ago and feel very full now - almost don't want to drink. To describe the full-feeling it is somewhat similar to the feeling of full with the band in that I feel full up to my esophagus - kind of like a small lump in my throat but it doesn't feel painful or like I need to throw up like it did with the band - also my chest/stomach just feels full.. hard to explain. I keep getting worried when I see posts on other parts of this site about people struggling so much to drink and eat and I haven't had this experience. Is my sleeve smaller? Is my anatomy different post-banding? This is what I like to think: after 8 years with the band I have learned portion control and how to chew, sip and eat in a bariatric-friendly way. I really hope this is true! Sorry for the long post but when I was leading up to surgery I was really looking for answers to some of these questions. Remember I am soooo new so take it with a grain of salt!
  25. According to the Medicaid website it varies by state but it really boils down to the first surgery and if it is causing you problems. If you are having complications and need the revision to save your life then I'm sure your surgeon will work with Medicaid to get it approved. However, there are tons of people on this forum who do not have insurance or have a weight loss exclusion on their insurance policy or simply can't afford it and are saving to be able to get there. I understand the need for Medicaid but for reasons other than WLS.. If the revision will help save your life, co morbities, bad lap band, etc. then I truly hope this works for you =)
