    Band to Sleeve in 2015

I'm also worried about the same things. Going through the revision next week myself

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

how are doing @Jlkhollins? I know it is so scary, revisions are riskier than "virgin sleevers" but even so, the vast majority of people are just fine! Even the peeps with complications do fine in the end... so think very positively... you will do great!
  3. I see that you are about a month out. I am also a band to sleeve revision and had some complications while in the hospital. I had to stay 5 days instead of the usual 2. My surgery was on 12/9 and I am feeling very good now. For the first few weeks I was iffy on how I felt. As long as you know from your doc that you are ok inside, I would just keep trying to drink your water; sometimes Water enhancers work. I was not able to drink plain water in the first month so I used enhancers and it went down just fine. Also, of course the Protein is important. Just sip, sip sip and keep plugging along. You should be able to eat your protein by now in foods but I have gone back to shakes at times. You'll feel back to normal soon. All the best to you.
  4. I think number three is a biggie and number 5 strongly correlates. Just show some willpower, just move more, just cut out the sugar or cheese or alcohol or whatever. Ugh. That said, I see a difference from when I was banded in 2008 to my revision this month. Whether its due to the AMA classification of obesity as a disease or the recognition by the medical community that for many people the only route to long term success is surgery or the numbers of people undergoing surgery and seeing success or insurance realizing lower expenses from healthier people following WLS, I think there's been a perceptual change.
  5. I was banded in 2008. For the revision was in the hospital for 2 nites. I had no issues. I'm a pain weenie but this was no problem. I have also been nervous that I will fail on this because I had such limited success with the band. But I am older and hopefully a little wiser now and I prepared for this one differently. I was too cavalier before. Now I'm much better prepared and committed to the changes required for success.

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

So, after two years of work (and fighting insurance) I am now just a few hours away from revision surgery. I am nervous...because it is surgery. And, I am nervous because of the increased complication risk with lap band to VSG surgery. I keep telling myself I am in the best place possible for this surgery...no health issues, not on medicine, no serious complications with the band (other than not losing weight). But, I'm still afraid I won't wake up or I will spring a major leak, get sepsis, and die. Here's hoping that my wild imagination is just that....wild!

    Calling January Sleever????

I am sitting in a hotel room in Richmond waiting for 7:00 am to get here so I can check in at the hospital. I am nervous...because it is surgery. But, I feel like I am in competent, capable hands. I am a little extra nervous because my surgery is a revision from lap band to VSG. I understand there are increased risks, and I am just hoping that I remain healthy through this process. Good luck to everyone going tomorrow!!

So I THINK I've decided on RNY...

@@losing_the_band Hi there. I am a 3rd timer also. I had the Lapband in 2008, then revised to VSG in 2010 and revised again to the Bypass in July of last year. No regrets at all. You're making a good choice. I have not had any problems at all, which for the first time ever is a nice thing to say. Any idea on when you will be revised? Best to you.
  9. LilMissDiva Irene

And back in the hospital I go!

@@bellabloom I am terribly sorry you are experiencing these complications. I had complications too post op with both my LapBand and then my Vertical Sleeve. I was revised to RnY GB in July of last year. Thus far I have not had any complications at all. *knock on wood*... there have been times when I too felt like I made a mistake having WLS. I feel your discouragement, trust me. I pray that you heal this time around. I also hope it's nothing too drastic. I mean yes an ulcer is not good news, but it can be fixed. Hang in there.
  10. I was originally set on revising to the VSG, but I'm fairly certain that I'm going to do the RNY instead. The VSG just has so many "what-ifs." I've already had the lap-band twice (first one had to be replaced due to complications, and now I'm having issues with the second one), so this will be WLS surgery #3 for me. I don't want to possibly need to go for #4 if the VSG doesn't work as well for me. The RNY has long-term result statistics available, whereas the VSG only has truly long-term stats when it was used in conjunction with the DS. My metabolism is horrible for several reasons, so I'm worried that a solely restrictive procedure just won't be enough. It probably would have been if it were my first procedure (I did very well with my first band, until I started having issues), but my metabolism is so much lower now. I'm just so tired of struggling with my weight, and now that my back is going bad (degenerative disk disease with a herniated, extruding disk), I just don't have the energy to fight both. It's like a never-ending cycle. My back won't get better unless I lose weight, but I can't lose weight because my metabolism is so low, and I can't increase my metabolism by exercising the way I need to because my back is bad. I feel like the malabsorbtion from the RNY (even though it is temporary) will help me lose enough weight initially that I'll be able to get back in the gym without killing my back.

    Trying to decide...

I had the vertical sleeve in October 2013. Now I'm having a revision to gastric bypass because I can not get the reflux under control. Had I known what I know now about reflux and the sleeve not being the best choice I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from a second surgery.

February 3 revision surgery (sleeve to RNY) feeling a bit anxious!
  13. BeagleLover, Was your surgery revision surgery? If so - when were you banded?
  14. I revised to gastric bypass and I feel great (3 weeks post-op). I had terrible port pain and I'm so glad to have that thing out of me!!
  15. I got my band in July 2013. I lost 25 lbs during the pre-surgery liquid diet, but only 10 additional lbs in the following year. I had issues with the band once I started getting fills. I had a hard time keeping food down and threw up almost every time I ate solid food. My surgeon then started the fill/unfill game. I went back and forth so many times. While this was going on, I continued to have unrelenting port pain. It was unbearable from the day I had surgery. My surgeon said that I'd get used to it, but I never did. It just hurt all the time. It prevented me from exercising, sleeping, and I couldn't even sit in a chair in the same position for too long. In May 2014, my surgeon basically washed his hands of me. He unfilled my band completely and told me that it had to be removed because my body just "rejected" it. He also told me that he would not recommend another surgery for me. I regained 30 of the 35 lbs I lost. I got a second opinion and had a revision to gastric bypass 3 weeks ago. My new surgeon told me that he had never seen a lapband port placed in the position mine was in. He said that it was too high and was sitting right on top of my highest rib. He wasn't surprised at all that I had so much pain. Vindication! My surgeon and PCP both doubted my pain when I complained about it ALL THE TIME. Long story short - I'm thrilled to have the band and port out of me! I'm still on the mushy food phase right now with bypass, but so far so good. I don't have any hunger at all and have to remind myself to eat. That's something that never happened with the band. I'm much happier and more comfortable. The port pain really put a damper on my life for 1.5 years. So glad it's GONE!! Since the day of the revision surgery, I have lost 21 lbs.
  16. I was banded in 2001 and had a similar experience. I had it removed in September 2011 because it was slipped, pouch was dialated, danger it could suddenly slip further and cut off ability to swallow Water. I had the same fears you express about the sleeve so I didn't commit to revision. I was so hungry and frankly kinda down after the band removal. I was grieving that whole failure. Anyway my raging hunger made me realize I needed WLS and I was sleeved in Dec 2011 I lost 150# in 14 m months to get to goal. The sleeve has worked for me but it is still alot of effort for me. No pain or vomiting though!
  17. Yes, my revision was done all in one surgery. My surgeon said it was the most common surgery she does. @@giugiu37 my insurance paid for the revision because when my band slipped I regained most of the weight I had lost, so I had to get it out either way and the weight gain showed that I would not be successful without restriction.

    Stopped losing HELP!

I have had vthe same issue, 3 months out and no weight loss after revision. My doc said it's not enough protein and need more exercise for me, which is hard to do with my chaotic life. I would definitely try is cutting out sugars and carbs to a bare minimum, and change up what exercise you are doing. I tried changing my focus area on weight training to 2 days on arms & back and 2 days on legs, with cardio before bed. It's helped me break the stall.
  19. How did your qualify for revision surgey? I am trying to get the bypass, but they keep talking about my BMI. I currently have lap band so i qualified to get that Wright? So my biggest question is how do i get my insurance to pay?
  20. Hello I am almost three months out of the sleeve and haven't lost in over a month I upped my water and protein and even went back to liquid for a couple days to see if that would jump start it. I have only lost 20 since surgery which I know is good but I feel over a month is a long time to not lose anymore. For you who revised when did you guys make that step or is there something else I can try to start my weight loss again?
  21. So I'm coming clean that I have an eating disorder. For the past two or three months I have been binging and purging. I had a history of Bulimia 6 years ago during which I lost 100 lbs. I was not honest with my surgeon about it and was going to revise to the sleeve on 4/21. I made an appointment and came clean to him and he cancelled my surgery and is refusing to treat me. I have only lost 15 lbs with the band because I have been overeating and generally eating unhealthy. I spent the night in the hospital last week for these issues and its led to me getting help. I started seeing an Eating Disorder Therapist and I have been referred to a day program for Eating Disorders that meets 5 days a week. I am also going to start Over Eaters Anonymous. Right now I am trying not to focus on my calories but eating small band appropriate meals. I am hoping to implement a good exercise routine as well. I hope I am now on the path to a new healthy life and can now get good use out of this tool. Just felt the need to come clean.
  22. Where in Florida are you? I'm in Miami/Aventura. I'm hopefully getting a revision from band to either VSG or RNY (probably RNY), but I'm still trying to find a good surgeon.

Why You Lose Hair After Surgery

My hair thinned about 3-4 months after I had the lapband. It finally grew back and I just revised to bypass. I'm dreading the day when I start losing more hair in the shower
  24. I have been through so much in the last year..... I originally had my band done on April 27, 2012. Over the course of the 2.5 years, the majority of my diet was liquid. I could rarely keep things down. When I was lucky enough to keep something down, I'd eat it at a later date and then it would come back up again. The 1 cup of food I was supposedly able to eventually eat never happened. My surgeon kept saying I was fine. I had to go to the hospital twice last year, a CT and ultrasound done and was told everything was fine...no slippage said the surgeon and again, I was fine. I don't think so. The last 6-7 months of last year, I kept growing sicker....toward the end only keeping Water down. But supposedly I was FINE. I sought a second opinion the last part of last Oct. by another physician...this time one specializing in bariatrics not just a general surgeon. He said that not everything can be seen on a CT scan or ultrasound. I had an Upper GI in Nov. and was found to have a slipped band...quite slipped and was eroding. I saw the pictures. So it was immediately deflated. I already had some relief. On Dec. 5th, my band was removed. My band had eroded two complete holes in my stomach and the port had become encapsulated in the muscle. No wonder I felt so bad! It was such a relief, I cried. I also saw surgery pics. Needless to say, I could not have a revision done at that time. The doctor was quite sure that I could get insurance to cover the revision. But, I knew that there were no guarantees. I wanted to believe but there was always a little fear in the back of my mind. I tried not to think about. I just concentrated on recovering and trying not to gain too much weight since I could finally keep down food. I have gained 10 pounds. I would normally feel bad about that but the dr. said that even if I was eating very little and the best of the best, compared to water, I'd gain weight. Anyway, I got word today that there is medical necessity for the sleeve gastrectomy. I had to read the "medical necessity" part of the letter about 7 times. I then broke down in tears. My surgery is scheduled for a little over a week away. Will be starting pre-op diet tomorrow. I am so looking forward to being healthy again and finally lose my weight after almost 3 years on this journey. At my lowest on the band, I had gotten to 185 lbs but had slowly regained to 208 (when I could drink more than water, I had some ice cream shakes as the Protein shakes and Soups were getting old. Imagine eating only Protein Shakes and soups for about 90% of your diet for 2.5 years! So yes, I added the ice cream shakes. I asked my new surgeon why it had eroded and so badly. He said that it usually happens when too much pressure is put on one side of the band and stomach....that usually happens when it is put in(which could explain why I never really could eat). Also, I am sure my GERD had a little something to do with it. They said that because of my GERD, the acid attacked the food before it ever got to the pouch (everything is slower) forcing it to be attacked and me losing it before it ever got to the stomach. Then when I vomited, it could have shifted the band a bit putting too much pressure on the one side. So, I wanted to update my story and am hoping that my story may be of some hope and help to others struggling out there. I am so looking forward to next week. Thanks for listening.
  25. I had a vsg in 2012 and initially lost 75lbs before finding out i was pregnant. Something about metabolism changing and birth control not being enough. I have gained all but 20lbs back. I am wanting to have revision surgery to bypass. Do you know of anyone who had a bypass but failed in the first year? Two years? I dont have to be skinny. I just want to be healthier.
