First food after bypass
jsiequist57 replied to Arual85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve surgery on September 16th. I’m down only 4 pounds since then, today being a week and a half out. Should I be more? What have all of you done on almost two weeks after surgery?? -
First food after bypass
lizonaplane replied to Arual85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had sleeve. I'm eating my first solid food right now - a cheese stick. I'm taking tiny bites and chewing them to paste. It's kind of gross, but the real problem is that I had to have a tooth removed the week after surgery (not related) and so I can only chew on one side and even that is uncomfortable. Of course, now that I've had a few tiny bites, I can feel a pain in my chest! -
Minimal to no weight loss?
MshellL87 replied to MshellL87's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
My doctor called in last week and that was when I said I was about 3 pounds down. (Which is now closer to 1.. it had been fluctuating, but I decided to say 3, for some reason.) All he said was, “okay different for everyone. Your starting weight wasn’t as high as some, so maybe you will be slower to lose. Exercise and eat right. I’ll see you in 2.5 months.” I’m feeling very sad. If I were at 3 lbs lost, maybe I’d be okay. But only 1 has me concerned. He is the best doctor in my area for this, but I honestly feel like I had no procedure. I am wondering if there is a way to check and see if my stomach was made small enough? I’m getting desperate. -
Hi.. I am wondering if anyone has experienced basically minimal weight loss with ESG? I had mine on Sept. 8th and have gone down only between 1-3 pounds this whole time. I’m very frustrated and sad. I feel like I should have had more than basically a pound of weight loss in 3 weeks. I feel like the only thing I have lost is money and hope. (Yes I’m following everything correctly.) I don’t understand how I’m one of the only people to not lose weight with a weight loss procedure like this.

Success with gastric sleeve starting with lower BMI?
lizonaplane replied to Mandy2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks out. I had a fair amount of pain the first few days home from the hospital (Like having done a zillion sit ups as someone else said). It made it hard to sit up from lying down, and walking was painful as my stomach hurt when it "jiggled". Today is my last day on liquids and I'm having no issues getting my fluids or protein in. I'm hungry, but less in the last two days (maybe because I'm finally back at work and have things to focus on?). I had lost about 23 kg prior to surgery and I've lost about 5kg since surgery. I'm 160cm and 41 years old. When I woke up in the hospital I had a bit of gerd, and now I'm taking omeprazole (always prescribed by my clinic for one month after surgery). Having GERD after sleeve is a big concern for me, as I occasionally had reflux prior to surgery if I overate. I had to have a tooth removed a week after surgery (unrelated) and it's much more uncomfortable than the surgery at this point. Yesterday I went for a 3.2 km walk, and I was basically at my old (slow) speed. I was a bit more tired than I would have been prior to surgery, but it was also after my first day back at work. I think you need to consider your past unhealthy eating issues and work with a therapist to determine if this is a good idea for you. While I had had some vomiting and overexercising in my past, that was in my teenage years and very minimal. Many people do not get to their "goal" weight with surgery and if that will trigger unhealthy behaviors for you, that's something to consider. -
Dealing: Postop VSG issues
lizonaplane replied to Undeniably_Cute's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Did they prescribe something for Nausea? Like Zofran (ondansetron)? Are you still on liquids? Did you call your surgery center? This seems like something they need to be aware of. I'm glad you have an appointment tomorrow. I am two weeks out and I have no trouble meeting my liquid and protein goals. (although I am hungry a lot). If I eat too quickly or too big gulps I have pain, but I'm still on liquids. I really think you need to talk to your surgery center, and definitely focus more on liquids than protein. Sip, sip, sip, all day long. Keep a drink right by you at all times. Try different drinks and different temperatures of liquids. -
I think it depends on the environment you work in. I work from home, so obviously not an issue. Some people, like those who work in nursing or retail, may have rules against drinking/eating while on duty. In this case, it's best to talk to HR or a manager about getting a doctor's note to allow them to eat/drink while working. After surgery, it's not possible to eat and drink quickly, and you will need to sip all day to get your fluids in. If you have an active or outdoors job, it's even more important to be drinking a lot. I'm not sure why a smoothie in particular would be difficult to drink at work, although you'd have to have someplace to wash the container so it doesn't get gross. I assume you would make it at home? Probably for the first few weeks/months a smoothie wouldn't be the best bet as it's too much fiber and not enough protein; a protein shake is better for that (personally I can only tolerate the premade kind because the ones make with powder always seem gritty to me). I also am eating a lot of yogurt; maybe you will need a small lunch bag/box that is insulated and some ice packs which you can buy cheaply on Amazon.

Xihoid process - Additional surgery
Lynnlovesthebeach replied to Laurie C.'s topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Mine is pretty prominent after losing weight. I didn't know it could be removed. I wish I had known that when I had my latest plastic surgery 6 weeks ago. I had a breast lift, reverse abdominoplasty and back lift. Since it was the same area he could of just taken it out. That is one of the "signs" people use to tell you you are getting to skinny, "I can see your bones!" Mine doesn't really bother me though. -
Xihoid process - Additional surgery
Laurie C. posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Has anyone she had a problem with their xiphoid process? The xiphoid process is the smallest region of the sternum, or breastbone. It’s made up of cartilage at birth but develops into bone in adulthood. It’s located where the lower ribs attach to the breastbone. The tip of the xiphoid process resembles a sword. Mine sticks out and feels like a half of a golf ball most days. It is hard, uncomfortable, my bra rubs on it and it makes me nauseous most of the time when eating. My doctor said it can protrude out with weight gain, but should go back down with weight loss. Mine hasn't and I only have about 35 more pounds to go to my goal weight. I am getting surgery to remove it in about two weeks. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Sent from my SM-G781U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Shouldhaveknown replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Everyone! my name is Chenon and I’m in Wisconsin. I’m set for 10/1 to have the sleeve procedure. I made a deal with myself that I needed to make the changes first for a year and then do the surgery. So I did … and list 125lbs in the last 16 months! Even so, this 2 week all liquid diet is legit killing me. I struggled at first, then I was traveling and that was a different kind of beast, now I’m home and my family eats yummy stuff, but not me. -
Food Before and After Photos

My Birthday dinner at home per my request. My hub makes by far the best filet I’ve ever had. Grilled asparagus with a small slice of sweet potato. Appetizer was Cajun boiled shrimp that I’ve been talking about wanting for a couple weeks so I ate some of those. Resulting in my getting full and eating only a couple bites of filet, two asparagus spears and none of the sweet potato. Birthday cake was strawberry w fresh strawberries on top. Hub made that too!! Had a very small piece of cake bc I was full. -
2 weeks post op gastric sleeve. When does it get easier? I’m having trouble getting even half my water in. Part of me wonders what the hell did I do. I have no hunger at all, to the point where I have to focus my priority to take in a shake and last 2 days I can only do half a shake at a time. And the throwing up heaving seems to be more snd more often. My first post op in on Wednesday but I’m wondering if anyone else has gone through this and when I should expect to be better. I feel like my relationship with food has worsened to being afraid to eat or drink anything . Kinda low right now. Weights coming off, but now I wonder at what cost.

I appreciate your transparency. I still have 8 weeks left until we set a date… I guess. So I will just doing the best I know how and listen to the nutritionist.

September Surgery Buddies!!
FLPhoenix replied to happilylacey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery is this Wednesday the 29th. I am on day 2 of liquid diet. It is especially hard to do this diet right now as I just recently lost my grandfather to cancer we didn’t know he even had until two weeks ago. Tomorrow is his funeral, the day before my surgery. 😔 I really hope to have the strength to recover well,I am emotionally tired and obviously not having comfort food or any solid food during this time is tough. -
Hello I'm 3 weeks post op sleeve revision to bypass. I don't feel any restriction and am able to get in all my protein. On to pureed and yesterday I tried some pureed chili and have felt awful since. I am very nauseated. I don't think it's the chili anymore but perhaps I'm moving too quickly to pureed foods. With the sleeve, I could tell right away if I was full. With bypass, I'm not feeling restriction so it's difficult. I have been weighing and tracking everything. I'm hoping once I'm healed I will feel some restriction. I'm not getting in 64oz of fluid and I'm wondering if this could be the issue. Why are we so dehydrated after WLS? UGH. I love bypass as I had complications with the sleeve right out of surgery. Is there anything I can do for this nausea? I have read some older posts that the 3 week mark tends to be like this but improves around 6 to 8 weeks. I hope so cause I feel pukey. TIA ❤️

what advice you give me statred my weight loss jounery
ms.sss replied to FootballMom92's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
“A loss is a loss is a loss”. It doesn’t matter if u lost 5 lbs last week or .05 lbs. So long as its coming off ur golden. ”An inch is an inch is an inch.” If the scale didn’t move last month, if your pants are looser, ur golden. ”Keep doing what works until it doesn’t”. If its been months with no weight nor inch loss, cut ur cals, increase ur activity, speak to a medical professional. ”Everybody is different.”. Try not to compare urself to others and allow it to get you down. Its not worth the anxiety. ”Manage your expectations.” Set realistic goals based on YOUR body type and lifestyle. Expecting to achieve more than what u are willing to do to achieve it is unhelpful (see “Everybody is different” above). ”Eff the people in the peanut gallery.” Everyone and their mother is going to give you advice and comment on what THEY think YOU should do. They don’t matter. YOU do. ”Celebrate all the little things.” Sometimes just the ability to cross ur legs comfortably or get off your BP meds means waaaaay more than 2lbs off the scale. ”Be kind to urself.” You would (presumably) never purposely sh*t on someone, so why would u do that to yourself. ‘Nuff said. Good Luck!! ❤️ -
That is what I was saying. So you only ate 1 real meal a day. I think that’s where I am going wrong. I’m drinking 3-4 protein drinks (shakes and water) and eating 2 real meals a day. I usually mix my shakes in my coffee as the creamer, sugar, and all. I’m really hoping that the nutritionist can offer some more advice because I am really trying hard to not feel discouraged. The doctor said we just want to see you lose “some” weight before surgery. By the way…. I am still in the working up process. I do anticipate a lot of weight during the 2 week liquid diet liver shrinking phase.

I had my bypass about 7 weeks ago. I lost about 50 pounds leading up to surgery and 20 pounds after. I also choose not to tell people I had surgery. Now that it's noticeable, I've had people comment on my weight loss. Most people just say something like "You lost weight! You look great!" However....there are those people that want to know "How much weight did you lose?" I really don't want to give a number - for a lot of reasons. Usually I just say something like "a lot". Just wondering how other people respond to that question. Thanks!

It feels too easy.

I'm in the same boat. My surgeon, when I brought this up, sort of smirked a little bit and said, "I will tell you what. Go and scramble an egg. See how much you can eat." Three bites later I was DONE. Like, maybe a third of a scrambled egg. This, from a guy who would easily knock down 6 or 8 if I was in training for a competition. So strange, yet so strangely comforting. He also was completely nonplussed that I was consuming 600-800 calories. Quoting verbatim: "You were probably eating 5,000 before, so the difference between 400-500 and 600-800 is negligible for you. When you lose more weight the calories will be more important. Right now, eat protein." The hunger is a lot better two weeks out than it was the first few days. -
I had a "TAP block" or something during the surgery, so I didn't have too much pain in the hospital, plus they gave me IV tylenol and some sort of NSAID they said was safe. They sent me home with an opioid and told me to take tylenol every 8 hours as needed. I took an opioid pill once a day for three days and I didn't need it anymore, but I did have to take the tylenol for a while. I did have a fair amount of pain, especially when sitting up or when getting up from lying down. That was just in the first week. By the end of the first week, it was so much better. At two weeks, I can already sleep on my stomach.

Just got scheduled for 10/11 ... two weeks from today! Aiiieeee!!!!!

I didn't lose much during the pre-op diet, but I didn't expect to. I had already lost almost 50 lbs, and the preop diet wasn't that different than what I was already doing it except slightly more extreme in terms of low carb and low fat. I still got to eat real food. I lost a few lbs in two weeks. In the two weeks since surgery, I've lost about 12-13 lbs. I wasn't expecting to be hungry after surgery, but I am more hungry now than I was pre-op. I have heard this gets better once you get to eat solid food. I sure hope that's true! Good luck!

I am pescatarian and eat 2 meals a day. My day usually consist of: protein shake for breakfast, fish and veggies for lunch and dinner. My snacks are cucumbers, avocados, nuts, etc. I log everything I put in my mouth down to my vitamins. I meet with my nutritionist on Wednesday so I can her take on it. I agree that I am more than likely taking in too much protein which is stalling my weight loss vs. the brand. So 1 protein shake or protein water a day for me. For those who had the surgery… did you encounter any let downs or difficulties during that phase.

Post Op care when living alone
lizonaplane replied to Adugal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes, walking made me tired until a few days ago, and I didn't drive until almost 2 weeks out. I don't ever like to drive, so that's not exactly surprising. We were told not to drive for 4-5 days. -
From what I can remember, there was nothing I couldn't do on my own (but of course i milked all the help that was offered to me, lol). Walking wiped me out for the first week or so, so I'd suggest getting all the stuff you'd need (groceries, meds, basic living necessities) to last you a few days so you don't have to go out and get them. Edit to add: actually, i just remembered the one thing I couldn't do (or didn't want to do) for a couple weeks was drive. Twisting to get my seat-belt on, or checking my blind spot was a little ouch-inducing).
