    September Surgery Buddies!!

I had the same feeling, and I'll warn you that while you're working off the effects of anesthesia and the gas and fluid they float into you, you will probably have a real "what have I done" moment. But today (four days out!) I had the most insane levels of energy. I didn't run, because I'm trying to be careful of my innards at least until the surgeon sees me again in a week or so, but I easily could have. It is the most liberating feeling ever.

    Eating out

My job gave us a Panera gift card for job appreciation. I'm at 6 weeks from surgery date not sure about using the gift card. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Sent from my SM-N981U using BariatricPal mobile app

The article was on sage bariatric which is a weight loss center in Texas. They have a lot of good information but this the first time I have read anything specific to women. Most of my weight loss happened in the first 6 to 8 weeks so far 30 lbs. But for the past 6 weeks since I have been eating solid food I have not lost weight. My nutritionist suggested eating more calories since I was having difficulty in the beginning eating anything over a 1/2 cup. But I am pass that now and I have to make myself stop at a cup so that I don’t overeat and/or reach my restriction.

    Post-op blood thinners

Blood thinner shots once a day for 7 days for me after WLS. Oh, and I also had to blow into a incentive spirometer thing they gave me 10 times every few hours for 7 days. P.S. Now when I had my plastic surgery, I wasn't prescribed blood thinners nor did I have to blow into that thing *shrugs*. But they did put these cool automatic leg pumping compression things on (oh, I loved them) for 2 days at the hospital, and then leg compression stocking for 1 week.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I have lost two pounds in the week and a half since surgery. It’s rather discouraging at this point. I’m trying to follow the diet as best I can, though I have had a few missed meals. My big problem is that I am taking two stool softeners together as directed by the doctor, and I haven’t had a bowl movement since surgery. It doesn’t cause me any discomfort but I’m quite worried. I’m going to call them again on Monday.

    First month weight loss

@DanielleMc79, it may be misleading to compare 1st month weight loss without taking into account surgery day weight (and height), as well as if a person lost a considerable amount of weight already before surgery. All these factors (and more) will affect how much a person will lose. With that said: I'm 5'2". Surgery Day weight was 223.2 lbs. Lost 11.8 lbs in the two weeks immediate prior to surgery on the liquid diet (no other loss before that). At one month post, I was 201 lbs, so a total of 22.2 lbs lost (ASIDE, its funny because for the past 3 years I always thought I lost 21lbs tat first month, but I just checked my records, and looks like I've been lying all this time!!!) How tall are YOU? Surgery Day weight?. Any weight lost before surgery?

Do you happen to have link to this article? I would be interested in reading it. My initial response would be: if you are following your program, try to give it time, people lose weight at different rates, and is probably a little early at 6 weeks to think this isn't going to work. But I get the anxiety, you will read pages and pages of other people who feel the same way. With that said, to better offer suggestions (just suggestions, mind you as we are mostly not medical professionals and cannot assume we would know what is best for you based on a post on an internet forum)...what are your stats? Starting weight, height? How much weight lost so far? What is your daily average caloric intake?
  8. Well, if by taste bud changes you mean changing from wanting to eat everything to nothing at all, then yes, for me it was as soon as I woke up from surgery. I had like total food aversion for about 2 weeks....I barely ate anything (we're talking like 300-400 calories in a WEEK, yikes) It slowly got better, by around month 3 i would only happen maybe 1/2 the time. Food aversion aside, I did notice immediately that I couldn't stand sweet stuff (i.e., that effing protein shake). Mind you I have been sorta cured of this by now (i'm almost 3 years out). I love me some desserts, but i prefer less sweet ones. If I do have a super sweet, say butter tart, I'll have like 1 bite, maybe 2. Any more and I'll get sick. I also noticed that I reeeaaaallly liked salty stuff when a hint of an appetite made an appearance after 2 weeks (still like salty stuff today acutally). And while I enjoyed the salads regularly pre-op, it is now my go-to meal. Used to like creamy dressings, now I only like vinaigrette. Started eating salads almost every day around 4-5 post op to today.

Who lost a lot before surgery?

Thanks! This is the first day I'm back on my computer. I am slowly feeling less pain, although it's still more pain that I expected (whoever described this as "discomfort" was either joking or a masochist). It hurts unless I am lying down. I have more hunger than I expected and I'm taking the omeprazole as directed. I finally had a BM after a week!!! It took four different types of laxatives. My surgery was Monday and I took my last opiod on Thursday. I think I took three total after coming home from the hospital.

Do not give up, stop worrying about stalling and just stick with it. I am 4 years out from my surgery. This is a process. You did the right surgery! Concentrate on other things you like to do. I’ve lost 95 lbs and I’m still loosing! There have been plenty of stalls. Started at 230. I’m 5’2”. When you stress you eat more, so just try to enjoy your life. It will happen.
  11. I recently came across an article that stated that a small percentage of women ‘miss the hormone’ mark in that they only lose 30-40 lbs total. This seems to only affect female sleevers. Has anyone heard of this phenomenon. I have been in a weight stall for almost 6 weeks and I have been researching articles to help explain what is happening when I came across this article. now on top of everything else I am questioning my decision not to have bypass over sleeve. I was terrified of bariatric surgery and thought that the sleeve was less invasive even with the lack of long term data on its effectiveness. To say the least I am totally demoralized at the moment and feel that I made the wrong decision. I am three months out which I know is early still but I am scared that the more I heal and the more food I can eat this will lead to eventual weight regain instead of just a stall

    No Stall

I am hoping I am going to avoid the stall. I have been stifling with the program to the letter. No cheating at all. Fingers crossed. It does seem like mostly women get the stall or is it just not men commenting. I know many more women than men get the surgery.

    My VSG Play-by-Play

Update: Getting much easier to deal with. My energy levels are coming back though I’m still as weak as a newborn kitten. Gas pains got a lot better, especially once I finally had a BM. I think it was backing up in there—take your Dulcolax or Miralax or milk of magnesia religiously! I do get grinding hunger pangs that feel like my stomach is literally twisting on itself. I made some protein jello (big box of orange sugar free Jello plus half a scoop of vanilla whey protein = creamsicle) for when I can’t handle the pains. They pass quickly but are debilitating. 8 cal of protein jello and I can sort of stave them off. I walk one minute every 15 minutes plus 5k a day which takes about 40-45 minutes. I’ll start running once I feel like I can sweat safely. Scale victory: down 9.6 lbs. in three days. NSV: Had to size down in shorts and throw out unders that are too big. Also my BP went from 145/85 with two meds a day before surgery to 123/68 with one med three days out.

Weight Loss Stagnation 10 Months Post-Op

@Paul.VDH No worries - OK, my 2 cents on "pouch reset" and "counting calories" - Let's look at it logically.... We all know you have to consume less calories than you burn - Otherwise = weight gain. At 10 months out, let's face it, you're bored with the "diet" and ready to venture into new foods. At least I know I was. For me, I simply had to come to a compromise with myself and knock on wood, so far it's working. You can do the pouch reset, and you WILL lose weight by going through the phases again - IF you're doing that to get back on track, then go for it. IF you're doing it to lose 5-10 lbs quickly and then go back to what you're doing today - It's a temp fix. No different than what many of us have done before on previous diets. Use the app to make yourself AWARE of what you're doing to self-sabotage and make realistic modifications from there. If you want something that's "forbidden" (cake, alcohol, fried food, etc.), have it - BUT, in a reasonable quantity - I was just talking to a friend last night who also did the surgery and we were talking about these things - Instead of eating something like it's the last time you will EVER have it again (food funeral?), have a bite or two and then put it up and replace it with something more reasonable if you're still hungry. Example - Last night my husband had country fried steak (one of my all time favorites - can you say comfort food!!) - Rather than have 3-4 ounces of it - I had two bites and was still hungry so I had a protein shake. A month or so ago, I would have eaten it until I was stuffed and then swear I wouldn't indulge again (and of course I would!). Drinking... well, again, I told myself that if I was going to fall off the wagon, I should make it worth it and over do it. I'm consciously working on enjoying a glass of wine (vs. a bottle) or a glass of bourbon (vs 1/2 a bottle!). At just over a year out, I pretty much eat and drink whatever I want. It's been an adjustment, but slowly but surely I'm getting where I want to be. Many days/weeks I don't track. When I find that I'm self-sabotaging (I get on the scale each and every day), I go back to tracking. Seeing it in black and white (both the scale and the tracking) helps me get back on track to maintain and/or lose. I may or may not ever get to my goal weight, but I'll be damned if I'm going back to where I started.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

The gas pains are so annoying but they do get better over time. I’m four days out and definitely still have it sometimes. One thing (sorry if TMI) is that the gas pains get less bad once you have a bowel movement. It took three DAYS for that to happen and I immediately get better and had way less gas. The “foamies” I get when I consume too fast. I forgot to sip yesterday and chugged probably 3-4 oz. of water and was in agony for probably an hour. The hunger pangs are the worst, it feels like my stomach is literally twisting itself like a wet washcloth. I made protein Jello (orange sugar free gelatin with half a scoop of whey protein isolate dissolved in the cold water used for the gelatin) for when I absolutely can’t hack the “grinding”. The big packet of Jello makes 8 portion cups and I usually eat about half a portion cup, so a whopping 8 cal. It helps a lot. I haven’t weighed myself yet today (doing it every day for the first two weeks per doctor’s suggestion—“you’re gonna wanna see the numbers”, then weekly after that) but yesterday morning I was 9.6 down from surgery weight in three days. I know that won’t last but some of these are numbers I haven’t seen in a decade, I already had to size down in my favorite Carhartt shorts, and had to throw out the larger size chonies because they were starting to hang off me. My blood pressure the day before surgery on two BP meds was 145/85. My PCP took me off the one with the water pill as of the day after surgery and last night when I checked, my BP was 123/68 on one med!! I am STUNNED how fast that happened. Almost like my body is like “YES let’s get this done, pitter patter!” Energy level is coming back, but am still weak. I walk 5k every day at least and once the incisions heal and I feel like I can sweat safely I’ll start running. Day after surgery was the absolute worst and then it’s a dramatic improvement. Already the best decision I ever made for my body. It’s really amazing to think, “This is the last time I’m ever gonna see this d**n number on that scale.”

    First month weight loss

On surgery day I was 238 (18/8). Last Tuesday I was 4 weeks post op and was 220, so I lost about 18 pounds.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Today made my 1st week post op. Doing awesome and taking it one day at a time.
  18. Losing little in the first week isn’t uncommon. In fact some see an increase in the scales. It’s from all the fluid they pump into you during & after surgery. It can take several days for you to pee it all out. After the initial post surgical pain reduces you still will experience twinges & sharp sudden spasms - sometimes random sometimes after certain movements. It’s all part of healing & your body getting used to the changes that have been made internally. Be careful lifting & reaching for a few weeks to ensure you don’t pull any internal stitches too. If your pain persists &/or increases contact your medical team. If you also experience dizziness, fever, distended tummy &/or bloody stools go to the hospital ASAP.
  19. Have to admit I can’t remember exactly when it began after my sleeve surgery but I think it was pretty soon afterwards. It was very noticeable from week 3 when I was on puréed food because I had more food options for my tastebuds not to like. Prior to that I only had a protein shake & soup each day. The shakes tasted awful but they always did to me. I had some hand surgery this week & noticed the next day that water tasted awful. So I think anaesthetic is a contributing factor.
  20. I have had zero pain. Up until today. I had surgery on the 8th so just over a week ago. I’ve lost zero weight. I’m following the diet perfectly. But today, I get a pain that’s just under my left side rib cage. Sometimes it’s on my left side where my ribs are but deeper. I heard leaks can be a complication. I’m terrified of that!

    First month weight loss

I started the pre-op diet at 242 on 8/30. On the day of surgery (9/13) I was 230. This morning I was 224… I’m just hoping it continues! I’ve been like this for so long it’s kind of hard to believe that it’s working… but the stalls are VERY common, just keep at it and stay focused. You’ve got this!!

    That Guy

Best of luck to you. I'm an extrovert, too, and let me tell you, even with the small weight loss I have between the pre-op and this week, I am already a bundle of energy... I'm gonna be annoying when I get down to fighting weight!
