  1. Dumping is not guaranteed. So maybe not the best ideas to make a decision on that. You posted on the bypass thread so you'll get a lot of pro bypass perspectives, too. I decided bypass because I wanted the greatest chance of my co morbidities being completely resolved. I wanted long term data. I've been on this site a while and I can't figure out if sleeves are just being offered more lately and there by we are hearing more about folks not being able to eat being 6 wks, 6 months out and other stuff or if sleeves are more vocal about it. Can't tell. I'm two weeks out and can tolerate everything I tried with no problems, nausea, vomiting. I know when I'm am eating too fast but I think that would be the same for everyone at this point. You need to make this decision with your surgeon. I think most people go with their guts and at their fear edge. Some people are gonna be creeped out by the re routing, I was afraid of the long line of stitching with the sleeve or developing any sort of reflux, heartburn etc. Also, what sealed the deal for me and you might ask your surgeon. How many of each procedures has he/she done? Which one has he/she done the most revisions or fixed complications with? And how comfortable with it are they? If his or her child needed bariatric surgery which would they recommend? Honestly, you are young and healthy and would probably do well with a uncomplicated sleeve or bypass process, but you may not need all the bypass has to offer.

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

I am so excited to revise in 13 days. I lost 100 lb with the band to bmi 21 but regained 50lb due to slippage And pregnancies. I feel that I lost the weight first time round in a really unhealthy way basically because it was so hard to eat protein and veggies! In the last two years I have really educated myself on fitness and nutrition but like all of us I just can't lose the weight (portion control is non existent!) I feel like the sleeve will give me the right appetite for the kind of life I want to live with the added benefit of no sliming, pb'ing restricted foods, fills and getting stuck.

    Advice needed

The risk of leak and other serious complications is about double for revisions but it is still a single digit risk. I think it depends on how much you need the surgery to save you from obesity. I revised 3 years ago and am half my former size as a result. There is a band to sleeve revision forum with lots of stories...
  5. Hello fellow bandsters/VSG'ers, I had my surgery on 1/29 in Richmond, VA. The band was removed and revised into the gastric sleeve in one surgery. The surgery itself lasted about 1 hour and fifteen minutes. I was in the hospital for a day and half and now staying in a hotel in Richmond until I can head home. I am working on liquids...and more liquids and trying to understand this new stomach, which is a lot different than my old. Can anyone tell me what your post-op (first few days after surgery) was like? I am incredibly sore in my abdomen, but have no other pain. I am off of narcotics at this point and just managing by moving (lots of walking). How long was it before the swelling in your abdomen went away? What was drinking like for the first week? I am getting fluids down but occasionally hear a gurgling noise. I imagine my stomach is still swollen and wondering where the other half (or more) went. Jennifer

    Aetna and Conversion

I was banded Aug 2007 and revised on September 2014. I have Aetna and no issues at all. My doctor told Aetna that the band did not work, and that I gained all my weight back from the lap band. All I had to do was blood work, EKG, chest xray and to get clearance from my family doctor. The whole process took about a month. Aetna paid everything except for 300.00 for the nutrionist. (42,000 total)

    Sleevebuddies

My sleeve surgery (band-to-sleeve revision) is the 16th. I'm so excited.... and glad to have one last "hurrah" with Super Bowl Snacks - I start my preop diet on Monday. Be well and yay for all of us!
  8. Queen - some people do lose weight post plastics but alot of times you don't. At first it is the Water retention, and then at least for me my appetite went way up due to the metabolic boost. I was lucky to maintain my weight...haha. Some people get that metabolic boost and then for some strange reason don't get a boost in appetite. Also, I had to very limited activity for 6 long weeks... another reason I am sure that I didn't lose weight post plastics. What difference does 5-6 pounds make? ife - I was a revision from band to sleeve. I had a band for 10 long years and never really did well with it but have maintained a very large weight loss post sleeve. There is revision forum that has alot of info and peoples stories. This forum is the sleeve vets forum. some people use 5:2, which is just an intermittant fasting technique, to get to goal, or to lose a regain. None of us encourage this for sleevers in their first year post op...
  9. As I'm approaching my revision surgery, I found this page fascinating to read because these are my fears - the future years with the sleeve since I failed with the band. I do have a question though - what is the 5:2 that you all keep talking about? Your stories have been inspiring and I hope I can be as successful as you. Lori
  10. I was prescribed Adipex (Phentermine) when I was in my pre-Band medically supervised diet back in 2008. I lost 70 lbs with it (and doctor supervision and diet journaling) prior to surgery. At first, taking it made me a little nauseated, so I didn't want to eat - therefore instant appetite suppressant. Then it started to mess with my blood pressure and my sleeping. I took it for almost a year, I think, before and for a little while after lapband surgery. Getting off of it didn't cause the weight to return (or bring its friends), but that was because of the lapband. Since then, I have had trouble with my LapBand (having revision surgery in Feb 2015), and I was prescribed it once again. Not so good this time. - If I take it, I'm so jittery that my hands shake and my writing is almost illegible for about 3-4 hours following the dose. - If I take it, I am guaranteed that I will NOT sleep that night. Maybe 15 minutes total all night. Not even kidding. I would take it between 4-5 am - come night time, I close my eyes and they continue to dart around like I'm in an "awake" REM cycle, my mind races... insomnia is hell. - If I take it, I will have poor BP results - even a day later. I have a couple weeks' supply of them left, and I'd have to be REALLY desperate to take them, despite the weight I've gained following the fail of my band. On a related topic: My mom took the Phen-Fen (Fen-Phen?) concoction back in the late 80s and lost 123 lbs in 8 months - you couldn't nail her down, she was on such a speed-high during that time. However, about 10-12 years later, she was awarded part of the big lawsuit settlement after having an artificial heart valve placed as a result of the "non-phentermine" part of the drug. My personal opinion - I appreciated the drug years ago, but I'm no longer on the Adipex bandwagon.
  11. This is a topic I've been thinking about a lot myself lately. I'm almost a year out now and down 100lbs, I've just started to research plastics and their cost/the doctors I may be interested in. I currently have no significant other but do want kids at some point. when I find someone I dont want to jump right into baby making (thought the "practice" will be fun ;3 ) so I figure that I'm at least a min of 2 years out from having a baby. that will make it three years that I would get to live with the skin sack... :/ Are there any ladies here on the board that have had children post plastics willing to talk about their experience? did your body go back with the healthy eating and exercise or did you have a revision to your plastics?
  12. Thanks!! I've heard a lot about Premier Shakes. Do they sell them not in bulk so I can see which flavors I would like? Good luck with your revision surgery!

    New To This Forum

I'm having revision surgery on the 16th, but Protein shakes have been part of my life for years since lapband. The band surgeon recommended Premier Protein Shakes (found at Sam's club) - they're 160 calories, 30 grams protein, and of ALL of the shakes I've tried over the years, I like these the best. I was pleased to see my new sleeve/revision surgeon recommends them as well.

    Band to Bypass 2/5/15

I also had a band in 2010, and in 2011 had to have mine removed due to the same problems, but at the time I was too scared to have the revision to anything else, and just had the band removed. I am now 10 months post bypass surgery and I am down 105 lbs from 300 to 195 and I couldn't be happier. I wish in 2011 that I had gone forward with the revision instead of wasting 3 years of my life still being unhealthy, but I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and I just wasn't ready back then. I hope that you don't have any problems with having the revision and I wish you good luck you are making the best choice for you!!! Good luck!!!

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

@@Jlkhollins, My story is very much like yours. Banded in Dec 2008, the most I lost was 50 lbs, then gained it, then lost it, now gained it again. My band completely "broke" in September, 2014 - I realized I had lost all restriction when I gained 19 lbs in 10 days. I did OODLES of research, found a new doctor, and I've now been back through the insurance denial and appeal process, and learned last week they have approved my revision surgery, which is scheduled for Feb 16, 2015. I am so excited I am beside myself (!!!!!), but don't want to tell anyone about it.... I have carried such shame and embarrassment for the past six years around those who knew I had a LapBand because of my failure with it. Only five people know I'm having a revision (three of which are immediate family members), but thought this could be a great venue for me to shout it from the mountaintops! I give the band credit for keeping me from gaining weight (when it was working) - but it also created in me a "medical-device bulimic". With it no longer providing any restriction, I've gained 49 lbs (grrr), and my metabolism is shot. I have high hopes that my experience and failure will keep me focused and successful in my new, "last chance", journey. Wish me luck!!!!! @@CowgirlJane, I wanna be like you!
  16. I was banded in 2010 and lost 105lbs. However, I started having extreme heartburn and vomiting and weight loss fluctuation (180-220 etc) After years of attempting to find my "sweet spot" by adding and removing fluid... Several upper GIs and not being able to hold more than 1cc in my band the doctor and I have decided to do the revision. I am currently scheduled for surgery on 2/5/15 and for some strange reason as of yet, I am not afraid, but I am excited. I have been feeling sick for so long I can't wait to start to feel better. I mean, yes, there is a possibility that I can wake up with just my band gone and no other WLS done due to scar tissue (that's the only thing I worry about) but we won't know until they remove the band and see how much damage it has done. I can't wait to get my energy back and run and play with my babies (2 and 6) Hope all goes well.

    Aetna and Conversion

Hello, I was banded back in 2008 and now considering doing revision to gastric sleeve as well and I have Aetna. The requirements should be the same if you had Aetna for the lap band. I just finished doing my 3 month physician supervised diet, psych eval and nutrition eval. You can always go to Aetna.com to view the Clinical policy bulletin on obesity surgery(http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html) and it will give you all the requirements in detail. I would also contact Aetna customer service just to make sure that your plan does not require you to have this surgery done at an Institute of Quality for Bariatric. That is the problem I am currently running into. The facility I chose is not an IOQ and they denied me for that reason. So, I'm appealing to try to get approved. Hope that helps! Please keep me updated.

    Plastics on legs?

I had the upper part of me done (boobs, stomach, and arms) and I also had the groin incision only thigh lift. Recovery was very easy for that procedure outside of the lengthy bathroom routine for the first two weeks. My scars healed perfectly, but I have one leg that has a fat wrinkle which I don't love. I have a posterior lower body lift scheduled for March, so at that time ideally my doctor will be revising my inner thigh lift to fix my wrinkle and hopefully pull up a little more skin. I was not super crazy about my brachioplasty (I love it now that it's done with though) because of the visual nature of the scars, so I went for the lesser scars on the thigh lift, which doesn't produce as dramatic of a result with contouring, but does keep the scars hidden in the groin.
  19. I look at this thread and I reminded of all the people who post I lost __Fill in the blank___lbs Gone Forever! It used to make me so sad because I was one of the first people to join this board, revising from a band and I knew I had made the right decision. I lost weight right away because I got revised quickly when I started to have band problems. All of a sudden, between year 2 and 3, I could not lose the little gain I had over the weekend. I was good all week long, ate all Protein drank my Water and the scale did not budge. Pretty soon it was time for the next weekend, and I gained 2 more lbs. Then the holidays came around and I was completely depressed. I lost all my regain with the 5:2 plan rather easily. I didn't have a bf or husband, so I could plan all my meals the way I wanted. All that changed when I got another bf. Popcorn at the movies, him bringing home ice cream and donuts constantly etc and I am right back to where I was. I had back surgery in early Nov. and I have had complications from that, so I can't even exercise. I am determined though. It's either take off some weight or go and buy new clothes. I refuse to give all my really cute and stylish expensive clothes to a thrift shop. I just have to gather all my willpower and stop snacking in the evenings. I hate to say I'm glad other people are now gaining weight back, but i have to say it was so depressing to keep reading how everyone was getting full from 4 bites of food, and they have lost all desire for sweets. We can do this, and we don't have to do it alone!

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

My revision went great!! I have no pain, am up walking and feel some much better than after lap band. The hardest part was the IV. Eight sticks. Eight. Oye. I am glad to be on the other side !!!
  21. I voted yes, back in hospital. To clarify- 2006 Lap-Band 2006, slip before I left hospital and had to have 2nd surgery to replace band. Never felt OK from that day on, lots of pain and nausea. Lap band did not work for me. Jan 13 2015 Lap Band revision to sleeve. No problems so far. Some dehydration. Feel much better than lap band surgery. Recovery so far much easier. My opinion- lap band works for many but not all. And from what I understand there is no way to determine that before hand who the lap band will work for. (may be the same for all WLS) I have always had a sensitive stomach and the lap and just never felt right. The lap-band is gone for me now and that tightness and nausea in by belly is gone.
  22. BELLINGHAM, WA----just had a revision lap-band (2006) to sleeve on Jan 13 2015 at Northwest Weight Loss Dr Montgomery. He was amazing and so is the staff there. Many with WLS themselves. I also like and agree with his realistic pre-op and post-op food plans. Glad to find this thread for Washington folks. I have so much to learn. QUESTION: Does anyone know why EVERYTHING tastes so different now? Even water which I loved pre-surgery and now it's all I can do to get past the weird taste of water. And well everything else too Best wishes to you all and GO HAWKS!!!
  23. I revised from a failed band (had for 10 years) to a sleeve 3 years ago. It is pretty normal to gain a bunch of weight from IV fluids - so don't let that get you down. It is normal to stall a bit. The sleeve can work even if the band wasn't successful for you. I have lost about about half my former weight and maintaining for 2 years. I was never able to even move out of obese catagory with band. If you have specific questions...feel free to reach out, but just know the early days are about hydration and healing and working toward Protein goals... it gets easier, it gets better.

    Band to Sleeve in 2015
