    July 09 banders

Just wondering if there how much weight you've lost if you were banded in July. I've lost 30lbs. Just wondering how good that is compared to everyone else. Thanks!

    All or Nothing?

I am 8 months post op and at my goal weight. I make sure I get my protien in first before anything else. If I'm craving something sweet, I eat cocoa almonds. They are low carbs but tricks me into thinking I'm cheating lol. If i make sweets for my husband and kids i allow myself a nibble. A nibble is all I need. If i eat more than that i get a stomach ache. I try and make good choices but I also am human and make mistakes. I just get right back on track. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    FRUSTRATED!

Considering that your starting weight wasn't very high, I think you've done a phenomenal job! How tall are you? Are you exercising? Do you track your food intake... and how many calories are you eating a day?
  4. My surgery was on March 11, 2014. The sleeve was wonderful but during surgery my esophagus tore. I spent five days in the hospital with no water or food to drink strictly IV fluids. Tomorrow will be exactly one week after surgery and I have only lost 1 pound. Is this normal should I be losing more weight? I would have thought I would have lost more since I was not eating or drinking anything for five days. Can being on IV fluids and antibiotics around-the-clock call a stall at the beginning? Please enlighten me with your stories and advice I could really use the encouragement.......

    Exercising?

at that point I was only cleared for walking. right now you should just be focused on recovering from surgery. the weight loss will come and stalls are normal.

    New Goal for me...

Hubby and I always go to the company Christmas party, trust me Microsoft throws wonderful parties. With it being just two months away I have something to work toward. My dress last year was around a size 24, of course I just had my daughter 2 months before and had lost a bunch of weight due to morning sickness during my pregnancy. Weight that I quickly put back on after I stopped hurling every day. I had my second fill today and I am ready to kick butt at Curves, walk and look darn good this year in my purdy dress. Thanks for all the support you guys have given me. I am back on the saddle.

    Its muscle not fat right?

Hi! How are your clothes fitting? Better or Tighter? I can tell fairly quickly if I am up a few lbs. I am sure you have gained muscel how much is hard to tell. Did the Gym due a body fat % prior to your weight gain? that would give you some Idea. I am 9 months post op. Started at 300 now at 250. I have been working out 4 to 6 times a week with a trainer and meeting with a nutrionist once a week. She actually increased my calories etc. But my weight has been steady, ie up down within 4 /lbs for months now. We have been dicussing it and we agreed that I would cut my carbs down a bit. (35 - 40%) Also have been looking on this site alot and have gotten back to the POST OP way to eat, Protien first, etc. Also avoiding slider foods. Another thing i read is about a "Start Over Diet" Ie liquids for a day or so than introduce protiens and go from their. Their is information on line. You should not feel bad about going back to the Dr. they are thier to help you succed. So if you need a fill get one. I have been thinking of that too but realise that I have enough restriction. Hope this did not confuse you more, but working out is great! So even though your wt is up you are healther and have accomplishe a major weight loss. So be proud and keep up the fight.

    Newbie Here!

So I'm a newbie here and met with my surgeon for the first time today. I had orientation last week and was told that I immediately needed to start my preop diet and begin working out. I was really nervous at first but meeting with my doctor today really calmed those nerves. After failing at losing weight all my life I simply worry that I will fail at this too... I have to quit smoking which has proven to be not easy but this is important to me and I will make the commitment! I have my psychology appointment on the 31st and after that I simply have to hit my goal weight, get blood tests, and pass a nicotine urine test and then I am in the clear to see the case manager and schedule my surgery date. I must say that things will probably move much faster than I thought they would. I've seen so many people who have had to wait months but thank god I won't have to. (Btw I'm a Kaiser patient). I weighed in at 248.5 the day of my orientation (starting weight) and today at my appointment I weighed 241.5. So I have already lost 8 pounds in only a week of following the preop diet, pretty happy about that! My doctor set my goal weight at 238 so I only have 3.5 pounds to technically lose before I am given that go for surgery. My personal goal before surgery is at the very most 230. Any words of wisdom, encouragement, and guidance are always appreciated...! Thanks.
  9. It's a personal decision and yes, a scary one. It's natural to question if it's right to do so don't let that deter you. I only told 2 people of my surgery because I knew others would try to talk me out of it. I was scared a heck!! I flew to Mexico alone to get the surgery! Now that was frightening!! However I felt that my weight was robbing me of my happiness and not having the surgery was a scarier option. I'm 5 weeks post op and I know that it was the best thing I've done for myself. I feel free from the shackles of obesity!! I am happy! I feel good about myself. I am proud of myself! If you arent sure about surgery, talk to your doctor and do your research. Decide for yourself if it is right for you. If you honestly know that this is the right thing for you, don't let others opinions or your own fears stop you.

    Ohio some parts of Kentucky?

were you fefering to a weight loss dr or just a dr to refer you? this may sound wierd but try your Gynocologist. That is who refered me. Being over weight can cause major hormone problems. Or simply switch doctors. if you were refering to weight loss dr. try the Georgetown Baratric center in Georgetown Ky about a hour away from Cincinatti hope this helps

    Revision sleeve to bypass

I am getting a revision done this coming Wednesday. What happen was I had my sleeve done in nov 2013 and I did great! But I had very bad heartburn so I started taking nexium daily. In 2016 my surgeon did a hiatal hernia repair. That did not help so I just dealt with it and ended being put on dexilant medication for Gerd. So I had a upper GI and endoscopy and it showed regurgitation and acid reflux . So my doctor sent everything over to blue shield of California PPO. And it was authorized by them . My surgery was supposed to Take place April 8, 2020 but had to be rescheduled because of the coronavirus. So my new date is this coming Wednesday, June 24 and I got my clearance and I even had the Covid test last Thursday so I’ve been quarantine till Wednesday. I’ve also gained some weight in the last two years so this should help with my Gerd and weight gain. I’m very nervous but I’ll be so happy to be off the medication for the horrible heartburn.

    Revised On May 25Th

I am now down to 180, so I am at the desired weight I want to be at. Now, I just want to tighten things up. Originally, I was going to have the plication, but insurance did not cover it, so instead BCBS of Mass covered the bypass.

    Its muscle not fat right?

It’s snowing heavily outside so I’m spending some time on lap band talk, yep even the men’s room  and came across your post I was in a similar position I dropped 130 lbs in 13 months and was my surgeon’s star lap band patient Basically I allowed myself to become too restricted, which played havoc with my stomach and overall health. I need a complete unfill . I wasn’t able to get another fill for about 8 weeks and it took me months to build up to a sweet spot again. I regained 40 lbs. Keep working out, make better food choices but get back to your doctor asap. Without the proper restriction it’s too easy to fall into old habits. I had been lauded as one of my surgeon’s first patients w/ a large amount of weight to lose who was having success w/ the lap band ( that office is very pro- bypass) so it definitely hurt my pride to show a gain. It was helpful to just be honest. “Dr., I’ve increased my activity level ( jogging and aerobics) trying to combat the gain but I am still able to eat too much and have been making poor food choices.” With the right fill and upping my activity level even more and falling back into good bandster habits I was able to take off the 40 lbs in about 6 months. I was actually in a smaller size at the same weight this time down b/c I was working out so much more instead of primarily counting on restriction and a little walking to help me lose. Take action !!
  14. I was very dependent on Advil before the surgery so I literally feel your pain. I'm doing hot and cold packs along with Tylenol. My hope is that with further weight loss, my back pain will decrease and I won't miss the Advil so much. I'm interested in hearing how others have dealt with this issue.

    exercise!

Great topic! I have been trying to do as much strength training as I can. I really enjoy the Planet Fitness 30 minute express circuit. It keeps my heart rate up the whole time, and I love seeing myself do more reps & add more weights as my strength improves. In between each of the 10 lifting stations are stepping stations, and I do six different step routines, including arms, which I vary after each lifting station. Then I add some ab stuff when I'm done, then I do some stretching. My goal is to try to create muscles so the saggy skin on my upper arms, belly and upper thighs won't look so goofy! Plus, in this early phase we are losing some muscle mass since the weight is coming off so quickly. I want to maintain my muscle, baby. Who wouldn't want Michelle Obama's arms!? (not a Michelle fan, just an arm fan!) Oh, and welcome to your first of many plateaus! I don't let myself get on the scale every day for that very reason. We know we're doing all the right things, and our body will reward us in time!
  16. Dieting and weight loss slow metabolism, that is why diet and exercise for long term weight loss only works for 5% of people. Your metabolism probably has taken a hit over the years as you have tried dieting. For detailed info Google "Biggest Loser Study". The study was published in 2016 and the results have been repeated in other studies. Subsequent studies found that while diet and exercise PERMANENTLY lowers your metabolism, gastric bypass does NOT. One year after gastric bypass the body's metabolism is back to normal. Sleeve works too, but the biggest research trials have been with bypass patients. You may find that surgery will reset your metabolism completely.
  17. Hello, I was plicated on July 11, 2013. The good news is, from pre-op liquid diet to the 4 week mark which is tomorrow, or a total of 5 weeks, I have lost 30 lbs! I have gone from 241 to 212. I never thought it was possible to lose 30 lbs, let alone the other 40 I need to go! The bad news is recovery was really tough. I can say the first month was hard. The first week I was not really coherent, just really dehydrated and unable to eat and barely drink, I had to get fluids twice. I have 2 small children so I had to send them to relatives houses for a few days, and when the baby came back (he's 11 months) I still wasn't ready for him so my husband cared for him mostly - my husband had to take a week and a half off work, and my mother in law babysat me and the kids the following week. I felt my stomach was too tight, but it was just really swollen. The swelling has gone down and now I can eat about half of a salad plate of food (mushies) and soft meat. I'm so relieved, since the beginning was so tough. The other bad news is I've had some issues - I have thrown up multiple times, at the beginning and when I eat too much, and I have had dumping syndrome 3 times which was awful. However I'm turning around, feeling normal, and lots of restriction which freaked me out at first but not I'm enjoying as when I'm full I don't want to eat more, and I don't feel deprived! I'm supposedly on a regular diet starting tomorrow but I don't think i'm ready for salads or tough meat at all since I've had so many gastrointestinal issues, I'm going to go super slow. The 30 lbs is great!!!!! For anyone considering this surgery it's not a walk in the park, and it's not an easy fix. yes you lose weight at the beginning easily but now the weight loss is slowing down and I have to work at it (eating protein and veggies and fruit and exercising). So don't do it unless you're willing to make big changes! xoxo

    Fluids and protein.

@@kcap68 Getting enough fluids and protein is a full time job. You need both for proper healing and weight loss. At 3 weeks out - you may still need to supplement with protein powder or shakes. Even if you aren't hungry - you need to eat on schedule. Set a timer if necessary. Eat 4-6 small meals of protein and drink shakes or other fluids 30-60 mins after. Your body will start breaking down muscle if you don't get adequate protein. Try drinking smaller sips if you get uncomfortable. I did better with warm or hot liquids at first.

What did your pre-op diet consist of?

I am currently on my pre-op diet, which consists of five Protein Shakes per day which are specially formulated for the surgery, as well as a small amount of Protein per day and up to 400 to 500 G of select vegetables, no oils. My pre-op diet is for the entire month before the surgery although I hear some people do not have to have any kind of diet whatsoever in comparison. My current weight is somewhere around 420 lb so that may have something to do with it? It also could be that here in Finland they just require a very long pre-op diet, I am not sure. im a newbie

olah! My name is Lindsey, i am 27, and i live in Savannah, Georgia. i saw someone mention this community on livejournal so i thought i would come see what its all about. i was banded on Feb 6th of this year, so that makes me almost exactly 6 months post-op. My surgery was performed by an awesome doctor named Oliver Whipple here in Savannah. he installed a 4cc lapband and i have had 3 fills so far, bringing my total to 3cc's. i have lost 53 pounds so far! starting weight: 310 current weight: 257 goal: 150 i stupidly did not take any full body pictures to use as "before" shots - this was taken a few days after the surgery, so i had already lost about 20 pounds (from the pre-op liquid diet) i dont have a current full body shot but this was taken 2 days ago. my hair shrunk too!

    Spouse Motivation

It's much easier to stick to the weight loss journey after our surgeries. He hasn't had the surgery and finds it hard to stick to a weight loss program. Unfortunately he won't lose the weight until he wants and is committed or has surgery himself. The reality is it's his issue not yours. Take it from a 51 year old women! Take care of yourself and if he wants to join he will and if not you will move on. Do not sabotage your life and health for a partner, parent, sibling, friend...anyone.
  22. I'm banded since Summer 2008 and am down 62 pounds. I have had 3 fills and 1 unfill. No problems and no re-gain. I can truly say my only regret is that the surgery was not available 30 years ago. I'm not quite at goal (20 pounds to go), but having experienced no problems I am more than willing to let it take as long as it takes. Because I will lose that 20 pounds. I am very confident of that. The way I think about food has changed: the way I eat - very slowly ...what I eat - less garbage (although I could eat garbage if I wanted too...I just don't really want to)...where I eat - at a table not standing in the kitchen or sitting on the couch...how much I eat - amazingly so much less that what I used too and enough to be just fine with that. I was a very slow to lose the weight and was somewhat disgruntled, but now, I would not change a thing. I feel great and I like how I look. If you have health insurance that does not specifically exclude bariatric surgery, I would say to you please think about finding a "Center of Excellence" doctor's group. They coordinate everything for you, make sure you get all the tests, and will really go to bat with your insurance company. You meet with a doctor and together you decide how to proceed, The value of this surgery is becoming more evident everyday, you just may qualify. GOOD LUCK!

Two goals hit on my 6 month bandiversary

Thats great I would love to be under 200 by christmas I have 15#'s to go. Maybe I'll reach that goal I was banded 8-11-08 I love the band so far. Also one question how do yall make yalls posts so unique with all the little cartoon animation? How much weight loss do you normally loose in a month or is it just based on the individual and their fill?

    Well done to chrisredjeep!

Well done Soo and Chris. Long may your weight loss and friendship continue. x
  25. You sound like you're so near your sweet spot. I was amazed that i was hard headed for a month, went on liquids, etc, then after a few days of liquids....the first bite of real food came back up. It wasn't an "annoyed band". It was simply that i needed 1/4 of a cc taken out. I'm back to normal eating, no puking and might...MIGHT just be at the right spot. If you're following your "user manual" and eating properly, and it doesn't stay down.....get an EVER SO SLIGHT unfill. Don't be hard headed like me and think that i can play around with making it work.....i lost a whole month of losing weight because i didn't want an "unfill". Blamed it on stress, user error, whatever....i blamed it on everything except needing an unfill. Unfill was yesterday....today has been GLORIOUS....i'm eating like i should be eating. Don't wait...don't play around with mind games with yourself....if you're following all your MD's rules and it doesn't stay down.....get some out !! I think he took out 1/4 cc and it made all the difference in the world. It takes some "tweaking" to get to the sweet spot when you're real close to begin with. Listen to your body, follow the eating rules......get it unfilled if you need it.
