    Modified Duodenal Switch

@RLeaT Wow! Your experience is very similar to mine! I had the SADI-S on 4/29/21 so I'm just now out of my first month post-op and it has only been in the past few days that I've started to feel more like myself. I think it was around week 2 ish that I started regretting my decision because of the nausea (better now), constipation (still experiencing that), couldn't get in enough fluids/protein daily (still working on that & even struggling to get in enough calories/day), and that feeling of gas/needing to burp but can't plus just various other reasons. I also can relate to not being able to tolerate the Protein Shakes I bought and also having a gross taste in my mouth that seemed to linger! But now I'm back to feeling glad I did and also realizing it takes time for my body to get used to it. I lost 17 lbs in my first 2 weeks post-op so that was encouraging but now my weight has been stalled for the past week ish. I'm just hoping getting in the Protein, fluids, & calories on a daily basis will become easier and easier and I'll start getting some energy back. So it's encouraging to read your experience and know I'm not alone and also that things have been much better for you lately. Hope all is well. Take care!

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: 12 days post op and yesterday was NOT a good day. We were invited over to friends/neighbors for a BBQ and while the rest of my family went, I declined. Just wasn't ready to be around all the food and drinking (plus I can't always get comfortable sitting on the sofa let alone a camp chair). If perhaps I was out of this stupid liquid stage and into the puree or soft foods phase I would have. At least then I could have found SOMETHING to eat and participate in. Who knows. But after everyone was over there for several hours having a good time, I had myself a good cry and pitty party and asked my husband when he was coming home. He asked if I was ok and needed something I told him no. That I was just feeling bored and left out. He came home right away. I felt bad but he didn't mind, he said, cause he had already been there like 6 hours. Anyway, it was a bad day. He was asking why I was crying and upset and I just said I didn't know. I guess it was just the feeling left out that got to me and feeling hungry and not being satisfied any longer with these stupid freakin' limited liquids!! I've had enough of it!! Just can't wait to move on to the next food phase! My second issue is sleep. Still can't sleep on my sides and sitting up/semi up has my back jacked up now. And now I keep getting that tugging/burning feeling BELOW my belly button. A place that hadn't bothered me previously and a spot, to my knowledge, they didn't even touch. And lastly, I'm already wigging out that this isn't working/gonna work for me. I am only down like 7lbs since surgery and feel like I should have lost more. I know everyone is different. And I know people say it's early but, I DO NOT feel like I am dealing with that gas issue any longer and haven't since day 4/5, roughly. I can see it in my legs that I am not bloated and feel back to normal but for this burning/tugging stomach crap. So, considering I have been doing low/no carb/no sugar since March 1st and having the surgery May 19th, I would have expected to lose more than I have so far. I guess I'm just worried I'm going through all this for nothing and I won't lose as per usual. I mean, you would think if a body only had liquids for nourishment for almost 4 feakin weeks (and only roughly 400 calories a day) that the body would most definitely be losing weight. Of course, not me. SMH I can hear Dr. Now, now...."At your weight, in a mont, you should have lost turdy pounds by now". LOL I seriously hope I'm wrong and things move soon. I don't feel like this is that stall everyone talks about because I haven't really even begun the dang losing phase yet let alone be in a stall. Anyway, rant over.
  3. No regrets at all, but believe it or not there are downsides, or more accurately unanticipated adjustments that may be needed. It's been 10.5 months since my surgery, and in no particular order: Temperature sensitivity. I always used to run hot, which made summers uncomfortable but was great in the fall and winter months. I had enough internal insulation that I frequently didn't need to wear a winter coat even down in to the 20s. Now it's the exact opposite; I always feel cold. In moderate temperatures (50s-60s) I feel chilly. By the same token, I can now go outside for exercise in 90 degree weather and I feel fine. It's just completely different parameters when it comes to temperature. Bones. Everything was padded before. Now with bones/edges, it can be a bit uncomfortable sleeping/lying on my side or stomach, as pressure/weight is now on bone rather than fat which cushioned everything. Lack of muscle. For my entire adult life I could leverage my bulk when it came to moving or picking up things; inertia vs. using muscle. Moving furniture and heavy/bulky objects is much more difficult now. I really need to work on building/rebuilding actual muscle. I can't just put my hip into something anymore... they push back! Knowing what I know now, would I change my mind? Absolutely not. The benefits still outweigh (no pun intended) the downsides, just be aware that there may be life changes you didn't anticipate.
  4. I wanted to write about this because I think no one talks about the some of the bad parts of surgery. It’s important before you make a decision in my eyes. I had gastric bypass 8 years ago and lost about 100 pounds. I was NOT ready. We paid out of pocket and I did not have to do much in the way of prep. My choice was purely because I hated my body, was ashamed of who I was, and wanted to change myself completely. My mental health was NOT in a good place. The surgery did not fix that (obviously). At my highest, I gained 70 lbs back. I am going to get the surgery again and I have lost 25 lbs on my own to prep. I would not so it again if I hadn’t done extensive mental health work for the last 5 years and already had it done once. Here is kind of why. First is obviously the mental health issue. It is more than just thinking you’re prepared, it’s a self love thing too. Working through the trauma, the shame, and societies BS that has been forced on you. Owning why you eat as well as understanding a lot of food is made to make us gain weight. The nutrition, the addiction, and building a relationship with your body. It’s hard work, but I know I deserve it now. The big thing is when I make a mistake, I can get back on track. That changes everything. I’m doing this for me this time. Honestly, I would probably not get this surgery again if I hadn’t already done so. I wish I’d gotten the band or sleeve. The gastric bypass has caused some health issues for me and a lot of pain. For a while I had abrupt sharp stomach pain that sent me to the hospital a couple times. Never found out what it was, and it stopped a few years in. Gallbladder became diseased and I had surgery for that. It was painful but a risk that often happens. One thing I wasn’t ready for was how much my body became different. I became sensitive to a lot of foods and developed some allergies which may or may not be because of the surgery. I also had constant stomach pain until about two years ago. This was largely based on my return to poor eating habits but some of it seemed to be in a change in my gut balance and developing food aversions/allergies. I cannot eat certain things (not always due to being “unhealthy”). I had some stomach issues prior so that could have contributed. One thing that may be weird that went with this constant pain, and did cause me a lot of regret as I started becoming in tune with my body, was the actual surgery and internal changes themselves. I sometimes struggled with this thought that I mutilated my body. I would think about the staples in my body and changes that were made and when paired with the pain I always felt I would feel a great deal of anxiety. Now, this has subsided greatly as I learned my food aversions and ate less unhealthy foods. However, I do have some trepidation as I go forward with the re-do that the pain was not just because of my eating but creating imbalance in my body. Overall, if you are ready I don’t think the surgery is a bad choice at all. I am not trying to scare anyone, or be negative. These are the thoughts I went through before deciding to go forward with it again. Overall, if you are ready I don’t think there is much to regret. Most of what I’m talking about is not being ready and being stuck deep in my food addiction. Furthermore, I have had a severe food addiction that I think might surpass some surgery recipients. If you are ready there will likely be few, if any, regrets. Things like not enjoying a huge meal, not eating what you used to, and changes in meals I think can be real regrets for some but not huge.

    Big belly

there probably isn't much fat there - it's probably mostly/all excess skin. I had a lot of rolls when I had a DEXA scan done at 146 lbs. I thought it was all fat - and I wanted to see how much more weight I should lose (thus, i had the scan). Turns out I only had 22% body fat, which is pretty lean for a woman. That "fat" was just skin. I hate to say it, but plastic surgery is the only want to get rid of it.

    I'm losing my hair!!

Your natural hair loss cycle accelerates due to the shock of the surgery & reduced calorie intake - excess stress on your body. I also think the oestrogen flush we have as we’re losing weight probably adds to it like the hair loss it causes in a lot of pregnant women or after childbirth. This is hair you would have usually shed over a longer period of time concentrated in a short time frame. But just like new hair grows when we shed at our usual rate, new hair is growing in while we lose at the accelerated rate. It’s just the new hair is growing at it’s usual rate so it’s going to take time to catch up. There’s nothing you can really do to stop it or slow it down. The hair you’re losing is already dead & ‘scheduled’ to fall out & be replaced. All the supplements can do is maybe make your new growth stronger. I just cut my almost waist length hair to shoulder length so the new growth wouldn’t take as long to catch up to the hair I had.

    Feeling full

You could possibly reduce your protein since you’re in maintenance & it’s very filling & up your vegetable intake. Daily requirement in the US is 0.8g protein per kilo you weigh so you could reduce your intake to about 50g. But check with your surgeon & dietician first. (My dietician said I needed a little more because of my age so I work at 1-1.2g protein per kilo of weight.) I can eat more now than I did at 6 months & more than I did at 12 months. To get my calories in to maintain (about 1200+/-) I feel like I eat all day long. I snack about 4 times a day on dairy, fruit & multi/whole grains in addition to my three meals. I also still take ages to eat: 30-40+ mins for breakfast & dinner & about an hour for lunch but it does enable me to eat a little more. Are you still leaving time between when you eat & drink? Have you tried plant based proteins? I believe they can be easier to digest & may not upset you or fill you as much. I really think you need to have a conversation with your surgeon & then your dietician because you’ve been struggling so much.

    Hashimoto's

Hashi’s is auto-immune based, so it is extremely common to have dosages lowered if you’re not having a flare up. Restricted calories and weight loss will reduce inflammation which can cause thyroid resistance. I’ve seen a few studies done where longer term restricted calories can actually improve thyroid function, so it does make sense.
  9. Hello, I had my surgery on 12/8/2020. I am 67 years old, 5"6. I was unable to walk due to a broken ankle and surgery to reconstruct it in May 2020. I also have thyroid disease and osteoarthritis in both knees. So having a gastric sleeve was my last resort. I began to gain weight at 40 and became diabetic at 45. My highest weight was 310lbs. My surgery was without complications. But I am not losing weight as I thought I would. There was no support from my surgeon after the sleeve. I was just on my own. So I decided to get counselling for my eating disorder and depression. This is a slow process. I am hoping for the best. I am thankful for this site as I know I am not alone. SW 289 GW 160 CW 257 I have been stuck here since March. I know I have eating habits that must change. But I love to snack on salty and crunchy . I do not eat sugar, rice, bread, or most carbs. Most days I only eat two meals. I begin with protein. I do drink a protein shake for breakfast. My diabetes is in remission. I am now walking without support. I go to physical Therapy for my knees and ankle twice a week and also have water therapy. That is my exercise. I just wish my weight loss would get going. Finally in Onederland!! 🎉

Sounds like your weight loss is going fantastic. I would guess your "stall" is related to getting more fit. Getting more toned adds muscle weight in the short term but helps increase your metabolism. Keep up the good work!!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Can I change my surgery?

I had the sleeve as well, and also had hiatal hernia repair. I’m 21 months post op. I’m maintaining at below my initial goal weight. I have occasional (once a month, if that) heartburn easily treated with a Tums. You’ll successful people who had either surgery. Work with your team to determine which will be best for you.

  13. This is an interesting thread. When I first had surgery, I didn't feel I deserved to have a healthy and slim body, I just wanted to feel a bit better. Now much of my excess weight has come off, I am so sad for the pre surgery me, who was so low and underconfident she couldn't even dream of being a healthy weight. Funny how things change. I have been feeling a bit fed up with my dietician saying it's not likely I'll hit my own personal goal (which would be a BMI in the region of 22-23). I hit 29 with little effort (beyond surgery, not eating much, and the challenges that come with a tiny stomach of course!) and am now enjoying exercising in a variety of ways. I am 9 months out, and while I appreciate weight loss will (and has) slow down, I didn't go through all of this to remain at an unhealthy weight! I may not get to my ultimate goal, but I'm certainly not going to give up before I've tried. We have gone through a lot to get to where we are now, and we deserve to succeed. So I say go for it - set your goal and work towards it. Set smaller goals on the way (the first 25, the next hundred bracket, lower than 5 years ago, that sort of thing) and celebrate each win. As you get closer to goal, you can always revise it if it doesn't feel right.

    Can I change my surgery?

I had a revision on 4.20 and initially I was going to have a sleeve revision - I changed my mind to bypass and glad I did! I had severe GERD and a hernia and I have never felt better...am also losing the excess weight I gained back.

    May Surgeries - check in!

How did eating once a day cause you to gain? That’s what I do now and I did gain so really just curious.

    I'm losing my hair!!

Great job on the weight loss! Try Viviscal Professional and PRP Injections. A bit pricey but worth it! And the hair loss is not permanent…it will stop and grow back!

    May Surgeries - check in!

I had the sleeve 5 years ago lost 125 lbs gained 35 back because I went back to old habit of 1 meal a day. just had the bypass on 5/10 and have currently lost almost 15lbs! It’s a different feeling I have before I could feel myself getting full now I can’t but then my stomach will start to hurt and gets hard so I know I’m full no bad habits coming back this time!
  20. Aloha, Not trying to hijack your question, but I also am struggling with this question. My pre-surgery meeting with my surgeon is 6/22 where I expect we'll discuss this, with surgery (DS) on 7/12. I'm heavier than most on this board with a CW of 411 at 5 foot 6 inches, aged 42 years. At first I thought, 200 is a weight that I can live with as I can travel, sit in single plane seats/bus seats and zipline and skydive and bungee jump and ride in rollercoasters, etc. etc. But as the weeks tick by, I don't want a weight that I can simply "live with". If I'm going to alter my body so significantly, I'd like to thrive! I'd like to get out of "obese" and "overweight" BMI's. The lightest I've weighed as an adult is 185 pounds and that was when I was 19 years old. Even though it sounds absolutely nutter, I'm gonna tell my surgeon I'd like to weigh 154 so I'm officially in a "normal" BMI. He may laugh or scoff, but hey, it's a goal. A 257 pound loss may be impossible, but I'm ready to shoot for the stars after imprisoning myself for so long.

    First Stall and Carb questions

you're just in a stall. I had several along the way - especially during year 2. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days. At 1000 kcal/day, you should still be losing weight. Protein and carbs are fine - I was not on an ultra-low carb plan, and I lost over 200 lbs. (P.S. some plans ARE ultra-low-carb, but others are not. We didn't have a carb limit at all. I usually had around 80 a day)
  22. My goal was to reach 135 and now I am at 131 at 9 months out. I don't like the way I look or feel at this weight. I wish I would have stopped losing around the 140-145 mark. That is when I felt better about the way I looked. Now I am trying to stop losing and just maintain and having a very hard time with it. I believe you will know what you feel comfortable with at the time.

I was on Trazadone before the WLS and it made me gain a lot of weight. You could be experiencing anxiety? Check with your doc. There are lots of meds for it that don't make you gain weight.

    First Stall and Carb questions

Hello everyone has stalls at different times of their weight loss journey. It is completely normal. I have had several. Some have lasted a week, and others have lasted 3-4 weeks at a time. It is very discouraging but if you stay on track, you will keep losing. Your carbs and calories seem very high to me. I am 9 months out and my carbs don't go over 20, protein is 90-100, and calories is around 800 at the most per day. I know we are all different, and on different eating plans. I am not a doctor, but my advice would be to try to increase your protein, eat less carbs and calories and watch what happens. Good Luck
  25. I have been doing great since my surgery on New Years Eve. I was losing weight well and only weigh myself once a week. I never had a stall and that is probably because I had covid and it hit my whole gastro system so I lost weight there too. I was still losing weight well this last week. I have lost nothing. I was like well here is my first stall and now I am still the same weight. I have added a frozen yogurt Yasso at night after dinner because it has been hot and I have not added a snack to my diet yet. I am wondering if my weight stall is normal at 5 months or if it is because I added something new to my diet that I should not be having. I never let my carbs for the day go over 50 and my protein is between 60 to 80. My calories are never over 1000 either. If I have higher carbs for the day I do not have the yogurt bar. Do you think this is normal? Should I put protein shakes back into my diet? Should I do my snack earlier in the day?
