    10/11 Sleever

Hi - I am a 10/11/12 sleever too! Just got back from Mexico last night. So far, so good. Keeping a close watch on drain hole opening. Everything went okay for me although it was more traumatic (drastic) than I thought it would be. Went through a short period of "what have I done"..... but got over that pretty quick. Now back at home I'm seeing the possibilities of how I can add variety to my next month's diet. Still puffy on stomach, sore around major incisions. Like others, I am having a hard time seeing me looking right after weight loss - feel like I will have tons of sagging, loose skin, especially around my upper thighs. They look so bad now that I just foresee them looking really bad later. BUT, I don't plan to be showing my upper thighs to people. If they fit in smaller pants I'll be happy! Let's post progress reports so we can use each other as gauges to assess our progressions!

    Failed bandster planning for sleeve

Ok, if you have been reading here long you know my story. I had lots of issues over the 10 years I had the band including what you describe. In addition, I was pretty much hungry all the time too. The sleeve has been a much more effective tool for me. Look at my profile for details but I lost over half my starting weight...the sleeve has saved me. One clear long term issue is risk of acid/reflux/GERD issues with the sleeve. Research indicates that about 3 to 6years post op alot of people develop a problem. I debated nearly a year whether I was willing to accept that risk....of basically needing to be on meds for it forever. I simply cannot believe there is no long term consequences of having most of your stomach removed -I take this very seriously. There is no going back once it is done. It scares me a little of so many very young or low BMI people getting sleeved....this is a big deal. However, I had 100percent chance of early disability and death as a300 pounder with comorbidities. I needed to do something to save my life. The sleeve has helped me accomplish the unthinkable...normal body weight and a fit and active life. Best thing I could have done. No regrets and so far no acid! I am a sleeve evangelist!

    Failed bandster planning for sleeve

Well it's official My new surgeon and 2nd opinion confirmed my am suffering from lapband intolerance and confirmed band was not salvageable and needed to Come out ASAP! He was appalled that I had 8 incisions when his practice is only 3. On feb 19 2014 my band was removed. I'm back at 213.. And don't see signs of this stoping. As I suffer with PCOS, metabolic disease, and throughout the 1st yr I had severe increase in migraines and began to have seizures. I feel like a complete failure.. I can't even lose weight with MAJOR SURGERY!!! Now I'm her with 12 incisions and no resolution! Body dismorphia has set in! I am sooooo miserable! And even more in debt than before! My 1st surgeon had his office send a request to convert to sleeve but I was denied instantly! Turns out my 1st surgeon made no real mention of my "lapband intolerance" Thus the reason for me leaving his office for good! I was never told about this intolerance issue would ever be a possibility! He said I was the 1st to have it removed from his office! Big lie! I did research I'm #25 in the year 2013 alone! I am appealing the decision with my New surgeon who agreed the band could not be salvaged! Now what!? Height 5'1 31 years old 12/7/12 224 starting weight surgery day 12/7/13 205 Day of LAPBAND REMOVAL surgery 2/19/14 Weight 207 Today 3/2/14 213

    PLEASE HELP!

I get over 70 grams of protein a day. I drink a premier Protein shake faithfully every morning. At 10 I eat a protien bar. Those 2 alone are 45 grams. lunch is either tuna or chicken or a low calorie Soup and supper is ALWAYS chicken breast which is 30 more grams. What is the average calorie intake I need at 13 months out. I never have been above a thousand Sent from my SM-S820L using the BariatricPal App

    A beautiful day in Chicago

I grew up in the suburbs but moved out to Rogers Park for college. And I've stayed there ever since (almost 10 years now, but I'm thinking of moving closer downtown in the next year or two). Yes, I love the city, especially the early fall non-humid weather! I'm hoping to be sleeved around early January/February, and I'm so excited! I used to run a lot as a teenager so I'm excited to get to a point where I could do that without grinding my knees to powder, haha. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hair loss 1 year out

I don't think anyone is telling you NOT to listen to your surgeon. I'm 10 months out and at goal weight. I think medically it is important to listen to your surgeon and Nut but most of us that have lost a lot of weight know that our surgeons tell us what we want to hear when it comes to hair loss. I started with a thick head of hair, got all my Protein in, took all my Vitamins and still lost about half my hair. Our doctors MUST know that no matter what we do, hair loss is part of the process for most. I think maybe your upset is coming more from the fear of the possibility of losing your hair. Unfortunately, no matter what you do, you will probably lose some. I was devastated at the amount of hair that came out of my head daily. Seriously like someone who was going through chemo. Fortunately I had enough hair that it never seemed to be noticeable to anyone but me. The good news is, that the loss stopped at about 9 months and I have little sprouts of new growth coming out everywhere. My dermatologist (who really is more knowledgeable about skin, nails, hair than my surgeon) told me that no amount of protein would have stopped the hair loss. His feeling is that mine has stopped falling out and started regrowing because my drastic weight loss has slowed. Best of luck to all Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. Hi Leigh, Mia I was banded in September in the UK (I live in Ireland). I had 4 stone to lose. By two weeks after the op I had lost 12 lbs about and was delighted. Then my appetite returned and I lost only 2 lbs more roughly between then and Xmas despite 3 fills (involving 3 treks to the UK). I must say I was beginning to lose hope until I had my 4th fill last week. Now suddenly I have serious restriction, almost too much in fact. Im back on Protein Shakes and have lost 4-5 lbs since last week. Im in no hurry to get a defill in order to get back on solids when the weight is coming off so nicely. Now in fairness I am exercising daily as well but am very happy to finally have restriction. (Im at 8.7 in a 10 ml band). My doctor was willing to give me an additional fill every 2 weeks until I got good restriction. The limitation was on my side due to the effort involved in going over and back to England. I would recommend to keep going back for the fills until you are in no doubt that you have restriction. Wishing you both the very best. Ellen

    Help With Pre Op Diet

I am also doing the pre op diet. My surgery is 7/10. If I need flavor to my chicken I just squirt a little bit of lemon on it and some pepper. It works. I can't stand plain, dry chicken

    Anyone on here in Kansas?

I wish you had met me because i had been sleeved on December 26!!! I go on January 10.....so excited and ready. How are you doing so far?
  13. While I'm a bargain shopper, I have a lot of really nice clothes, maybe not top designers, but from places like Macy's, Dillards, Kohls, Belk, Torrid, Venus, etc. Most are current and all are in excellent condition bc I've always taken great care of my clothes, hung everything to dry and such. I also know that to buy them again would be something I could NOT afford. I've realized I will have to do much less volume and be more creative about pairings and figuring out what flatters. I'm fortunate that I'm tall-ish (5'9") so a lot of my dresses and my cardigans can be worn for a long time before they're falling off I think. I wouldn't mind donating things but I'm also practical in my realization that much of this was bought when I was working and now that I'm retired, I don't have the disposable income I once had. I'm 56 so I've got a few years before I'm sitting on the sofa in sweatpants but not sure how to sell what I have and get back a little cash to re-buy some new duds. That idea sounds cool with reusing the fabrics but I don't see it being a viable day-to-day business bc it probably wouldn't be practical and while I can't speak for everyone, most of the things I've bought as my fat self were never sentimental or something I'd want to save, I can't wait to be in a size 8 or 10 and hope to never have to buy another piece of clothing with an X in the size! I want to shop at cute places in the non-plus section for Chico's, Boston Proper and Venus and have someone tell me how thin I am Vain I know but a girl's gotta dream p What part of Tn you in? I'm in Crossville, AL, about 45 min from TN/GA/AL junctions on I-59, just south of Ft. Payne myself. aL

    A Beef about my Surgeon

Unfortunately, I think this is more common than not. And unfortunately seems to be the case for many different types of surgeons. They hire PA's to handle the follow-ups so they are freed up to do more surgeries. I don't like it either and has been the reason I have changed surgeons (not bariatric) more than once. I really like my surgeon but she is in a small office and still I have only seen her twice since surgery 10 months ago and that was because I had a complication early on. Just wanted you to know you are not alone... Unfortunately, I think this is more common than not. And unfortunately seems to be the case for many different types of surgeons. Laptop, Ipad, Iphone?

I have an iphone and travel quite a bit to Mexico. I simply disable the data portion and then just use the wifi. If you have an iphone it is pretty easy to do that. That way you will not incur expensive data roaming fees. You only get charged for voice if you answer the phone or check your voicemail. I simply do not do either unless it is an important call. Then it is not to expensive. If you call AT&T before you leave they can tell you but I think it is like 10 or 20 cents per minute. You can disable your voice service as well and essentially turn an iphone into an ipod touch which will only use wifi while you are down there. It certainly works at hospitals in MX that I have been to, mostly those in Cancun/tourist areas.
  16. I was sleeved on 2/19 and also can't exercise like I wanted but due extensive neurosurgery. I also have lost 60lbs. However, my nut told to get a lifecycle which can be used for the arms and legs and is a real workout. She explained that while most people will slow down after 3 months, I will start and consistently lose more weight in month 4-6. My wife bought a recumbent bike and a Pilates machine for me with the approval of my neurosurgeon and as an early 25th anniversary present. Good luck to you. Sent from my iPad using VST

  18. Take away 1 shake and add more veggies. Drink water water water and do HITT cardio 3 out of the 5 days. If you don't have a gym membership then walk for 3 min and run as fast as you can for 10 seconds. Do this in intervals for 30 min. Do this for 1 week and I bet the scale moves [emoji6] Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. Hi All, My name is Samantha, I am a 34 years old and I live in NYC. I was recently banded, 9/19, and I am looking for somebody, or somebodies who could help me through this process. Living in NYC, like many places in the world make this process even more difficult because a lot of delicious food is easily available. Personally I am looking for somebody who I can go to when I feel like I'm going to make a bad decision, who can also give me advice for to things to do socially with others where food is not the starring player. Like many who live in NYC, most of my social activities have always revolved around food. At the moment, since I'm still on the pre-op diet, I have not be engaging in social actvities due to lack of energy level and swolleness. But once I'm healed and am able to go out again, I want to be able to socialize and spend time with my friends, but need to find ways of doing that, where food is not the means that gets everybody together. In an ideal universe, I would like to be able to find a buddy/mentor or buddies/mentors that grow into friendships so that I can have more people in my life who are able to personally understand when I have going through and what I continue to go through. If this sounds like something that you might be interested in, please respond or message me, sorry I'm still learning how this website works, and I will give you my email address.

what to tell people at work

I actually told almost everyone at work (about 10) individually that I was having the surgery. This was after I had a date set and was getting ready to be off. They were all thinking I was preggo because of all of my "dr appointments". LOL. So, I handled each peron directly so that if they had any questions they new I was there to answer them. Also, if I told everyone myself, I didnt have to worry about others telling. I know that this kind of thing just gets out so I started it myself. ONe funny thing: The monday after I came back to work there was a huge article agains bypass surgery on the front page of the newspaper :w00t: so, everyone was like, did you read? But, everyone is very supportive and it is nice to have people constantly telling me I am doing good

    Clothing expenses after surgery

I'm 10 months out, and started in a 26 pants and a 2 or 3x on top. I'm now in a 10 top and 14 pants - normal people clothes! So, you can see how many sizes I went through. I wore everything as long as I could, and probably beyond what I should have I skipped buying some sizes, and I only had enough to get me through. So, I would have one pair of jeans, and 5 pairs of pants for work, with a few more options for tops. I gave up on suits for a while. None of my shoes fit either, so I've gradually been replacing them. I searched at the good will and salvation army, and it ended up being just too much effort for too little yield. I don't have a lot of time for shopping, so I abandoned that effort. I have been very successful in department stores sales racks. In the spring I got pants for $10 a pair, and sweaters/shirts for similar prices. I am really looking forward to getting to goal so I can have a stable weight and begin to build a beautiful wardrobe that will last, as opposed to always needing to shop and buy what's cheap/fits/looks decent. It's way more fun than shopping for fat clothes. but in some ways it feels the same because I can't buy what I really want because I know it's only good for weeks or a couple of months. Either way, I always say I've had worse problems
  24. You know, days like that are just going to happen, I think. You just have to dust yourself off, and do better tomorrow. Or better still, make up for it at dinner. Just have a light dinner, and maybe go for a walk or something. Get the kids out of the house and make them walk around the block with you. For me, Doc told me at my initial consult in the first week of October that he wanted to see me lose 5-10 lbs in the 3 months of pre-op. I'd accomplish this mostly by cutting out the liquid calories, including milk. Skim milk. MILK?!? Okay fine. Well, then I'm going all in. I set up my food tracker goal to stay under 1800 cal/day. Most days, I'm between 1000 and 1400. Every couple of week though, I'll have a day - a meal - where I just don't give a F and I'm going to enjoy that burger at Five Guys. I skip the fries, but still, that meal wrecks my goal for the day. No biggie though, because on my worst week - Thanks giving week I didn't even bother weighing in, but the week after - I was net zero from two weeks before. No loss. No gain. I could live with that. One of the reasons I don't care about the occasional Burger day is because I know that after being Sleeved, that won't even be an option. Another reason is because I've lost over 25 lbs in the time the doc wanted 5-10. I really want to do this. I think it's my best chance at long-term success. If I get denied though, plan B is to just keep doing what I'm doing. My point of this statement? Don't let this goal hinge on something outside of your control, like finances. Get busy.
