  1. I was close to 35 like you and worried I wouldn’t make it and it turned out I was shorter than I thought so I was over 35. I guess we all shrink with age but I also think at a heavier weight I don’t stand up quite as straight as I do when I am thinner. I am anxious to see if my height changes again as I lose weight. Have you had your height measured recently. I hadn’t in years. my family dr’s office never checked it and the gynocologist’s nurse is much shorter than me so I always thought her measurement was just inaccurate.
  2. I agree. I feel sorry for people who don't wear bathing suits at the pool or beach because they worry people are staring at them. No one cares enough to stare at them. I've worn a swimsuit at my highest and lowest weights and never noticed anyone staring at me. I just noticed the bottom of the pool cause I was swimming!
  3. LOL. I don't care how others perceive my appearance and I am decidedly an old spinster, but I care what I look like in the mirror. You said that at 178 you would be "emaciated" so I wondered if you liked what you see in the mirror or not. Yes, I agree it's more important how you feel, so maybe I should rephrase this as, do you FEEL good at the weight you're at now?
  4. Sadly, I did not have the self control some of you have and I was actually gaining a little weight up until my pre-op diet of 16 days during which I lost 14 pounds. I participated in food funerals worried I wouldn’t be able to eat some things ever again which was not necessary at all because I am 12 weeks out and can eat darn near everything i ate pre surgery. I haven’t yet tried steak, rice or popcorn but I have tried everything else within reason. I have even tried pizza and pasta in very small quantities and I tolerated them fine. The other things I haven’t tried is anything really greasy or real sugar. I don’t want to have them on my diet and I am pretty afraid of dumping which I’m sure will help me steer clear for quite a while.
  5. In all honesty, I really don't care how I look. It's how I feel that matters to me. I've never really been interested in how others perceive me (hence my being a lifelong bachelor utterly oblivious to fashion/hair styles). I dress for comfort, not other people's opinions, and this journey has been about my health and my comfort and mobility; how I feel physically. If someone else likes the appearance of the "new me" compared to the old, that's fine and dandy, but that's never been a goal unto itself. Lowering the initial weight goal is more about "ok, that goal may have been reasonable at the time, but given the progress thus far, I think I can do better." But again, it's about me, not anyone else. I'm just an old fart that's set in his ways enough to not really care about how others think I look. Some may consider that self-centered... but that's a them problem, not a me problem. *shrug*
  6. I ate “normally” right up until the 2 week pre-op diet, so i didn’t lose (nor try to lose) any weight. I did lose 11lbs during that 2 week pre-op diet though.
  7. Do you feel that you will "look" how you want to look at 225? And congrats on your excellent weight loss!
  8. That "ideal" calculation is really too simple, isn't it? It doesn't factor in frame width, being "big boned", etc. Two people can be the same height but have vastly different frames/structures. I'm 6'1", which by the above calculation sets my ideal weight at 178 pounds. I would look absolutely emaciated at that weight, given that my frame is fairly wide/broad-shouldered. Depending on your body type, these sorts of formulas can create some really unrealistic (and unhealthy) expectations IMO, especially if people take the concept of "ideal" as a target to strive for... in the vast majority of cases that ideal, i.e., 100% of excess weight lost, is not realistic. I started at 383 and my surgeon and I started with a target of 250. If I hit that weight, I would consider the journey a success. Alternatively, the above formula sets the target at 239.5, which isn't far off the mark... although if you use online obesity calculators, 6'1" and 240 is still considered obese... go figure. As I approached my original goal faster than expected, I revised the goal downward from 250 to 225. I'm now at 10.5 months from date of surgery, and while my rate of loss has slowed drastically (as expected), that revised goal is now too in sight at 230.4.

If your BMI is JUST under the requirement of 35 and you are gaining 5-10lbs every few months, it seems like you could just wait a few months and you might be able to get insurance to cover it given your co-morbidities, depending on your insurance. Having said that, it's likely that some/most surgeons would still do the surgery since you are willing to do self-pay. I have heard that many industries/jobs are pretty fatphobic, and I'm so sorry you are facing that. I also know what you mean about being uncomfortable in my own skin, and tired going up the stairs, etc. I've always been fat, at least my whole adult life, so I don't have much to compare it to, but it's still horrible to feel it every day. Whether you keep gaining weight or do the surgery, you'll be facing food prep, and it's easier to deal with food prep (I hope!) with a smaller appetite. I understand from the people on this board that the first few months after surgery are pretty tough, but then it's really a much better life (for most people - some people have a hard time for a long time and regret the surgery, but most people say their only regret is not doing it sooner).

  12. First of all, this is extremely messed up and inappropriate and I'm sorry that it's happening to you. Not a doctor obviously but it seems like you do fit the parameters if you want to get it, having a BMI of essentially 35 and a co-morbidity of high blood pressure. And I wonder if the requirements are that stringent even if you self-pay. It sounds like it's affecting your quality of life and you are allowed to gain control however you see fit! ❤️ Sending love to you.
  13. I lost no weight prior to surgery with the exception of my pre-op liver shrinking diet where I lost 13 pounds in two weeks (I did two protein shakes per day and a sensible dinner). I had surgery on 5/25 and I’m down five pounds.
  14. Hello - I’m new here and am thankful for the great info on this site. I’m considering WLS and am wondering if my BMI is not high enough (heaven knows I don’t want it to get higher). I am 37, 5’2”, 190 pounds (BMI 34.7 so just below the 35 mark). I seem to put on about 5-10 pounds every few months. I have to take 4 medications to control my blood pressure, have pain in my feet, ankles and right knee. I think I actually waddle when I walk and that’s obscene. I just learned I also have high cholesterol and I snore really badly. I have been overweight and steadily gaining for about 10 years despite numerous diets, pills, subscriptions, memberships. I am tired of feeling bad in my own skin, and am embarrassed that I now cannot comfortably cross my legs, tie my shoes comfortably, take the stairs without being winded, etc. My weight is also now affecting my career as I have been told that leaders “look a certain way” and “have a certain physical presence.” I think these are coded statements about my weight. I also cannot participate in one of my favorite activities (horseback riding) because I am embarrassed about my weight and worried about being too big for my horse. I am motivated for a big change in my life, but also scared about post op meal planning and having to make my entire life revolve around food planning. I feel like for so long I have counted calories, carbs, macros, steps, activity with varied results, and all I want is to be free, healthy, and balanced in my body without thinking about food for every hour of every day. I am willing to pay out of pocket, and have reached out for a consultation locally. I guess I just wanted to say hello to this community and hear your stories if you have been in a similar place.

    Can I change my surgery?

    I'm torn between sleeve and bypass too. My surgeon and my psychopharmacologist want me to get sleeve to ensure I can absorb my psych meds, but I'm worried about GERD and weight regain, and not losing enough weight. I am hoping to get a second opinion, but I'll have to do that soon.

    I also gained a ton of weight from my bipolar meds (100 lbs in two years, more in the years after that). However, both the surgeon and the psychopharmacologist said that I should do sleeve to ensure I can still absorb the psych meds fully, rather than bypass. I do occasionally have reflux, so I'm a bit worried and I'm trying to get a second opinion, but think about that, especially since you don't have that much to lose. The meds made me crave sugar like crazy, but I find that when I don't have sugar, I stop craving it. See if you can do that before surgery, because the surgery won't fix that and you can just gain the weight back if you're head's not in it, since you'll still be on the psych meds.

    I had sleeve, I love sugar. I can eat about 200 calories of pure sugar an hour without any issues. If I try to eat more than 200 calories of sugar in an hour, I will feel kinda gross and nauseated. But there are a lot of hours in a day. It's very easy to eat yourself fat on sugar with a sleeve if you don't address the issues behind your disordered eating and get control of it. While weight loss surgery DOES help you slow down and have more reaction time to your bad habits....Weight loss surgery doesn't fix your head. Fixing your eating habits will still be up to you.
  18. Just curious, I'm wondering how much weight did you lose before surgery, and over what time period? So far I've lost 36 lbs over a little more than 4 months. Still don't have a surgery date!

    New Mattress

    I own a purple mattress and bought it in August of 2016. Even at our heaviest weight we never had a body impression and the bed doesn't need to be rotated. We bought this bed due to my wife's back injury and this bed has significantly improved our sleep. Even after losing all of this weight we still find the bed just as comfortable as it was before!
  20. "they" say (whoever "they" are) that weight loss is never as quick or significant with a revision as it is with a virgin surgery, but some people can lose quite a bit of weight with them. I've read the average is about 20 lbs - although that's an average so I would think that includes people who lost most of their excess weight with the sleeve and are doing the revision because of GERD. I don't know what the stats are if you only include people who had the revision when they were still quite a ways from goal. I would think you could make it, but again, it's probably going to be slower and more difficult than with a virgin surgery.
  21. @SethSnap That sounds rough! I'm glad you are not suffering from any "head hunger" or true hunger so it won't be so hard for you. I hope that keeps up. Maybe your doctor feels that the weight loss will be better with that plan? What surgery did you have? Maybe different surgeries require different post-op plans? I know it is usually similar between sleeve/gastric bypass. Good luck!

    Is my weight loss okay or slow?

    I, personally, think you're doing great. Everyone loses at a different pace and you started out at a much lower weight than many on this site and yet are losing a good amount. I wouldn't worry so much. Also, those weight loss calculators are all about average statistics. That includes the people who don't follow the diet guidelines as well as the people who do. As long as you stick to the dieting guidelines and get your exercise in then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to meet your goal. I wish you the best on your journey!
  23. Hi all, while my surgery went great I don't really have much contact with my doctor so I have to ask all of you kind people here I had my surgery on 3/17 and started off at around 225-230. Right now I'm at 191 lbs - is this normal? I monitor my weight loss and between May 2 and June 2 (full month) I lost 9.2 lbs. I would love to reach 120lbs one day, do you think this is possible? Based on information I found online (such as gastric sleeve calculators) my goal weight seems almost impossible! What are your thoughts? Thank you all for answers in advance! ❤️

    Hello, I wanted to know as much as I could about gastric bypass surgery and gastric sleeve surgery that I think I've scared myself right out of surgery. I've read three books and watched everything I could on the subject on YouTube. I also have PMR therefore I'm not sure if I can even have this surgery. I am 5'5 and weigh 226 pounds. I was 120 pounds when I was started on bipolar meds. I've been very thin all my life so I'm am very upset about all this weight that I'm carrying on a small frame. I have a question about food. I'm not big on food but I do love sugar some of this sugar addiction is caused by the meds. and some is just a natural craving. What's the point of getting a gastric sleeve if I'm still going to crave sweets? Thanks for any feedback. Minnie
