    Just banded and really suffering!

Hello, I am new to this site. I had my lapband surgery on January 3, 2011 and I'm so happy. Yes, I was in pain with the gas. Plus I had hiatal hernia surgery (swelling in the esophagus above the stomach). So, I had twice the pain. I was discharged with liquid tylenol with codeine. I don't use it much. But, only when I have gas pain which is starting back up. Anyone, have the same thing? To the newbie person it's going to be painful for at least 2 to 3 weeks. I still have some pain in my side and in my chest. Good luck to you!!!

August 14th - day 1 - not too terribly bad. This was the beginning of a new life for me. I could feel it, I could see it. I came home on Sunday from a trip to Vermont. When I got on the scale it read 249 lbs. I knew I had eaten badly in VT but I didn't think it was that bad. For dinner on Sunday, I had my last meal of shrimp fried rice and egg drop soup....it was very good. I took a couple of Sacra sagrada to help me go to the bathroom in the morning. I weighed in on Monday the 14th at 247 lbs. I have to be down to 237 according to Dr. Greenes pre-op instructions and at this rate, I'm going in the wrong direction. Dani is with her dad this week so I don't have to cook which makes it easier to not be around food. I was feeling a little weird so I went to bed early.

    BMI blues

That's funny you should ask that question at this time! I started out at 275. I have lost 54 pounds, and at 221 I am looking pretty good. ( I think! LOL). Although I still have a lot to lose. I just went to my three month check up yesterday and asked my surgeon about how much I should weigh, because, I , like you, was looking at the BMI chart, in which I should weigh 135. That, for me, is still about 95 pounds away. Compared to what I look like now, a 95 pound loss would make me look almost dead. And my dr. agreed. He said that if I were to weigh 135, I would look like a runway model. (And I don't think he meant that as a compliment! LOL) He said it was better to go with body fat percent. GamerGirl gave me some good comparison pics last week, and she also figured out how many more pounds I should lose to get there, and she was right on target with what my surgeon wanted!! So, in answer to your question, you look great, and really, listen to your dr. Your health will thank you for it!
  5. I got the flu. Yup, my kids are learning to share, and share they did! Couldnt keep anything down for 12 hours, and now I cannot hardly even keep Water down! My Fill doctor is 1.5 hours away, and I leave tomorrow on a long trip, so seeing him is not an option this week(end). Are there any methods out there that might help soothe the swelling I'm sure I have around my band? Has anyone else had this problem? I have an 8CC band, with 6cc in it. BTW, I'm new here! I was banded on 4/26/10, and have lost 100 pounds and counting!

    When do get active?

Well you should be walking day one after surgery. Everyday a little further. But as for hard core running or walking I'm have my two week follow up the 14th and I will discuss when I should start working up to 1 miles a day. As far as sex you should do it when you are comfortable. I wanted to do it since day3 or 4 but I guess that does not cordinate with my wife and her once every 3 month schedule we seem to be on...
  7. Sorry to hear about your experience. I didn't stick with them after all. They know with the first call to the insurance company whether there are exclusions for WLS in your plan. unfortunately a lot of these WLS centers are just into it for the money. Had I stuck with them I may have had a lap band by now BUT it would not have lasted. Four years ago I had surgery to repair a hiatal hernia; I had heard that it could cause problems,so to dig out the truth I went to a gastro doctor that had no affiliation with lap band to make sure I was a candidate. It can be done, BUT I was at much more risk for failure, and more importantly complications. Lap Band Solutions had said " sure your a candidate, the previous surgery is no problem" I believe Lap Band Solutions would have let me continue to have appointments or may have even done the surgery knowing I would later have complications that could lead to additional surgery or to have a revision. In any case they did not have the chance. I decided to get away from the cattle call clinics and search out a private Dr. that does WLS. I am very happy with my choice and will soon be reaping the success of a gastric sleeve. Out of all the WLS out there, I choose the sleeve, and all three of my doctors (primary, gastric, & WL surgeon) agree it is the best surgery for me. As for Lap Band Solutions.... I believe their practices to be deceptive, and maybe even risky. I have directed a letter to the AMA an the TX medical board telling them of my experience. I hope others like yourself will do the same.

    Confused in Cali

I saw my PCP on Friday too, and I will admit I was nervous walking in. But he was very receptive to the idea. I'm 5'4 and about 234 (40 BMI). He gave me my referral to see a bariatric surgeon to get the ball rolling. (I had already attended a seminar.) Apparently, the surgeon will determine who and what I need further referrals for (testing, psych eval, etc), and then my PCP has to write the referrals. Though they are in completely separate locations and practices, they will work as a team to make this happen. :rolleyes2: One requirement of my insurance company is that there is a supervised diet period of at least 6 consecutive months. I believe they're going to allow me to submit my records from Jenny Craig over the last 2 years (not all the time, not with significant success) to cover that, so at least I won't have that 6 month delay. I have no idea how long this will take to get approved, but I can't even get initial consultation the surgeon for another 2 weeks! :tt1: Clearly, patience is not my strong suit!!!

Feeling Like A Lap Band Failure

Had to laugh about the barbaric surgeon, too! Anyway, very similar thing happened to me. I irritated by band while on vacation last week. I knew I needed to go back to liquids only for at least 24 hours,, but didn't. I ended up in horrible pain in the ER. Had 3 cc's removed. No more pain, but the beast has been unleashed and I have no restriction and am hungry all the time. I have learned my lesson: I will not abuse my band again!!

    Seeking mentor

Only 5 mos out......but I might can answer some of your questions! I researched the Water issue post-op throughout the last few weeks. I have a few concerns. Since the stomach is only at 20% and the amount of liquid or food is from 2 to 4% at any given serving. How does one maintain a healthy level of water throughout the day? The only thing I could come up with is that I need to sip water all throughout the day. Maybe ice chips? Suggestions.....
  12. I too was banded on Tuesday 5/29. Went home the next day and was pretty tender. Yesterday was much better. today I hardly notice it unless I move the wrong way. I have hunger pains that come and go and occassionally feel like theres a knot under my sternum. Doc has me on Clear liquids for 2 weeks but its a lot more tolerable than the preop diet....ALOT! I had a little depression yesterday but its subsiding. Main thing is I'm bored.

    BMI blues

I am five months out down 93 pounds from the day of surgery and about 120 pounds down from the start of my weight loss journey. I am six foot four and 248 pounds and when I calculated my BMI I am still classified as obese. I saw my doctor last week and he flat told me that I had lost enough weight. I simply told him that this may be true but according to my BMI I was still obese and he flatly told me that I didn't need to worry about that. All of his staff were amazed how much weight I had lost (he is my pulmonolgist and only sees me every six months) so of course the last time I saw him I had not even had my surgery. My question is, does anybody think that the BMI is really a wide ruler to determine a persons weight? I know I have went from a size 50 jeans to size 36 jeans and I have not worn that size jeans since I was in my 20's. I'm 60 now. What do you think, do I look obese? Please be honest ok? Thanks Mark Mom_&_Dad.bmp
  14. Whats up everyone my name is Chris. I've been on "the lap band journey" for about 9 months now. During the summer of last year I went to my doctor for a checkup and he asked if I ever thought about weight loss surgery. I told him I thought about it and have done a little research but haven't pursued anything yet. He recommended me to an associate of his who does WLS so after a couple of weeks of thinking about it I gave him a call. I spoke to his secretary and got an appointment for January since he wasn't accepting any new patients until after the New Year. The day of my consultation finally came around after a long holiday season. I did the basic physical(weight/height/etc.) and from that he determined I was a candidate for surgery. Fast forward to today, I'm now done with the Upper GI series, liver/gall bladder ultrasound, stress test/EKG, nutritionist, and psych eval. My last step is to see my surgeon again next week and hopefully submit everything to insurance. If all goes well I will get my date for surgery. Wish me luck.

    First starting to exercise

Heard exercise helps stress, and I had one heck of a weekend, so last night in the dark, at the high school track, I took a step. Then another, then another.... Three miles. No partner, no ipod, just unwinding my head. It helped. Tonight, three miles again. Ipod this time. Kinda proud of myself for a change.

    I am pissed off!

I feel you. I spent the months of Nov and Dec taking care of my pre op business. I had surgery on Dec. 17th, the first day of our Winter Break. (I work at the Admin office at a school) So, no one is around, I went to work today, and my voicemail is flooded with calls wishing me luck, and hoping that I get well soon. Some even said that they would love to go shopping with me for new clothes. I was totally dumbfounded. The only person that knew was my boss, the Superintendent. I had to tell him why i was going to be off for a couple weeks. Now, I am anticipating what you experienced as the teachers come in this week and next... But like it was mentioned before, we are currently the HOT NEWS, and will have our 15 minutes, before someone else takes the spotlight, whether they want it or not. Maybe this is a school thing? I am only concerned about doing my job, and not in what anyone else thinks, their thoughts don't pay my bills. I know it's hard, but it will boil over and we will be able to move on with the current.

    3 pounds below goal!

I am so sorry for the loss of your aunt. So many times, the lessons that we receive from the things that we experience are the basis for our future growth and truly do make us all the better. After experiencing so many close losses myself now, I no longer hold back what I want and need to tell people . . . mostly those three little words that none of us use enough *I love you*. My hardest lesson was learned when a good friend who was dying asked me to come down on a Wednesday and I didn't think I could take off work so told her I would come on Saturday. She died on Friday and I never was able to tell her all the things I wanted to say or be there to comfort her as she lay dying. I've held on to that lesson ever since and it helps to guide me through my life. You journey is nothing short of amazing and you continue to be such an inspiration to all of the rest of us! Keep up the amazing work! Oh, and please share how you got such incredible arms!
  18. Looking at our sig it seems you're losing 8-9 pounds a month. I'm 8 months out and I'm losing the same so that seems about right to me. That's 2 pounds a week which is safe and healthy, and probably all you can expect being that far out. BTW I eat 1500 calories/day but I'm 6'2".
  19. Lisa I'm right there with you. I'm 7 mo out and have hit a wall! I'm 40 lbs to goal too. I just upped my cals to 1200 from 900. I still do protein shakes as well. I am trying this for a week and see how things go. If no change then I'm just going to do my best and hope that by June (my 1 yr mark) I make my goal.

    My Ongoing Journey

@@ripeone What exactly do you mean by nights not so good? Do you mean you eat stuff you shouldn't at night? Have you been stalled? Since you are doing well during the day, try to make the nights more like your days, i.e., eat protein instead of fat and sugar, and try not to eat too close to bed time. Emotional eating is a much harder thing to fix than what exactly you eat to deal with emotions. Good luck! You obviously know what to do since you are down 50 lbs.

    7th Day out

I am also 7 days out and i do feel a restriction. Im sure it is just swelling. My physician wont do a fill until 8 weeks post op to ensure ALL the swelling is gone first. I seem to have alot of problems with gas... both ends.. I dont get pressure in my chest so much as it feels like their is air in my stomach that needs to come out and cant get back up thru the band. I dont like it. I am sick of liquids.. sick of worrying about what im going to eat.. and tired of my port hurting.. and i am starving all the timne!! I just keep thinking about when i am able to eat regular food. By then i should feel better.. and to top it all off I have lost 15 pounds in 7 days so that is exciting. Hanging in there, Kathy

    2nd Day Smoke Free

Okay, so far so good. I've had some pretty harsh cravings, but haven't given in. As the craving hits, I just try to pretend that I'm on a surf board, and try to "ride the wave" all the way in. I know that the physical cravings only last 2-4 days, and there after it's all psychological. I quit before (cold turkey), and I can do it again. This is what I get for picking up a cigarette after being smoke free for 3 1/2 yrs. But this is what I must do in order to be banded. Not to mention the fact that it's great for my over all health. My office is offering free workout classes twice a week. At 5:15 on Monday's and Thursdays. I'm going to go. I think it will help me through this. Not to mention it will help me physically. My husband is very patient with me, and is being a huge source of support.

    Christmas Decorating

Today, my daughter and her hubby are coming over to help decorate for Christmas. We do it up pretty good around here. 10ft tree, lots of lights outside. I love the final product, but the work is really hard, and since my DH had shoulder surgery only 5 weeks ago, he can't really help much - but he sure does TRY!! 15 days smoke-free! Hooray!!! DH brought be a card last night in celebration of 2 weeks smoke-free. He's such a sweetie!!

    One week to go

Hi Mark, CONGRATULATIONS!!! LET THE COUNT DOWN BEGIN!!! How are you going after a week of Optifast? It was pretty ordinary, but I felt in pretty good health going into surgery because of it. I was banded last Thursday at The Valley by Mr Chris Hensman. Mr Richard Gilhome assisted. Dr John Zubevich was the anaethetist. It was a bit rough to start with, but now at a week out, and I am feeling much better. You will do fine - the hospital and everyone involved were terrific! Just a hint - I was very nauseous post op - I found out after I got home and reread the dietician notes that ice can upset your tummy - I had been chomping down the ice chips like a demon! After the first day post-op I recommend that you stick with the room-temp Water jug instead. Keep sipping as often as you can to keep you fluids up, as dehydration also makes you nauseous. Hope to meet you at Bandworks on the 31st at Mulgrave. All the best, check in and let us know how you are going. Cheers, Anna.
