How long for hospital weight to drop off?

My doctor (my primary) told me to take my blood pressure/water pill combo the day after surgery and I peed like a freaking racehorse. I was under surgery weight by day 3. Now, six weeks out, I'm done with the first stall (it was more like a slowdown) and am losing relatively steadily at around 3 lbs/week, which is elating.
  2. I'm 4 months post-op sleeve and I have had several stalls. One thing that helps me is not seeing the scale go UP! I stay at the same weight for a couple of weeks and then I might lose a pound. I totally celebrate that pound and I say, even out loud: "I'll take it!" Reason: I got to this point in my life because I did stupid fad diets and wrecked my metabolism and my body. This is my last chance to get this right. I figure it will take me a year to get to 50 lb weight lost and then another 6 months to a year to get to my goal. But, I WILL GET THERE in the end! How long for hospital weight to drop off?

I opted not to weight for a full week post-op. Surgery was on a Tuesday, I stepped on the scale for the first time the following Tuesday. Everyone will shake off the IV fluids at their own pace, so no point weighing sooner than is realistic. Staying on top of your fluids, walking as much as you can, and getting adequate sleep will all help healing tremendously. Congrats! You're going to do great!

    Get back on track

Get back to basics. Focus on getting in your fluids. Weigh and track everything you eat. Eat your protein first and aim to hit your protein goal every day. Get back to moving your body for at least 30 minutes a day. If you are struggling with those, or after a few weeks don't see improvement, reach out to your surgery center. Getting back to basics can be hard, but small steps add up, you can do it!

    What Was Your Biggest Challenge

I am going for work. I live near Boston. I'll be staying near Eaton Centre, near where I'm working. I love all the Asian restaurants there, but I haven't figured out what I'll eat now that I've had surgery. Last time I was there was about a week before my pre-op diet and I ate EVERYTHING!
  6. I use the weight I was when I decided to pursue WLS because that's when I started my weight loss journey. My highest recorded weight was actually in 2017, but I didn't start my weight loss journey until 2019 so I use the weight I was in 2019 rather than 2017 (i.e I use 389 instead of 392) because I had too much stuff going on in 2017 and wasn't focusing on weight loss at all (I had brain surgery in 2017 and my sister also had a really traumatic miscarriage when she was at 19 weeks).

What do you consider "Starting Weight"?

Since my surgeon's clinic doesn't use the two-week liver shrinking diet, giving patients a narrow range of weight loss in a specific time period instead, I count my starting weight as my first visit to their office.

    Get back on track

How do I get back on track? I was able to get down to 170 with my goal 160. The last month I’ve ate whatever and went from 5 times to 2 times a week at the gym. Which has resulted in 5lbs regain in a month. I can’t go back to old habits but it’s hard to get back on track .

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I'm trying to be part of this group! My pre-op appointment is on 3 Nov 21 and I am praying surgery is booked for 2 weeks after.
  10. I'm still not able to get much down beside liquids. I've been able to successfully drink some protein shakes and some juice but I am extremely apprehensive about anything more substantial than that. I'm in a unique situation because I had surgery 3 hours from where I live. My surgeon's office had me to go to the emergency room for a scan to determine if the shoulder pain was a blood clot and to have a blood panel run to see if I was dehydrated. Long story short, between COVID patients and drug overdoses in the sad Appalachian city I live in, I was in the waiting room at the ER for 7 hours with no timeframe for when I might be seen, so I just left. I was to a point where I felt like I was going to pass out from a combination of no liquids, no calories, and having to wear a mask that long when I wasn't feeling well (with my gross, dry mouth puffing away in it). The good news is that my partner's behavior last week was just a bad day, and he has been wonderful since then. He did some reading and found out my recovery is more normal than not at this point and has completely stopped giving me crap about it.

    6 Months and Stalled

Wow! That's really low calorie. By 6 months out I was expected to hit 1000-1200 per day. These days a "high day" is 1300 cal and a low day is 1000. I find if you eat too little, your body stalls faster too because it thinks you are starving. I try to vary each day by at least 100 calories when I am paying attention and actually loosing. So glad to hear you are going down again this week. That's wonderful! And yes, I agree. On a longer stall, I have totally slipped into the mindset of "Oh well, guess that's it for weight loss. At least I weigh less than I have since I was 19!" I mean, I wouldn't even mind stopping loosing weight at 180. At my height that's still way too much but 102lbs down would be such an amazing thing regardless.
  12. I didn’t gain any weight while in the hospital. But then again I was clearly not overly hydrated as most people are because I had to go back and get fluids. My clinic did tell me not to weigh myself for the first two weeks though and I think that was probably because of fluid and inflammation causing weight gain.
  13. I can't offer assurances but I can commiserate. I was sleeved 5/12 and am very much in the same boat. My weight has remained pretty steadily the same for the last 3 weeks approximately. So frustrating especially because I'm soo close to being under 200lbs. And similarly I'm feeling less restriction and getting hungry more often. I'm trying to eat more slowly as that really helps with feeling the restriction. But I'm mostly just trying to stay on course and hope my body will eventually move forward. I'd hate to think I hit the end of the road at only 5 months. I see my surgeon in a few weeks for a 6 month follow up so perhaps he will have some advice. Good luck!
  14. Omg, your post just made me realize for the first time that at my highest weight (at the start of my 2 week pre op lquid diet), I actually weighed more than I did at my highest weight when I was pregnant! *mind blown*
  15. I use the weight at the start of the 2 week pre op liquid diet (which is essentially when I started the drastic change to my eating habits).
  16. What do you consider starting weight? Weight at start of Liquid Diet (or any other pre-op diet)? Weight at day of surgery? Weight before you started losing weight? In my case, I reached my high weight (... panicked ) ,and started dieting.. lost 35 lbs.. then while still on my diet, decided to get the surgery. Started liquid diet a week ago, and have lost 12 lbs since then.. Not sure what you all use as your starting weight. Thanks!

    Hi Ladies!

Check out this book and its companions. Its plan is what I intend to follow when I'm back to normal food post-surgery. I've been following this pre-surgery and have lost 50 lbs, This seems to be the most logical and nutritionally sound food plan that I've found. It's not "keto" but there are similarities. Particularly look at the Metabolic Reset (on page 20) if you are stalled. The Author's premise is to eat far more vegetables, unlimited fruit, snack only on these and nuts & seeds, and use animal protein as flavor not as the star of every meal. Matthew Weiner, MD, A Pound of Cure. He's also written The Bariatric Guide and Cookbook, and How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works. I recommend all three books, available in paperback and Kindle. The author is a bariatric surgeon.

    6 Months and Stalled

I totally know what you mean. When the stall goes on for so long it can be easy to just be like "well, this is where I am, so I might as well just eat whatever I want!" Honestly I think part of the problem might be that I'm not eating enough (usually only between 500-600 cals a day and like 5 grams of carbs) and then that also causes you to not have as many/as frequent BMs!! I found that when I bumped up my calories, added some more fiber and carbs that I felt better, but I also started going to the bathroom better and that seems to have helped - I lost about 2lbs in the past week! It can be so easy to slack though! Hopefully we are all moving through this! I"m going to throw myself an actual party when I finally hit 199 - we are so close!!!
  19. My RNY revision will probably be in December, too. I doin't have a date yet, but my surgeon told me that it was likely to happen before the end of the year. I still have to complete a stress test and echocardiogram which are not scheduled for another 2 weeks. Only then will the documentation be sent to Medicare. After they approve, I'll get a surgery date.
  20. Congrats!! How wonderful! I am almost at onederland too. Hoping to loose the final pound to hit it this week.

    Bariatric surgery and dating

I think the issue is more with the duodenal switch patients because the duodenum is taken out it's the a portion of the intestines where the enzymes are... along with a portion of the intestines the stomach and the appendix along with the gallbladder.. it doesn't really affect patients that have had the roux-en-y the lap band or the sleeve. Sorry to hear about the constipation. I've been there maybe three times since 2012.

    What Was Your Biggest Challenge

There used to be a tea shop at the mall near me, but it closed. There might be one near where I'm staying in Toronto this week, so I'll see if I can find one. Otherwise I can probably order some online. Thanks!

    6 Months and Stalled

I broke my stall and lost 5lbs at the end of June. Then I stalled again and lost nothing for the longest time. A couple weeks ago, I had a rough patch and started snacking on junk thanks to some meds I was put on making me constantly hungry. I saw the scale go up by 4lbs. This week, I decided to go back to "the beginning". I am doing 2 shakes a day and then really good dinner and snacks. I lost that 4lbs and am down almost another lb. SO CLOSE to 199.9. I have been itching to get below 200 as well. Sitting at 201.0 this morning. Are you counting your cal/carbs to see if you are above or below your target? I noticed when I stopped counting, I slacked on eating as well. Edited to change the month from July to June. I stalled for SO long!

    3 days post op

Those first days are a challenge! I also found warm drinks slightly easier at that stage. Broth was my best friend! I drank both regular and bone - bone broth has a lot more protein so that was a bonus. I kept drinking both for a while. For me, things improved exponentially after the first week.

How long for hospital weight to drop off?

When I had my VSG I was 278.2 the week before surgery, 271 when discharged, and 258.3 at my post-op appointment 10 days later. I had very minimal bruising or swelling that time. When I had my revision (8 months later due to gerd), I was 222 a week before surgery, left the hospital at 234.4 (was there 4 days due to needing iron), and was 215.7lbs at my one week post-op appointment. I had loads of bruising this time around. The picture is from a week post-op and I still had visible bruising at 20 days post-op (second picture) though it never hurt.
