    Revising from Sleeve to Bypass...

While I have not had my sleeve yet, I do have to say this is where I would start before a revision....changing the type of tool isn't going to fix the drive to eat out of head hunger. I know in advance that a big part of my problem will be mental, and I have started with a new therapist to help me with those issues. Good luck with your decision
  2. Just curious, why did you need a sleeve revision? Did you have to pay again?

    Vsg to rny

My revision from VSG to RNY was in May of this year so far so good. I can pretty much tolerate whatever I am eating (I am eating turkey, chicken, veggies and other soft proteins, no slider foods). I was hoping I would have the dumping but I don’t so far. But then again I haven’t had anything truly sweet etc. which is good lol i feel full with some foods but I think because I keep my food/meals to 3 ounces or less. I am afraid to try and eat more. I get extremely full with salads though and they cause me to burp a lot. It’s probably the lettuce but yea, no complications so far

    Lap band conversion to ?

I chose to revise to the sleeve instead of the bypass because the malabsorption issue was one I didn't want to deal with. My surgeon told me yesterday he took off about 70% of my stomach instead of the normal 80% - he left more so that where my band was and where my esophagus met the stomach I wouldn't be prone to getting a leak. The weight loss may be slower but for me, slow and steady wins the race and I just didn't feel right about the bypass for me personally.
  6. I was first considering the Lap Band as well but I started researching the Sleeve which I seem to think is a better choice. Yesterday, I had my third appointment with the surgeon and I told him that I had changed my mind to the Sleeve and he asked me why. I told him first when I attended the support group a few weeks ago no one in the group had the Lap Band nor was waiting to have it done...everyone either had the Sleeve or RNY. He did state that he believes I made the right decision and many of the Lap Bands their practice has performed are being revised to the Sleeve. He said I would have much more success with the Sleeve and their practice has only had one patient with a leak which was fixed by a revision to RNY. He did explain many of the different complications patients have with the Lap Band like slippage, port revision and body rejection. I have found an abundant amount of support in this decision from many people on this forum as well as the support groups offered. I wish you the best of luck with whatever decision that you choose!!
  7. I had the lap band put in 4 yrs ago. Due to a slip I had it removed 2 weeks ago. I lost about 75 lbs with it but I want to lose a lot more. I could have had the band repositioned but my surgeon, Dr Abkin suggested that it may be time to think about a revision instead since I had a lot more weight to lose. He didn't think the lap band would get me the results I was looking for. I knew initially when I got the band that it may not give me the results I wanted but I couldn't wrap my head around having such a drastic surgery like the bypass. Now I am glad there is an adoption for the sleeve. While it is a permanent surgery because they remove 85% of your stomach I like the fact that they don't have to reroute intestines etc. I am scheduled to be sleeved Dec 10th. While I am very nervous about surgery I am completely confident in my surgeon's abilities and I am sure everything will go well.
  8. :confused1:I am in the process of getting the sleeve- Just not sure if I will have to self pay or I can get insurance to cover. OK, a little history- had lap band in mex about 3 yrs ago. I had it slip after only a couple of months and had to have surgery. My insurance paid. Later about 1 year later, it eroded and i had to have surgery. HOWEVER, DH and I had just returned from a vacation from Cabo. I was robbed at night the night before we left and thrown down a flight of cement stairs. Just mostly scraped and bruised up. After home that week, started feeling flu like for a couple of days, them BAM, like I hit a brick wall I started going downhill fast. Went to ER, they did all kind of tests and still did not know. BP was tanking fast, white count was through the roof, basically I was in sepsis. Emergency surgery showed a stomach perforation. My stomach had been slowly leaking into abdominal cavity for days until the last day when my liver shifted a bit and allowed the flow to become much more substantial. Anyway, I recovered. Now 100lb back on and more I am getting the sleeve. Insurance paid for this surgery as well, but only because surgery report said that the band was removed as a precaution, that the perforation was due to injury. The surgeon later told me it was a mixed bag b/twn the band and the injury. So I spoke with local surgeon who did the surgery, his billing dept, and spoke hypothetically to my ins co " what if we need to do a revision to my stomach where the perforations was, i.e. weak and portion needed to be removed" they said yeah we will cover it if you need a follow up for the tear. They have an exclusion policy on WLS though, so I have to be VERY careful when submitting the coding. Billing dept asked me what CPT codes should we use? I said I will get back to her. I can't exactly ask my insurance which ones. Its a one shot deal so I need to get it right. Any advice????

    Lap band conversion to ?

I had lap band placed in 2009, lost about 40 lbs the first 3 months and ended up pregnant. Gained all the weight back and then some. Tried fills after having my daughter, but nothing really worked. So, I'm now trying to convert to another wls and just so unsure which way to go. I have been researching, youtubing, and reading forums. My dr removed my lap band in May 2015. No issues with reflux, slippage, erosions, etc. I initially decided on the sleeve, but I've read so many issues such as slow or no weight loss due to being a conversion, sleeve revising to bypass, and sleeves starting to have more issues with leaks. I guess I need to stay offline. Bypass is considered the "gold standard", but I'm scared about the rerouting, taking vitamins for the rest of my life, and of course...leaks. So, I guess I need feedback on your experiences and why you chose to convert to bypass or sleeve. Also, anybody with slow weight loss or other issues with sleeve that had conversion done in 1 surgery versus 2 surgeries, I would like to hear your experiences as well.
  10. Hi Everyone, I have had the lapland for several years. I recently changed insurance companies and had to find a new dr. I had not had a fill in several years and felt I needed to see the Dr. Well.... after poking over 10 times without any numbing medicine he decided to to an x ray. My port has flipped, it is facing straight up toward my face. He tried several more attempts at getting to the band and FINALLY got it. He was able to get all of the fluid out, but when he tried to put it back in the needle had a leak. After several more attempts at poking me he called it quits. Now my band has no liquid in it and he wants to do a port revision. Has anybody else had this type of issue. I am so depressed and crying. I do not want to gain all the weight I lost back. He also said my esophagus was stretched and wanted to give it some time to heal. HELP!
  11. Omg I better not gain a pound If I get a revision to bypass...I would wire my jaw shut!!!I mean seriously...ugh...
  12. Pictures always depress me. No matter how good I feel, they are mind poison. Just accept that you wont look like that forever and 35lbs is awesome! Im 272 right now HW 291 and I know I don't look how I want but I get revision-sleeved soon and know that I will look hella better then and that I still look better than 291 now. Just keep your eyes forward and maybe dont weigh yourself for a week or 2....no distractions on your plan. Feel better! Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App

    Being overfilled ruined my band

Best wishes, as others have said, just because you have a slip, doe not mean the band is ruined! I had to have a surgery for band revision, it did not need to be replaced. I am good now, 2 years ago, I was too tight, too! As others have said, you need to be your own advocate. I wish you best luck and hope that you can recover something, if you decide to sue. 14. I'm not sure it's a "one time chance". That is a very disheartening thought. And we do see people lose their regain, so that makes me think it's not quite accurate. However, I do think it's harder for people like us to lose weight than the general population, and I do agree it is wise to take advantage of the first year or so. It's imperative to learn how to manage our weight and make some permanent life style changes. Man I wish we could sticky this. People need to understand that the losing phase post-op I'd a one time chance. Go as low as possible as fast as possible while still being healthy. This is the only time it is going to be this "easy" later you have to fight like everyone else. All the band revision people pretty much prove this theory.
  15. I'm just scared because when I had the original sleeve done I never lost any weight. 2 years later Dr agreed to do a revision of my sleeve (plactation). This is my last chance. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G928A using the BariatricPal App
  16. Has anyone in this group had a revision from band or gastric sleeve? Gastric sleeve patient already gaining weight? Wrong choice?

    Anyone Have Dyspepsia? Frequent Heartburn?

I'm just under 4 weeks out from surgery and have been dealing with heartburn daily this week. I suffered from heartburn before surgery. My doctor started me on Prilosec OTC once a day in 2009 and it went away. I never had an issue anymore. My surgeon talked with me about this problem likely becoming worse after surgery and spoke about people having to revise to RNY to get rid of it. I DON'T want this to happen. I'm going to call my nurse tomorrow and tell them that the Prilosec alone is not managing it at this point. I've read on this forum about people using different combinations of PPIs to manage it. Hopefully, I can find something that works. I don't want any further surgeries, DEFINITELY not RNY.

    learning to eat/drink again

It can be hard to eat (and drink) after surgery. This should get better as your body heals. Remember to chew, chew, chew when you get into the solid stage. I found that softer foods (Soups and chili) went down smother than harder food such as steaks. One of the men in our bariatric surgery support group meetings had a lapland revision to a RNY gastric bypass because his band was eating into his stomach and had to be removed. Because of the scar tissue that had built up, his new pouch was a little smaller than most RNY patients. Therefore it was a little difficult for him at the beginning with the volume of food per meal. But he turned out well.
  19. Hi All. I am 4 wks. post op. Just got the ok to advance to soft foods. I am still having trouble drinking let alone eating. Not sure what I am doing wrong but it feels like I always have something stuck and hurts for a few minutes. Should I be waiting so many seconds or minutes between sip and bites of food? I am a revised lap band patient so i am used to being able to drinking swigs of liquid. i am trying to take small sips, but it feels like it's just sitting down there and needs to come back up. I follow up with my surgeon Thursday, but could use some advice today.
  20. CowgirlJane, amazing and beautiful pictures of your journey. Thank you for sharing them with us. I simply can't wait to get back onto a horse.. The freedom. Yes, you are an inspiration, and your success gives another band/sleeve revision hope!! Thank you
  21. Hi everybody. New here. I had a band to sleeve revision on May 5, and have had a lemon size "hematoma" under the incision where my port was removed since. It has started draining, at random times since May 12. I saw the PA, who went to grab the surgeon...he said "to be expected" and not a problem. Well, except that when it decides to drain, it's a pretty big amount...ruins my clothes, sheets, etc. Anybody else had this problem? What did you do about it? I see the surgeon for my 2 week post-op visit on Wed. My husband is worried, thinks we need to call.
  22. 8 weeks ago I have a posterior lift and lipo of flanks.... also had a complete front scar revision (from my tummy tuck a year ago). At 8 weks, I am still feeling swollen, but more important, my waist seems bigger than pre surgery (none of my jeans fit like I went up a full waist size. Anyone thoughts? I se my doc in 10 days, so I will know more, but just seems like I should be smaller than before, not actually have a larger waist.

    Quantity of food

I read about it but my situation may be different as I had a revision. But that topic did give me some hope for the future.
  24. I had BCBS, but when I had the Band in 2007, I had United Healthcare. So when my doc and I discusses a revision his insurance coordinator did her research and found that Anthem BCBS treated it as a total new WLS, they didn't require the 6 mos diet, but required all the test, it took me about 2 months to do everything but once the paperwork was submitted, less than 48 hours to Get my approval. It was worth the wait! Best wishes
  25. I also have united healthcare. Since I had complications with medical records to support it I did not have to jump through all the hoops. Only thing I had to do was pre-op education class. I have an excellent surgeon and he removed the lap band and did the revision in 1 surgery.
