What do you think - body image?

My Winnie-the-Pooh belly has gone down considerably but I've still got a pouch there. When I stand sideways in front of the mirror sometimes I push it in to see what that profile will look like if I keep working out as much as I can and continue to make excellent choices. But it's so much better than it was -- the spare tire. People gain in different ways and I definitely am a belly fat body type. I think my favorite part is the throat and chest, the collarbones, feeling more definition there. I've always thought my upper arms were fat, even when that wasn't possible. Now I've lost three inches on each arm -- amazing. Cannot even fathom that! I think measuring is really good, that and jean sizes, for letting me know what is real. Trying on clothes over the weekend that's what I felt like, "it's real, my weight loss is real, the clothes are smaller and they fit!"

    Second guessing

I'm 62. I was going to wait until 65 so Medicare would pay for it...my ins wouldn't. My dr said I'd have diabetics by then. I've had many surgeries...run over by a dump truck, head-on collision , rear ended by a semi, 3 C-sections, a virus killing my platelets , a brain hemorrhage , one hip replacement, injections in my neck and back. Needless to say I paid for the surgery myself...6 weeks out...and did it for my health...I have too many scars to do it for looks. I just wanted to be healthier. Im 4'11" My highest weight was 265. I weighed 200 before the surgery and have lost 35 lbs. there comes a point in ones life where you gotta do what you gotta do! I stayed in the hospital 2 nights, stayed at a friends house 1night. And then drove 90 miles home. Don't let fear steal your dream.

    Second guessing

I had that thought run through my head about a week before surgery. (Although I was 43, no kids, etc.) As I'm sure others have mentioned, look at the long term health benefits of getting to a healthy weight. Right NOW you don't have health issues, but what about in 5-10 years? What if you don't lose the baby weight and gain more? My only regret with the surgery is that I didn't have it sooner.
  7. Doctors always talk in averages because they cannot accurately predict who will be successful and who won't. With WlS in general there are some people that lose nothing because they don't follow the plan and they self sabotage by eating high cal sliders. Then there are people that lose all their excess weight and more. The way to ensure that you are the second type is by having the right mindset, remembering that surgery is a tool not a magic wand and putting in your very best effort.
  8. To come back to topic I think these 60% EWL after 5 years or so are pretty much common after some decades of WLS. I don't know how many people really get to a normal or near-normal weight and maintain it after 10 years or so. I don't know many people IRL who had WLS. One had lap band as well and gained it all back. Another one got to a normal weight and gained part of it back. Another one got lap band and revision to bypass and after looking at a picture of her a few months ago she gained at least most of it back. About the people on the boards who vanish - who knows? After all I vanished from the boards for years and years before a revision got me back to one. When it comes to weight and regain and the like I think too many people are asking the wrong question. Usually the question is: "What are these people doing to get to a and maintain a normal weight?" I personally think the question should be: "What enables these people to do the necessary things to get to a and maintain a normal weight?"
  9. Thanks, CyclicalLoser. I like your explanation and it makes good sense. We're all so different that the doctors have to downplay how much weight we could lose. And as many have said, gaining mobility, energy, better health are more important to me than a number on the scale. I just don't want to still be obese after all is said and done. I've read so many encouraging stories that I think with this new tool, hard work, and determination I will make this work! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Best Sugar Substitues

Is honey on your plan? Honey is the same as actual sugar in most ways—calorically and glycemic index are very similar. It’s not really a sugar substitute in the way these are. Honey would not have been on my plan while I was losing weight and it isn’t on my plan in maintenance. I save my calories for things with nutritional value 90% of the time. Honey would be in the same treat category as sugar for me.
  12. Actually I had that for the first few months and I decided to go lower on profile after that "ban wave" rushed through the boards and the "tough lovers gang" got banned. Never had pics online here (or anywhere) other than the one my employer made of our department. I think the older users can remember that I had them on my profile. About regain: I wrote in older posts about (temporary) regain when I stopped smoking and when the band started to migrate and fail in the year before revision. Both times the weight loss following the regain was easy and without a real effort. I have a BMI of 25 or 26 (depending on season) and I'm still not sure if I should shell out the money for plastics but I guess I will in the end. I'm actually quite afraid of complications on the one hand but on the other hand I'm quite unhappy with several of my hanging body parts. Stats can be faked and the person in the picture might not really be me. So while I can see where you're coming from I don't think it really adds to the credibility of a person when he/she is posting stats. For example, I wrote above that I had temporary regain twice and that getting rid of the weight again was quite effortless. Well, it could be that I made that up or that I regained four or five times during the years or that I struggle mightily... posting any stats or pictures won't change that everything I write here could as well be a big, fat lie. I have drawn information for free from the net without end regarding endless topics so I'm happy to provide my experiences and opinions in return because I think they might be helpful for others but I don't need people to believe me. I'm not butt hurt if people on a message board don't believe what I have to say or that they might think my whole account is fake and I never had WLS because at the end of the day it doesn't really make a difference for me. I'm not writing on message boards to make my living. 😂 Can't provide any horror stories here. I had laparoscopic gastric banding and you can only see the little scars at the usual incision points. But back in the days it was lap band for a young woman or nothing so there wasn't much to choose from.
  13. I'm in month 5 of my 6 month "waiting period" before my surgeon submits my paperwork to insurance. I'm hopeful to have RNYGB in early 2019 if all goes well. I've heard that success is considered losing 50% of your excess weight. However, I am about 120 lbs overweight and would really like to lose 100 lbs or more. Am I dreaming? Or is that attainable? I am 5' 3" and weigh about 233. I exercise daily for a minimum of 30 minutes and have every intention of sticking with the exercise, water, and nutrition plan. I just feel like I will be disappointed to only lose 60 lbs! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. Patients are told to expect about 60% average... But people are often below and above average. Genetics, meds, health issues, mental issues, exercise, eating patterns, skilll if surgeon, rate of recovery, complications and even work stress can all play a part but YOU can manipulate your lifestyle to get more or less out of the surgery depending on how you work after. Maintenance is also a place where people regain weight and it's harder to take it off again, so that's an idea to stay vigilant about. I had a sleeveb and so far have lost 90ish lbs. My surgery weight was 238 (consultation 249 but the highest ever in the 270s), It's possible, but you better be ready to wooooork. Safe Journey!

    Possible Surgery Delay- Freaking Out!

My surgery is Monday!!! My surgeons office called me yesterday, Friday, to tell me that the 2nd round of blood testing was showing something unusual, that pregnancy was "indeterminate". It is not possible that I'm pregnant, I'm 57 and post-menopausal but nevertheless the Surgeon made me contact my Gynecologist and have her send a letter explaining why. It turns out the hormones I was taking (stopped almost 4 weeks ago) were causing the unusual results in my blood work. I was so worried that my surgery was going to get postponed that I was freaking out. Once you have been on the liquid diet for almost 2 weeks and just want to get the surgery over with its hard to imagine having it postponed or cancelled. On top of that I choose this time of the year (holiday season) as it would cause the least amount of suspicion about why I needed two weeks off work. My boss is so nosy I know she will be giving me the third degree anyway when she sees me starting to loose weight.
  17. Just short of a few days from 5 months since my VSG surgery. So far I have lost 55 lbs. To be honest with you I could have lost more than this by now but my commitment level to exercise and to eating what I should not has not been as it should. I am not ungrateful for loosing 55 lbs, dont get me wrong, but I know i have also eaten crap that if i did not do that I would be at a better weight loss bracket. You really have to be fully committed BEFORE you start this surgery and I only realize it now. I had some misconceptions about the surgery and thought that it would 'carry' me more without the level of personal responsibility and commitment it actually takes. I thought that my appetite would be next to nothing but immediately following the surgery I felt starving. My appetite never really waned but its true that you do fill up quickly - thank God for stomach restriction! I still cant eat most meats and I do not have 'meals' yet per se, I like soups, but I do get calories in by things that are called slider foods. A cookie, some chocolate, some ice cream……..all no nos for weight loss. So while I have lost a lot of weight and look quite different already (2 people I ran into last week actually did not recognize me!) I am doing better in changing my eating habits still compared to what I used to. And my glucose levels are MUCH better but this TAKES WORK! You experience weight loss plateaus,. At 4 months I reached a particular weight band and I have vacillated in the 5 lbs up and 5 lbs down range for 2 months now. Its SO FRUSTRATING! I am able to eat a lot more than before so around 4 months you have to really make an effort to restrict your calorie intake. I brought WAY TOO MUCH stuff before surgery LOL I am a type A person and like to be very organized. I bought too much post surgery medication. I bought lots of bariatric surgery paraphernalia like food measuring devices and things that I have never used once. I did use the waist binder for 2 months and was glad I bought that but not even the GasX strips work. Seriously, I bought so many of them and they don't really work. What works is a nice HOT cup of tea! Gas comes right up. All this bloody GasX strips I have and wayyyyyyyyy too many antacids. I need the antacids but I bought TOO many. I only get acid reflux occasionally. Buy things AS you need them. Don't by bra's in advance anticipating weight loss. Your boobs change shape and cup size. I made that mistake. I am no longer a DD but a D and I bought smaller back sizes at DD and now the cup is too big!
  18. I didn't have any problem with my first fill, but did with my second. The doctor said I had lost enough weight that the scar tissue had shifted over my port. He poked around for quite a while trying to push through the scar tissue; I was watching the needle bent almost into a horseshoe shape from the pressure! Finally he said, "I need a bigger needle" and tried again with a thicker one, and was successful. It wasn't that bad, but I was a bit tender the next day. His only comment was, "You're a hard, hard woman!"
  19. All I did was treadmill walking post-op for a year. I went from 268 to 198 in six months. Then it took me another six months to drop the next 20lbs and as those six months went on, I did less and less cardio. (bad girl!) about 1.5 months ago I got my fanny back on the treadmill and about a month ago I started a running training program. I've dropped another 5lbs. I started the running to hopefully help tone up and tighten up some skin. I'm sure some light weight lifting would help too, I just don't have time.

14 days post op 7 lb loss

as long as you're following your plan, you're good. People lose at all different rates due to all different factors. I was a slow loser throughout my whole weight loss journey, but I ended up losing all of my excess weight.
  21. Wow, that was fast. He didn't really discourage me, it just kindoff made me mad. First you tell me too loose the weight, then when I say I have a plan you discredit that plan. Meaning him. If dieting worked I would be skinny. Duh. Thanks so much for your encouragment. I am set on having the band. I'm just in the very beginning of the process. I will read, read and read somemore. Thanks again.
  22. Plus, you get a lot of fluids while you are in the hospital. It took me a week before I was actually below my weight on the day of surgery.

One week post op and only lost 3lbs...

People are way to worried about there weight...I understand that the purpose of this surgery is to lose weight but we have these really crazy ideas that we are supposed to lose it like right now...it doesn't work like that. It's a process the weight will come off but it takes time..your real focus should be recovering and getting used to your new life style..I am two weeks out and haven't stepped on the scale once and I won't until I am able to start working out again...I feel like people after getting this surgery forget that it is not a cure it's just a tool...plus any weight lose is good...I hear people complaining about it being 3 weeks out and they only lost 30 pounds?!?!...honestly before surgery have u ever lost 30 pounds in under 3 weeks. Just calm down. U will get there .
  24. How much weight did you lost in these 2 weeks, PittGuy?
  25. Stacie- I am sorry for your lost. I just lost one of my Jack Russells two weeks ago--Checkers was almost 17 and the very first of the six JRTs that we've shared our lives with. PLEASE don't feel bad for eating. It's a manifestation of the grief you are experiencing. You'll gain control of your eating in time but for now you have enough sorrow without worrying about your diet. Rejoice in the 14 years you had with your sweet dog and that she died in your arms knowing you loved her.... Are you familiar with the story of the Rainbow Bridge? I won't copy it here because it always makes my cry, but just google it and you may take comfort from reading it. Laura
