  1. . Lets think about this. I'm sure it was for reasons other than the 45 pounds. It's to get & keep you healthier, right? & to get off the other 73. There's more to this journey. So, focus on that & you'll be ok. In a few weeks or so, you'll be so glad you did this. Hang in there.

    Eating as a vet adaptation

That is true - I never snack or graze, but where to draw the line between those two troublemakers and eating planned meals every 3 hours? Isn't that snacking? Occasionally, I might have an extra 1 ounce of chicken (skewer or meatball) an hour after I eat. If I get hungry and i need to eat something I make sure it is lean protein or it is an energy square. I try and only eat carbs in the morning from my energy squares. Rest of the day is protein in some form. I have been known to put food in my mouth 7x a day. 7x...That is a lot of eating, but it only helps my metabolism. My trainer commented today during our time together that I am leaning out too much ( never heard that before, never ever) and she is going to continue to increase my weight so I do not lose muscle because there is very little fat left for the body to use as energy. While I probably will not increase quantity, I might switch to higher calorie protein sources and shoot for 2500+ calories a day. OMG, that seems like a lot of calories as a sleever, but my trainer specifically said I leaned out a ton in the last few weeks and I would not want to lean out any more. Weight is still 178, but body shape is really changing. Big chest and back, slim waist, strong arms and legs. To follow up on some of the counting comments above, I never count. Never have from the start. I just made a lot of changes in food selections and had some vague idea of how many carbs or proteins, but do not track. Never will either. Just not my style. I would rather just follow a bunch of self imposed rules. And keep things simple.

    Sudden lethargy

I agree with janB23.... I was also very tired. Told the nurse at a recent fill and she got the dr. to order a blood panel. When it came back and my iron was almost non-existent....Starting taking Iron supplements in addition to my multivitiam, calicum and b-complex... I have much more energy and work out twice a day 2 days a week and run/jog/walk 3 miles everyday. you should definately tell your doc or nurse!! BamaMom

How long do we drink protein for?

I was off protein shakes by the 8th week. My surgeon wanted me to get all my protein from food.

Why do people say the things they do?

It may not be that these people are "hating" but maybe envious because it might be a struggle for them to even think about being your size from where they are now. After surgery you will all have something in common, having had the surgery and will have the same experiences with stalls, food intake etc. Know that their attitudes come from a place within them and is not about you. It could be that they feel uncomfortable being bigger than you and feeling exposed in a room where you are. I would hope as they see you are not judging them, then they will accept you. Good luck!!

    Questions

My doctor requires all patients to lose 10 - 15 lbs prior to sugery to make sure we don't have a fatty liver when we go in for surgery. I went to my siminar 2 months before my surgery date. I didn't do the two week pre-op appt. because I lived out of state, so I knew what he said I must lose and started to 'practice' what my life would be like. I didn't cut portions a lot, but I cut out ALL Snacks, I cut out all chips and all bread. The only bread I ate was when we went out to eat, and I'd nibble a little on what they bring to the table. I rode my husband's stationary bike a couple of times a week, not hard rides, but I got up to a mile and a half, I rode for ten minutes. Just these few changes and I lost 23 lbs by the morning of surgery. Wow! I started using a smaller plate, (salad plate) and I used (and still use some times) a small seafood fork. You'll be surprised what you can do!
  7. I'm 2 weeks out from surgery today and am really looking forward to the mushy food stage so that I can have some real substanance. Can I eat some lentils or something else mushy @ an Indian restaurant? What do you think? Any advice on anything with some flavor that I can eat? I'm a spice addict and these two weeks on bland liquids have killed me!
  8. Today I went to see my surgeon (Dr. Echevarria in Tampa). He said I need to lose 20 more lbs before surgery. I am so frustrated! I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and I have had PCOS for years. Anyone with PCOS knows that losing weight is next to impossible. I haven't been able to exercise for a month because I was in so much pain and I had a prolapse. Now I can't exercise at all and all I can do is calorie-restrict. So I am down to 800 calories a day. He said this and then told me I could schedule for surgery. My date is the 22nd of August (this month!). That gives me 18 days to lose 20 lbs. I am not sure if he was trying to scare me into not bingeing or if he actually will turn me away if I only lose 18. To be honest, I almost cried. What am I supposed to do? If I could lose the weight that fast alone I wouldn't want surgery.
  9. You may not be ready for soft foods yet...everyone heals at a different rate. If broth is OK, go back to liquids for another few days or a week. At the beginning I could not drink plain water so I mixed apple juice 50/50 with water and it was much easier to drink. You can try adding some unflavored Unjury protien to the broth too. And yes, this will go away....for some people it takes longer than others.
  10. Hey there everyone, I was banded on March 10 and have not had a pain or gas or anything. Not even sore. Wasn't expecting to come through this good. I am now trying different things to get liquids in for a coulpe of weeks. Glad I made this decision.

Pre-op diet and the smell of food

It is interesting to me. My surgeon has me on the Atkins Diet Phase I. I get nervous because I read so many people are on liquid diets and mine is clearly not. I have re-read and re-read my instructions and even called to be sure I am not messing things up since my surgery is on the 19th. Can anyone tell me the 2 week diet their surgeon has them on? And is anyone else on the Atkins Diet for pre-op?

    New In Knoxville

I'm from Rogersville (about an hour east of you). I don't think there are many people on here from our end of the state, at least not that I have noticed. I am also just starting my journey, but I haven't been to any meetings, groups, or seminars. I have done all of my research online and am getting all of my support on here as well (with the exception of my family who are also supportive.) I think a meeting might be nice, but I'm sure I'd have to drive to K'ville or Johnson City to go to one, so I probably won't. As for your love of food and not knowing about giving that up, I am having some of the same thoughts. I read that you can't have Pasta post-op, and when we ate at the Olive Garden this week, I thought to myself, "Can I really go without this for the rest of my life?" I think that is a natural part of the process. We would be unrealistic if we thought we could do this without mourning some of the things we love from what will be our "former" lives. I think we will be able to have most things "in moderation" with is certainly going to be a new concept to me. I too love food, so moderation is really going to be a new word to my vocabulary, but I'm sure it will be worth it. I have a co-worker who had RnY, and she says, "Nothing tastes as good as this (being thin) feels." I certainly hope I can have that attitude. Good luck in all your efforts. I'd love to hear how your meeting goes tonight. Take Care!

    Horror Stories

I think there is a thread. Mine was far from a horror story. The Bariatric process and personnel were great, but the Anesthesia team broke two of my crowns when they put the breathing tube in or took it out. Later they tried to deny it and even tried to cover it up. Fortunately I had just visited the dentist a week before surgery so she wrote a long letter on what condition my teeth were in before and after surgery. She also stated that it would have taken excessive effort to do that kind of damage. Only then did the hospital relent and pay for the repair of my teeth.

    Fruit

The nutritionist at my surgeons office said, "No, you don't want to make it into a smoothie." She was talking about mixing with Water and adding only Crystal Light packets. I use 2% milk and drop a few berries, SF Torani syrup and/or SF Jello powders into them. Maybe blackberry cheesecake this morning hmmmm? Seriously, if I didn't, I wouldn't be getting enough calories. I'm still under 700 now. 3 or 4 small berries isn't going to kill anything. Just go easy. 1/4 of a banana is plenty to flavor a shake too. Some people use Peanut Butter powder in them. My favorite is to use 4oz of coffee and 2 oz of milk with chocolate Protein powder and chocolate Torani syrup. Sometime I think these nutritionists need to get out more. They are too restrictive sometimes.

    Fruit

I'm 7 weeks out and eat strawberries almost every day. They're in season her in California so I go with it. No problems. So far I've had grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, raspberries, blackberries, pineapple, avocado and bananas. I use the fresh stuff as Snacks and throw the frozen ones into my Protein shakes. Keep in mind I had an Iron stomach before surgery and seem to have an iron sleeve. Nothing bothers it unless I eat dense protein too fast. Yes, there are the carbs, but as Meg said, these are healthy ones. I guess the idea is to not overdo it and eat some protein along with the fruit. I like cheese with mine :-)

    Stalled weight loss

I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one. I was beginning to worry. I was banded 7/6/09 and to date I've lost 15 lbs. I've been working out 3 -4 times a week and still nothing.
  18. My stalls seemed to last 2 weeks. It has happened 3-4 times. Just remember not losing is also not gaining.

    Day 2

Today I have hurt alot more than expected. I may have overdone it walking though, took two walks one of about 200 yards and the other about 1/4-1/3 of a mile. I have been sipping on the same bottle of water since 5 am and it is now after 5pm. I am having to take pain meds about every 4-6 hours and alternating liquid lortab and liquid tylenol. Thankfully I have had no nausea just a strong desire to burp and a couple of hiccups that were terribly painful. I have lost a little over 10 pounds since last week.
  20. Thank you everyone! I am 7 weeks out and would love to be done with these protein drinks. My dr has me on 90 grams of protein which I am thinking is a crazy amount (not to mention unattainable). How much protein is the average patient on?
  21. I get banded next week, I just had a meeting with hospital nutritionist concerning post surgery diet. The recommendation from my practice is 1 week liquids, 1 week pureed/blended foods, 1 week soft foods, week 4 regular foods.

who else started mushies day after surgery?

OK. I am going to blow your minds because this blew MY mind. After all the careful research I had done, I was prepared for the long stretch of liquids, then mushies and FINALLY solids....these were my surgeon's and nut's recommendations: Day 1 and 2 liquids, Day 3 and 4 soft foods including scrambled eggs and TUNA??!!! Day 5---begin to progress to solids! Well... I am day 5 and I have actually eaten (and chewed extremely well) chicken fajitas for dinner! I was so scared, but after my first TINY, well-chewed bite with no pain or problems, I went ahead. I was able to EAT 1/4 cup, though. I am assuming I have restriction due to my stomach still being swollen b/c the surgeon did NOT inflate the band at all. BUT...MIND BOGGLING for sure...I am still extremely careful and cautious and chew my food to mush...and I don't recommend anyone trying this without your surgeon's approval. Just my experience so far.... I did come to the conclusion that they are doing this to let the patient experience what restriction feels like early on because I HAVE restriction right now. I'll lose it in a couple weeks when the swelling is completely gone, I'm sure.

How long do we drink protein for?

I've been using Nectar and Bariatric Fusion protein drinks - they taste really good to me. I only use them as I need to - most of my protein actually comes from food now - chicken, turkey, buffalo meat, fish, etc. My dietician recommends at least 60 g of protein a day and I've been doing that from food alone for the last 4 weeks.
  24. I had vomiting since I first got the Band and once I was stuck so bad but it would not go up or down so my body was still trying to vomit it up and after a while I vomited some blood but was still stuck. Twenty minutes later I was vomiting blood clots. I was at a support group meeting at the time. Freaked my friends out. I called my Doctors office and they gave his cell number as it was a Saturday afternoon. I called him and he told me to get some Water and drink a tiny sip which I did and threw up more blood. Then I continued to take tiny sips for the next 10 minutes and thank God it went down. He told me he would meet me at the office in an hour if I needed to. I am more than an hour away from his office.I felt totally better and did not go in he told me to be on liquids for 3 days and that I had busted some blood vessals and that was what it was. For some reason the first year and a couple of months when I got stuck it always had to come up and out it would NEVER go down no matter how long I waited it out and I waited it out many times the longest was about 8 hours. I could feel it trying to go through the Band but was like stuck in the middle could not go either way. I also suffer from anixiety and the stuck feeling starts me in the direction of a panic attack. I usually have to let my med for anxiety dissolve on my tongue as it would not go down. My Doctor and I could never figure what was wrong. I had a Floro at every office vist, only have 3.8 cc in 10 cc Band. But after a while things just changed and things started going down instead of up. Almost everytime I have ever been stuck was with some type of chicken. I still get stuck some but not like in the first year. I know sometimes it is my fault as I do not chew enough. If I go out and eat with my son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren I can not sit next to the 4 year old as she talks so much I can not chew as she is waiting for an answer. Even with all the throwing up in the beginning I love my band and do not regret getting it. Cheri

    Fruit

Every morning with breakfast I have about 1/4 cup of the jarred ruby red grapefruit sections with its juice. It tastes really refreshing since I can't drink anything for 1/2 hour after that.Strawberries are in seaon here now and I am eating one with lunch every day. I have not had any issues with any fruit I have tried. Sometimes your doctor makes you wait several weeks before you can eat solid wholes fruits, but he will probably want you to take the skin off apples first.
