  1. @melanatedqueen Macros are between 60-80 grams protein, 40-50 grams fat and less than 10 grams carbs. More fat if I can fit it in without eating too much. I don’t know if I was in a stall and it ended the same time I started introducing more fat or if it was the fat that jump started my weight loss. But I certainly didn’t go through all this to eat less than 500 calories a day and not lose weight. Much more satisfied on the keto.

    9-days until surgery..

Thank you all for advice; I'm beginning day 3 of the liquid diet. Sticking to the plan and keeping myself busy as suggested.
  3. I’m new here. I got cleared on Jan 14 and was told it would be 3-4 before the scheduled me and to plan for late February/early March. Well they called today and have a cancellation and I’m scheduled for Feb 10! I had to started my 2-wk pre-op diet today. It suddenly got real!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So 2 months since the surgery and 9 weeks and in total have lost about 28 pounds. Last month was slow, about 10 pounds. Seems like weight will take its sweet time coming off. Slow loser here from what I can see. Though as long as it continues coming off and I can reach the goal, all well. Hoping everyone else is doing well on their ends given we are in Feb now.

    Need to lower A1c

Lizonaplane is exactly right. You are being asked to do something nearly impossible within that time frame. A1C lowers over a 2-3 month period. But very high A1C's (e.g., 10) will lower faster when treatment is provided. Postponing may seem very disappointing but it would give you a chance to drop to an acceptable A1C by being extremely strict with your diet, exercising, and taking any medication prescribed to you. The only other possible option (and maybe not a great one) is to consult with an endocrinologist about whether the endocrinologist believes you could safely undergo the procedure with your current A1C. But he or she would have to consult with and get the approval of your bariatric surgeon for this.

Planning for WK 3 Stage 2

Welcome & congrats on your surgeries. First, as long as you keep your purées thin (use stock, gravy, milk, Mayo, etc. to thin out what you’re blending) you should be ok. The purée should still not be lumpy or contain anything coarse. Think baby food. You can blend a lot of things including tinned fish, poached chicken breast or thigh, boiled eggs, etc. I love soup. You can throw anything in a pot to make a good basic soup. I usually start with the holy trinity (diced onion, celery & carrot) & then add whatever meat &/or, vegetables, legumes, etc. I have. Whilst on purées you’ll have to let the soup simmer for ages to ensure everything is really well cooked & breaking down then blend the life out of it. On the soft food stage you don’t have to worry too much about about blending the soup if it’s been well cooked. Plus it always freezes. Second, don’t be surprised if food you expected you’d enjoy you don’t or your tummy doesn’t like it. Your taste buds & sometimes sense of smell can go haywire for a little while & your tummy can be very fussy. It’s always fine to go back a stage if you find your tummy is not ready for the denser food. We all heal at our own pace. I ate a lot of runny scrambled eggs though it would take 3 days to eat two scrambled eggs. Some people struggle with eggs so be warned just in case. Yoghurt & yoghurt drinks are always a good option during the purée stage. My surgeon recommended 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup though I could always sip on more soup over a longer period of time. But check with your medical team - I’m presuming you can still contact them for advice. You still won’t feel full or your restriction until you get onto solid food. All the best.
  8. Im 8 days post op and I never feel hungry. But I think I get restless which is my body saying to eat., I drink my fairlife protein shake around 8:30am and then every 2-3 hours and eat yogurt. Or 1 cup of creamy soup(tomatoe/vegetable) I drink water in between the 2-3 hour meals. By the time dinner comes around I might have 2 soft boiled eggs or another shake. I have a cup of tea with Splenda to end my night. I’m hoping this stays the course as I start introducing solid foods.
  9. I was sleeved in September of 2015. Weight loss was moderately successful with some regain. High weight was 300, surgery weight 277, got down to 210 and I'm currently at 233. Goal was 185. I have had some issues with GERD like others. Recently though my hiatal hernia has worsened and I am only able to eat very small amounts of food at any given meal. It seems like I'm back to eating like I did 6-8 weeks after my initial surgery. I reached out to my bariatric surgeon and have scheduled an EGD for next week. From what his PA told me if they do a hernia repair they will want to do a revision to RNY at the same time. He said they do this in most all cases. I was also told that their practice (a high volume bariatric surgery facility) does 80-90% RNY these days with very few sleeves. I've noticed that my type 2 diabetes was initially resolved by the sleeve surgery but my A1C has crept back up to 6.0 and my fasting glucose teeters right around 100. I wonder if the revision will resolve the metabolic issues as well as perhaps helping me lose another 20 pounds or so. Does anyone have any insight into the reasoning behind doing the revision with the hernia repair?
  10. @ShoppGirl Did you end up getting one? I did one in June, 3 months before surgery and I'm signed up to get another one next week. Hoping for improvement!

    Need to lower A1c

Are you taking medication like metformin? Are you changing your eating habits? I would say it would be unlikely to lower your A1c significantly in two months as it usually takes between 2-3 months to change it at all. Did your doctor suggest if this would be possible? remember, the surgery is just one part of your journey, and postponing it for a few months until you're in better shape physically will be better in the long run. In the grand scheme of things, a two month postponement is NOTHING

90 Minutes of Cardio Every Morning

I run 2-3 days a week and do CrossFit (combination of strength and metabolic conditioning/cardio) 3-4 days a week, so I am always having some amount of cardio-type exercise.
  13. Tummy tuck (included muscle repair no lipo) on 1/19/22 I am 2 weeks PO tomorrow The good: I felt the pain was less than I imagined. I felt sore (and still do slightly) of course but it was far less than I anticipated. The horrible pouch, AKA Joey, is GONE! What a relief! Good riddance to Joey! At my appointment yesterday I was told I am healing VERY fast and ahead of the curve. They said I look more like 4+ weeks. Everything looks good! I’m pleased already with my results even with the above the suture line swelling mid line. The bad: Constipation experience 2-3 days post op (I’ve blocked it out). I won’t get graphic but dear lord this was not good! The pain of this while being sore and stitched up was horrible! Yes, I took all the stuff yo prevent this. However, each time I get surgery this happens to me! I’d rather give birth! The drains…. I knew I would hate them and I did. One drain leaked from the site for 7 days. Once that was removed it helped a lot. The second drain (non leaker) was just removed yesterday so I am feeling like a human! Indigestion and gas have been an issue. It is quite unpleasant to be bloated with when you are stitched up. Advice: You need a person to help the first few days for sure. Changing dressings, emptying drains initially would have been impossible for me if I didn’t have my husband. Don’t try this alone! Get a recliner. We already had an electric one so it helped me a lot. I sleep in it and don’t think I could possibly sleep anywhere else as I am NOT normally a back sleeper. The recliner helps adjust your position so you can find the sweet spot where you don’t hurt. Drink lots of fluids and eat foods that do not create gas. Be kind to yourself. If you are like me, you have wanted this surgery for a long time. Don’t try to do too much so that you cause a complication. Have a firm pillow at hand so you can press on your tummy when trying to get up in the beginning or sneezing/coughing (ugh). I hope this helps someone. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
  14. Hello, Newbie here! My wife and I travelled to Turkey from the UK last week and both had Gastric Sleeve. Although we both feel "hungry" we have kept to everything we were told. The next stage is approaching and we look forward to some sustenance. Eggs and pureed veg seems to be the plan and some homemade soup. Any recipe ideas for us? And talking of soups what portion sizes should we be aiming for? We are on Day 8 and I am taking a "mug" of Vegimte/Marmite with relative ease. Thanks for letting me (and the boss) join. Lots of questions in the future

    Determining Goal Weight

I did. I was 235 lbs at the start of my 2 wk pre-op diet (I’m 5’2”). My surgeon said losing 60% of my excess weight would consider me as a “success”…so for me, that meant a 60 lb weight loss, based on a BMI 25 “normal” weight. Anything over that was just gravy. But I chose 120 as an arbitrary goal weight only because it was in the mid range of normal BMI for my height (meaning a 115 lb weight loss).. By the time I got to 127, I decided that was enough as I didn’t like how my face was looking so gaunt. Ended up getting down as low as 109 anyway. These days, I hover around 115-120 and have been basically within that range for over 2 years. My actual surgery was 3+ years ago. Funnily enough, I actually look less gaunt now than I did immediately after weight loss phase despite weighing less today. Long story short, your body and your lifestyle will determine your final weight, goals are just numbers. What’s important, in my humble opinion, is to be at peace with whatever weight you feel good at AND can maintain. It may not be worth the loss in quality of life to achieve some magic number. Goals are great, but being able to adapt and accept is even better. Good Luck! ❤️
  16. I am also 2/3 - nearly done with this preOp diet.
  17. I have had problems like you from the get go. Its quite difficult to get to all your protein and water in. At 9 weeks out, I have not, ever reached my goals. I cant do the shakes or drinks either. I have tried all the ones available in the Uk. My dietician says just eat what you can. I still aim for 6 small snack meals a day. Every week I try something different, mostly its a fail but some times I am surprised by a win. Tuna mayo on 2 small crackers went down a treat. Win win. Yesterday I made Mussels in a Thai broth. The 8 small, well chewed mussels went down fine but the broth had to wait to be eaten separately later. Animal meats, no matter how well cooked are still a no no. Bread of any kind - not on your nelly. Vegetables other than in a soup form and in place of a snack meal - no room at the inn. A typical days eating is Breakfast - 75gms yogurt or 30 gms porridge. Lunch - Surimi sticks or a egg mayo. Snack 1 - mushroom soup. Dinner - pate or tuna mayo and crackers. Snack 2 Cheese. Snack 3- fruit ice lolly. I drink milky coffee [ because I am allowed] I have given up on the gummy vitamins and soluble calcium, both give me nausea. I replaced them with tablet form ones. On the plus side, I am less wobbly and able to do more everyday. on the down side I haven't lost any weight for a month. I see my dietician this week so I will see what she says
  18. I'm on day 2, and I'm annoyed. LOL. I have a migraine, and I'm tired, ugh. when you think of it - its a 4 week diet, because 2 weeks afterward!
  19. @MAQ You brought up a great point. I’m on low carb/600 calories, 7 weeks out from revision vsg to rny, and my weight loss has been sooooo slow! Only 5 pounds lost in January! I don’t know what to do and my surgeon’s office has been less than helpful. Since I’m in ketosis, I thought the weight would fall off. I didn’t wanna eat too much fat that’s why I didn’t do Keto and figured I have more than enough stored body fat to use. May I ask what your daily macros are How many grams of fat, carbs, protein do you eat daily?
  20. Hi Kurt, I know how you feel I spent 7 weeks curled up in a ball on my sisters couch feeling like was/ wanted to die. I couldnt/ didn't want to eat or drink. If you go back through my old posts you will see how bad I was feeling. Just try to eat and drink what you can. I couldn't have shakes either because of they way they effected me. I lived on KFC mash potato and gravy then a few chicken nuggets. I was drinking protein water to get my protein in but at this stage don't worry about calories etc because seriously the tiny amount you are eating it's not going to matter. Could your vitamins be causing you issues I know mine did. I also found when I ate later in the evening I felt better in the morning. 1 night a had a maccas sundae and felt amazing the next morning so good in fact I had breakfast. I also found I felt the worst in the mornings and normally struggled to get anything in. I did seek out a psychologist which helped but I think it's just a time thing trust me it gets better. Hope you feel better soon ((hugs)) oh about the 4-5 month mark is when I started to feel better and yes I cried multiple times a day during that period going back to work helped me a lot too got me back into my routine. Ok I will shut up now but feel free to reach out

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Fellow 2/3 here I've been on low carb but not all liquids for 2 weeks, wasn't too bad, wasn't awesome though! Tomorrow I switch to liquid only for the days before surgery, so that'll be fun 😬 I had to go get covid tested today and that came back negative, I'm so relieved because I was super worried I'd be positive randomly. Did a bunch of other pre-op stuff today too, paperwork and consent forms all that jazz. It's finally feeling real, I'm so scare-cited!

I agree about not stocking up on shakes. I still have some from my surgery almost 3 months ago. I put a couple ounces in decaf coffee for extra protein. I seldom want to drink a shake since I can eat food now. I still have sugar free jello and pudding too. I only made it once.

It is great to be thinking about this ahead of time! I agree with Splenda above, taste can change. I started drinking protein shakes a few weeks before surgery. I found two that I liked. After surgery, I have only been able to drink protein shakes on two occasions. They made me vomit. I do use Syntrax Nectar unflavored protein powder, to add to Crystal Light, oatmeal, pancakes, etc.
