Need practical advice (long)
BLERDgirl replied to amyecpa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@samuelsmom - I never had a clear liquid stage pre or post op. My practice has a manual. It's not online, but they have one. I am one of those exceptions being a vegetarian and having allergies. Many people come here and vent, when they need to go back to their nutritionist and say, "This isn't working for me." The answer may be "suck it up" or it may be "try almond/soy/rice/hemp milk, try soy Protein powder." It may even be a third option I haven't thought of. Regardless unless you go back or call your nutritionist you won't know. -
Need practical advice (long)
samuelsmom replied to amyecpa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@amyecpa I was a week out on Thanksgiving Day and the dietitian told me I could have pureed turkey so I did! I couldn't have much but i really enjoyed it. I also ate a lot of vegetarian chili which is easy to mash up. I was fortunate and could drink the shakes and enjoy Greek yogurt. Good Luck to you. -

Bob's red mill makes a plain soy isolate. You can use that to get in your protein. No sugar or other additives. Just protein. It will mix with soups or broth. You also should call & discuss this with your nutritionist. I had to make adjustments because I am a vegetarian with multiple food allergies. Speaking with my nutritionist helped me develop a plan that worked. -
Another protein shake question
della street replied to Wannabeskinnie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Wannabeskinnie I, too, was very confused about this -- I'm one week today post-op from a bypass. I really had no idea about Protein shakes -- what I've figured out that works for me (at a very early stage anyway) is this: Almond milk (I'm vegetarian; unsweetened Almond Milk has no sugars) Vega One Protein powder, chocolate PB powder (I'd never heard of it, but it's powdered peanut butter; avail at a store like Sprout's, Whole Foods, and I even saw it at costco yesterday) Chia seeds for Fiber Use the right amounts for whatever your NUT says you need in terms of protein, cards, etc. I blend that stuff, then add about 8 oz of finely crushed ice that I get from my local Sonic drive-in. Blend again, pour the right amount (I've been making enough for two at a time, since I'm on soft foods plus two protein shakes/day right now...) It is DELISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

Hello Michigan! ...is this thing on?
MissMae replied to AhnaLucille's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The pre-op appointment was good. Paid a whole lot of money, got a body wash to use 3 times before surgery, and then went over specifics for before and after surgery- no bowel cleanse or catheter, woo hoo! My aunt had a sleeve done a little over a year ago and the day before surgery she had to do a bowel cleanse and during surgery she had a catheter. Yikes. The pre-op diet is a challenge but not because I want to eat other things. I'm more concerned with making sure I eat the right things and enough protein. I am a vegetarian so it has been a little trickier. I almost feel like it would be easier to just do 2 drinks as meal replacements and then one high protein meal for dinner. Every surgeon is different. -
Ok so I am doing very well and entering week 2. During weeks 2, 3, and 4, I am supposed to to puree all of my foods. So is that basically just throwing the food in a blender and griding up as much as possible? Kind of like "pre-chewing" your food? LOL I decided to go vegetarian so it should be pretty easy to puree all my foods. It will mostly be legumes and the such.

Someone recommended America's Test Kitchen's Cooking for Two. I got a copy and cause it makes smaller portions. I also got a couple of vegan soul food cookbooks to really learn how to cook veggies and make them taste great. I am thinking of going vegetarian after the surgery. One of my cousins did because after surgery she had a hard time eating meat.

Protein Supplements?
BLERDgirl replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Prior to WLS I was the same way. I aimed for 50gms of Protein and actually loss weight at that amount. Of course being a vegetarian it's the first question everybody asks you. I use to use it as my breakfast/pre gym drink. I use it as supplement now because of the sleeve requirements. I too do a morning shake. Sometimes I just add it to my morning coffee. After that I eat regular food for the rest of the day. -

What can't be? Can you puree shredded cheese with refried beans?
anaxila replied to monopoly2015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat a ton of refried Beans and cheese: 1/4c vegetarian refried beans plus 2T reduced-fat mexican cheese equals 3g of fat and 7g of Protein. I don't puree them, just heat them up in the microwave and stir the melted cheese into the beans. The beans are soft enough that they break down easily with chewing and I haven't had a problem from not-pureeing. I also make chicken taco meat and puree it with a 50/50 mix of taco meat and salsa. 1/4c of the taco meat plus 2T reduced-fat mexican cheese equals 2g of fat and 14g of protein. I personally puree the salsa because the kind I use includes onions and I want them to be as tiny as possible in order to go down easily. -
It really depends on you. I didn't have a pre-op diet. I was just told to cut back on carbs & fat and increase my Protein. I wanted this surgery to go well so I did just that. As for post-op, it's been pretty easy. My biggest challenge was finding a Protein Drink that worked with my multiple allergies and vegetarianism.

My relationship with food is much friendlier than it used to be. We had a bit of a love-hate relationship before in that I really liked eating, but I really hated the fact that doing so made me fat. Kind of like in that Austin Powers movie..I eat because I'm sad and I'm sad because I eat...or something along those lines. Not to blame my parents, who are wonderful people, but we had a strict "clean your plate" policy, so I always felt guilty about wasting food. As a result, I never wanted food to go to waste, so I would eat it, and then I would end up eating everything in the house. Food taunted me. Now though, I can eat a few bites of whatever I want and because I physically cannot clear my plate, so to speak, there is no longer the urge to do so. If I want to have a bit or two of pie, then I do that, and unlike before, I don't have any really interest in finishing the pie later. The fact that nothing is off limits anymore purely for the sake of being on a diet has been freeing. That being said, it is also probably helpful that my sleeve is a bit of a B. She just does not like food at all, especially the good stuff. So, I have been classically conditioned to understand that I can enjoy literally maybe two bites of rich food and that is it, or I will spend the next 20 minutes barfing, panting, and having hot flashes. So, this again reinforces the idea that I can eat what I want in teeny tiny portions and there is no need to keep eating, or ultimately I will be miserable. In terms of taste, I have always had a sweet tooth and I still do, but unfortunately sugars also tend to make me sick and I just generally don't eat them often anymore. I went through a phase where I craved steak...I never cared much about meat before. I was hardly a vegetarian, but it just wasn't my first choice of food. I had this one steak dish probably everyday for about a month. Right now I am 16 months out and I feel like my relationship with food is like an old boyfriend that I care less and less about as time goes on. First, I really missed him, then I tried to replace him, then I mourned him and my inability to find a suitable replacement, and now, eh, I can take him or leave him. I eat when I'm hungry, but I don't really enjoy food in the same voracious capacity as I used to. Hope that gives you a little insight...

Try vegan/vegetarian food. I might be weird but I love the Loma Linda/Worthington canned Proteins. My favorites are Little Links, Tender Bits, Redi-Burger and Linkettes. And there are a lot of other brands. I like Boca Burgers and Boca "chicken" patties too. Ask around to see what other people really like. -

African American vsgers!

I haven't experienced any hair loss, but I am menopausal and wear locs. I was already taking Biotin before surgery. What I have noticed is that my fingernails are shot. They constantly split and break off. I just cut them down yesterday. I've found a vegetarian friendly supplement I may try because I really dislike fake nails. @@Redefined - There are many different protocols and food plans. I was allowed oatmeal on purred stage as well. -
@@MDB9/16/14 - I was sleeved on 9/18/14. We might be able to help you a bit more if you could give us an example of what a typical food day for you is like. If you want to friend me on MFP my username is Milaxx. I'm not sure how much help viewing my diary will be because I'm vegetarian, but you could probably swap some of my Proteins for lean meats.

Homeopathy/Naturopathy to help with recovery?
BLERDgirl replied to Shadowcub's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
What exactly do you plan to use them for? I personally have no issues with homeopathy. My favorite nutritionist was a homeopath as well. Perhaps I am in the minority because I had no issues recovering post op. My doctor already had me on a regimen of Vitamins and supplements and I honestly didn't feel a need for additional ones. If you want less "cluttered" so to speak Protein supplements you can get both whey isolates or soy isolates in powder form to use instead. I am a vegetarian and I use Isopure naked whey. I can add that to my morning tea or coffee, greek yogurt, or vegetable broth/soup. I'm not familiar with most of the supplements you have listed. (Arnica, Belle Perenis, Calendula, Gota Kola extract, and Staphisagria). What are they for? I get the rest of my vitamins from my multi-Vitamin. So far my bloodwork has been perfectly fine. I notice you are in PA. I'm in Philly. Where are you and where are you having your surgery done? -
Things a Vegetarian should know before getting the sleeve?
BLERDgirl replied to nolongerhere's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I was hesitant to bring salads back in as well. I started slowly. I was 6 weeks out and I made a simple salad of romaine, Beyond meat chickenless strips and olive oil. I took my time and ate it slowly. I'm now 4 mths out and I do still have a Protein shake for Breakfast but that was my routine before WLS. I'm now back to eating pretty much all the same foods I ate before WLS. The only exception is I haven't re-introduced pastas and "white" carbs back into my diet. I've had brown rice once. I'm now re-introducing whole grains like farro and quinoa back in. While my nutritionist is no pro-vegetarian. She cringed when I told her I've been thinking of going vegan eventually. She is not against me. She has been really good about working with me to figure out a balanced diet. -
Things a Vegetarian should know before getting the sleeve?

Dietician Meeting -- What questions would you ask?
BLERDgirl replied to heel5man's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask about things that matter to you. I am a vegetarian. My first question was what were her thoughts on plant based diets? I also have multiple food allergies and can't eat artificial sweeteners and food dyes. I needed to know we could work around these things. I found many dietitians point to the many flavored Protein drinks. Some programs even have deals with some of the bigger names. None of them would have worked for me. It took doing some homework but I have found that Isopure makes an unflavored whey protein isolate powder and Bob's Red Mill makes a soy isolate Protein Powder. I haven't tried the Bob's Red Mill although I do use a lot of their products. I do use the Isopure and like that is can be mixed in both hot and cold beverages. That sickly sweet taste often leaves many burnt out on Protein shakes. -
@BLERDgirl. I do have omeprazole but I haven't taken it. I will try that. Just a quick question for you. Given the diet restrictions that we need to follow, how do you get your Protein as a vegetarian? I will have a giant garden this spring/summer and I am interested in finding out how you are doing this. I know I can add veggies to everything which is great, but just curious

I'm leaving Friday! I got the room fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Do you know there is a coffee maker cookbook?! Lol. All about how to survive in a hotel using the coffee maker to cook in. I have mapped a store. I won't have a rental car. I'm walking everywhere. Training is 12 hours a day with 1.5 for lunch. The training center is vegetarian only! Dairy and eggs okay. Ugh. I can do it. Thanks for all the tips.
