Band being taken out due to "pseudo-achalasia"
melissa808 replied to sleeveee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my band removed in July '14 and the sleeve done in Nov '14. Couldn't be happier. All the stuck feelings I used to get with the band, the choking and the slime are gone. I definitely had success with the band initially but it slipped upward once and I had it revised. One year later slipped again. By the second time the doctor said this tool was just not cooperating with my body. He did say that my stomach needed to heal after having the band removed before doing the sleeve so I would check with your doctor about that. I have lost about 50 pounds so far and feel great. -
I have a question for the ladies... I have a problem with ovarian cysts so knowing Im getting ready to have surgery, my doctor took me off the pill and gave me the depo shot because the pill can cause blood clots. But today he told me I might have a problem because the depo shot bypasses is the liver and stomach... so what am I supposed to do?

I am 14 days post-op. But the bariatric Vitamins they have me on are so hard to get down. They are huge, and have to dissolve in your mouth. I have to take them 3 times per day. I can barely get them down. They are chalky and dry. I gag just waiting for them to dissolve. My sister had bypass about 10 yrs ago, and all she had to take was 3 chewable childrens Flintstones. Decision Time - GERD relief?
Djmohr replied to brattsr2cute's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@brattsr2cute Like you I had severe Gerd and was on the max dosage of nexium 3 times per day. I also coughed uncontrollably every single day for a year and a half before I had gastric bypass. From the moment I woke up after surgery my Gerd is completely gone! I have absolutely no heartburn and can eat things that used to have me walking the floors all night long. Cucumbers, green peppers, spicy foods, pretty much anything. I take no medication at all for Gerd, it was stopped 30 days after my bypass. I am down 141lbs and about 3lbs from my ideal weight. I weight 168lbs and started at 310, 16 months ago! Bypass is the best thing I have ever done for myself for som many reasons but the biggest ones are health related. No more diabetes, Gerd, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, stage 3 kidney disease and anemia. All in remission! Don't be afraid to move forward! -

continuing on to duodenal switch
RickM replied to tntransplant06's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is the classic reason for two staging the DS. However, if one is getting the VSG alone, with the idea that if it fails it can (relatively) easily be revised into a DS, then what I posted applies - do it before you suffer any significant weight regain. The best results, in my doc's experience, is to do the DS in one stage, or if necessary for surgical risk reasons, a planned 2 stage procedure. Doing a later revision from something else, including the VSG, doesn't usually yield as good of a result, though certainly better than whatever failed the first time. -
How long did it take for you to heal?
iamshazza replied to Wendydarling19's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was back to work in a week after my band to sleeve revision and also had gallbladder out. Not a whole lot of pain for me either after the first few days. I work in the office 3 days a week and I work at home 2 days. Also desk job. I could've taken more time but didn't really feel Like I needed it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I had gastric bypass on Tuesday 5/20 and think I have been recovering pretty well. My big concern is that I still feel hunger pains. I thought that was supposed to go away?

Trying to decide...
mickally replied to GADeltaDawn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the vertical sleeve in October 2013. Now I'm having a revision to gastric bypass because I can not get the reflux under control. Had I known what I know now about reflux and the sleeve not being the best choice I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from a second surgery. -
Port through skin
mominkansas replied to Crystalc2002's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can feel my port but not quite see it right now. I had a band revision a few weeks ago and was told not to move it but was given the option free of charge since I was being opened up. I decided to skip it. I am terrified of a port infection and had to have my flipped port reanchored a few months after my surgery. If it bothers you I would look into it otherwise as my doc said there is no telling how the port will look in the new place. -
Some patients after gastric bypass will suffer from Iron deficiency anemia and may require iron supplementation. If you suffer from this, it would not be a good idea to donate blood. If your blood levels are normal it is not a problem to donate . Hope this helps ?

2Bsmaller18 replied to betterL8thanever's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had read somewhere (not sure how accurate it was) that the bypass procedure was actually meant to treat reflux not weight loss initially. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Other research I came across showed stats like 20-30% of sleeve patients have reflux issues post surgery. Not sure if this is long term, severe etc. verse the study I read said bypass patients only a small percent reported new or worse reflux symptoms but most reported improvement. -

My dad is scheduled for pre op with Dr. Richardson on Wednesday for a bypass. He hasn't actually seen him yet, but I do know that he is highly recommended and my dad is traveling 80 miles to have him do it rather than using the doctors around Baton Rouge, because his cardiologist and PCP think so highly of Dr. Richardson. Go see him and let me know what you think. -
14 Mos post op, from 308 to 174
nprcowboy replied to nprcowboy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The positive which relates to WLS, is they caught it on the standard liver biopsy they do during these surgeries. Her rare cancer usually goes undiagnosed for 5 to 7 years unless they catch by accident. So her bypass helped us catch it much earlier. Even after they caught it on the biopsy they couldn't find it and went 8 months without finding primary tumors which were in original scans when they did her surgery but oncologist missed it. Could only imagine had it not been for catching it by chance in standard WLS biopsy how long it would have been or developed before diagnosed. As even after they were tipped off by chance took 8 months to correctly diagnose and find the cancer. So the fact she has cancer sucks, but without the WLS could have had a far less chance of survival. -

Thank you, thank you, thank you for these comments! You have all made me feel so much better about my decision and I appreciate that so much. To answer your question, I have only considered the sleeve because of having gastroparesis. I’ve had so many abdominal surgeries in my life that I was told to avoid any more of them...until my symptoms became so bad that I turned to the only thing that is supposed to help or cure it: the sleeve. So not sure about switching to the bypass. I need to explore further the possibilities of the sleeve. But you all have helped tremendously in giving me info to explore and question before I make this big decision. You have confirmed that this is an important topic and something my surgeon should have—most definitely—talked to me seriously about. Again, THANK YOU! -
90% Getting Ready to Do the Sleeve! Some Questions!
heep replied to heep's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone! Thank u so much for your replies. I kept re-reading them when in doubt! So my surgery is booked for Tuesday March 24th. I am scared/ excited... don't know what to feel??? I am doing it in Syria because I am originally from there, and this doctor has performed hundreds of surgeries. I am not worried about the doctor or the quality of care, I am just worried about complications. From what I have been reading, is that some people get complications.. and some people don't... I was trying to find out who would be more at risk at getting a complication... for example, why do you get that reflux thing in your esophagus, it sounds so terribly painful! Also, why would you get 'dumping'? I know dumping is for people with bypass, but some users on here said they experienced it ! I like to know my risks before going in, and mentally preparing, but it seems like these complications are 'random'. Am I wrong? -
I wad planning on the sleeve ib early December and cruise is booked for January 22nd. Found out that I might HAVE to have the gastric bypass and I wanted to hear about your post op 4-5 weeks out to see what concerns I need to prepare for. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

"Re-sleeving surgery?" Is that really a "thing?"
Babbs replied to WLSResources/ClothingExch's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After some Google Fu, it doesn't seem possible to "re sleeve" unless the sleeve was too large to begin with or has stretched considerably (although I don't see how that is possible). Seems the doctors either revise to an RNY or a DS, both of which also effect the absorption of nutrients by re routing things. -
Sleeve Forum is wrong about the band
Instyle98 replied to Creekwood's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Interesting! Yesterday when I went for my second fill, I mentioned this forum to the person who did my fill. She told me that she had been banded for 5 years and in the beginning had come here to check it out and she didn't stay because she said it seemed as if there were a lot of angry people here. Sometimes it certainly seems like that, but I have found a lot of very friendly helpful folks who seem to have their heads in the right place. I think some people are naysayers regardless of what the subject matter is or just like to think they no better than everyone else. The band is not for some people, just like gastric bypass or the sleeve is not for everyone. I think it also depends on where you are at emotionally in your life. I know someone (she's gone from a very close friend to frienemy) who had gastric bypass several years ago and any time an overweight person is having issues in their life (not necessarily weight) or not her response is always, "Why don't you go get weight loss surgery?" She likes to think she knows everything about everything and if everyone listened to her they wouldn't have any problems. Her first question to me after my surgery (I wasn't even a week out) was, "So...have you thrown up yet?" When I asked her why would I do that she responded with some explanation of how she just has to push the limit if she is told she shouldn't do something. Crazy huh? I didn't even bother to explain the differences in her surgery compared to mine. It seemed like a waste of my energy. I'm sure you're wondering how she did with her weight loss - she did good for awhile, but has never been thin and is still considerably overweight. She considers her surgery a success. She's one of the biggest reasons why I decided to try the Lap Band since it was done as an outpatient, is reversible, less costly and doesn't involve re-routing my innards. While the recovery was easier in many ways, the daily living part is a little more difficult since she seems to be less restricted when it comes to what she can eat and of course the weight loss is slower. I don't even know why I posted this! LOL! But I don't really talk to anyone else about my WLS. I have not made it public - except here. I asked her not to tell anyone, but knowing her, someone else out there knows. -
Look him up on health grades. Ask about attending a support group where his patients go, you will meet people and find out the real deal. Not sure what stories are scaring you - but it is a serious surgery and there is a risk of complications. If you can lose weight and keep it off without surgery - that is safer. Me, I couldn't do that and weighing 300+ was killing me slowly so I was willing to take the risk. Sleeve surgery has slightly lower complication rate then the gastric bypass however. I picked a surgeon with lots of experience, and with a good reputation and then had the good luck too - no complications. It is a risk though.

Weightloss...
James Marusek replied to meaghan_rny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After surgery, individuals loose weight at different rates. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So adhere to the program guidelines. Since you are at 3 months, there is one thing you might try if you haven't already. Your daily protein requirement is met by a combination of the amount of protein you obtain from food combined with the amount of protein from protein supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). Right after gastric bypass surgery, the volume of food you consume is minuscule (2 ounces) per meal. But as you get further along, the meal volume increases. Therefore you have a very important option available to you. As a result, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op. This is important because protein shakes contain calories. If you can reduce your caloric intake, then you can end a stall. At least that was the approach that I used and it worked for me. -

I am brand new here...advice, support appreciated
Yorkie Fan replied to kmr's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome KMR! I can tell you, as well as many others, that I would not go with the band. This is from my own personal experience. I currently have my band and am in the process of getting a revision to the sleeve. I have had numerous complications and to this day I am in pain constantly. I would recommend that either you self-pay for what you know is right for you or hang in there until BCBS of MA adds it to the approved list of surgeries. As far as insurance goes, I would definitely appeal to them with lots of evidence. You never know what they are going to say. I would look on the internet for appeals specifically geared towards the sleeve. That will help you with your appeal. Feel free to email. I'm more than glad to share my personal experience with my band. Also check out the band to sleeve revisions section tons of good information. Good Luck! Let me know if I can be of any help. @@JamieLogical thanks! I've heard sleeve also limits your hunger hormone, but with the stomach still there, I wonder if the same effect happens with bypass. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App
