Surgery in Mexico
Threetimesacharm replied to sissy01's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I had two surgeries in Mexico. Who is your surgeon? What company are you going with? Bariatric Pal has a great set-up for surgery. I used Dr Zavalza the second time and he was fantastic!! -
You know, it's been a wonderful day. Last week I found out from one of the "higher ups" that they were dropping all allegations against me at work! Thank God for witnesses!! While I am truly grateful for my job, I am still a bit pissed off that it went this far. One more meeting on Thursday and it should officially be over. Seventeen years, with 13 of it being at the same position and they treated me like dog doo. The best news is I also had my surgeon consultation today and it went great! After having to cancel my appt last month, I was happy to find out that as of yesterday, my surgeon of choice, Dr. Faulkenbery of Southwest Bariatrics, now uses the Realize Band which is what I wanted! He seemed to like their support site very much. Tomorrow I make appts for the blood work/EKG, the psych appt., the exercise appt and then the nutritional counseling. I am hoping to have it all done by the end of the month so I can have the surgery by the middle of June. And if my day couldn't get better...I didn't even get charged in the parking garage !

what did you wear in the hospital?
4sweeties replied to dolphintattoo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The gowns come in larger sizes on most bariatric floors so that helped me feel more comfortable. And you can ask for 2 (one on backwards and everything gets covered) I still had the IV on so I didn't do the pajamas over my head, arm, but I should have put underwear on. On no, I do not remember doing that. OOPS. I'm not sure when they pulled cathedar out but that was taped to my thigh. I would pack pjs and see how you feel. Always better to have. -

Hi I would recomend you to view a video on you tube called Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy: My Story and Basic Bariatric Information From Erika Jones. In my opinion this video helps you to know the best surgery option for you. Good Luck.

So... I've been trying to get as much information as I can about surgery. I have attended two support/informational meetings. I had my first consult with the bariatric clinic here in Oakland, CA.... completed my psychiatric eval and met with the dietician. I am scheduled on the 11th to have my upper GI exam... waiting for 2nd consult and surgery consult.:cursing: I am hopeful and excited about this journey. I picked up a couple of books and have probably joined every online support group I could find, specific to lap band surgery. I've trying to make a serious effort work out more so that I can have successful surgery and recovery.... Anyway, until next time....:hungry:

Feeling awful 6 weeks post op!
Arabesque replied to Arancini's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Agree with @vikingbeast. You need to take a big step back. You’re stressed & emotional which only enhances those cravings. You crave the foods which offered you comfort in the past & you crave the familiar of being able to eat what you want, when you want it. And the more you worry the more anxious you become. You may find a therapist who specialises in supporting bariatric patients very helpful. Ask your surgeon for a recommendation. Constipation is part of the journey. I tried to keep on top of mine by taking Benefibre at least every second day, keeping my fluid intake up & taking a stool softener if I got to day 3 or 4 without movement. I also ate very mild instant rolled oats from purée stage. Took me days to eat a full serve but it was good fibre. You may need an enema since it’s been 15 days or a visit to the hospital for assistance. Being constipated does make it seem you’ve stopped losing or have gained. Get rid of it & your weight will be lower very quickly & you’ll feel much better. Stalls are very common. They can last 1 - 3 weeks, sometimes more. And you can experience a number of them as you’re losing. The first usually occurs around week 3 give or take. You just have to ride them out. They’re just your body taking a time out to come to terms with your weight loss. Changes to your sense of smell & taste are also common. They usually are temporary but how long it lasts is individual. Are there specific foods that upset you more you can avoid? The strong body odour is from your body being in ketosis - fat burning. It’s like every bodily secretion reeks. It passes too. I took deodorant, toothbrush, tooth paste & mouth wash & body wipes to work for refreshes during the day. I was someone who frequently skipped meals in an effort to lose weight (did that for 40+years) & tried all those very low calorie diets including one I did several times that was only 500 calories a day. I still lost all my weight & more. Stick as close to your plan as you can. It may take you a little longer to reach a stage recommendation for calories, portion size &/or foods you can eat but that’s ok. You’ll get there. -
Congrats on the weight loss! I've been a member of bariatric pal since my surgery. Haven't followed it a whole lot since then. Looking to get some support as I initially lost 70 pounds, but have regained 30! It has me freaked out! However, my own fault here...I started a private practice (I'm a psych nurse practitioner) and have been so focused on work I have not been exercising at all. Also went back to some bad eating habits. Trying to get back on track and get into a regular routine of my daily 2-3 mile walks.

Dr. Schrope, Dr. Gritsus, Dr. Bagloo
papoose replied to Annah's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I used Dr. Gritsus. He is a very good Dr. His staff is very good. He is very quiet, he doesn't talk much. You can ask him questions and he will answer. You can call his office and he will return your calls. He has 2 offices, one in Paramus (where I go) and in Pequannock. He did my lapband surgery in 2010. All lapband patients come to the Paramus office because that is where the fluoroscope machine is. At the time when I was looking to do weight loss surgery. He was the only one my insurance accepted and the hospitals he does the surgery in are bariatric certified. You need to write a list of questions and then sit with each of the doctors and interview them and pick your choice. See who you feel the most comfortable with. I have heard good review from all three of the Drs. you have chosen. Good luck to you. -
Will I ever be normal again?
esskay77 replied to Sheesh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends on what "normal" is. No, you won't be able to eat everything you used to eat. That's what got you here. But, you will be able to have a wide variety of food that can taste great. If you prefer breads and pastas and pizza, that sort of thing, then you are not going to be doing that anymore. But stick with lean Proteins, some veggies, a small bit of carbs/grains and you are good. Luckily, you can't eat as much anymore anyway. Get a bariatric cook book--they are filled with tasty recipes! -
Today was my last monthly appointment of the six required by insurance so my doctor's office will be submitting to insurance in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed. Surgery is scheduled for July 18. We also used today as my pre-op appointment and went through everything. Thanks to this forum I felt very prepared to have this meeting and came prepared with lots of questions. One thing I have noticed is how much variety there is on surgeon preferences. Here are some highlights of how my surgeon handles things: Pre-op Diet: One week liquid only, 800-1000 calories and 60-80 grams of Protein. Incisions-uses steri strips so no need for stitches to be removed Does not use a drain unless necessary based on how things go, averages one every two years so low likelihood Does the leak test during surgery rather than next day before you go home. Says he would rather know during so can fix right away than have to put me under again to fix. Should be released by 3-4pm day after Will be released with pain pills, anti-nausea pills and pill to help prevent ulcers Will not give bariatric specific Vitamins. He said blood work will determine any deficiencies over time but as long as eating a proper diet a multi-Vitamin should be sufficient Can't wait!!

I'm so sorry for your situation. It's hard enough going through this difficult process, and even more so when you don't have the support of family and friends. Sadly and unfortunately far too often, the word "family" is exercised in name only. I'm lucky enough to have the full support of mine. I wish you too had that kind of strength to rely upon. Support is the one thing that every bariatric program stresses as the key foundation for a successful wls outcome. I didn't fully understand why myself until I began my own journey. With everything you are dealing with right now you might have to consider putting it off for awhile, as unpleasant as that would be. The only other suggestion I can offer is that maybe you could find a support group in your area that could perhaps offer you other options to explore. It's hard, I know, being so close to the one thing you want most, only to have it remain cruelty just out of reach. I truly hope you can find the answers you are seeking. Good luck!

Low BMI with excess skin.
theshrinkingchef replied to noellegz1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Start taking collagen now. I take jarrosil. They have liquid collagen you can take before and after. If you get the hair skin and nails kind it will help with hair loss(sometimes happens because of vitamin deficiencies). Wear compression garments, especially working out. It will help with gravity tugging on skin. Go to vedette or similar sites that offer post plastic surgery garments. They'll have them for bariatrics. There's a great moisturizer...shikai with borage. It is a great moisturizer. Try dry brushing and sulfate free cleaners, such as shikai. It should help. Good luck! -

Dentures & The Band
mufasas-mom replied to mufasas-mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yahoo - just called the insurance company and it is covered - no need to do another 6 months or anything - so I just have to confirm with True Results to switch surgeons to one that performs the sleeve and I should be good to go....phew. after talking with the nurse at the insurance company who specialized in bariatric care - she agreed 100% that if I am not able to chew my food throughly NOW, then it will be much worse if I got the band, as I'd be miserable and since the insurance only covers 1 surgery per lifetime, I better get one that will work for me. I feel so much better...again - thanks for everyone's support!! -
Pessimistic Psychologist
stpatty replied to stpatty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
She introduced herself as a bariatric pain management psychologist. I guess that's what I get for accepting an 'alternate psychologist' to clear me for this requirement. -
I have 3 bottles of Celebrate multiply vitamins, 3 bottles Celebrate Calcium plus 500, 2 bottles Celebrate Iron + C (all chewable) & liquid packets of Omega 3. Any fruit flavored chewable tablet does not settle well on my stomach. I will give these to someone if they will pay the postage.

Well. I thought it was a hoax but they just called and said a months supply of protein drinks, bariatric vitamins, and a scar cream are in its way to me. I knew they said I was approved but I really thought it was a scam. I'm shocked they got my insurance to pay for all this stuff. That's a big savings to me.

I go to see my Bariatric surgeon tomorrow to review my clearances and submit the whole package to my insurance. I hope UHC approves me quickly. I'm so anxious and nervous! Please send positive vibes and prayers my way, if you pray. I really really want this and am looking forward to a YES APPROVED! here's ya surgery date. Lol

Has anyone near goal wt. had anthem bc/bs cover band to sleeve revision d/t medical reasons?
jenna35 replied to mary murphy-dematteo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Anthem has very good bariatric coverage in Connecticut if the reversal is for medical reasons, then I am almost certain that it would be a covered benefit. Since, I don't know if you have individual or group coverage it is hard for me make any assumption. I would suggest that if you request a care manager instead of dealing with customer service, he or she would be responsible ultimatly for approving the service if covered. It isn't required but it saves you from dealing with offshore customer service reps and they are a very good group of folks! -
I've cried at more than one of my psych appointments. But then, I continued seeing my therapist even after the mandated visit. Crying and being emotional is certainly permitted. They're trying to evaluate your mental state and fitness for surgery to make sure you'll be a successful candidate. Some psychs just rubber-stamp it (for lack of a better term), some are genuinely involved in the process and want you to be successful. Part of my approval stemmed from being willing to continue to work through the process with my psychologist (and I do know I'm very lucky to have insurance that covers these visits) because I do credit at least part of my success to having someone who is very familiar with the process (most of her patients are bariatrics patients) and understands what I'm going through at the various stages. It depends on your psych though. Was your psych a recommendation from your surgeon/bariatrics team?

I'm officially done with all of the pre-work. All I have left is to meet with the surgeon and have the pre-op class, then surgery! I'm so excited. I've been following the Pre-Bariatric Surgery eating plan for about a week and a half now (3 meals a day and 2 protein drinks, eating out of only 4 food groups) and I'm down almost 7 lbs. Today I finished up with the psychologist and reviewed the scores from the MMPI test. Although she cleared me for surgery, she suggested that I meet with a psychologist locally to follow up for another session or two. My scores were great in most areas except two, self-image and emotional coping. The self-image I totally get, and need to improve because I'm afraid that even at my goal I'll still see the fat girl in the mirror. The emotional coping - I thought she was crazy until she explained what it meant - and there is no way I could have argued. I went through some childhoold trauma and my parents had an explosive, horrid divorce about 7 years ago that I was in the middle of. I guess you don't make it out of that without some emotional baggage and surprisingly enough, ignoring it was not the correct thing to do. So I have some work to do, but not work that will hinder me having surgery. Besides, I want to be healthy and part of that is mentally, not just my body. The psychologist asked for a few days to get her report to the surgery coordinator, then I should be hearing from the nurse to set up the appointment with the surgeon. The good news is, I've almost completely satisified my deductible so my surgery should cost me next to nothing. I've managed to get about 10 weeks worth of pre work done in 4, so as long as I keep moving at that pace I should be able to be banded by the end of April or early May.
