Hi everyone, hope you are all recovering well. Week 5 here and starting chopped foods tomorrow. I think I am going to have some chicken soup. -
My first week post VSG

That brain fog is REAL. I was a space cadet for almost a week. Congratulations on your surgery! -
Yay, that is significant drop too, Boogie! I hope your doctor has some good insight for you tomorrow and helps you get well to exercise soon. I haven't really got into a serious exercise regime yet.😋 I do move a lot throughout the day so I don't stay sitting for long but I figure since our calories are so low at the moment, as long as the weight keeps coming off with my current movement, I'm content for now. I'll pick it up when my calories go up a bit and then maybe a harder workout will be more productive, if that makes sense. I'm doing good, just waiting for the next stall if and when... If and when. lol Keep us posted!

Finally, two weeks later I'm down 4.4 pounds! My leg is still hurting, and I see doc tomorrow bc I've been on antibiotics for 14 days, and have still been able to walk, but I'm ready to hit the weights and do some serious moving to up this weight loss and my leg is limiting that, so I'll have to deal with that. Hope you still are doing awesome!

I was the same (even at 3 weeks). I just ate the recommended small servings and focused on getting water and protein in. Your appetite will return but enjoy this period where you're not hungry. It will never be easier to lose weight!

I didn’t stall until after I was in the “normal” BMI range for my weight. I’m in the midst of another stall right now - it’s very frustrating - but I was fortunate not to stall at all in the first 6 months. I think I’d like to lose another 7-8 lbs - going for 135 which is 10 below my initial goal - and it is frustrating to now be this close and hitting longer stalls. Not sure if it’s that I’m eating too much (around 1200 calories a day) or not enough because I am very active - weights 3/4 times a week for an hour and at least 20 min of cardio on weight days, if not, 45-60 on the other days (which is intense cardio - Peloton bike).

Sometimes your hormones from the weight loss can totally mess up your cycle! My own was really messed up at one point and I had my period then was off it for about a week and had it again and then was off it for a week again and had it again and it kept recycling that for about two months (in which I had my period about 5 times) before it even itself out. I did bring it up to my doctor, but by that point it had even itself out again. She told me that if it happened again she'd give me some meds to hopefully regulate it so you could always bring it up with your PCP.

Hives? Possible food allergies?
jenny8791 replied to jenny8791's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It happened three times this weekend. I think I'm going to call my primary care doctor and see why I can't go through allergy testing to see what's going on. I did stop all vitamins for a bit when it first started happening because I thoughts that's what it was but after 4+ days of being without them and coming down with hives again I eliminated the vitamins. And i'm really only taking a heartburn pill so I don't think it's that. I was taking about 12 prescriptions a day but I reversed all my health conditions with the weight loss. I guess I need to stop complaining. Getting rid of the diabetes is worth having hives for. Thanks for the feedback everyone. -
One week post-op — feeling hunger
Lisa G replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was STARVING the week following surgery. Then poof it went away. Once I thought of it as phantom hunger I was able to feel better (as in your brain hasn’t registered that most of your stomach is gone). Good luck. -
The first day after surgery, I did three 400 m "laps" around my cul-de-sac. It tired me out and I had to stop and burp up all that ridiculous gas they blow into you during laparoscopic surgery. The second day, I increased to 800 m three times a day. The third and fourth days, I did 1600 m (a mile) twice a day. The fifth and sixth days, I did 2.5k (something like 1.5 miles) twice a day. I see my PCP tomorrow and will see whether I feel up to jogging any of it. I should add that before surgery I was extremely active, worked outdoors, and did CrossFit. So I am no stranger to physical activity. One thing, as someone who has had large, active, intelligent dogs. They may be well behaved but if they start to pull for any reason you HAVE TO LET GO OF THE LEAD. You cannot allow them to yank you.

What does the surgery feel like?
vikingbeast replied to PCOS_Mama94's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Like others have said, it's a time hop. My anesthesiologist didn't even say much. He put the little plastic cup over my head and the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room. I was incredibly sleepy all that day and much of the next. I had brain fog like when you're addicted to caffeine and can't have any (though I've been off caffeine for weeks now). My anesthesiologist gave me a TAP block, which is like an epidural nerve block for your abdominals, so I really didn't even feel much around my midsection. I was able to hoist myself off the bed and go walking, albeit slowly and clutching my IV pole at first. They also put a seasickness patch behind my ear in pre-op prep and I cannot even describe how much that helped. -
There were a few days in those first few weeks when I just did not feel like eating, but I tried to get my protein (shakes) & water in the best I could. Once I started soft foods, there were some meals where I only ate a bite or 2. Once you are healed further from the surgery and can eat a variety of foods, it should get better. Good luck, I hope things improve for you.

Is anyone going through the same thing I'm going through I am 3 weeks out and I have no desire to eat. Is this normal?
-
Hello, This is my first time writing anything on here so I hope I do it right! So I had my mini gastric bypass on the 18th of August 2021 and since then I got my period twice and both times it lasted 8 days! and there is one week break between them and my actual period ended on the 12th. so that's 22 days of bleeding in one month and a half. I know these things can happen post-op but the weird thing is my last period ended on the 15th of September and I just started again 4 days later!! I'm very worried and confused tbh... If anyone knows if this is normal or not please let me know or if you have any suggestions on what might help.

I'm only one week out, so I don't have much experience, But I was really nervous about being dehydrated, because I also drank A LOT of liquids before surgery and was worried about the "tiny sips" I kept reading about. Yes, the first few days it was terrible... tiny sips would be painful. But now a week out I am able to take whole mouthfulls of water. I can't guzzle down a whole water bottle or anything, but it's a huge improvement in just a week. I'm getting well over 64 oz of water a day now, and I am in no danger of getting dehydrated at this point.

One week post-op — feeling hunger
lizonaplane replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your doctor did not prescribe omeprazole or something similar? Can you check your discharge papers and make sure you have all the meds that were prescribed? I feel like I have a demon roaming around in my chest and gut sometimes but it's not hunger; usually it's from taking sips that are too big or after I have to take all my pills at night. I do feel hunger pangs if I don't eat every few hours, but this is to be expected since I don't eat much at once and I'm only eating a few hundred calories a day. Did the surgery team or your endocrinologist adjust your insulin to account for the lowered food intake? Don't start thinking you made a mistake! You need to take in some food not to feel hungry you still have a stomach; albeit a smaller one. I found the first week really rough; now it's still rough at 7 days out but SOOOOO much better. -
Looking for suggestions - Need to decide to resleeve or bypass
Tufflaw posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my original sleeve done in 2016, went from 290 pre-surgery to 195, felt fantastic, no problems at all, they even invited me to have my picture taken for the doctor's advertising! Then I had some personal and professional problems and managed to gain EVERYTHING back. I met with my doctor and he recommended revision, which I am scheduled for some time in November, currently getting my clearances. He said after my endoscopy we'd discuss whether to re-sleeve or convert to bypass. He said if my sleeve was still intact it would have to be a bypass, but if it was dilated I could choose. I had my endoscopy last week and the sleeve is indeed dilated so now I have to make a decision. Another factor is I've had GERD for over 10 years and take esomeprazole daily which helps a lot but I've heard it's not great to take that forever either. I've also heard that bypass usually cures GERD, so that's another consideration. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has either been re-sleeved or converted to bypass so I can have a better understanding of both options before I meet with my doctor again, Thanks! -
Hi there, Im awaiting my surgeon appointment in a couple of weeks. In the months since I have decided to go forward with the weight loss surgery, I have decided to make changes already to improve my health before I even get a surgery date. One of my health issues is that I was diagnosed with NAFLD about five years ago. Also had a liver biopsy then (as well as my Gallbladder removed at the same time). I take organic milk thistle for my liver and try to avoid Tylenol and alcohol like the plague. I have not had any alcohol in the past three months, getting my body ready for surgery. I do know that I have an in large liver and the latest bloodwork I had, some results revolving bloodwork were good and then some more elevated. I keep reading about trying to reduce the size of your liver prior to surgery for those with a NAFLD. Any advice out there, I would appreciate. I’m trying to do the best that I can, of course I’m sure the surgeon will guide me upon his expertise as well, but I am trying to do everything that I can in my power prior to prepare myself. I have been on a rather low carb diet for a couple of months since finding out that I have type two diabetes, I go see my PCP this week. I am on Metformin , I have been on that for over 16 years for PCOS. I also started Ozempic recently. I am trying to up my protein and vegetable intake as well as water intake, I noticed when I get enough rest and distress and exercise more, my glucose levels are so much better. Anyway, I’m sure everything is relative, meaning the NAFLD and the diabetes…. I just want to get as healthy as possible so they can do the surgery. Luckily, I am within the A1C limits for surgery. Just not sure about my liver. Thank you for any thoughts and advice.

One week post-op — feeling hunger
imhenryxvi replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, MusiGal. I’m sorry to hear that you are feeling hunger pangs, too. I do think the acid reducer helps matters. Now that I’m about three weeks out, I’m realizing that I wake up very hungry, but don’t experience hunger as dramatically throughout the day. So, if I eat sensibly in the morning (I’m on soft foods now), I can pretty much manage the rest of the day. I encourage you to ask your surgeon about an acid reducer. Good luck! -
I just had my surgery a week ago, but my parents were here this week and we went through all my clothes from the last time I lost a lot of weight (through diet and exercise) six years ago. I thought I had gotten rid of them all, but I still had a lot left. They're mostly size L-XL. I got rid of some I don't like any more, and honestly, most of the others don't work for the way my life is now (they need to be ironed and I travel all the time now). I'll decide whether to get rid of the rest later. We also got rid of some of the clothes that are too big now since I'd lost 50 lbs during my time preparing for surgery. That wasn't much. For now since I'm still sore from surgery I want the big t-shirts. I am not willing to expend any time or energy trying to sell or "find good homes" for these. I just had my dad take them over to the clothing donation bin across the street. If I was more "myself" (i.e., not on lifting restrictions) I would probably try to deal with it in a better way, but I just couldn't focus, and my parents were being so helpful!

I had my surgery one week ago today. Here's what I've noticed: 1) I'm down 7.2 lbs 2) The pain was not so bad in the hospital but pretty bad the first few days at home, especially when trying to get up from lying down or when sitting up. Only minimal pain when changing positions now. 3) I took 3 total narcotic pills once I came home 4) The constipation is real. I did not have a BM from two days before my surgery until 5 days after. This was despite two kinds of laxatives prescribed by the hospital. I ended up needing a laxative suppository and Miralax. The suppository helped me go in like 30 minutes. I'm now adding miralax and magnesium citrate on a daily basis. Drinking my 64 oz of water has been helpful, too 5) Drinking water or anything was really hard the first few days. No matter how small I made the sips, I still had pain in my chest, and then it felt and sounded like a demon was in there, growling, angry because he had been evicted from my stomach 6) By day 7 (today), I can drink a full mouthfull of water or protein shake. It's easier to take my pills at night than it was, but it's still harder than before surgery. 7) I do have hunger, but I'm eating less than 500 calories a day, so that's not surprising. I only need to eat a small amount like 2/3 of a yogurt or half a protein drink to feel full, although I need to eat every few hours 8. Walking is hard. It makes my incision hurt a lot. I have walked around the block a few times, but I'm tired by the time I get home, and it's a short block. I can walk up the ten steps to the front door, but hills are hard 9) I tried to do a bit of work today, just going through emails and responding to them, but after about a half hour, my head was swimming. I'm glad I took two weeks off! 10) My parents were here for a week helping me out. They stayed in a hotel nearby. I didn't need them that much, but it was really helpful for things like laundry and the dishwasher and trash. And for company. But it was hard seeing them eat tasty food when I was just eating yogurt or protein shakes. I am still glad them came, because now I am bored and lonely

One week post-op — feeling hunger
lizonaplane replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am now one week out and I feel hunger often, too. I am taking omeprazole. i find that I need to eat every few hours, but I am fine with a yogurt or half a protein shake or some sugar free jello (that's about all I'm allowed on my plan as I'm still only allowed liquids for another week). It also helps to drink a lot, in small sips (so it doesn't hurt). It's hard when you see other people eat "real" food too, but that' not what causes the hunger - to me, that's just wishing I could have what they're having. The hunger is just hunger, unrelated to cravings (i'm having cravings for cheese, but I'm also having true hunger). -
Who lost a lot before surgery?
lizonaplane replied to lizonaplane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The hospital prescribed senna and a stool softener. When I hadn't had a BM after a week, they suggested a laxative suppository and miralax. I did both and had a BM a half hour after the suppository. I am now doing miralax every day plus the senna and stool softener. I just started magnesium citrate and will stop the senna and stool softener as they were only prescribed for two weeks. The hospital suggested I needed to increase my fluids and I've now been able to get above 64 oz of fluids the last few days and it's been better. I'm trying to get more activity too, but my incision hurts when I walk. Good luck! -
Checklist for gastric bypass surgery
NovaLuna replied to Alon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're female and it's even the slightest bit close to your period then bring pads. The surgery brought my period a week early (TMI, sorry).
