  1. No, a revision from lapband to gastric bypass...
  2. Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just had my lap band surgery revised to roux-en-y gastric bypass on April 17th. Initially I lost 86 lbs with my lap band but the Lapband never worked for me, for the 3 years I had it all I did was vomit; which was what lead me to my journey to undergo the bypass. I had my surgery at NYU hospital; the wonderful Dr. Marina Kurian performed the surgery. All seems to be going well. Getting my fluids down, and in a minimal amount of pain. I do find sitting upright for any amount of time is a bit uncomfortable for me. And I feel very bloated with a lot of gas pain. How long did you guys experience this bloat/pain? When did you start feeling more like yourself as far as energy wise. Right now I just feel exhausted! Granted I did not sleep much at all in the hospital. I am looking forward to hearing everyone else's experience and words of encouragement. Thank you for reading this and giving me the opportunity to introduce myself. Looking forward to sharing my journey with you all! Best, Mary
  3. Dr. Wade Barker did my lap-band and my revision to the sleeve. He's an EXCELLANT surgeon. He uses Forest Park Medical center, which I highly recommend. In addition to my revision, Dr. Barker did the following during the same surgery: fixed an undiagnosed hiatal hernia, removed my gall bladder (had been having problems with it for about a yr) and cleaned out tons of adhesions I had from 5 previous abdominal surgeries. Dr. Barker has many years of experience in laproscopic surgery. He started out as a general surgeon but now is primarily bariatric. His office will give you his stats on how many of each surgery he's done, complication rates, etc. The staff is very nice and knowledgeable. My only complaint is that you have to wait quite a while before appointments sometimes. But to me, that's not an issue if the doctor and staff are good. A couple of weeks post-op I had a hematoma develop where my lapband port had been. It caused one of my incisions to open up. Dr. Barker was in surgery that day, so they told me to go straight to the hospital. Dr. Barker came in as soon as I got there and took care of my problem. The follow-up care in his office was very good. I hate to do this, but I'm going to have to say to NOT use Dr. Glenn Ihde. He is new to the bariatric business. When I was in the hospital after my VSG, we met another patient who he had done WLS on and totally screwed up. They had to have another doctor "fix" whatever he had done. Also, I took my 18yr old son to him for abdominal pain (he's on my insurance) and after a colonoscopy he wanted to remove part of my son's colon. We went to someone else for a second opinion and they said there was nothing wrong with my son other than spastic colon and that the problem Dr. Ihde said my son had could not even be diagnosed with a colonoscopy. I've lost all trust in the man now.
  4. Dr. Wade Barker is awesome from the friends that I have in Texas that have gone to him for their sleeve and revisions.

    2Days Post Op

Have you tried ground chicken? I use ground chicken in place of ground beef in my house for nearly everything (chili, tacos, etc). I've had problems with regular chicken breast with my lapband but been ok with ground. Hope I don't have issues after my revision to RNY. I don't always trust the ground chicken in the store so I usually pick out nice chicken breasts, take it to the butcher and have them grind it down so I know what I'm getting. Being in Kuwait, I don't always trust the stickers that say boneless/skinless. Labels out here are terribly inaccurate.

    New here and need help

Have you looked into getting a revision of your bypass? My Dr said 1 of 3 things causes weight gain 1-something wrong with the original surgery like an enlarged stoma 2-lack of proper eating habits or 3-lack of proper exercise. I hope you find the help you are looking for!

    RE SUBMITTED!

Oh wow, I didn't think revision surgeries required the supervised diet stuff... I'm sure it varies by company. Anyway, good luck to you!
  8. If you eat a well balanced diet and take the prescribed vitamins and minerals you should have no deficiency as you age. My plan calls for 1500 mg calcium citrate which protects from bone loss. It is important to take calcium citrate, not other forms of calcium. I had my RNY 30 years ago, and while it was not entirely successful (so I'm leading up to revision at age 73), the surgery had no long term negative effects on me. Indeed, I credit it for avoiding Type II Diabetes, which many of my overweight friends now have.

    July 14th Surgery -

Lap Band revision to Gastric Bypass on 7/14. Anyone else in July?
  10. I had LapBand in 2009, but my endo. thinks I should have a revision to sleeve or bypass. Insurance required 6 month supervised diet before my initial surgery. Will they require this again before a revision surgery or does having the band itself negate that requirement?
  11. Thank you bunches ! ! ! I am having a repeat/scheduled csection. Due to the clotting disorder, a t-anchor incision during my first csection(13 years ago), and a horrendous amount of scar tissue and adhesions on my uterus which were increased by the drains that were placed after my revision to drain abscesses that developed in my abdominal and pelvic cavity, a VBAC is not advisable, as much as people want to say they are fine, great and good, it is not a good idea for my body. If I were to have a bleed with a vaginal delivery, they could not get to it fast enough, my uterus is possibly adhered to the wall, making my risk for uterine rupture about 90%, I'm not willing to take that risk just to deliver naturally. . Grant it, I have zero desire to shoot a child out of my vagina, but it is not medically recommended for me to attempt a VBAC. Plus, due to other medical issues, we are considering a partial hysterectomy during the csection, at a bare minimum I will have my tubes tied because I have been advised to not have more children. The condition I have is MTHFR(that's just the acronym if anyone feels froggy and wants to research it or get a general overview of the condition), it increases the risks of birth defects especially spina bifida, along with all the lovely stuff it does to my body.
  12. I had the sleeve and after horrible reflux had the mini because I was told it would fix it. Reflux is worse than ever and now I need a full bypass. Super upset I have to have another surgery. I wish I would have just gotten the full bypass and not the mini but that's what my surgeon recommended. Waiting to see if insurance will pay for this revision, they denied me last time.
  13. Dr John Alexander.... He is doing my revision and he is amazing
  14. It is 42-hours (approximately) until check-in time for Monday's RNY revision from Lap-Band. I am sooo excited and I can't wait to be on the path to a healthy weight and healthier life. I lost a lot of weight with the Lapband at first (100-pounds, 1 1/2-years), but just gained it all back the following 5-years. The "skinny" me was amazing, but gaining the weight back has been heart-breaking. It felt like such a TEASE to only be skinny for that short period of time. I can't wait for the skinnier me to be back again and to have that energy back. Come on "losers bench".
  15. Had sleeve 2015, lost 60 lbs, gained back 25 lbs. Considering revision, but unable to decide between MGB or RNY. As all surgeries, they both have pros and cons. Revisions typically lose slower. Looking for experiences with either surgery. Please share!
  16. My band was removed because of erosion, and I will never be able to get another band according to my team of surgeons (too much damage/scar tissue.) I felt like a science project the whole time I was banded and was glad to have the contraption removed and wish I'd have done a gastric sleeve or bypass instead. Like I said elsewhere I didn't exactly have "medical" symptoms but I certainly felt different in the Digestive Department. While banded, food and liquid passed a certain way, and I was accustomed to the sounds my stomach made. Once eroded the gurgles were way off key, they lost their rhythm. It wasn't painful but something felt really wrong. I still had restriction and PB'd the night before band removal. My doctor indicated a port infection most likely lead to erosion since he was removing a lot of bands from people that had port problems such as port revision, flipped ports, pulled ports, infected ports. He also believes that a tiny nick on the stomach during surgery can go unnoticed, something so small that the doc will ignore. The smallest infection from the nick grows bacteria that can't ever be stopped, not even with antibiotics. The infection makes its way up to the port, and the rest is history. I simply woke up one day feeling really strange, an eerie instinct or intuition that had me make an appointment for an endoscopy that confirmed I eroded. So many people that don't have a clue are posting their beliefs on erosion so I wanted to share some facts. Ports should never be replaced or treated with antibiotics once infected, and there's no indication that we cause our own erosion. I see that a lot here, and it's not true. This isn't up for debate, either, because everyone has different band/erosion experiences. It was a great way to limit portions but I never thought it would last forever and really wish I'd gone straight to a bypass/sleeve instead. I said the same thing 1000 times, that I wanted something reversable, which is pure nonsense considering I never wanted to lose 100 pounds temporarily, and that's what the band did for me. Hot, now not. Hindsight, damn.

    flipped port

My port is NOT flipped after all!! I had been waiting for the insurance company to approve a "port revision" surgery after being told by one of my doctors that my port was flipped. After almost 2 weeks one of the girls in the office told me that the other surgeon in the office would like to see me and told me that he was confident that he would be able to get to my port. I decided to go ahead and let him try... HE GOT IT ON THE FIRST TRY!!! I don't know why the other surgeon had so much trouble. Anyways, I now have 3cc's in my band and I do feel a little more restriction. I go back in 2 weeks for another fill. I am so happy that I don't have to have another surgery!!! Thank you to my new doctor!!!

    Is My pouch stretched?

You will see A LOT of debate on this and not even all doctors agree. Personally, I 100 % believe you can stretch a pouch, but probably because I saw mine stretch out from my sleeve and thats why I revised to mini bypass. Also, I worked for years with bypass patients who gained their weight back after stretching their pouches and came in for band over bypass procedures. That being said, it's also important to remember the first year is the honeymoon period and the further out you get the harder it will be to lose. This doesn't always mean stretched pouch, it can also mean your body is just used to things now so its up to you to be diligent about eating and exercise if you want to get to and stay at goal. Year two is where the real work begins.

    VSG at Scripps Clinic

Please, whatever you do, DO NOT GET THE BAND. I made the mistake of getting the Band. You can go to some of my postings here and on the LapBandTalk site to see what all has happened to me. I followed all the "rules and regulations" to a "T". I swear to god, if you have a problem, it is because you don't "chew, chew, chew", etc. Doesn't matter what is going on, that is the conclusion the surgeon will jump to before even listening to what is going on with you. What a bunch of bull..... The Band should be outlawed. I am looking forward to getting this thing out of me and converting to the sleeve in December (I now have all the Fluid out of my band and am waiting for the swelling, etc to get better). It has been a very costly mistake, this band has. I can't tell you how much money I spent for the initial surgery (even though the insurance paid for alot of it-my surgeon charged a $3000.00 "support" fee not covered by insurance, he only used an anesthesiologist who does not contract with the same insurances and insisted on getting the whole amount he charged out of me, which was twice what any one else charged-I think he and the surgeon split the "profits", etc). I had many fills and unfills, surgery for lysis of adhesions around the band, etc. All total it has been around $15,000 out of pocket. And believe it or not, the insurance has paid 80%. As stated, I will ge getting the revision to the sleeve in December. I am going to Mexico to Dr. Aceves. My insurance will pay for a revision if I have it done in the U.S. but I want Dr. Aceves to do it because of his experience. I only wish I would have been smart enough to go with the sleeve in the first place. It is the same as a partial gastrectomy and it has been done for years. There are several people I know that have had the gastrectomy done for other reasons more than 20 years ago and they are "going strong." JUST TO REPEAT: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT GET THE BAND!!!!

    new with questions

Okay, so I went to a seminar yesterday with Dr. Cottam from Salt Lake Regional. I was very impressed with the facts/figures he presented about his safety record, etc. He also seems to be very active in research, which I really respect. The cash price for lap band is 13850. This is 900 higher than South Valley Surgical and 2500ish lower than Rocky Mountain. Has anyone had experience with/heard anything about Dr. Cottam? I know he has a good reputation for being able to do complicated revisions . . . something I'm hoping I never need!

    It's Pumkin season!!

It sounds so good!! My band to sleeve revision surgery is Thursday. I can have yogurt thinned with fat free milk once I get home, so I will definitely have to try this [emoji5] Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. I'm 4 days away from a band to VSG revision, so I'm sure I'm extra nervous, but I'm just convinced that VSG will be the death of me. I'm just hoping that it'll be in 40-50 years, and not 10-15 (I'm 31 now). I don't know what to make of this. I'm just scared, I guess.

    Revising from Sleeve to Bypass...

While I have not had my sleeve yet, I do have to say this is where I would start before a revision....changing the type of tool isn't going to fix the drive to eat out of head hunger. I know in advance that a big part of my problem will be mental, and I have started with a new therapist to help me with those issues. Good luck with your decision
  24. Just curious, why did you need a sleeve revision? Did you have to pay again?

    Vsg to rny

My revision from VSG to RNY was in May of this year so far so good. I can pretty much tolerate whatever I am eating (I am eating turkey, chicken, veggies and other soft proteins, no slider foods). I was hoping I would have the dumping but I don’t so far. But then again I haven’t had anything truly sweet etc. which is good lol i feel full with some foods but I think because I keep my food/meals to 3 ounces or less. I am afraid to try and eat more. I get extremely full with salads though and they cause me to burp a lot. It’s probably the lettuce but yea, no complications so far
