  1. I was just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with United Health Care Choice Plus denial of revision from lap-band to vertical sleeve? I have had complications for two years with gastritis, dyphagia, ulcers, esophageal dilation, and pouch dilation. I also have a hiatal hernia that by new doctor thinks should have been fixed at the time of my lap-band. My BMI is now 35 with several co-morbidities (sleep apnea, post Heart Attack, coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis, ischemic heart disease, sick sinus syndrome, pacemaker, now on beta blockers, etc...). I meet all of the criteria for revision but they just don't want to pay for the revision to the sleeve. First, they stated I did not meet the weight requirements. Appealed and now they upheld their decision stating it was not a medically necessary. I have one last appeal but really don't know what to do to change their minds. I do know that it will go the someone who has never looked at my file and had nothing to do with the original denial or appeal. Any suggestions to help get this approved? Any sample letters out there that anyone knows about? Sorry this was so lengthy! Thanks for listening!
  2. Brilliant news Dee. I'm a year out from my revision and haven't reached goal yet but am slowly working towards it. You've done really well - well done!
  3. This is a shot in the dark but I really need to find information so here goes.... First off.. HI EVERYONE!! In 1995 I had the "molina band" WLS (I believe Dr. Oria still uses this band to date but was in training when I had mine put on). I weighed in at 285 and got down to around 160-70 in about a year or two. I have yo-yo'd with my weight for the last 13 years and am now sitting at 210 and feel like I am gaining daily. I have lived with this band and all that goes with it for 16 years. It is time for a change!!! I am looking for ANYONE that has or knows someone that had this band and now has a sleeve. I cannot find any information on any of the websites I have googled and from what some of the doctors are telling me, the sleeve is not the best option for "molina band" revisions, the RNY is. I dont want the RNY, period. Dumping? No freaking way! I have "dumped", thrown up, gotten sick or whatever you want to call it for the last 16 years and i am DONE with that!!! I had an EGD last Friday and the band hasnt eroded into my stomach. THANK GOD FOR THAT!! My doc says that he will remove the band but he is sure I will have scar tissue to get around and he might have to leave part of the band in. Since insurance will not pay for a revision (exclusion on policy for ONE WLS per LIFETIME, awesome!) I am going to be heading to MX using my FSA funds to have Dr. Kelly complete the sleeve. Right now I am debating having the band removed here in the USA under my insurance and then heading to MX in January or just having Dr. Kelly do it all in January. I am setting up a phone call with him for next week too. This is why I am so desperate for information from anyone with experience with this damn band! Sorry! I just keep thinking to myself.. how much more different could the removal of my band be compared to the stories I am reading about the lapband removals? Thank you all in advance for your input. I have soooo enjoyed reading and learning from each of you and seeing your transformation is soooo inspiring!
  4. I've had two c-sections and a hysterectomy. Has anyone been able to use this procedure as a kind of TT and had it covered by insurance? What was the surgery like? How long in hospital? How long out of work? How did it come out? Any other information would be helpful.:help: Thank you. Cheryl

    Revisions? Anyone?

I am so glad that this thread is here, and that there are people like me. I felt like a complete failure with my band, lost 40lbs since March of 2007. Looking to lose about 120lbs total...obviously I have a way to go... I've been thinking about revising from band to RNY...My mother has had great success and my band doctor offered to do the revision. Just a bit scared about the whole thing at the moment!
  6. Anyone posting that lost their band and revised to another procedure? What procedure? Do you like it? Planning on a revision if you haven't had it done yet?

    Revisions? Anyone?

So your doc is doing removal of band and revision to rny in two separate surgeries? Is there any reason for this? Just being nosy! I'm so excited to see other people going through the same things that I'm going through...
  8. Yeah I just found out about the sleeve a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately my insurance company does not yet cover it(just bypass and band) and since I'd already been approved for the band and given a surgery date, I just went with it and was banded last Thursday. To be honest, had they covered the sleeve, I would have gone with that. Especially when I read about getting stuck and PBs and sliming and erosion and slippage. There are just fewer complications with VSG and there are almost no food restrictions, you just can't eat much. Maybe I jumped the gun and should have waited until it was approved, I don't know. But the good thing is that if I do have complications in the future, I can always revise to the sleeve and it will probably be covered by then.
  9. Just trying to see how long on average in the procedure to go from the band to the sleeve? Also, how long was the hospital stay?
  10. I can't add any specifics about that kind of band, but with the current crop of bands it does seem to be fairly common for the revisions to be staged with the removal done in one procedure and then the sleeve done in another procedure some weeks or months later to allow the stomach to heal from any damage that may have been done by the band. I don't know how many are planned that way versus decided upon when the surgeon gets inside, but there is a band to sleeve forum here where you should be able to get some general insight on that issue. Good luck in making the change,
  11. I've never heard of the Molina band but I really hope that the removal goes well and that your revision is successful!
  12. What insurance company do you have? I have United Healthcare and they are requiring this. I think it is absolutely ridiculous and intend on writing an appeal letter. I recently moved so am waiting on receiving some of my old medical records from my previous state to include with the appeal letter. My Lapband removal was approved but my revision to sleeve was not - because of not having the six months pre-op diet. Like you, I feel like having a LapBand for the last 5+ years should qualify as my diet. What's even more ridiculous is that the denial stated that the diet had to be supervised by a doctor who does not perform weight loss surgery. Why would I go to another Dr. for weight loss when I already had weight loss surgery? Just to cover all angles though, I found a new Primary Dr. in my new State who will support me for the surgery and started on a plan about 7 weeks ago. He is well versed in how the process works so he is making sure that he writes in his notes what I am doing and the results. I hope you don't have the same requirement. I fully understand it for someone who has not had WLS and I went through it before to get my Lapband approved originally; but for revisioners it makes no sense. I chalk it up to just another stall tactic so I will be appealing even if I'm almost done with the six months by the time the appeal decision comes through. I hope your insurance or your employer's requirements are more sensible then mine. Susie
  13. My revision took 3.5 hours. Dr. Aceves said I had a lot of scar tissue (gall bladder, band, port revision, unbanding). He said the scar tissue where the band used to be was so thick the stapler wouldn't fire through it, and he had to hand stitch my sleeve at the top. Surgery was on Friday and I left the hospital Monday morning, which is the usual time frame for his sleeve patients. Donali
  14. Just a quick question. Did any of you have to complete the 6 month diet before your insurance would approve your lap band to sleeve procedure? I can't believe they would have consider you to do this. I have the lap band now (2004) and I'm going for a revision to the sleeve. My dr. office just put in my request to my insurance company on Friday, so I'm just sitting on pins and needles wondering what they are going to require...I would think a 7 yr diet plan with the lap band would be sufficient for the 6 moths of tring to lose weight....??? anybody? thanks
  15. Hi, just wondering if anyone has had a sleeve revised to the bypass ?
  16. actually i was revised from vsg to bypass and i had the concern and i have not lost much weight since the RNY but my reflux is gone!
  17. Ms Broad....I applaud you. I wish I could be so confident. I know I'm scared because my band failed, and I don't want to do another failure. I think it would also make a difference if I was back up at my higher weight - I was banded at 241, now I'm at 173 or so, but that's up 20 lbs from my lowest with the band. I would be more willing to make what I feel is a very drastic decision. But at the same time, why should I wait until I've gained (cause I know it's going to happen...)? Isn't that what everyone says - that they wished they had done it sooner? Why can't I be normal and not need WLS in the first place? I'm setting up some counseling next week. I'm having a really hard time dealing with these feelings of, "I hate being me." Such feelings are totally new to me....I have a beautiful family who supports me 100%, even considering this revision. I don't know, this band failure thing has really changed me into a person I don't recognize. Can you feel my pain?
  18. responding to the main topic.. I never really worried about leaking- a) they check in the hospital they check 1 week later when drain came out- The revision I had was all at once and very difficult and very different from the band- would I do it all over again- Heck yea but about 10 years ago!! lol

    Revision Gone Wrong

Revisions always have higher complication rates, unfortunately. The complication goes up as the time between procedures goes down. My surgeon (just for example) will not touch a revision without at least 2 months between procedures. In my case, it will be closer to 6.5 months. I've gained back about 30 lbs since my band was removed in September. I'd have rather not not gained that weight back, but I think it's a small price to pay for the reduction of risk... and it'll come off again. I was current on the stats a few months ago... I'm not so much now... but I think the "back-to-back" procedure risk is something like 30%, and the "some time in between" risk is something like 3% - 5%.... so you can see how much difference that healing period can make. Knowing those stats, even if my surgeon had been willing to do them back-to-back I would have declined. And probably looked at other surgeons. (That's just me personally, others prefer all-in-one operations) faith-hope-love, it sounds like you had a really bad septic infection. Those are indeed horrible. My grandfather survived stage 4 cancer, only to die from a septic infection caused by erosion of his stomach from the Predasone that was supposed to help him get better. You too often have no idea until it's already well established. Would you mind sharing a bit more info (if you know the answers)? It may help you in your goal of raising risk awareness, and it may also help set some minds at ease. How much time elapsed between your band removal, and your sleeve revision? What leak prevention methods did your surgeon use, in terms of his surgical technique? What leak detection methods did he use post-op (before closing you up, after, or both)? How many revisions had your surgeon done? How many band -> sleeve revisions had your surgeon done? Did he repair your adhesions during the revision? What boughie size did he use? Best of luck with your continued recovery, and thank you for being willing to share your story.
  20. Hello im new here and have a few questions. I am currently on my 3rd day of my pre OP diet. My surgery date is October 29th. I was wondering how long the surgery takes? (They will also be fixing my hiatal hernia) how long is the average Hospital stay? What you couldn't live without in the Hospital? And last if all what was the post OP pain like once you got home? Thank you and good luck to everyone. Hw: 320 lowest weight after band: 275 current weight: 279
  21. I've had my band since Oct. 2011 and it has been a nightmare. I'd lose weight if it was so tight I could only have fluids but would have the worst acid reflux. Anytime I tried to eat anything it would just come right back out so I went from 256 to 207 and back up to 236 because they had to take most of the saline out. It's so frustrating! I asked my doctor if I could switch to the bypass and she told me to call her with my new insurance info at the first of the year so I did and got a call that my insurance does cover revision but I need to go in and see the doctor this Thursday to talk in detail and see if I need nutrition classes again. Yikes! I hope everything goes well.
  22. Anyone out there have a gastric sleeve revised to a gastic bypass?
  23. but with the DS, you still have a sleeved stomach. I'm not sure how this is going to stop the acid reflux. Is he going to do something else to your stomach to help with the reflux? People who have reflux issues with the sleeve usually revise to RNY. And they usually revise to the DS if they have to lose a lot more weight.
  24. I'm in the process of getting insurance approval for a revision as well. I was sleeved two years ago and have recently(past few months) been suffering from acid reflux. I also was told by my surgeon that I would greatly benefit from the duodenal switch to serve as a component to the sleeve. I am excited that there is another option even after being compliant to the program. I'm hoping that this will assist me with the issues I'm having and I pray it is an alternative and blessing to you in this journey we are taking to get healthy. REVISIONS

I had a revision back on June 16th 2017. I went from a VGB that was done in 1994 to a RNY on 6/16/2016 I had managed to keep off all the weight of for 20 years but the last two years it just came up and out of nowhere. But that wasn’t the issue the issue was that I had severe Gerd and major pain where the filter was located at. It had weakened over the years and it was very painful when I would eat or drink anything. That made it impossible for me to keep anything down. So my surgery was done to correct that issue. I’m now down 35 pounds and feeling [emoji817] better. No more pain thank goddess!! Now I’m having issues getting my primary insurance to pay for the sugary as it’s a non covered procedure. My secondary has paid some but I’m now appealing the denial. I hope it gets approved, otherwise I’m stuck paying 174k, as I was in the hospital for a week. Because of the type of surgery and how invasive it was a 3 day stay was minimum but I had complications due to my blood count being so low so I had to stay a little longer.
