  1. I would insist on having it out unless there is some reason it would prevent you from having the bypass done due to scar tissue, etc. I had my band empty for over a year before my revision and I still had issues with it. Eating is completely different without that nasty band.
  2. Today is go day!!! Lap band removal at 11:15 am and hopefully not too much scar tissue so they can revise me to bypass!! Nervous, but excited!!
  3. Had the surgery yesterday. Still in the hospital. My surgeon said I had minimal scar tissue. Didn't take any pain meds and the pain is bearable. They still have me on ice chips, just waiting to switch to water
  4. I hate that you're in so much pain. I pray it gets better quickly. I've read a few of your posts because I am scared to death of this happening to me. I've had controlled reflux for the last ten years. I am now a week post op and this reflux is killing me ????. My surgeons nurse says it will just take time, but I'm scared of having to have revision. I would never have chosen that. I weighed 199 the morning of my surgery (5'4"). Good luck with everything - Amye

    Waiting is so hard!

Had my consultation, and I'm glad I decided to find another surgeon. I didn't meet the surgeon this time, but I really liked his staff. I didn't feel like the place was a bariatrics mill, either, and they took my concerns about my band seriously. They did a complete unfill, and I've got an appointment for an upper GI series with barium. Hopefully, we'll be able to document a slip so I can get a revision.
  6. After what feels like a long and strenuous journey, I finally have a surgery date! I am so excited. (And a little nervous). This past month has been super challenging, and I've sometimes wondered if I should be getting surgery right now. I feel guilty because my husband has stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer. He will be starting a new cancer drug, and I will be out of town for close to a week for the surgery. He is fine about me having the surgery, though. He knows I need to get healthy. Anyway!!! Who else is having surgery in March or the end of February? And did I mention the surgery is the day after my birthday? I am asking my family for ramekins (custard cups), tiny sauce cups, dip bowls, appetizer plates and silverware, and whatever else I find might be good to have in my post surgery life. My surgery is at St. Lukes in Phoenix, and My doc is Dr. Juarez. I'm having an open gastric bypass revising an old 1989 stomach stapling.

    3 days until revision!

I had revision from band to RNY on January 23, 2015. I stayed 2 days in the hospital. I was off heavy pain medicine the next morning. I walked right way and kept walking. I sipped water every 15 minutes. I know I am very lucky and thank god for a relatively easy recovery. I had very little pain, quick recovery and I'm down 26 lbs. already. I have been following my doctors orders to a "T". I wish I had done the RNY the first time, but I was too scared. This has been one of the best decisions I've made! I wish you the best of luck!

Band to sleeve failure HELP PLEASE

I read a couple of the recent replies siince this thread was revised. My 2 cents - the sleeve NEVER felt as restrictive for me as the band did. I had to wrap my head around the idea that I COULD still over eat with sleeve (heck, I could overeat with band obviously!) but it did work very well for me as a tool to manage my food intake. It is dissappointing to wind up with a larger sleeve than some, but, I do not believe that means you cant do this. Even with a "bigger sleeve" if you eat DENSE Protein first, don't graze, stay hydrated and get active you will lose. One of my "learnings" is that I do still feel hunger, but it is okay, I will live. That sounds wacky, but I was so hungry for so long, I didn't realize I have almost a phobia of it. weird. but, normal people do get hungry, they live with it, then they eat a little (not too much) and are no longer hungry for awhile. novel concept, and one I finally experience with the sleeve. Best of luck to all.
  9. I just had revision surgery on 1/30, band to sleeve! I had it all in one surgery as well as a hiatal hernia repair! I was under for about 3 hours! All went well! When I asked my Dr why Drs sometimes do it in separate surgeries he had 2 answers, first of all it depends on the pt and comorbities, how long can someone tolerate anesthesia ? Since just having sleeve surgery you are under for about 1 1/2 hrs! The second answer was interesting he said if he did in 2 surgeries he would make more $$$ which is so true ! Also in addition the pt has to take 2 separate LOAs if working! So in the end I would look for a surgeon who did it all in one surgery! good luck

    My journey

I had been obese since I had my first son at the age of 18. I would lose weight and then gain it. When I was 24 years old I wanted to get RNY but then I got really scared and didn't go through with it. 2001 I lost my mother to Breast CANCER. she was only 40 years old. She left 5 kids behind 2 were under age. I was able to get custody of one of my brothers but the youngest one his father sent him to Dominican Republic. We lost contact with him. I was depressed I was 22 years old with 2 kids of my own and my brother. Living at my in laws house. I just started to eat so much.. My weight just started to go up.. 2005 I decided to try to lose weight. I was eating right and exercising. I lost weight but not what I needed to lose. a year later i got pregnant with my 3 baby. Of course I gain all the weight and more. I was so depress but I couldn't stop myself I just kept on eating the wrong food. On 2011 around September or October I started researching weight loss surgery. I wasn't sure if my insurance would cover it. Somehow I got to the website of the New York bariatric group. I asked some questions. They answered me right away. He asked me questions and said I was a good candidate for weight loss surgery. He asked me if I wanted to go in to speak to a surgeon. I said sure they gave me an appointment for November. I meet my surgeon and they did a couple of test. He told me that I can get surgery. He explained to me the 3 different one that the insurance covers. I decided to get sleeved. By feb. 2012 I had seen all the doctors and got clearance from all. I went to see the surgeon and decided to get surgery March 6, 2012. I had my sleeve it was a little rough the first month but it was the best decision. In a year and 8 months after I was able to renew my vows. Before surgery I wore a size 22-24 the day of my wedding my wedding dress was a size 4. I went from weighing 278-123. I was really thin I asked my surgeon if I can gain 15-20 pounds. He said to becareful but we kept tracking everything to make sure my weight gain wouldn't get out of control. While tracking that I was having a lot acid reflux problems since 3 months after I was sleeved. My surgeon did a hiatal hernia repair 02/2013 to see if I would get some relief but it didn't work. So January 26, 2015 my surgeon decide to revised my sleeve to a RNY. Now I am recovering from my RNY. I feel so much better. I got immediate relief of acid after RNY also lost 12 pounds from the 20 i gained. I feel great

  12. Sorry you are experiencing some issues of unknown origin. I wonder what is causing the pain? Could scar tissue have built up already in the short time you've been banded? I agree with you about the lack of longterm data on the sleeve. It seems to be the most popular surgery for bandsters going for a revision but it probably wouldn't be the one I'd opt for 'next'. I've had complications with my band that also started a year after being banded, and I haven't lost any weight in a year. I'm pondering what my next step will be since I can't get any more fills (anything above 5.0 provokes esophegal spasms and now I've developed a heart arrythmia as well) and I'm relegated to doing traditional dieting just to keep off the weight I lost during the first year. I'll be curious to see what you end up deciding, so please keep us informed. I hope you will soon have your band-related issues resolved.
  13. I am at the point where my doctor said he will not do anymore fills that I would need a revision. so I began to re read all the info on the different surgeries. I really liked what I read about the duodenal switch. your stomach is removed but the bottom part where the hunger hormone is. the rest of the surgery can be reversed. but the part I liked the most was that the complications were less and ppl didn't have problems with regaining their wt. check it out.
  14. Okay so I am 9 months out. I have lost 83 total with only 66 being since I had surgery. I am discouraged and depressed. I know that some of my slowed success or failed success has been from not eating at all in the beginning due to nausea. Then not getting my protein in and falling back to old habits like eating carbs. However during the last couple of months I have tired so hard to eat right, get my protein in, exercise, and drink water but to no avail. It is still coming off slow or non existent at this point. I had a complete hysterectomy in August at the age of 28 so I don't know if that slowed me down or what. I have been seriously considering having the sleeve converted to duodenal switch which I wanted bypass all along but was talked out of it by family and friends. I just wanna know what everyone thinks. I wanna know if I have hit my bottom and I'm probably not gonna lose any more or what. Also if anyone has had it could you tell me the cost of the revision? Thanks
  15. Keep on your doctor. If you are having issues as you describe with no Fluid in your band something is wrong. It could be as simple as your stomach is irritated and swollen where the band sits. To answer your question insurance was the deciding factor for me. I was denied my request to revise to the sleeve. It probably would have been approved but I hadn't been going in for regular checkups. I can't see age being a factor in getting the sleeve. If it works today it will work when you're 80. However it is still just a tool. You have to eat the right foods and watch your caloric intake or it won't work either. Sounds like you're pretty disciplined with your band so you should have no problem with the sleeve. Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Why did you choose Gastric Sleeve?

I can give you a very rational reasons for my choice of the sleeve but in all honesty I had an irrational fear of bypass. That fear came from knowing ladies who had open bypass and going to my first bariatric info session. ..early 1990s I believe. I also went to a weight loss group that had a very obese member who was several years post bypass so it seemed like it failed. I was so terrified of the prospect that really the sleeve was my only option (i revised from band that I got in 2001). Now 3 years post sleeve. .uber happy, estatic with my choice as I lost 100 % of my excess and maintaining BUT I recognize my fear of bypass was not rational and based on outdated "experiences". I think they are both good procedures just learn the pros and cons of each.
  17. This is what I'm worried about. I need a revision from band to bypass or sleeve (consultation with a surgeon tomorrow!), and I'd like to tell my mother and father about it. The problem is, they seem to think my private medical business is everyone else's business, too. That's what they did with both of my band surgeries. They told my brother, they told my aunts and uncles, they told their employees and their customers, etc. We apparently have different definitions of "private information," lol. Part of the reason I don't want to tell people is that I've had issues with the band, and I already feel like enough of a failure, even though I was able to reach goal weight before regaining due to issues). I don't want the pressure of everyone judging me and watching me to see if I succeed with this one. I'm a very private person and it makes me uncomfortable to know that people are constantly watching what I put in my mouth (and yes, they do that when you tell them that you've had surgery).
  18. Hi All - thanks for reading and sharing any thoughts... I was banded in July 2013, and had a great first year. I've lost just over 100lbs. Starting around July 2014 (when i'd steadily increased from 4CC to 7CC in band) i was feeling a lot of reflux and suspected i was too tight. i had 1CC removed but symptoms continued. I then went through close to 6 months of having no Fluid for a month, then trying a small fill, and ultimately going back and having the fluid removed again. my symptoms often feel like my stomach is bloated and full of saliva - and sometimes, especially late at night when it's most uncomfortable, i end up vomitting and it's just bellyful of spit that comes out. i've had 2 upper GIs and 1 endoscopy and neither showed any issue with the band (slippage, etc). i had a 2nd opinion done last month and that doc concurred that the xrays show the band looks fine, but that i might just be in the small group of ppl who can't tolerate the band. he advised me to try a 1CC fill to see if i can tolerate any fluid at all - i tried that 2 weeks ago and have since had it removed. what's making me anxious now is that my stomach still hurts - still feels like fluid isn't always draining. sometimes i have a big cup of hot tea and then i feel it release down. up until now i've been set against having the sleeve. i'm just anxious about something that permanent and the brief history of data we have on longer term effects (will i need that part of my stomach when i'm 80?)... and in part i think that finality of decision was b/c i imagined i would be able to keep my band in. i lost my 100lbs with the band in with fluid in it - the last 6 months with fluid in and out have been a total standstill. i am close enough to goal weight and feeling healthy in a way that i could be ok if i didn't lose anymore - but i'm just nervous that these last 6 months don't actually show me i can maintain and they're more of an anomaly. i'm glad i haven't gained - but can i really keep it off long-term without some surgical help...? thinking much more about having the band removed and i'm just curious if anyone else has been in this same place - and if you were considering a revision to sleeve, what questions did you find helpful in ultimately making up your mind (in either direction)? thanks so much!
  19. Wow, I was kept for 2 nights after the surgery. I was told that they're more cautious with revision patients. I was up and out of bed walking the halls about 4 hours after surgery. I kept getting up and walking. That really helped move the gas. Gas pain was the only real pain I had!

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

WLS again? Absolutely yes! Lap-band surgery? Absolutely NOT! I'm currently on my second band (first one was replaced after I'd unknowingly lived with a profound slip for several years, and insurance wouldn't cover a revision to a different surgery), and I'm having problems with it now. My band decided out of the blue that it wouldn't tolerate me eating a raw carrot and I had a severe PB/sliming episode, and I'm pretty sure my band slipped as a result. I do not have it in me to go through a third band surgery, knowing what I now know about the success rates of the band. I want to not worry about getting sick and needing to vomit. I want to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and not worry. I want to not have to locate the bathroom in every restaurant I go to, in case my meal doesn't agree with me and I have to rush and go slime it up. I've got an appointment tomorrow to meet with a new surgeon and hopefully get a revision to either bypass or sleeve. I just can't do this anymore. I'm not saying that people can't be successful with the band (heck, I reached a normal BMI with my first one, then started gaining when I started having trouble), but I think people are more likely to be successful with another type of surgery. I will say that I'm definitely determined to succeed this time, so at least suffering with the band gave me that!
  21. losing_the_band

    Nothing but problems! :-(

I feel for you! I've had a bunch of issues, too, and have actually had my band replaced once already. The second one has started giving me trouble (I'm pretty sure it's slipped), so I'm at the point where I just want the damned thing out of me. I'm meeting with a surgeon tomorrow to see about getting a revision to either the sleeve or bypass. I'm leaning toward the bypass because between my PCOS and the way I had to eat with the band, my metabolism is completely messed up.

    Body rejecting Band

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this - and (sadly) so happy to see someone else posting a symptom similar to mine. I had surgery in July 2013 and had excellent results for first year and my body felt great. Then around July 2014 i started having some reflux so i went in and had some fluid removed. from there i started having all sorts of issues feeling like my stomach was bloated with saliva that wasn't draining - and often i'd end up vomitting. it was really painful. so each month i'd see my doctor and he'd remove all the fluid for a month to let me stomach rest and then refill with a smaller amount. this happened back and forth for 6 months. in that time i had 2 upper GIs and 1 endoscopy and neither showed any issues with the band (no slippage). i also recently got a 2nd opinion and that doc said i might just be in a small # of ppl who can't tolerate any fluid in the band (or the band itself). in late Jan we tried putting 1CC in, and i had that removed last week. Was already sad thinking maybe i just can't tolerate any fluid - but honestly i'm still having stomach aches. that bloated feeling and i can feel that fluid isn't draining. i'll have to have a big cup of hot tea to get the fluid to finally release and drain past the band (it's a weird sensation). my doc wants to revise to a sleeve but i'm not sure about it. i was happy to just leave the band in empty and keep going with my lifestyle changes, but i'm getting really scared that the stomach discomfort is continuing and maybe i need to have it removed... and then if i do - do i go to a sleeve? i'm not inclined to, but from what i've read it seems like doing both procedures at the same time is the more common practice. oy. -Anxious in Massachusetts
  23. I too worried!!! I had my revision from band to bypass done in May 2014 and honestly it was the easiest surgery I ever had! I think the key was I walked immediately and kept walking. Very minimal pain and I was home 12 hours after surgery. I am 4 pounds from a normal BMI now when I woke up from the surgery (had it done all at once) I was convinced I didn't have the bypass done because I felt so awesome hahaha
  24. Best of luck! I'm 4 weeks out from revision. It's very different this time around. My recovery was honestly much better for this procedure, not sure why. I feel so much better having that darn port out of me, too!!
  25. Banded 2010, revision to bypass on Thursday 2/3/15.. (Depending on scar tissue) Doctor has me on complete liquid diet for the next 2 days. I'm getting a little nervous. I know I've already had WLS once, but it seems strangely different this time. I can't explain it. Has anyone else experienced mixed emotions?
