    Almost 2 years out

I've been waiting for this conversation! I'm just over two years past surgery and I can certainly eat more. I've also gained some weight back. It's a constant struggle for me. Protein definitely fills me up fast. Hard boiled eggs especially. Pasta is almost never a good choice for me. I try to eat as little bread as I can. Hard liquor is off limits for me. Makes me sloppy. But I do notice an increased wine tolerance. :-( My wife is a food product developer for a healthy snack company. While that sounds cool, there's always Snacks at home. While they're healthy, if they weren't here I wouldn't eat them. I still have work to do.

  3. Every time a newbie asks this question, I feel compelled to offer this one piece of advice: ask the doctor how he proceeds with post-op pain management. So many weight loss patients complain of "shoulder gas" caused by the CO2 that is pumped into the abdominal cavity so that the doctor has some clear space to work with while using his surgical instruments. My surgeon said that he extracts as much as possible before closing up the incisions. I do not know why all surgeons do not do that. I had no shoulder gas at all. Oh, and another question I asked is where exactly the incisions will be in relation to belly buttons and waistbands.

    Book on self sabotaging

You have to come to the realization that you have to do what you need to do to get healthy. Stop thinking about it as losing weight and think about it as being healthy. When I get in those moods where I want to eat a half gallon of ice cream I think about how good I feel after losing 120lbs and how easily I could just put it right back on. Of course weight loss is a plus but you are trying to get healthy. Free yourself from food prison. Only you can do that. No book, no therapist, no one but you can do it. We are addicted to food point blank. If you want to let your addiction keep you prisoner for life then do it. Put the scale away and stop getting on it until you can wrap your head around the fact that it's not going to move everyday, every week or every month in some cases. If you just make good food choices then the weight will come off. You have to want it more then sabotaging yourself. If not then you won't get it.

Leepers, do you have anything that you so desperately want to fit in after all this is over? Like a goal outfit? I have one and I am getting it from my mom before I have my surgery, it's from a LONG time ago, but she still has it for me, just in case? I loved it it was the one and only time I lost weight and I was 21 and I just stopped eatting for a year? I will never do that again!!! I couldn't anyway I love food too much!!! lol? But it's a beautiful straight forest green crushed velvet gown, I never went to my prom in high school I was too fat for a pretty dress, and so when I lost that weight I bought this and only wore it one time to a Christmas party for the job I did at the time and I felt so beautiful. I have never felt as beautiful as I did that night, and I want to fit into that again. I was 150 lbs when I wore that gown, and I don't care if its something I will never wear I just want to fit in it and look good too!!! Maybe get something like that and hang it up in your room where you will see it everyday and it will be your reminder that the Pasta and donuts aren't going to get you into that outfit? Good luck!!!

No you're not rambling. I just think this is a big subject that needs to be addressed. Many of us will return to our old ways due to fear, being sexualized, and self consciousness. If those that face this issue, (me) don't get a handle of it and face it head on we will never succeed and there inlies the problem. That is why I am keeping my psychologist to help me through this once and for all. So good to have a support team with weight loss this time around!

That is a very interesting take on it blade! I know I've heard people say that even once they've lost the weight they still feel fat. Even in the way they move and carry themselves. And even though this is something we want for ourselves it's still a change. A good one, but a change nonetheless. Adjusting to change can be difficult, so maybe when we start to succeed we get scared of change and self sabotage? Sorry, now I'm rambling!

What to tell your young kids

I told my 6 year old sister that my doctor was going to make my stomach smaller so that I could be healthier. She thought it was fun that we would eat about the same amount. I didn't mention anything about weight loss etc, just that I was going to be healthier.

    Help

I everyone. I am beyond happy that I found this site. Like many of you, I have tried to lose weight for the past 7 years(I'm 25) and I just can't seem to lose it. I lose the weight and gain it right back.. My sister got sleeved on January and OMG she went from a size 18 to a small .. Amazing I know.. So at first, after seeing her have some complications, I said I can't do this, forget it... But just 3 days ago, I was trying to wear something for work and it wouldn't for properly and after trying few other outfits, I said that's it, I will have the surgery regardless what ends up being. Not for nothing, but I have an amazing life, I have a awesome job, I go to school which I graduate next fall, but I'm not happy with my weight. This is where the problem arises, I weight 200... I could of swore I was more but I was too scared to weigh my self. So 2 days ago I wanted to see how much I weighted and I was disappointed lol.. I calculated my BMi and it's 34 Uhg so frustrating.. Now some of you may say well wtf are u doing here, but that's not the case.. I am very self couscous and I don't ever go on dates bc I feel like I am huge (which 200 is not small) I am 5'4 also... I am registered for a seminar for Wednesday 10/2/13... Not sure if I qualify? Would I? I mean I do wear a size 16 so you would think I do? Right? I was always a size 4 until I turned 19.... I know it's wrong but should I gain a little weight? I did have a heart surgery in 2010 and my heart beats more than normal peoples so maybe they can consider that right? Worse comes to worse and my insurance say No, can I do it anyways paying cash? Will they allow me even though my BMi is not 35? I really want to be at least 130 and I have tried almost every single diet on the planet.. I just want some insight since I really want to do it but my family won't really support me since they still think I have a heart condition which I don't anymore.. I have decided I am going to do it even if it costs my life in the end... That's how serious I am .. And I have read so many of your stories and I am inspired.
  11. Was just on the 'Livestrong' site and saw an add for this plate. I would think it is probably easier to use than the other 'portion' plates I've seen. Have no connection with this company, just thought some folks may find it of value. EZ Weight Plate, Portion Control plate, weight loss, food measurement, diabetic plate

    Journey begins tomorrow!

I LOVE questions. Please feel free to ask. So you are lucky that your surgery is so fast. I had to wait 6 months for mine because I had to go through 6 months of monitored diet and nutritional visits before my insurance would cover it. All the tests that you are having are normal. I had 6 nutritional visits, psych eval, Gastric eval, cardio eval, pulmonary eval, and medical clearance from my primary doctor. I am glad that it took 6 months because I really learned alot from the nutritionist. I already had my sleep study because I have sleep apnea so I didn't need that one. I'm hoping that soon I will be done with the CPAP because I am getting so tired of it. I've been using it for 4 years now. My husband said that he doesn't hear me snoring anymore so I will need to have another sleep study to see if I can come off of the machine. Today I went for my 4th fill. I think I have hit the 'sweet spot' but we will see in a couple of days. You really can't tell on liquids. Which is what you have to be on for 24 hours after your fills. Anyway they said that I have lost 49% of my body weight. They want you to lose 50% in the first year and I am only a little over 5 months in so they said I was well above the curve. I have 45 lbs to go before I am out of the obese area. The doctor said my goal weight is anywhere between 185 and lower. So I am very excited at the moment. I have been under 200 since I was pregnant with my son 22 years ago. Please let me know how your journey is going. And as I said, ask questions. I love answering them. And what I can't answer I will do my best to find the answer for you.
  13. I was watching Oprah this afternoon and I could not believe all the wonderful non surgeical success stories. What caught my eye were two people (a woman who lost over 500lbs-she started out at 720lbs and a man who was well over 400lbs and is now normal size) who were able to deal with their "food" demons and overcame them enough to start eating right and moving enough to lose the weight. As inspiring as the stories were, I was a bit sad because I wondered what was wrong with me and why I opted to have surgery when there are people out there who are able to do this the "normal" and hardest and disciplined way. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
  14. Hi!!! I was revised from band to bypass on May 21, 2014. Omg I love my bypass! What a difference!!! I don't feel like I'm stuck all the time, I don't throw up, I don't have to find a barroom before I eat to make sure I can run there in time.. It's awesome! I was successful with my band lost all my weight 120 pounds in 9 months, kept it off for 5 years then bam one day I couldn't keep anything down even with an unfill. So revision was my option.. My band had eroded. I can tell you the revision surgery was easier for me than the band surgery. I knew I had to get up and walk ASAP after surgery because the gas pain killed me last time so I did!! I walked within 2 hours of surgery and kept walking. I was able to go home day after surgery and my recovery was amazing. Felt awesome! I even asked my doc if he really took out the band and did the rny I felt so good!! Feel free to pm me with any questions!!! And good luck!!

I didn't get to ride my bike today....yet. I might try to get it in after hubby goes to bed. I still don't like exercising in front of him. It was a pretty good day. I'm pretty used to not eating much now. In some ways I can see how being on this pre-op diet can be beneficial. Not just because of the weight loss but that when I am banded I'm already used to not eating hardly anything. Here's what I had today: (typical of everyday) whey protein shake 2scoops in 8oz slim milk 2 slimfast shakes (I'm allowed 3 a day but lately have only been drinking 2) 1 1/2 cups broccoli 1 cup butternut squash soup (90 cals) 1 1/2 cups stir fry veggies 1 diet Dr. Pepper That's around 1200 cals. And I'm really not hungry. The first few days of this pre-op diet I ate like three times as many veggies but not anymore. I'm actually not supposed to have soup but I've been eating progresso's hearty tomato and tried this organic squash soup. The squash soup is pretty nasty. I like squash. I've eaten a lot of it the past two weeks but the soup just wasn't right. It smelled like pumpkin pie and tasted like onion, garlic squash. It messed with my senses. I am so ready for my surgery date. Not much longer. I am on the downhill side now at least. Well, Goodnight. Hope everyone is doing good on their journeys!
  17. I was banded Nov. 19. I am feeling so much better this week. I was able to start soft foods and it's so nice to be off of the liquid diet. My port site really doesn't hurt anymore, and my incisions have almost healed. I can't believe the difference a week makes. I was walking for the first 2 weeks post-op, but I have now been able to start exercising on my "gazelle", which is nice since it's very cold outside here! I haven't lost any weight since my first week post-op, but I can tell a real difference in the way my clothes feel. I am a little worried about the lack of weight loss since I eat less than 800 calories a day, but I guess that will come with time and the first fill.....
  18. They are all tools... If one failed for you it wasn't because it wasn't the right surgery for you... It was because you were not ready to make the lifestyle changes you needed to in order for the tool to do it's job. No matter what surgery we have, we all have rules to live by. Don't follow the rules.. Don't get results... They are all tools that will work! If you do your part. If your stuffing cake, soda, chips down your throat being lazy not working out, whatever. It isn't going to work!!!! You are better off asking for a feeding tube than to keep having these revisions thinking that there going to do anything different than the last surgery did... It's what you put into it.. Yes I can go get bypass and definitely lose the weight. But It will alllllll come back if I don't follow the rules. There is no easy way out for us! We have to come to terms and make a life long commitment to change everything about our lifestyle and eating habits. I support every one of the surgery's there are out there... They all will help you... Pick the one you are comfortable with doing... Don't think one is better than the other or one you don't have to work as hard at.. blah blah.. Sure if you have a sweet tooth... I might consider the ones that cause dumping.. But I should know enough by now, to realize I can't eat that crap anymore if I want to be healthy! In moderation.. ha... I wish it were that easy... I sure as heck wouldn't be where I am today If I had the ability to have that kind of stuff in moderation... That's like telling a ex smoker, just one cigarette every now in then is okay... Yeah maybe for a few times, then it's back to the full blown addiction eventually... Food is like drugs... We are addicts.. Oh gosh... I can go on and on.. But.. I just felt like venting a little.. LOL
  19. I was banded a month after you and was recently unfilled totally due to a surgery I was having and I have gained about 5-7 lbs. I just went and had a total of 1cc put in and I am ready to lose the remaining weight that I need to lose. I got a treadmill right before Christmas and I have started to walk a mile each night. Maybe try to start some type of exercise. I know that is the last thing that anyone wants to do..but it will help....Good Luck to you!

    Treadmill or elliptical?

I think the elliptical is a GREAT tool for rehabilitating knees and is also great for providing low impact workouts. However, for long term cardio I prefer either a treadmill or walking outdoors. Whichever you choose I would recommend using your target heart rate as your fat burning guide. Don't trust the machines that tell you how many calories you burned based on your height and weight. For some odd reason ellipticals are notorious for being inaccurate. http://www.shape.com/fitness/cardio/how-inaccurate-are-calorie-counters-gym
  21. we were banded the same day! my weight loss is also 34 pounds! I had my second fill 4/23 and i feel some restriction (but it's that time of the month, so i'm wondering if it's from that or i still need to schedule my next fill) I (and my Dr.) think i'm doing great. there are days that i feel like, gosh, this is going to take FOREVER....on the days i don't see the scale move, but then i remember, i'm THIRTY FOUR pounds lighter already....ALREADY... in a little more than 2 months, 34 pounds GONE! i couldn't do that before the band. most of the weight i did do on my own because i had no restriction, but the band is going to help me not gain that back and continue to lose once i get to my sweet spot. I find i'm not that hungry, and most of the time, it's head hunger, not that i need to eat. I'm having a hard time eating enough calories and i need to start planning some meals to make sure i don't eat too little. I can't do most breads, if i can, it's usually 2 bites and i call it quits. Beef is NOT my friend. I even tried filet mignon for mother's day and it wasn't worth the work to eat it. I really need to start a regular exercise routine. i haven't done much more than walking here and there. I love to exercise, so i don't know what my problem is with not starting yet! I wish i had done my measurements before surgery. i have some OLD stats somewhere...i'll have to find them and compare to now (which i still haven't done!) You are doing great, and you are seeing results!! keep up the great work!!
  22. Hi All, You are all doing so great!! I was banded on March 4th, am a little more than 2 months post op, and have only lost 20 lbs!! I lost the 20lbs in my first 2 wks and have not really lost any real weight since then. Its making me very concerned, because I'm eating less and working out. I'm getting my 2nd fill on May 26th, so hopefully this will help me continue to lose weight. You are all doing so well! Keep up the good work!! =)

    Birth Control?

My surgeon recommended 2 forms of bc just to because of the major hormone changes that occur with rapid weight loss. I refuse to use hormonal bc so we were a condom couple until we started TTC. I figured if I could still get pregnant on the pill, I would rather just risk a condom and leave the hormones out of the equation.
  24. Ohhh yeah, this bugs me too. My doctor specifically discussed this with me when I brought up something similar (friend of a friend has had the sleeve, and was already asking about being cleared to eat crap again). He told me that ANYONE will lose weight in the first year or so - even those that eat total crap like fast food, high carb/fat. The sleeve will be controlling the portion sizing for quite some time, and unless you're bedridden, you'll lose due to the small amount of food you actually consume. The goal is to use this time (roughly 12-18 months) to reteach yourself how to eat HEALTHY. Protein first, then healthy veggies, then complex carbs and rarely eating the crap foods. The real purpose of this surgery is to give you the restriction to help you drop weight NOW, along with reducing or even eliminating the overwhelming hunger most of us feel (due to the hunger hormone ghrelin, which is produced in the stomach... that is almost completely removed when they take most of the stomach out). This allows you to make smarter food choices since you should not be driven with uncontrollable cravings and better able to make smart choices. I've also learned healthy versions of dishes I used to love that weren't all that good - so I can still have things I used to love, but they're not nearly as bad for me. It only takes a few months for the new eating style becomes habit. That is the ultimate goal - learn to eat good, healthy foods for the majority of the time, and still be able to have occasional indulgences. If a person has this surgery thinking they'll be able to eat everything they had eaten before - fast food, fried everything, drink and eat total crap - sure, they'll lose for a bit just because they can't physically get that much in their sleeve, but then as they get further out and it gets a bit easier to eat, they'll regain and gripe about how the sleeve "failed" to work for them. They are the ones that failed however. No one can do well on a diet consisting of high fat, carb and sodium for any length of time. Most crap foods have very little nutritional value as it is, so eating those regularly is just asking for failure. You can eat anything after 6-12 months. Cake, doughnuts, Cookies, bread, Pasta, fried foods, deep dish greasy pizza... Should you? NO. You should make those types of foods a very rare event.
  25. @@VSGAnn2014 I remember reading results from the National Weight Control Registry years ago (they track people who have maintained a significant weight loss for over 5 years, I believe) and they found these behaviors highly correlated with successful weight loss maintenance: regular exercise - closer to an hour per day than something minor like walking for 30 minutes 3 times per week weighing yourself at least once per week watching much less tv than the average person not giving yourself permission to take "diet holidays" -- I'll eat whatever I want on Sundays, or on vacation, etc., and be "good" the rest of the time.
