    August surgery ppl

SO, I have had my surgery August 1st at 10:45 AM at Crescent Medical Center in Lancaster, TX. I was super nervous. The nurse tried to do an IV on me but I was dehydrated from not being able to eat or drink anything the day before so she tried a second time for and IV and barely found that one. Side note: I hate IV's especially when it has to get done twice. I went into the OR and they didn't countdown they just put me to sleep. I awakened in recovery, my husband was there next to me. After my vitals were checked, they moved me to my room which was not that comfortable and quite small. She said he had done so many surgeries that morning that they ran out of the normal room so I was put in ICU. I did not like the gas pain at all. The way everyone described the gas pain is nothing like it was for some odd reason. It was very uncomfortable, I could not get comfortable at all, I even start crying to my husband because I was so frustrated at the gas pain. It was this annoying ball of air bouncing around my stomach and chest that I could not get rid of. They gave me some chewable pill to help with gas; that did not help me at all!! The gas pain was so bad, I did not care about the soreness and pain of my 5 incisions. My husband said I was cursing up a storm. The nurse said I had 5 goals to reach before I could discharged: urinating, drinking 2 cups of water, using my spirometer, pain had to be below a 5 or getting better, and gas pain had to be getting better. They did insert a catheter in me and did the leak test; both whilst I was sleeping. My urine was green for the first day because of the leak test. I kept drinking water, it helped my gas pain a lot because I was replacing the gas with water in my stomach so I began burping which helped a lot. I was discharge 3 hours after surgery and went to a follow up apt two days later and that was it. I have not had a bowel movement yet, I was told if I has had a BM in 5 days since surgery that I need to get Imodium to help with constipation. I have passed gas which helped so much but still no BM> All I have been consuming and water and maybe 1 sip of protein drink since surgery. Since starting this journey I weighed 287 At the time of surgery I weighed 277 As of right now I weigh 267.2; and this is only 4 days out from surgery. I still crave some foods but I have self control and I know of I lost this much weight without getting out of bed, imagine when I began eating healthy and working out. You all please walk!! Walk, walk, walk, sip, sip, sip!! The gas pain will make you feel really crappy but walk and sip, you got this. Yes I was frustrated and still get frustrated but I push through. Goodluck you August sleevers!!

    Depression Meds post op

Your first several sentences are exactly what I felt, although to be honest, I am still (After 10 years) trying to find a complete remission of anxiety. I don't think the average person understands how much these mental issues physiologically affect someone. Many a friend had an isolated bout of anxiety and as I walked them through it, they would often remark "Boy you're good at this" and then after it was over "Is this literally what you deal with, all the time" - Yep. Sucks doesn't it? I wouldn't wish these things on anyone. And frankly I wish mental disorders didn't have such negative connotations against them.

    July Gastric Bypass?

Hello everyone, I am 10 days post-op and man am I bored. I want to clean. It’s something I do a lot and I can’t really bend without pain and I don’t think my surgeon would want me using the swifter and hand vacuum. So, I’m pretty bored. Hate watching tv because it makes me “head hungry”. So yea, I have two more weeks before anything major. I go back to week in three weeks. Also my progress has been SLOW. For my weight I should have lost 10-30 lbs in the first ten days. I lost like 5-7. I lost 15lbs in the pre-op diet so I wasn’t expecting a stall so soon. I was stalled for like four days. So yea, that’s where I’m at if anyone has any advice or words of encouragement.

    Caloric Intake

I was sleeved 7/12, started tracking agin 7/14 my 2nd day home. Here is my 1st week of calorie intake. 7/14-205, 7/15-200, 7/16-285, 7/17-341, 7/18-351, 7/19-392 . I hit week 3 this past Thursday and I've just been getting in 500 calories the last 4 days. I'm having a hard time hitting my numbers (protein and water) because I get super full very quickly with soft foods.

    The regain posts

OK, wow 10 pages..... I read like....one. Too much drama. I am a poster from way back. Just popped on for a few comments cause the title applied to me right now.. How's everyone doing....?? Here's my imput from my experience. We all are getting or got the surgery because we COULDN'T lose the weight or always put it back on.........desperate....last ditch effort. And.....for me it worked. I lost the weight. But As it is not a magic bullet, some was the surgery and most was my dieting & exercise effort. (go figure) So, just like always in the past .......I regained (some. not all) When the benefits of the suregery wore off and hunger and cravings returned.....I, of course went back to some bad habits. Put on 30 lbs. So here's the punchline.......Of course I know what will work. And now, with no other options available I simply have to get back to what I was doing after surgery. And it will come back off.....And I will continue to struggle with cravings and diet. Sorry guys. Those are the facts. Everybody has their own way of doing it, and all you can do is accept it and get it done. Have a nice day guys. Hey.....no- one can force anyone to accept their views on anything here..... so the drama is kinda wasted.
  6. I had vsg surgery about a week and a half ago. (7/24) Everything going great until I woke up with sharp pain under my left rib cage yesterday morning. Hurt to take a deep breath, cough, sneeze, laugh, etc. Sometimes would radiate to my shoulder/collar bone. Pain continues today. I’ve had similar pain like this intermittently since surgery. Originally it was gas but 10-11 days out? I don’t think so.... Saw my surgeon yesterday and he felt it was muscular/nerve pain. Advised warm soaks. I don’t have fever/chills, SOB, increased heart rate, etc. Although so scared that I have a leak!! Has anyone else gone through this? I’m debating whether I should take myself to ER and get scanned for piece of mind........Help!

    Seafood

I ate salmon at about 4 weeks post op, shrimp at 8 weeks, and other fish closer to 10 weeks. I wouldn't say any seafood is off limits for me now, depending on the preparation. I'd just recommend be patient and all those things can be integrated back in a couple months. It can take up to 3 months for your stomach to fully heal. I'd recommend treating it like a new born baby.

    On to Purees, suggestions?

I’m not a super spicy eater, maybe a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10, but I try everything. I’m not yet at 3 months out and I’ve had some pretty darn spicy stuff already with no trouble. I test it like I do every new food (I’m still introducing my stomach to everything). I take a couple small bites, chew to purée and them give it a couple hours to see how it handles it. If I’m good, I know this is something I could probably have among company or out with friends, no problem. I’ve not had trouble with a single thing yet except dairy products and I had a little trouble before surgery...it’s just worse now. But wasabi, chili peppers...no reaction.

    Seafood

All plans are different I am 10 day post op and still on liquids phase 2 but on phase 3 14 to 20 day after surgery we can have chopped shrimp salad. I am also with you because I am a big seafood eater. I just hope my taste buds still like it, my taste buds have changed some of the stuff like yogurt and jello now I can not stand. Seafood

At about 10 days out, it sounds way too early for ceviche .... But when you're cleared for all foods, I've had no problem with any food, including ceviche, and lots of different seafoods, raw and cooked.

    Depression Meds post op

Thanks to everyone that replied. The worst thing I have ever gone through was the sudden need for psychiatric meds 10 years ago. I would rather have a broken bone than go through the 2 or 3 weeks it took to find a combination of drugs that worked. I will talk to my psychologist about a possible replacement for cymbalta and ask about the siblingual Lamotrogine. I really appreciate the help.

    Preparing for the dead😮

Just had surgery the 23rd. Hit 10,000 steps a day on day 10. It's more the energy to do more. I really don't have anything left after that. I was fairly active before so I really am looking forward to doctors giving me the green light.

    Partner’s weight

DH gained 5-10 lbs my first few months post op. Recently he’s lost 15ish. He’s learning to control his portions and he’s eating the healthier foods I’ve been cooking.
  14. Today I am three months post gastric bypass. I've lost 54 pounds so far, and have been taking my measurements monthly. Everything is progressing as I would like, but when I took my arm measurements they went up (despite using the same methodology as past months). The day before surgery, the widest part of my arm was 21.5, at one month it was 19, at two months it was still 19, but at three months it was 20.5. Is this normal? Just FYI, I've been doing water aerobics 4x a week for an hour each time, which includes upper body strengthening.
  15. Omg this post is TMI but for others who can understand: I FINALLY had a BM on day 4 postop. I had to strain a little which made me nervous but I feel like 10 pounds lighter and so much less uncomfortable!! Phewwwwwww!!
  16. And folks I'll weigh also. I am 5ft 8in , according to BMI AND former surgeon my goal should be 138 based also on body frame size. That ain't gonna happen, not even on a sunny day. My personal dream goal is 175/size15 Junior, I'm actually an overgrown Junior, a C cup, don't have the bustiness regular and woman/misses require. I would accept anything below 198, at 72 borderline anorexia isn't good for me, I am a presurgical 321, and before anyone asks I HAVE lost over 10% of my highest weight so I am trying as hard as people 1/2 my age, I just have the BMR of a 🐛slug on antidepressants, I still make my slime trail but it's about an inch an hour.

    Surgical Glue.....

I'm at day 10; It appears as if I have glue and stitches, the doctor told me it is healing nicely. The glue is beginning to flake off and I am starting to get the "healing" itching on the smaller incisions. I'm just going to let it work itself out for now. But if you are concerned reach out to your doctor!

    I feel scared and ashamed...

I was nervous as well but honestly I was more afraid of what my Years of obesity was doing to my health. I was on blood pressure meds for 10 Years, was pre diabeti, had sleep apnea, back issues, etc. There was no doubt in my mind that my weight was going to kill me at some point. At the encouragement of my Wife, Kids and Parents, I reluctantly went through with the VSG and it was the best decision I have ever made for myself. ALL of my health issues have been reversed and I feel like a new person. I am no longer ashamed of “letting myself go” regarding weight for all those Years. The past is done and I am now living in the moment and am excited about the future. I understand what you are going through but my advice would be to try and focus on the light at the end of the tunnel. Best of luck!

    Electrolytes

On the Gatorade G2 issue...I travel all over the country because of my Job (Including Alaska). It is part of my normal routine after landing to get some drinks because I don't like water and I don't like paying hotel chains $4 for a drink I could buy elsewhere for a buck. In the past, I always first looked for Vitamin Water, but they are very hard to find - CVS stores are a hit and miss, and Wal-mart usually has it less than 10% of the time. So my fallback was Gatorade G2, but as of lately, that is almost nonexistent in CVSs and Walmarts. I am convinced that vast areas of the country simply do not like low calorie beverages. In a pinch, I will buy half liter spring water (No purified for me, can't stand the reverse-osmosis taste) and dump in crystal light or hawaiian punch packets. They aren't particularly tasty because they do not really dissolve, but it beats a full sugar replacement. I haven't traveled yet for work after my surgery, but I'm already forming plans. Like it or not, I think crystal light is going to be on the menu.

    PCOS

I've never had excessive hair, probably being Nordic in nature I guess...I have PCOS and for the last 10 years I've been on low dose birth control, that's a long rear time to be without a period. My hormones have been wonky regarding my mood and related to PCOS, I've not had to take metformin anymore, never noted a difference that medication made anyway. My body 10 months out is still trying to find the new normal, I lift weights and have always been active even 60 plus pounds heavier I think the last 30 some odd pounds are being stubborn because of my meds and PCOS or all of the above. I do need to start having periods again normal ones...I also had heavy periods constantly from 13 on. As I got heavier I had worse symptoms. At some point in the near future, I'd like to be off birth control, I'm single and not sexually active so why bother?
  24. This is one of my main motivators to pursue WLS. I remember once getting the inevitable lecture when seeing a doctor about a UTI. He treated it, but wanted to spend quite a long badgering me about my weight. I came back for a followup a week later to get my blood test results, and in that week I had lost 3 lbs... a very good loss for a week I think. He spent at least 10 minutes in the followup badgering me instead of saying, "I'm glad you took my advice, good job on the loss." I didn't see a doctor after that for many years.
  25. Don’t stress! And you’ve lost over 30 lbs in just over 3 weeks!! That’s 10 lbs a week!
