  1. My surgeon asked what my goal weight was & I suggested 60kg & a BMI of about 23 which was the lowest weight I’d reach whenever I tried to lose in the past. I was always told I was a medium to large frame so the higher end of the BMI range seemed reasonable. He thought it was achievable too. Hit my goal at 6 months & then lost another about 12kg trying to find the balance in the first year of maintenance. I generally sit at 49kg now (+/-500g) though I sat at 48.5 (+/-500g) for a couple of months once I stabilised. The lowest weight I’ve reached was 47.9kg last month but that was an anomaly. Yes, I did look thin at first & family would comment I looked drawn but everything seems to have resettled & I look fine now. Funny thing is I actually have a smallish frame so I can carry my lower weight & BMI. I maintain at about 1200 calories but I’m not very active. Some days I feel hungry others I don’t. My hunger started coming back at about 18 months or so. My restriction is still active. Generally I eat to routine to allow for times I’m not hungry & also allow for days I am so I ensure I still eat about 1200 calories. I’m a big believer in finding the right balance for you. You have to be able to maintain your weight & be happy living your life. You may be able to maintain at a lower weight but are the costs (more restricted diet, increased activity) worth how it may restrict your life. For you, the answer may be yes but for someone else it may be no. Both answers are correct. A healthy, happy life should be more important than a number on the scale or the size label in your clothes. Of course those numbers can be incredibly empowering but the reality is they’re not as important as health & happiness. But that’s my opinion.

    Good evening, so I did not do the surgery but I did join a weight loss done right program in my area on January 5 and as of today I have lost 68 pounds, (only 32 more to go) the program is very strict, but very easy and the food is quite good!! When it comes to eating out which we do, I am very committed and I basically tell the server immediately, I am sorry to be a pain but I am on a very strict diet so can you please relay to the kitchen staff that my food can have no seasoning, no butter, no oil, everything needs to be completely plain. Also I ask as many questions as needed, such as actual ounces, sauces etc. I actually use a brown bread that I purchase from bariatric pal, and I bring one or two slices with me, I either bring my own seasoning or I just use their salt and pepper. When it comes to salad dressing again I bring my own or I order just plain white vinegar. I usually order a 6 ounce steak or the 8 ounce salmon, again no butter, no seasoning, no oil. I get a double order of plain steamed broccoli and a side salad with only lettuce, tomato and cucumber. I will sometimes bring my own cucumber and hearts of palm. lol just carry a larger than usual purse, honestly no one cares and you should be very proud of yourself for loosing the weight and especially proud of adhering to the food restrictions because that shows your strength. I am not embarrassed or ashamed of ordering specifically as I know I am a healthier , happier and skinnier me. LOL i wish you the best of luck, you’ve got this!!!!
  3. I only told my parents and hubby. Afterwards when I was losing noticeable weight, my sister told me I took the easy way out. She was always skinny and I think she actually got jealous. As far as everyone else, I told them I was eating less and getting more exercise. It's the truth. I feel that nobody needs to know my business. If I feel comfortable telling someone than so be it. If I don't that is ok too.
  4. I've told everyone and even posted it on Facebook. Only one person, someone I barely know, was negative. People are happy to see I'm taking steps to improve my health. My parents are even traveling to my city and staying in a hotel near me (I have a tiny apartment) so they can take care of me after surgery. I am not good at telling lies, so if someone asked me why I was going to be out of work or how I was losing the weight, I wouldn't be able to make something up. It's just easier for me this way. Anyone who doesn't like it can lump it.

    5 year post gastric bypass weight gain

    You look great, but I am sure you definitely want to take off that regain! I have heard those "reset" liquid diets are a bunch of bs - really the reason for the liquid diet right after surgery is to protect the staples/sutures and the new stomach, not to lose weight faster. Instead, I would focus on the basics: protein and veggies, and water and I know for me, I only have ever lost weight when I kept track of calories/macros. (I haven't had surgery yet, but I plan to track after surgery too). We're here for you! You can do it!

    5 year post gastric bypass weight gain

    How much did you originally lose when you had the bypass? I am very curious to your story. I am 9 months out and am now "too skinny". I can't maintain and keep losing. I look sickly. Did this happen to you? A lot of people say that in year 2 I should start to gain weight again. Is this true?

    Artificial Sweeteners?

    I’m always on the fence with artificial sweeteners. There’s no real way to escape them if you are on a low calorie diet. But I do understand the concerns especially since it’s becoming easier to consume larger amounts than recommended because they are unavoidable. I try to exclusively use Stevia or Erythritol.   9. Hello All, after being away for quite some time I am BACK to inspire, motivate, encourage and to be encouraged. I had my gastric bypass in Sept of 2015 and today I weighed myself and the SHOCK of seeing the scale read 201after 5 years was a SLAP in the face. Now today I need to lose 35 pounds. I need all of your help and encouragement. How do you lose weigh post gastric bypass? Can my stomach shrink? Has anyone else had this experience? Help need to reach my goal weight again.   10. Hello All, after being away for quite some time I am BACK to inspire, motivate, encourage and to be encouraged. I had my gastric bypass in Sept of 2015 and today I weighed myself and the SHOCK of seeing the scale read 190+ after 5 years was a SLAP in the face. Now today I need to lose 35 pounds. I need all of your help and encouragement. How do you lose weigh post gastric bypass? Can my stomach shrink? Has anyone else had this experience?  Help need to reach my goal weight again.     Menstruation after VSG

    I was already post-menopausal when I had surgery, but A LOT of women have screwed up hormones the first few weeks or months after surgery. Weird cycles, mood swings, etc. Not sure about the stomach hormone thing, but I've read that estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it's released when you lose weight rapidly (so maybe those hormones are still left to come for you, unfortunately!). It does stabilize after awhile, though.

    May Surgeries - check in!

    Totally agree with the tiredness and resting. I am not one to nap but I feel like that's all I do off and on all day every day. I'm guessing it's the lack of energy (food). And also agree with taking time to heal. I was told I couldn't do weights or the gym til at least 4-6 weeks outs. Hell, they told me not to even lift anything more than 5-10lbs, no lifting, bending, reaching, not to even load or unload the dishwasher or do laundry. But I get it. Cause a few times I've done some of those things and right away feel that burning and tugging inside where the incisions are so YES, take it easy and take time to heal. DON'T RUSH THINGS!

    May Surgeries - check in!

    Hello and welcome to the forum. I am 5 weeks post op, and my best advice is to take it slow with your diet and follow your doctor’s progression plan. Also, I thought after 2 weeks, I would be fully recovered and able to workout and move on with my life, but that has not been the case for me. I went to the gym for the first time this morning and was only able to walk a mile and do a few reps of arm exercises with weights. I recently spoke with my doctor, and she said it could take 8 weeks to find your energy and strength again. I wish I had known that so I wouldn’t have felt like such a baby the past few weeks because I was so tired. Be gentle with yourself and take it easy to allow your body the chance to heal! I look forward to to hearing how you are doing in a few weeks!

    Stall?

    Hi all, Pre-op weight was 298. Weight on day of surgery (4/27) was 289. Current weight is 271. I’ve been at 271 for 2 weeks now. Any advice? Did anyone else go through this?

    Artificial Sweeteners?

    A lot of people are anti-artificial sweeteners because they are "chemicals" and therefore must be "bad". Well, a banana is made up of chemicals. Everything on earth is made up of chemical elements. Also, arsenic is "natural". Doesn't make it good for you. There were a few small studies at one point that looked like they suggested what Dr. Weiner states in his video (that artificial sweeteners lead to weight gain, by one mechanism or another). However, that does not seem to be the case based on better, newer, larger studies. I think for some people, eating artificial sugar can make them "crave" real sugar, but I find I have the opposite reaction. I add some artificially sweetened flavor packets to my water (I actually dilute them more than instructed) and that satisfies my sweet tooth. I do find that if I have real sugar (other than fruit) or even bread, I crave sugar. Personally, I don't like stevia. It doesn't have the sharp, clean sugar taste that other sweeteners have. It just tastes metallic and flat to me, so all those fake ice creams are icky. But any other fake sugar is a-okay in my book. I know some people have tummy troubles from certain ones, so they should definitely not use that one, but I don't seem to have issues.

    Diet question

    plateaus are a normal part of weight loss. I just stuck to my program, stayed off the scale for a few days, and my weight loss would eventually start back up. Plateaus usually last 1-3 weeks. re: Greek yogurt. I've had that almost every day for breakfast for the last six years - that's been my usual breakfast since soon after I had surgery in 2015. A denser protein does tend to keep you satisfied longer, but there's definitely nothing wrong with eating Greek yogurt! and yes - I usually have a morning snack and an afternoon snack - I just make sure to work the calories in to my meal plan for the day. I eat all the stuff you mentioned - beans, seeds, fruit. I can't remember when I added them - but probably around where you are now. Check with your clinic and see if it's OK to start adding them.

    Pregnant 4 months post op

    i had the surgery November 29 2010 found out i was pregnant ( while on nuvaring) in june . I had lost a little over 50 lbs and was told that the amount of weight loss causes the estrogen from your fat cells to release this is why the birth control did not work. They did not tell me this before surgery. I actually had a great pregnancy this was my 3rd. i gained 25 lbs they monitored me closely and let some of the fluid out of my band . i had more ultrasounds to make sure the baby was growing which was great to me since i could see her more. i craved fruit salad . i had a scheduled C-section due to my other 2 being a c-section. I made sure i took my vitamins and tried to eat healthy . The end of pregnancy i had more acid reflux but that's pretty common. she came out a healthy 7 lbs 8 oz i breastfeed for 3 months and got back to prepregnancy weight loss at 6 months after. i think it was a little over a year after before i added a fill back to my band.
  18. Very interesting topic! I was 231 lbs pre surgery and set my goal at 160 as that was a weight I'd maintained for much of my adult life before piling on the pounds. I got to that about a month ago, and despite now trying to up my calories and maintain at that weight I'm still losing. So maybe your final weight does choose you?
  19. My lowest adult weight was 153, many years ago on WW. I am 5'3", so that's still overweight for me, but I looked and felt great. I am curvy, and I don't feel like I was meant to be as tiny as the BMI chart says for my height. The most important thing to me is how I feel. I am not too worried about the number on the scale.     Diet question

    Hello, I am almost three months out and I have hit the dreaded plateau for two weeks now without any weight loss. I am told by my NUT to stick with the program, but I really feel bored with my diet. for breakfast, when I don't wat eggs, I eat feta and gouda cheese or low fat greek yogurt, but I read somewhere that these go down quickly and may not be considered "solid food" as such, and cause one to get hungry much sooner. For lunch and dinner I eat a small piece of chicken and grilled veggies. I don't have fruits. I try to get as much water in between as I can. I also feel hungry just an hour or two after the meal. Any of you experience the same? Do you snack or only do three meals a day? I exercise at least three days a week. I am also curious to learn your diets. For instance, how did you break the plateau? do you eat lentil and fava beans (I love both!), fruits, seeds, and if so when did you introduce them after surgery. Many thanks.
  21. My doctor is requesting a weight loss history letter to be sent along to insurance to gain approval what exactly is the insurance looking for? Because I was not 40bmi before.
  22. There are a couple of general adages to go by: 1: The more you have to lose the more you’ll lose in the beginning. 2: You will lose at the rate that’s best for you. Some people lose slowly, others more quickly but both are right. It’s not a race or a competition. 3: The closer you are to goal, the more slowly you’ll lose. Simple things we say but all are true. Honestly, the reason why this has been the most successful weight loss experience I’ve ever had (& I’ve done a lot: diets, clubs, medications, ...) is that I’ve actually stuck to the changes I made to my diet to lose the weight. In the past, I’d reach my goal & then I’d slowly but surely go back to how I used to eat & I’d start to gain again sometimes within a week or so. I’ve never stuck to it as I am now. That has been the difference for me. Good luck.

Now, I tend to be flashy and like bright colors, so it may not be for everyone, but I LOVE it, and it covers my belly flap and upper legs which have a ton of loose skin. I love it so much I will buy more when I lose more weight. I have 2 suits from that brand and they are both great. It's a 2 piece with shorts underneath. The brand is Esprlia.   24. I went to Blossom in Aug 2020. I went alone. I flew from NJ to Vegas. I had a companion from Blossom. She was very helpful after the surgery. During this time, Blossom did not allow guests in their buildings. A guest would have been sitting in the hotel alone. I had no issues with the plane ride. I just took my time.   25. I am 9 years post op and about a year ago I started vomiting after I ate a few times a week. About 4 months ago I started vomiting everything I ate. I've lost so much weight I look like death. I had an endoscopy done and they said my pouch was almost completely closed and they ballooned it to open it. It was better for 2 weeks and then I started vomiting again. In 4 months I have went from 175 to 120. I have had to leave work and can barely walk around I'm so weak. Has anyone else dealt with this? I finally found a bariatric specialist and will see her soon. But it's killing me that my kids are literally watching me die. I'm so malnourished its crazy
