@@OldMomOf3 Ps. Carbs come from things like: Bariatric Advantage bars, honey in tea, nuts, fruit, Greek yogurt or a splash of apple juice in Water. No starches or processed sugars at all. I just wanted to add something about this. I am not a sugar Nazi but I want to point out that your body does not know one sugar from another. It does not discriminate sugar from fruit VS. a tablespoon of sugar. I personally stay away from fruit at this stage in tha game because I can get glucose from my stored glycogen and Protein. Sure it tastes great but it is not needed to survive. If you are going to eat fruit I would just sugest that you also eat protein with it to cease hunger because sugar in any form with tend to make you more hungry and faster, not to mention you will crave more and more. Just a suggestion.

  3. Hi there and welcome! This is a great site for researching information about weight loss surgery, getting and giving support to others who are thinking about getting WLS or have already had this surgery and also venting when there just isn't anyone to share you concerns with. I am a RNY gastric bypass patient who is 7 months post op. This surgery was all about getting healthier for me. Weight loss was secondary as I was in a bit of trouble health wise. I currently have psoriatic arthritis, hypothyroidism and degenerative spine disease. Prior to surgery I had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, uncontrollable reflux/gerd and stage 3 kidney disease. The kidney disease is what pushed me to have this surgery. At my check in with my nephrologist in February, I was told that my kidney function was normal and I was no longer at risk. I chose bypass because I was informed it would resolve my reflux and the sleeve would make this worse. I had also done a lot of research and learned that the band was not an option given how many people have to have it revised to a bypass down the road. Immediately following surgery my diabetes and reflux were completely gone! Within 4 weeks post op my kidney function had improved and my cholesterol was normal. I was removed from all medications with the exception of hypothyroid replacement and a beta blocker used for the prevention of migraines. I was on a ton of medications. My recovery was text book. I followed all of the rules and continue to do so and I believe this is why I have been so successful. I am down over 90lbs with 53 to go. I would agree that the 10 day pre-op diet is challenging but very doable and it sets you up for success. For me the toughest part was the puréed diet. Ugh! I just did not tolerate blended meats and I don't tolerate Beans of any kind. They cause me to gag and vomit.during that stage I lived on Protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt and creamed Soups. This surgery was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. There was not ever one second that I regretted it. I can eat anything I want without getting sick. My body craves good protein and good carbs. My sugar addiction is completely gone. I love to get exercise when I used to hurt so bad that I could not move. This week I discovered that I can sit on the floor with both my legs crossed Indian style. Do you know how long it's been since I could do that? I can literally run up and down the stairs when I used to suffer just to get up a small flight. I look and feel fantastic. People that have not seen me for a while are shocked at how great I look. I used to hate shopping, now I love trying on new clothes. It is a blast! Insurance covered everything for me with the exception of co pays. It took 9 months to get through the process mostly because of the six month supervised diet. That time was critical to helping me build good behaviors. This surgery is NOT the easy way out, it requires hard work every single day. My new pouch is a tool I use to help make good nutrition possible. I wish you the best of luck. Please feel free to reach out, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

    Come on June 8th

@@alindsey June 2nd here and I am ridiculously excited. Right now I'm in the "try it before you buy it" stage...or should I say try it before investing in a 60lb tub of it. LOL Two months ago I started "training" myself to like yogurt and that has been going very well. I started with the yummy whipped sugary and have worked my way to down to plain greek yogurt with a bit of flavored crystal light powder stirred it. It has become a "habit" now and I can now relax about greek yogurt being a part of my daily menu...without wanting to gag! I'm working through some unjury packets that I bought to try...and they are tasty and mix up beautifully. I really like the chicken flavored broth! I'm also working through some Syntax nectar flavor samples...Fuzzy Navel is yum yum yummy! I want to make sure I make it through the pre/post-op liquid stage without having to think too much. I just want to be able to go to my kitchen and know whatever I grab to pour in me tastes good. I'm not waiting to be in the middle of it to have to figure it out!

What did you have during your post op diet? Is spup, jello and yogurts all we can have?
  6. I am 6 days post op, I have been on full liquids since Friday. Yogurt, cream soups and pudding are all on my list as long as I am watering them down. I have just been using a little bit of unsweetened almond milk to do that. I was on a 2 week liquid diet post op. The struggle is real, but I don't dare do anything until I am told. My biggest fear is that if I do I'll postpone getting back to work. Pureed foods are next after I see my dr on Thursday. I'm getting closer to soft foods and I can't wait.

I've never worried about calcium. I get plenty of calcium through food (yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, etc)

    April 6 sleeve!

I had surgery done on 4/14/15 it has been 6 days I want to eat everything, i feel like I'm starving. Day 1 I had only water and ice chips day 2,3&4 I had water and protein shakes, day 5 I had a little bit of Greek yogurt with some chocolate protein powder mixed in it (approx. 2oz) and some chicken broth, not at the same time, but during the day, day 6 I had 1 apple sauce no sugar added organic. 3.5 oz. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to have these things in my first week but I feel great. Keeping all fluid down and incisions are healing good. My information pack I got to refer to after surgery says I can have things that can slip through a funnel. I'm hoping what I'm doing is ok. I've tried calling my Drs office to ask but the time difference between where I had the procedure and where I live is a problem. ( I went to another state to do my sleeve). Someone please let me know if what I'm doing is DANGEROUS.
  9. Benefibre, chia seeds in my yogurt and some smooth move tea (a couple x's a week) are the only things that seem to work for me right now. It has changed over time. At one point the only thing that worked was prunes in warm water...then it stopped working and since I really didn't care for them...I stopped it. Every few months though, it seems i have to switch things up again. Most importantly I must keep up my water intake or nothing works for me
  10. Thank you all very much for your advice, help and encouragement!! I drink at least 75 ounces of Water each day, eat 600 - 700 calories, including my 60 - 70 gm. of Protein. Breakfast is: 1/2 cup nf cottage cheese with 1/4 cup of apple slices, or 4 oz. ff Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup berries, or 2 egg whites with 1 oz low fat cheese, or 1/2 cup of Cream of Wheat with 1/2 scoop of Protein Powder. Snack is an 8 oz. protein shake. Lunch is: 2 oz. grilled chicken with 1/2 cup of Soup, or 1/2 cup of carrots or cucumbers, or 2 oz. of turkey with 1/2 cup of veggies, or 1/2 cup of lentil or veggie soup with 1 oz. of lf cheese, or ff Greek yogurt with veggies. Dinner is: 2 oz. grilled chicken with 1/2 cup veggies, or 2 oz. grilled or broiled fish with veggies, or 2 oz. tuna with veggies, or 2 oz. turkey with veggies. I don't usually have fruit due to the sugar content. The carbs I get are those that are in the Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Cream of Wheat or protein shakes. I am going to try the 5 day pouch test and see how that goes. The only good thing my doctor had to say was about my A1C going down. Size wise I have gone down from a size 24 or a 2X, to size 18 or XL. Which I am very happy about, even though my doctor said "only pounds count." But clothing size counts to me, even if it doesn't to him! I am going to try very hard to stay positive!! I am also going to keep walking and jogging. My miles are tracked by our 100 Mile Club and I have 164 miles so far.
  11. I am 1 year and 7 months out and up until yesterday I have had less than 5 shakes the whole time. They are so disgusting tasting to me. If, however, you would like to drink them, there isn't anything wrong with that and like someone else said it gives you a nice jump on your Protein. I have found recently that if I drink a blended version where I add in Protein powder, almond milk, greek yogurt, and PB2 or any variety of flavors you enjoy, it tastes a lot like a milkshake, the calories can be quite low, it is portable, and the protein can be epic compared to trying to eat the same amount.

I definitely second tracking your intake in MyFitnessPal. It's easier to track total calories, Protein and carbs. You could be eating too few calories and/or too little protein. Go back to basics. Really really focus on protein. meat, eggs, cheese, Greek yogurt. Also, your "hunger" could be acid. I thought I was hungry constantly until I found out it was acid. A PPI fixed that and now I don't need it at all at almost six months out. Check with your doctor.

I realize this is controversial, but some of us are very carb sensitive. During the weight loss phase I drastically reduced and even eliminate all sugar sources. That included fruit. When I got smart, i even eliminated Protein bars (too high carbs). Examples, if I ate a taco, it was wrapped in lettuce not a taco shell. Yogurt - looked for lower carb/less sweetened high protein greek yogurts. No fruit, lots of low carb veggies. No shame in eating 4 to 6 "mini meals" a day - that is the right thing to do. They should all essentially be protein and veggies with just a smidge of a carb source. How is your Water and Vitamin consumption? do you know about water loading between meals to help with hunger?

Sorry for the name change. I am the original poster, just signed in under my old name. Ok... An average day looks like: 8am: Premier 10am: snack (granola bar, maybe an egg, or yogurt, fruit) Noon: lunch (salad or a taco) 2pm: Hungry again. Usually the rest of my lunch. 5pm: Small dinner (baked meat, veggie, no carb) 7pm: small snack (meat rollup with cheese and a pickle) No, I don't think I followed my diet. I think I skipped through the stages too fast. I was overly confident. Now that that's done, what can I do to correct it? I workout about 2x a week, taking that up to 3 this week. I am trying to focus in this area. I drink a lot of Water. I think I may not be getting in enough Protein, looking at trying new supplements. All in all... I am hungry. A lot. I don't feel any reduction in appetite.

    Fear of STRETCHING Sleeve!

Wow! You are two full months out and only getting in 350 calories, plus you are working out??! That seems horrible! You really really should be getting more calories than that. Especially if you are exercising. At two months out you should be able to eat solids, right? I was allowed solids at 40 days. What meats have you tried and how have you handled them? I get my protein daily from Protein Bars, Protein shakes, cheese sticks, greek yogurt and meat. I have meat for lunch and dinner every day. How are you with eggs? That's another good source of protein that is usually pretty easy to stomach.

    Super Hangry

Sugar free-Popsicle's are the truth. Mostly humans have a need to chew their food. The crunch and chewing alleviates the hunger fast. I rather have them then the damn Protein or yogurt or even the plain oatmeal my group was told to eat. I mean who eats plain oatmeal- no sugar, no milk, no nothing. The good news is after surgery you won't be hungry.
  17. I'm 6 weeks pot op. Eating 600-800 cal per day. 60+ Protein and 30-40 carbs. Exercise almost daily - 1 hour walk w good pace and weights after. I had a total of 45 pounds to lose and have lost 23 pre and post op. The. It all came to a screeching haul the and I started gaining a few oz every day for the past 2 weeks and now I'm up 2.5 total. Not a lot but with the way I'm eating and exercising I would expect loss. I'm at about -900 net calories per day. Any ideas? I'm not a believer in "starvation mode" because I've read so much that shows its a myth. Any other ideas???? Thanks everyone. ???? Ps. Carbs come from things like: Bariatric Advantage bars, honey in tea, nuts, fruit, Greek yogurt or a splash of apple juice in Water. No starches or processed sugars at all.
  18. At 15 months out and I have a new normal. I can eat anything I want, but what I want has changed. I want natural food that will nourish this earthly container that I live in. My old normal was Twinkies and Dr. Pepper for Breakfast. My new normal is 21 grams of Protein. This morning, for example, I had 1 ounce of steak left over from supper yesterday, 1/2 cup of omelet with veggies, and 1 ounce of shredded cheddar, with a little salsa. I never had decadent steak and eggs for breakfast pre-op. My midmorning snack was blended yogurt and ricotta with blackberries and strawberries. lunch today will be home-made ham and lentil Soup with carrots and celery. My late afternoon snack today will be a deviled egg, a 1ounce mozzerella string cheese, and a gherkin pickle. Supper tonight will be grilled chicken and green Beans. I even made up a batch of my chocolate protein fudge today. I mix up Peanut Butter, cream cheese, melted dark chocolate, some of my Omega 3 sprinkles that I add to as many meals as possible (flax seed - wheat germ-chia), chocolate Protein powder, and some artificial sweetener. A one inch square is all I can eat at any one time. I don't measure this recipe. I just throw in what's on hand. Overall, I eat a satisfying variety of fresh meats and garden veggies. I had to cut back on fruit because it was slowing my roll, but I do have my berries every day and usually one serving of some other fruit. This morning it was 1/2 of a small banana. Eating post-op does not have to be torture. Once your new tummy acclimates to its new condition, you can add a happy and welcome variety. And don't waste time worrying about what other people think. Don't give away your power. I, too, wish I had done this sooner - before two knee replacements and a stroke. I call that negative back-talk "hampsters in my head". Do this for you, and let us know how it goes.
  19. So I was LB'ed last Thurs, 4/16, and today is day 4 post op. I'm on full liquids and have noticed if I drink a protein drink or like today Greek yogurt (yes it's allowed) 4oz I develop very loud belly rumbles about 30 min later, then eventually pass the gas and then it's about time for my next meal! These are not painful but would be embarrassing at work or in public! Will this settle down or should I plan on gas x with each meal?? I ate these same foods before surgery....

    I want salad please!

Depends on your definition of useless filler. Most dark, leafy greens provide Vitamin A, K and Protein as well as providing nice Fiber, which helps you poo. The exception to that is iceburg. However, a salad doesn't have to contain lettuce. It can be any assortment of raw veg you like. As for dressings, I never buy bottled or premade dressings. Too many chemicals in most of them. I make my own. It's pretty much any acid + a fat then add seasonings to taste. Than means I can use a bit of avocado, olive oil, greek yogurt, a cooked egg yolk combined with say a good balsamic vinegar, lemon/lime/orange juice, apple cider vinegar or my favorite, pickle juice and emulsify my own concoction. Mt favorite summer salad is fresh spinach, black Beans, hard boiled egg with a few orange slices and an orange vinaigrette. Sometimes I even crumble a few walnut pieces over it for added crunch.

August post op sleevers: Check in

I would rather snack than eat a meal and I know this sends me in the opposite direction.I decided to add more veggies yo my meals, especially salads. I love salads with a little of this and a little of that. Lately I have been eating trail mix which I know is not the healthiest. I try to stay within the serving size which is 1\4 cup. It is good because I will have it as a topping for my yogurt treat. I am still trying. A work in progress
  22. Fatdiva I too have fears of not loosing enough weight. I walk, jog, spin, and treadmill everyday, sometimes 3 times a day. I always burn more calories than I take in which has never been more than 350 calories. I had my surgery Feb 20, 2015. From day one I have struggled to get my Protein in. I absolutely cannot stand the taste and I've tried many different types and in may different ways, (in food, as a shake, with crystal lite, yada yada yada). I just hate it. I pretty much hate most sweets now. The taste of sugar makes me spit all day, yuk. I see my doctor tomorrow because I'm at a lost as to what to eat or do. I eat so slow that Breakfast always runs into lunch. One, I've never been a breakfast person; so, it is difficult to eat breakfast because I'm never hungry in the morning, for 49 years I've skipped breakfast. I pretty much can't stand another cup of yogurt. Now I'll have 1 Sargento Pepper Jack cheese stick and Water. I've always loved ice cold water, wish I could drink it like I use to, but my stomach says no way, can't drink fast. Any suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreciated. I feel so confused right now and at a lost. Scared to death that I'm not even going to loose anymore weight. Further, how many calories should I be eating per day anyway. I can never get a straight answer out of the nutritionist.

Am now on day 4 /11 of purée and am tolerating fish, chicken salad, hamburger with melted cheese, cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt, and scrambled eggs made with a little water to fluff them up.. Will try chicken soup tomorrow - just avoid the noodles. Can just today get down 4 oz of puréed protein. After 11 days I transition to soft foods for two weeks, then regular diet.
