3 options: which one would you choose?
mtlmiracle posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, Over the course of October I will meet with three different medical professionals to choose a weight-loss option. First I will meet with a coach from The Fasting Method. She specializes in Fasting regimens and Behavioural Therapy. The cost is around $1000 for 4 online coaching sessions and an online support group. Most of the fasting I will do myself and will need a lot of determination to stick to the 36-hour fasting protocol they recommend. Next, I have a consultation with a surgeon at a private clinic. The cost will be 14,000 for a gastric sleeve and the surgery would be completed before the end of the year. They provide all of the medical services for surgery plus 3 months of nutrition counseling and medical follow-up at 1 month, 3.5 months, and 1-year post-op. They also have an online facebook support group. Finally, I have an appointment with a new General Practitioner who could provide me with a referral to a bariatric clinic within a hospital. This process would be covered by the province if I were accepted into the program. However, the process could take several years (1-4 years) before I received the surgery. Yet they would provide the most support both before and after surgery in order to be successful. I am really unsure of which option is best for me and I wonder if other people might have insight into what could work for them knowing what they know now. The first option, fasting, I have tried on my own and was successful for 8-12 months but gained all the weight back and then some. The second is the quickest way to put in place a permanent tool that I will have to use on my own to lose weight. It is also the most expensive. The third option would provide me with a lot of support and I think I probably do need some type of talk therapy. I'm expecting this surgery and the dramatic weight loss to be like an emotional rollercoaster for me. However, I do not have many obesity-related complications just yet (such as diabetes, hypertension, etc.) although my BMI is around 40. How much support did you need? Which option would you choose knowing what you know now? -
Help,3 week plăteau and I am în month 2
SummerTimeGirl replied to gabydoc's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, they (stalls) definitely seem to be common and sometimes for no reason at all. I just came out of a 4 week stall and I believe this time it was due to water retention. Not sure why as I haven't eaten off plan or anything different. I thought it was maybe due to my period but that wouldn't explain it lasting all month long. Make sure you're on plan, eating enough protein, enough calories, and drinking enough water (think lack of water was partially my problem this time around.......before I had a stall and I think it was due to lack of protein so always check yourself). Best of luck! Hang in there! -

if you're following your program closely, then you're just in a stall. They are very common and can happen several times along your journey. Just keep following your program and stay off your scale for a few days if you need to. The stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again. -
Revision in Mexico?
toakes0852 replied to EllieV's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my sleeve done in TJ Mexico and didn’t have an issue. When I raised concerns to my doctor in Canada he told me “Would you rather a surgeon do the surgery who does 3 a week or 2-3 a day?, find a reputable hospital and go”. 6 years later and I just had a revision to bypass but only because of GERD. After the revision surgery the surgeon took a look and said they did a good job with the initial surgery. -
Weight loss slowing down at 5 months
Lynnlovesthebeach replied to Michele 2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like you are doing fine. Even at 5 lbs a month you'll reach your goal before a year is up. I didn't reach my doctor's goal until 9 months and my personal goal until 11 months. I kept losing after that and am way past where I thought I'd be. I'll be three years post op on the 9th. Keep at it, you'll get there! -
GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +
Tinyhounds replied to Frustr8's topic in The Gals' Room
Me! My highest weight was 323lbs, but when I started the Bariatric program with my insurance I was 306. Weight the day of surgery was 285, and today, 2 weeks out, weight was 268. I can’t wait to reach onederland. I’m really hoping I’ll get there before my birthday in March. That would be amazing 🤩 Happy to meet you ladies!! -
I know, it does feel like we're a smaller group! I had originally imagined I'd be getting the sleeve, but because I was already a GORD sufferer, my surgeon pretty much talked me out of the sleeve. Initially I was extremely down and anxious about it, but going with the MGB was 100% the right call. Quality of life with a sleeve and worse GORD would have been horrible. Congrats on your first 2 weeks and amazing loss!

My gastric bypass was on 9/17! I’m officially 2 weeks out and down 17 lbs from my surgical weight. I’m psyched I found this thread- I feel like there are more people that get the sleeve than get the bypass. I’ve suffered from acid reflux since childhood, so when they asked which surgery I was interested in, it seemed to me like a 2 birds, 1 stone thing, you know? How is everyone doing?

What does 4-5 months out look like for you?
Arabesque replied to jenny8791's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Glad you are doing so well & are happy with your progress. Whoo hoo! By 4-5 months I was eating a variety of meats, vegetables & some fruit & lots of dairy. Had a small amount of carbs in the form of rolled oats 3 or 4 times a week. Still small portions - almost 3/4 cup on a good day & depending on what I was eating. I ate three meals a day & usually two snacks (yoghurt & cheese or fruit). No real difficulties eating most foods that I can recall by that time except for things I always had issues with like chilli & spicy foods. Though there are still odd occasions when my tummy says nope this is not for you but I’ve worked out what most of those things are now or why my tummy said no. I hit goal at 6 months so my weight loss was noticeably slowing especially by month 5. I did keep losing for another 11 months or so but it just took me time to be able to physically eat enough to stop losing & to work out how & what that meant & looked like for me. While losing my cholesterol levels increased & my liver function was off. Not because of what I was eating but because of what was being released into my blood stream from my melting fat. Once I reached my goal they settled & my cholesterol dropped back to the level it has been for years (regardless of my weight). Always had a tendency to low blood pressure & the occasional hypoglycaemic episodes & as I got closer to my goal, they increased in frequency (esp the low blood pressure: all day, ever day). So that did, & still does, affect my energy levels & my ability to be very active - start strong but fade fast. Lol! Now I eat almost a recommended serving size again depending on what I’m eating. Eat 3 meals & 3 or 4 snacks a day - about 1200/1300 calories. Cut out a lot of sugar, (real, substitutes & artificial). Only eat whole or multi grains - rolled oats & some crackers (2 serves a day). Can’t eat breads, rice & pasta - sit heavily in my tummy & restrict what else I can eat. My surgery hasn’t limited me socially in any way. That’s my story anyway. -
I'm two-plus weeks out and can drink mouthfuls. I try to take smaller sips, though, because it makes the 'full signal' happen before I get uncomfortable. But I can easily polish off a protein drink in 15-20 minutes. As The Greater Fool said above, it's not like before where I could drain a 500 ml bottle of water (or, uh, beer) at one draught. And I'm okay with that. But yeah, it does mean more water breaks at the gym.

Asking for a bariatric diet in the hospital... LOL
vikingbeast posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I ended up back in the hospital last night... nothing to do with my bariatric surgery. A 🤬spider bit me and caused a huge flare of cellulitis. (I'm home now and now just on oral antibiotics rather than "nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" IV antibiotics.) But while I was there I mentioned I was on a liquid diet due to bariatric surgery. I should have been more specific... a tray showed up with sugary Jell-O, clear broth (which I did drink), and regular ol' apple juice. My dismay must have been obvious because My Super Awesome Nurse frowned a bit and said, "Didn't you say you were on liquids because of BARIATRIC surgery?" loud enough for the nutrition person to hear. "Yes," I said, "I need a bariatric diet." And lo, they brought forth stuff I could eat... cream of rice, more broth, diet juice, protein shake, yoghurt, sugar-free pudding, sugar-free Jell-O. The breakfast tray was more than I could have eaten all day... and then three hours later another tray appeared! When I was discharged, My Super Awesome Nurse said, "That stuff is just going to get thrown out... put it in your bookbag and take it with you!" It makes me wonder what that hospital expects their immediately post-op patients to be able to consume! But hey, I've got food for two days now. Now I just need to get rid of all the fluid they pumped into me. -
Thank you for that information that truly helps. I am scheduled next week for surgery and start my liquid diet just a few day before surgery. I pan to be back to work in a week but I am remote and have a desk job. I will keep you posted on my progress. Again thanks for sharing and great job on the weight loss pre/post surgery.

I had my gastric sleeve surgery on December 29, 2020. I had been consistently losing weight until about 3 months ago. I have been at a 3 month stall and even gained about 3 pounds. I saw my surgeon yesterday and was a bit ashamed because I had gained. It was totally my own fault. I had stopped drinking my protein shakes and my appetite seemed to ha e picked up as well. I had began to eat more foods and I believe that has had a huge impact. From there, I began some unhealthy snacking and craving foods that I used to eat and gave in to the temptation. I had been stressed from life and work. Been having back spasms and unmotivated to workout. Today, I will begin my protein shakes again and get up and move!! I changed my life by getting surgery to lose the weight and I must regain my motivation back! With the new way of life due to the pandemic, it has been hard to get out as much. I am determined to break this horrible cycle I have fell into, I can do this and so can you!!! Sent from my SM-G998U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

Stomach pain / nausea 9 days post op
toodlerue replied to Bariatric_Babe's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Did you Surgon give you anything for nausea? This is weird but try taking a teaspoon of raw oatmeal. Wash it down with water if it gets too dry in your mouth. I’m over 3yrs post op. I buy meclizine by the bottle on Amazon & take it about 4-5 times a week. I always do the oatmeal when I’m at home, but I do the meclizine if I’m out somewhere. I hate feeling nauseous! -
I think it is doable alone, but I would consider investing in a heavy duty cane (you can usually find them at Walgreens/CVS/local medical supply store) If I lived alone, my biggest concern would be falling down. You have no idea how much you use your abdominals for moving until you let a doctor cut into them. I had my surgery on a Monday morning and it was not until Tuesday night that I was able to get out of a chair without a nurse's assistance. Even for the next week or so, I was so very tender/ginger going from sitting to standing. I used the cane to have something sturdy that I could use to push myself up, especially in situations like getting off the toilet. It also helped for the first few times I went out of the house (store/church/etc) to walk with it so I didn't have to worry about losing my balance if someone ran into me.

I had my surgery on August 16. Lost 24 pounds in the first 2 weeks. Lost 6 pounds over the next 18 days. Lost 12 pounds in the last 12 days. Stay the course. The PA at my surgeon's office said that my body was fighting against the reduced caloric input, but that it would eventually give in. He did advise me to cut back a bit on sodium (I was living on Gatorade Zero), because it meant I was carrying more water weight.

well, it’s been one week, I went to my Back doctor, because I had spinal stenosis in the lower back for about three years, Tried having surgery, but I couldn’t because when I went into the operating room, when they flipped me over, I stopped breathing, so the operation was canceled, All I could do was walk about 100 feet then my back would hurt so bad, I would halve to sit down, I also couldn’t stand longer than 10 minutes at a time. Because of the pain, I also had arthritis pain in my knees, hips lower and upper back, I was a mess. Had my surgery, and yes it hurt, and yes, I had to change, I went to my back doctor, and he said I lost 24 pounds. I said wow. The first thing I noticed was my ankles, they weren’t swollen anymore. They looked kind of skinny, My back pain stated to go away, my arthritis pain went away, I showered yesterday and dropped my sock and I just reached down and picked it up, haven’t done that in a while. Rechecked today and yes, I have no problem picking up items off the floor. Went to the store, and walked around the whole time, feet are tired, but my back doesn’t hurt at all. After all this after one week, what’s to come in the future.

I’m 13 days out from surgery but my surgeon started me on soft food at one week out. The first time it happened was with scrambled eggs (I thought). It lasted about 40 minutes and was so painful and awful that I tried to make myself throw up. I couldn’t. It happened again last night. I’m now thinking that it’s not the food (cause last night I was drinking my protein shake). I’m thinking it’s my big gel cap colace. This time it lasted 2 hours and it was AWFUL. Super painful, lots of “foam”, and this time my body was trying to make itself throw up. Guess that’s something I can’t do anymore. Racing heart, flushed skin, dizziness- This morning I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. I’m almost afraid to eat. I would do an awful lot to prevent that all from happening again.

Weight loss slowing down at 5 months
catwoman7 replied to Michele 2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
as you get closer to your goal, it slows down a lot. Just stick to your plan, though. My last few months I lost like two or three lbs a month - but it did keep going... P.S. I've mentioned this on this site before, but i remember going to Weight Watchers meetings before surgery, and (mentally) rolling my eyes at these slightly overweight women who'd moan and groan about how hard it was to lose 10 lbs. Being 200 lbs overweight, I had to laugh at that. But now I totally get it... It's REALLY tough when you don't have much to lose. But just keep at it.. -
