I agree with you about Dr. Au he is awesome. I just had port revision and can't say enough about how good he is.

    Yay! Gastric bypass?

I went through the six month monitored program before I had my RNY in sept. My six months actually went 9 total months due to the calendar of the surgeon, phsycologist and the time needed to get the clinic to file paperwork. I could hardly wait to get through it and move on with my life. RNY has been one of the best things I have ever done in my life, I now eat to live instead of live to eat. I had diabetes type 2, severe acid reflux/Gerd, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and stage 3 kidney disease when I started. All of these issues have been resolved. Many of them in the first 3 months post op. I can eat what I want, I have not had any dumping syndrome. I eat healthy because healthy food is what my body is asking for.you crave what you eat. I used to be a sugaholic. Now, I don't like the taste of things that are too sweet. I had the bypass because of the severe reflux. I was told the band and sleeve could make that problem much worse and then I would be looking at a revision to RNY anyway. I have never regretted having this surgery. Not for one second. I only wish I had it done 15 years ago. Good luck to you!
  3. Is the surgeon that looked at it a band surgeon? Most of the time they don't understand what is going on with the band. I would get a second opinion about the surgery. My incisions all drained. Not unsual. I had to have a port revision surgery but that was because my port tilted. You don't want someone messing with the band or port unless they have experience with it. Just my humble opinion.

    Fear of failure

HI, I had those feelings too. Dr Aceves and Dr Campos assured me that the sleeve would be different than my band. So after almost 4 months it is very different and I am very glad I had Dr Aceves do my revision in 1 surgery. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.
  6. :welcome: Hello and welcome to this forum, I think you will love it. I am sorry for your past problems, with the band. I see where are a lot of folks are revising to the sleeve and are much happier. I wish you all the best of luck, and so glad you found us!!

    Travel question

Hi Fellow VSG'ers! I am set for a band to VSG revision on 1/29/15. I have a vacation planned to an all inclusive resort in the Dominican planned for the beginning of May. This may seem silly...but am I going to be okay to travel by then (barring any complications)? Has anyone traveled a few months after the surgery? How do you manage food? I look forward to hearing from everyone!! Jennifer
  8. Hello im new here and have a few questions. I am currently on my 3rd day of my pre OP diet. My surgery date is October 29th. I was wondering how long the surgery takes? (They will also be fixing my hiatal hernia) how long is the average Hospital stay? What you couldn't live without in the Hospital? And last if all what was the post OP pain like once you got home? Thank you and good luck to everyone. Hw: 320 lowest weight after band: 275 current weight: 279
  9. @Panda333 I’m a sleeve five years out maintaining in the 130’s. I am type one diabetic. My surgeon suggested the sleeve because there are times, I need to eat sugar to raise my blood sugars. WIth the sleeve, my intestines are not altered, I don’t have dumping syndrome with sugar. I am now well controlled and hardly use insulin. I want people that are researching weight loss surgery to know, many of us have had no complications and have maintained years out. Weight gain or need for a revision does not happen to all of us. Do your research, trust your surgeon’s advice do what’s best for you. Any type of bariatric surgery may need a revision due to complications, surgery not performed correctly, eating to the point of stretching your surgery (big debate on this issue) Grazing/eating around your surgery, eating disorders, or simply not following your surgeons plan. Only my opinion: For some, the sleeve is the wrong choice for them. Things I wish people knew about the sleeve. Your sleeve restriction will become less over time. you can hold more food. (it’s not back to full size) Long term success will be diet and behavior change. Just because you have more space does not mean you have to eat over your calories and macros to gain weight. If your surgeon has diagnosed that you stretched your surgery. Get counseling before a revision to make sure you don’t stretch a second surgery. Your intestines are not altered with the sleeve. Most of us can tolerate sugar without dumping. If sugar is an issue for you, investigate surgeries that give you dumping syndrome. You will feel real and head hunger at times (true with any surgery type) Hunger is more manageable after surgery. age 45 day of surgery 2014 - age 50 2019

    Close to goal...NOW WHAT????

I have been a big barrell of complications. The first of which was my port came up from the muscle back in April. I had revision surgery in August, and surprisingly enough it came up AGAIN. I have always had very very tight restriction, but instead of dealing with my doctor and discussing possibilities and solutions with him, I just continue what I am doing. I am not starving. I just eat VERY VERY little portions, but a few times throughout the day. I supplement myself with Ensure and yogurts. (I didn't mention that my doctor is extremely hard to get in touch with. When I finally do speak to him it is usually me yelling at him for the fact that it has taken me so long). Most recently I had pneumonia, which the doctors figured I had for a number of weeks without symptoms. That had a direct effect on my eating. I thought my band had slipped, but CT scan proved otherwise. With regard to what I eat. Well, today I had about 1.5 eggs with yolk for breakfast. For lunch I had a small arugula salad with goat cheese (but was only able to eat very little of it because my eggs sat in my stomach for so long). I had apple juice in between. Tonight I am having some tuna and salmon sashimi. That is a typical day for me. It is just some days, like yesterday, I can tolerate a lot more food. Then today my digestion is very very slow. I have gone days without eating, but that was months ago, when I was struggling with food challenges, coming to learn what my body can and cannot tolerate. I lose no weight when I don't eat. I just want to get through the next few pounds and have a slight unfill. I think that will help.
  11. I have been obsessed with researching everything I can about the band and people's post-op experiences. I think I have over-researched and am now feeling very discouraged about the band. Tremendous Gas Pains, PBing, Ports Flipping, Need for Revision Surgery, Slippage, Erosion, Unable to Eat Certain Normal Foods EVER (grapes, rice, bread, salads, leafy greens, red meat, chicken, etc., etc., etc.), Not Losing Weight (particularly after the first 18 months) - I am freaking out. I want the band to help me not have my life so food-centric. It seems to me that there are so many people out there who have had so many significant problems that they have to think/worry about food every moment of their days. I am seriously beginning to wonder if I should even have the surgery. I am in good physical shape - it isn't so much what I eat as much as the sheer volume. I have read numerous stories from banders stating that since they aren't able to eat ____ they are making what I feel are bad food choices in order to "just eat something." I feel desperate about my weight and have been hoping that the band would finally provide me with the extra control I needed - now I am wondering if it will even bring more stress and problems in my life. :help: Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

    who's had gastric bypass ?

Having my revision to RNY from Lapband was the best thing I ever did for myself!!! Life is much more easier with the RNY. I have not vomited or slimed once since my revision, I made it to goal in 1 year and all my labs are text book perfect. I also love the fact that there is no maintaence, by that I mean no fills or unfills and BTW most insurance does NOT cover fills and unfills so I'm saving alot of $$$$ with the RNY

    who's had gastric bypass ?

1st off ANY surgery has it's inherant risk (I work in the PACU so I see it 1st hand) I had a revision because AFTER 3 1/2 years with the band, I had a slip and the start of erotion. I also developed a severe case of esophagitis and GERD. At first I wanted another band, but; after alot of soul searching and the fact that it could slip again and I needed staples in my stomach to repair the damage done by the band, it was a no brainer to revise to RNY. As far as dumping goes, yes I do and I'm quite happy I do. Remember WLS fixes the stomach and NOT the brain, but; once you experience dumping you tend to stay AWAY from high sugar and high fat foods because dumping is not pleasant at all.

    Am I alone

I'm so sorry for what you're going through, I would be highly upset too!! Did your surgeon ever say whether you had a lot of scar tissue or anything that may have prevented him from doing a typical sleeve? Did he mention what your bougie size is suppose to be? When he did the leak test, if there was one, did you get to see it on the screen? When I had my leak test, I got to see it on a screen myself, and they provided me with an x-ray of my new sleeve. Even if they didn't give you a copy of yours, perhaps you can ask if they have one? If not, you will have to do the contrast study to know for sure. How much dense protein can you eat? I think I saw one girl over on OH (obesity help) that complained about the same thing and found out she really didn't have any reduction in size of her tummy, but I'm sorry I can't remember her name, perhaps you can search over there and find her. I think she is both suing her surgeon and having or had a revision to DS or something. She posted it on the VSG board over there. I would investigate fully and find out what has happened. Good luck!

    Sleeve vs band

Honestly, with the current statistics available on the band, there is really no reason for anyone to be getting a band these days. Obviously those of us with revisions did it for a reason, and there are some people out there who are still happy with their bands. But the latest numbers say that at 2 years about 20% of band patients have had it removed and at 5 years it's about 50%. Weight loss is not nearly as good, and some of the complications are really terrible. I didn't have any of them, but my band broke during my pregnancy and I regained a lot of weight before my revision. It is looking like pretty soon the band will no longer be done at all in the US, because the other surgeries are all superior. Already I am doing better with the sleeve than I did with the band--to me it's a no-brainer. Good luck to you!

    Hi all, Me again!

Hi, I wrote a while back and asked a bunch of questions. I'm back, my son is 100% cancer free, and I'm going to a new Dr. I feel so much better about getting in to see the new Dr, and I am going this Wednesday! The nurse coordinator of the office called to ask me what was going on, and as I explained, she was flabbergasted! She said that I was totally mis-cared for, for the past 2 years. There is no way that a flouro for every fill is 'required'. There is no reason that I should have to wait 2 months between fills, and after having an EGD that said i have an acute prolapse, the Dr should have given me other options beside just unfilling me for 3 months! So, we are going to check my band and see what is going on there because I am pretty much HUNGRY all the time. The only problem is when I eat a good solid meal, Protein and veggies, I puke my guts up. I am really hoping that the band is slipped again, cause then it is a no brainer to revise to the sleeve. This Dr is all for it, the old Dr wanted me to have a bypass. I so do not want a bypass! I think it is my body, my money, my insurance, so you should do what I want. I also called the old Dr's office because of the throwing up, and the nurse said, well you are schedule for a removal on June 14th, so just eat soft foods until then! WTF? the June appt was supposed to be a fix not removal. Then she says, you failed the band, you need a bypass! Now I am totally scared to death to let that Dr operate on me, I will come out with no band and that is not what i want. Ok rant over, thanks. What should I ask this new Dr on Wednesday? Are there specific questions that i need to ask in order to get a sleeve? I finally got my mom on board so I am really hoping to be able to have it done now! thanks, Patti
  17. I was banded in 2006, lost 60lbs initially but now gained it all back after having a baby. Threw up almost every meal for the past 5 years, heartburn/reflux almost every day, etc. I was self pay as well. Found out a couple weeks ago that my band has partially slipped and can slip completely at any given moment which would then cause me to have to go into an emergency surgery if that happens. I am DONE with this band. I am scheduled to have a revision from band to sleeve next week in Mexico with Dr. Aceves. I cannot wait to have this band out and hopefully start feeling better. I truly belive the sluggish/fatigue feeling I constantly have is from this band that has caused me nothing but trouble. I know some people have had great success with it, but a lot of people have had the same problems as you and I. I hope all works out for you. I really cannot answer your questions now, but I will be more than happy to answer them all after next week, once I am sleeved. Good Luck!

    Dr. Jay - Your Experience

Hi Don! I am scheduled to be sleeved by Dr. Jayaseelan Feb 7th. Congrats on your revision, and I'm glad to hear everything is going well. Keep us posted and let us know if you have any pointers!
  19. When u post, under ur picture it says if ur a lapbander, sleever, or bypasser. I originally was a bander but have since revised to a sleeve (4 mths ago). Tried to edit my profile but can't find where I change it Ideas?
  20. Hello! I am considering revising my band to sleeve. I really would like to do the procedure in one step. Does anybody know of any doctors in New Jersey?

    48 fr Bougie?

Thanks Again Tiffykins, you are an awesome resource. It just seems so HUGE...lol. I am hoping to not have to do a lot of 'dieting' after this surgery, and dont want to have to go in for another revision if I can eat too much is all. Sigh.. Thanks for the link, :-) Lisa (Who has a surgery date of may 27th!)
  22. You'll lose more weight with the bypass without need for adjustments, the nurse at my surgeons office is having a revision because her Lapband slipped I think that surgery has to many problems Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  23. Wendydarling19, Did you find someone yet? i forgot to mention Dr. Ewing put my lapband in, in January 2006. im staying with him for the revision. the only problem im having now is waiting for approval. arrgggggg.
  24. Hi there and welcome! Your story is so much like mine. I had lost 70 pounds at one point with the band. Then I developed a leak and I was self pay so I was stuck. I couldn't afford to do anything about it so I just lived with a broken band and gained thirty five pounds back. This past September, I started having extreme pain that turned about after a visit to the ER to be broken band tubing and a slip. I am now revising to the sleeve. I totally understand your pain and frustration. It is so hard to pay for the band and then have it fail you. Just know it is NOT your fault. They gave us this picture perfect representation of the band and when it doesn't work or breaks, no one seems to be accountable. Hang in there and I will be happy to let you know more about the sleeve after my surgery. Don't give up!!! .

    Question About Revision

Will they still do a revision on you? Depends on who you mean by "they". A surgeon will do a revision if the patient is having complications or issues with their band. They may even do it if the patient isn't having complications but wants a revision. Whether the patient's insurance company approves the revision depends on the individual policy. Some policies allow for only one WLS in a patient's lifetime. My insurance company approved my band removal and revision to sleeve despite my normal BMI because my surgeon provided evidence that the revision was medically necessary.
