This is a question I am noticing consistently coming up. It takes a while before one can get the type of restriction that will limit you from eating or drinking more than we were instructed to. Usually 3 to 5 fills. Everybody's body is different. Just because you can gulp or eat more doesn't mean that you should. Your stoma shouldn't be stretched. Your body is still adjusting to what you have endured only two months ago. It takes time. Please be patient and continue to follow your doctor's orders. As long as you are losing weight is the main thing because that is the point. Losing weight. Continued success.

I'm sorry to read that you are experiencing band issues and are now facing removal, but wow! What a ton of self-knowledge you've noted here. Your words ring very true for me...many of your points are also mine (especially the knowledge of what your maintenance calories are.) You are well-armed at keeping your weight off and I am confident you will. May your removal surgery go smoothly and enjoy your first meal of salmon. Please let us know how you are doing with your post-band life.

I have been advised due to bleeding that need to have the mirena (intrauterine levonorgestrel device inserted), or otherwise have a hysterectomy. I put on weight when i take the pill, get bad cellulite on my thighs. Has anyone got any feed back re weight gain - re mirena, also if you had a hysterectomy, many thanks.

OK, so I was banded a year ago and have lost 103 pounds. I'm extremely happy with the results of the surgery so far (I still have 31 pounds to lose to reach my goal weight). I have never been this thin in my entire life and I now look forward to exercising or stepping on the scale or going shopping for clothes. There's just one problem: Since the surgery my hair has changed DRASTICALLY! Does anyone else have this problem? It was the same at first, then I noticed it was falling out faster and faster until it was coming out by the handfuls. I panicked when I could easily see my scalp through my once-thick hair and found this forum where I read about others who had problems with losing their hair. Now I drink a Protein supplement everyday (I know some people don't think this is necessary for the health of your hair, but it can't hurt much) and I take Biotin daily. Now my hair is no longer falling out and is actually growing back. If I pull my hair back I can see new, tiny hairs growing in. But the texture of my hair is totally different. It is no longer soft and flowing. It's stiff and scratchy. I used to be able to feather my hair with little effort, now it is so curly I can't do anything with it. If I brush the curls out I look like my head is a giant cotton ball. And if I let it dry naturally, it gets all puffy and frizzy. I have to spray hairspray on it or use mousse before it dries completely or I look ridiculous. I have talked to several people who have recommended one shampoo or another and I have tried them all, but nothing is taking my hair back to the way it was before - normal hair with a slight wave. I've even tried straightening it with a straighener but it doesn't work. I never thought I was vain about anything I had, but now that my body is looking better and I feel better, I just feel like putting a paper bag over my head so no one sees my hair. Anyone else have these problems? Anyone know what to do about it? I'd love to hear any ideas... Sue

Usually erosion doesn't have many symptoms, most don't realize they have it. The biggest one is they tend to gain weight. Esophageal spasms feel like a heart attack many times. You can be walking across the room and suddenly find yourself doubled over in pain. It's like a charlie horse in your esophagus. Slips... often times you can't even keep Water down, you barf everything. Think of an hourglass, the top half being very small and the bottom very large. With a slip usually the back half of the stomach slides up through the band and the top half gets bigger and flops over to one side cutting off the pass through for food and liquids. You might feel a loss of restriction, very big and noticeable or an inability to keep anything down. I'd go to your doc and see what is going on with you.

I was eating anything I wanted. And I mean anything. I can eat anything as long as I chew well. By too tight I mean since my last fill I've gained a good amount back. Could I have gained too much, making my band tighter then it should be?

I am three weeks post-op and I have been journaling what I eat (mostly to get in the habit of accountability). I talked to my doctor yesterday and he told me that I should be eating around 1200-1400 calories per day. I told him that I was eating 740. 880, and 900's range. He told me that was fine. I'm kind of concerned that I'm not going to lose and my body will go into starvation mode if I don't increase to at least 1200 calories, but at the same time I'm afraid to increase for fear of not losing weight either. Anyone have any ideas on this? I have lost 13 lbs. in three weeks.
-
I did the low calories for three weeks and never went in to Starvation mode but becareful because ( rapid weight loss can and will cause Gall stones ) I am having surgery in a few days or so.I aslo ate tons of fruit. when I was doing the low calories the weight fell off. I had to do some thing because I was 310 pounds Iam now 231.4 and will be lighter in the morning. My Docter told me yesterday it was worth it. Im much healther now. Look like a new person & feel like Im alive I can do anything now. Good luck with your weight loss program & being banded that was a great step to better living. and your health. ps make sure you drink enough water/ liquids/protein and walking is great for weight Loss. take care God bless.

Thanks vinesqueen and jqpublic for responding. I am not losing as fast as most of you did in the beginning, but it's still coming off. I'm down 13 lbs. in 3 weeks. I reinjured myself when I bent over and stretched at the same time to pick up a toy off the floor. My doc said it's probably a pulled muscle, but something tells me it's not. It's been 6 days and I still hurt with certain movements. I'll have to put off walking until my pain is gone! Thanks again for your responses and good luck to both of you!!! jqpublic, good luck on your surgery. Keep up the good work!!! You've had such an amazing weight loss. Good for you and congratulations!

I found this link again for another thread, maybe this will help you all, it did me! http://www.room42.com/nutrition/basal.shtml You put in your height, weight, age, and activity level and it gives your calorie, fat, carb, and protien levels for either losing, maintaining, or gaining weight. I want to lose, of course, so it said if I eat 1200 (min) calories a day with 40g fat, 45g protien, and 165g carbs I shold lose 1+pounds per week. I wonder if I reduced the fat and increased the protien by just a bit, maybe I'd lose a bit faster? Also, www.FitDay.com is great for tracking calories, etc. Denise, I think adding banana or Peanut Butter to your protien drink is a great idea. Maybe you could add in one more protien drink a day, and that would get you up over 1000 pretty easy. LittleBigFarms, as you add in regular foods, it gets a bit harder to lose as quickly as during the liquid phase. This is normal, don't worry. Once you get your fill and get your restriction back, you should find it easier to eat less and feel Oh! so full. I am banking on my own advice as I wait not-so-patiently for my first fill. You are doing great!!!

:welcome: :welcomeB: :welcome: :welcomeB: Welcome to LBT!! I didn't lose weight either at first. Not until my first fill and then it took a good 6 fills for the doc to hit my sweet spot. Just relax and it will happen. Give your body time to heal. :gluck:

My DH loves me period. We are very honest with each other regarding everything. That includes my weight loss, and yes, skin. I am planning to have PS when I reach 150.(only 29 pounds away). DH is very supportive of that decision. He wants me to look the best I can look. This is primarily for me and how I feel about myself, but I would be lying if I said that it wasn't for him too. He is very physical and appearance is important to him. He is very nice to look at I might add. We began dating in high school, so he knew me at a size 6. He is not discusted by my loose skin. In fact, when I fuss about it, he says, "would you rather it be filled with fat?" Nice point. We can't wait for me to have PS and get rid of my skin. I can't wait to model sexy lingerie for him minus the loose belly skin and with new perky boobs. He is great and would support whatever decision I made. I am a stay at home mom and I am very appreciative that he is willing to pay lots of money for me to look and feel the way I didn't even think was possible a year ago, and now it's happening!!

I still struggle with how often to weigh. I should probably only weigh once a week, because there's so much fluctuation from day to day. And during the weight loss phase, weighing more often can be depressing. On the other hand, if we see a weight loss from one day to the next, it might give us liberty to have "just one more bite" that we don't really need. I think once I get to my goal, I'll probably weigh more often to head off any slight gains. Jan

Hey there guys. I'm a little bit discouraged at the moment and could really use some advice. I am 2 weeks post op, just over actually, and I GAINED 2 pounds. I do not have a fill yet. I had my surgery on September 25th, and lost 10 lb in the first week. I then lost 3 lb the second week ( weigh on thursdays ). This morning when I weighed myself, I had Gained 2 pounds. How the heck does that happen??? I am not cleared for exercise until Monday, so i'm sure that will help.. I am still on mushies but can eat some scrambled eggs, soft Proteins and crackers. I am hardly taking anything in as I can't eat more than 1/4 cup at a time. How on EARTH do you gain 2 pounds on mushies?!? I'm SO frustrated. Anyone with similar experiences?? Could really use some support today. Thanks guys! Nicole

brochaz replied to cameron1209's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my original band done in Sept. 2001. The old band was over filled (my opinion) and had the AP band done Apr. 2009. I had the "Large" size band installed and I'm questioning the size since I am at full (12cc) and am not loosing any more weight. -
Happy 2 Year Bandiversary Merry Losers!
sghatl replied to christasha's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, everybody. I haven't been checking in here enough lately I see. I am glad to see those of us still here. I have had an interesting second year. On the positive side, I had a hernia repair and a tummy tuck in June of last year and an arm lift and a breast lift in October. I am very pleased with the outcome. On a not so postive side, I continually have problems with reflux at night so that I can no longer eat after 4 or drink after 6 at night or I will be up all night. Ingesting reflux has given me pneumonia once already. It continues to get worse and I have been totally unfilled since last September. Luckily, I have continued to lose minute amounts of weight per month - at least not gain. But my diet is mostly liquid or soft foods. My ticker below reflects my current position. I have had an upper GI and and endoscopy in the last month and when I saw my bariatric doctor this week, we looked at the films together. I have pouch dilation without band slippage and scar tissue between the band and stomach which is why I have restriction despite the band being empty. Bottom line - band has to come out. I can either have a band placed back in with no guarantee it won't happen again or convert to gastric bypass. I think I have decided to get the GB. That said, do I regret getting the band? Hell no. It has been hard work for two years and no easy road. I have had reflux almost the entire journey. I never could really eat the types of food others could. Dense Proteins were a problem for me. I had constant follow up care at the doctor's. I followed band rules. I will get a surgery date when I get back from a trip to Pennsylvania next week. It's not my ideal choice but a better one none the less for me. I don't want to lose but 10-15 more pounds and would be happy to stay where I am for the rest of my life. BUT, I have a history of not being able to keep it off so I will have the surgery. -
Hi Tammy. I am so sorry that you are feeling this way. I have also lost 100 pounds. But my feelings are different. I feel like I have now found the person that was hiding under all that weight. Some times I feel a little strange and dont know how to cope with little things. Like all the energy I have now. It really gets to me because I feel like I cant sit down and my brain cant keep up with my body. But i am working on that.I am also not used to people talking to me so much when I go places. I guess I never noticed people kind of avoided me until now. But I can really see how some people can feel lost. I would think if you just give yourself time to get used to the new you things will get better. Try and enjoy yourself and have fun. Anytime you need to talk you know where we are at.

No longer a lurker
ThinnerKimmer replied to ThinnerKimmer's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
yeah... a friend at work asked me if i'd tried any spices for my Soup. I like hot sauce on EVERYTHING, so it worked out really well  I can't believe how fast the pounds are dropping off. Today I was only down 1.5, so i'm sure the dream is about to end, but i've started to work out again. I don't have problems with my knees, but my right hip gets very stiff sometimes. It hurts a lot. I can't wait to lose this damn weight and stop slouching. It'll be nice when this big tummy blob goes away and i don't look so round when i sit. There's so much I'm looking forward to. You're lucky you live in the US, where you can get all sorts of that carnation Breakfast anytime in the sugar free version. All we have in canada (that i can find) is diabetic boost. It's sooo expensive if i need to be drinking it 3 times a day after surgery. My best friend was in Indiana last week and picked me up six cases of the Carnation stuff. I sure hope it tastes ok! How long do you have to wait to have solid foods? My dr is telling me 7 weeks, but they do the first fill at 6 weeks and then it's back to liquids for a few days, so i assume that it'll be closer to 8 weeks. sigh... i have to go make cupcakes for my friend's birthday. This is going to be torture... -
Heidsz, The answer is absolutely! I was banded last July 9th. Since then I have lost 72lb and only 38lbs to goal. For me is has been as simple as follow the rules, do what the docs ask of you, and it works. It is not a magical cure. You can eat "around" the band, ie ice cream, chips, candy bars, are all still easy to eat. If you will eat normal foods and and not graze you WILL lose weight. You will need to eventually increase your physical activity. If will do this you will be sucessful. Take control of your own future weight loss and good luck!

The short of my first fill was, audrey couldnt find my port. She poked me with a needle 9 times, pressing on it, and found out I also have a lot of scar tissue. So into the xray I go to get the fill. She couldnt get it in with the xray either, so she called the head nurse Jessie in, (whos amazing!) and she poked me 10 times and dug around and felt like she was jumping up and down on the same spot 23445 times. At this point I started to freak out a ltitle, and DR montgomery had to come in and get the big ass needle, he numbed me up witht he lidocaine (bless him!!!!!) and in 10 seconds he was done. Apparently my port is deep, (I carry a lot of weight in my front apparantly) and Ihave a lot of scar tissue. And you have to get the needle directly into the center of the port at an angle and the nurses like couldnt get it. So Dr M is doing my fills now. He did my second one weds the 14th and it went smooth sailing. Handsome surgeon. Heh. /swoon Ive def got restriction now Im at 6cc in my 10cc band.

Need help finding a Dr. in Nashville
tntraumanurse replied to amykns's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My surgeon was Dr. Willie Melvin with the Vanderbilt Weight Loss Clinic. He is absolutely wonderful! I don't know if he'll fill you if he didn't place your band, but it's worth a shot. He is very reasonable and really listens to your problems. When insurance denied me twice, he took me on as a special project, and got me approved. I cannot say enough good things about him. Call him--if he won't do it, I'd be willing to bet that he can point you in the right direction. -
Hi "Losing for me" Thank you so much for your reply. I would love to get together and chat or a coffee. I am open to both. I live in rural Onoway area. Let me know when you are available to chat. Congradulations on your incrediable weight loss. I am so looking forward to a "new healthy me"

Hi Everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else has developed an over active thyroid after surgery? I am 13 months post op and have lost 130 pounds. Over the last 3 1/2 weeks I have been having hives really bad all over. The dermatologist did bloodwork and showed my thyroid is over active. I went to the endocarnologist (spelling?) and he said it is extremely over active and that I would have to start taking medicine to regulate. (only temporary) I had to have more bloodwork and on Nov. 2 i am going for a iodine uptake test. I ve heard the medicine makes it slow down and people usually gain weight. I am scared to death, I don't want to gain any weight back. I've come too far. Anyone have any advice? August All Star 2008
