    Exercise post-op

I am almost 8 weeks post surgery. Like you, I incorporate strength training and cardio every week. At the moment, I do cardio five days per week and I do strength training three days per week. One day per week, Tuesdays, I have a complete day of rest. Did I mention I love Tuesdays? It is my opinion that it is very difficult to build muscle while losing weight. To build muscle, your body needs the raw materials (food) for which to build muscle. While losing weight, your body has a calorie deficit...or in other words, a lack of food. Therefore, it is very difficult to build muscle while losing weight. Perhaps a good goal might be to maintain as much of the muscle you currently possess through strength training. As you lose weight, you will be losing fat and keeping lean muscle. And muscle burns way more calories than fat. Odd fact of the day: According to Harvard Health, adults lose 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after the age of 30. (This is the reason we get fatter as we get older even though we eat the same amount.) 🤔
  2. We are having a cold snap too!! Woke up to 29 this morning. Eeeekkkk (I’m in Texas) This week is suppose to be warm though. You’re in one of the Carolinas right?

    Exercise post-op

You're barely 3 months post-op and while you may be recognize it, your body is still healing. Don't overdo it. It'll come with time. Do what you can.
  4. Hi Everyone! Im 11 weeks post-op tomorrow and have recently started regular workouts at home. Ive done personal training and dance in the past and am now mixing in strength, cardio and stretching into my routine. Hoping to get back to the flexibility i had a couple years ago! Id make sure to warm up first and stretch both before and after my workouts. But since the surgery i find im more sore for longer when i do my strength workouts! I also have found that i cant do as many reps! Is that normal? I did my last strength training on Thursday and its now Sunday and still sore! I used to be able to do 15 reps/ 3-4 sets but now can barely manage 5 reps!! I guess thats something ill have to work up to! Also, what does your routine look like now? Mine is pretty much based on what i used to do. Every second day I would focus on weights and focus on cardio the other days. But with how sore i still am after my last strength session im thinking of changing that up a bit? Any tips? Advice?
  5. Yes! I was thrilled to be out of the hospital, it was a horrible stay with poor nursing care due to the pandemic. However, when I came home, vomiting continued for weeks. Because I was not cooking, my family would get all types of carry-out that normally I would enjoy with them. So depressing. I missed the food and being with them to eat. When the vomiting stopped, and I was able to at least have a french fry, I felt that I was not being deprived, and my mood lightened. The eating plan became more natural, and not so regimented. To the original poster, a couple months have passed since your post, I hope you are feeling better both physically and mentally. 😀

    Determining Goal Weight

I have not heard that so thats great information. Do you know the percentage or where i can find it for 3 months, 6 months 12 months out? Thanks
  7. I had a hard time until i was out of the liquid stage. It was so hard for me because i was in liquid a month before surgery so i missed thanksgiving and had my surgery 12/22/21 I had to stay too because i was also throwing up. I got out Christmas Eve but they didnt want to release me even then until i told the Dr my 2 teenagers where home alone and I didnt want to have them alone on Christmas. But now, 6 + weeks out I am actually really in great spirits and have been since about day 10. I think everyone here are correct that its normal.
  8. Thank you everyone again for all the amazing feedback!! I have gone back to tracking all my food and found that that does help deter me from making bad decisions(not all the time but there is a definite downturn in bad decisions) when I have to input the calories/carbs that make me cringe on 1 piece of food/snack etc. I also realized the ridiculous amount of financial and emotional stress my dog is putting me through these last couple of months and for the next 3 or 4 has also affected me more than I realized(I stress eat and not good things). I have my annual with my PCP next week and am looking forward to a candid conversation about anxiety and ADD symptom management with hopes that getting my mental health back on track it will also help my mindset with the weight loss. I found an excess weight calcluator and I actually have lost 70% of my excess weight from my highest of 347lbs! So I am doing better than I thought. I am shooting for my surgeon's goal of 193 in June for my 18 month post op visit....one day and choice at a time!

    Post op calories

First congrats on your surgery. You seem to be doing well so far. I was never given a calorie goal just fluid & protein but I checked out of my own curiosity. Those first couple of weeks I was eating a bare 200 calories which increased to about 300 on soft foods. But that was me. Many eat more. You’ll find there are a lot of different requirements around calories & we have different experiences about them too. If you feel you need more accountability or guidance ask your dietician &/or surgeon. You may not be able to meet any of their goals in those first weeks but as long as you’re making an effort & are close, especially to the protein & fluid goals, you’ll be ok. But as you’re only ‘eating’ 3 meals a day you should be close to your protein goal & doing fine. Just one thing to watch though, during the surgery a lot of nerves are cut which means messages aren’t getting through to your brain: hunger, full, etc. And fluids go through you quite quickly. It’s important to tread carefully & sip slowly. All because it seems like you can doesn’t mean you really can or should. All the best.

    Post op calories

you're not going to be eating enough in the early weeks to worry about calories. Your focus should just be on protein and fluids (esp fluids).
  11. He brought home Five Guys for dinner. I don’t normally eat burgers with buns This was probably my 2nd (maybe 3rd?) time eating a burger (well PART of a burger at least, lol) since surgery 3+ years ago. I had a Little Bacon Cheeseburger w/ ketchup, mustard, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalepeños with a handful of fries. Ate all the fries and 1/4 of the burger. Estimated 304 calories + another 75 cals for the toppings i forgot to add to MFP before i took the pic below. Was good, but probably would’ve enjoyed a salad more. Or a cookie. 😂

After surgery the main focus is: Water, to not get dehydrated Protein, to avoid loss of muscle mass Limited Volume while the sleeve heals, to avoid stretching your stitch line, damaging it, and causing a leak. In my case, I was on 3 days of just water (no protein).. then 4 days of clear protein (no milky shakes).. and then milky protein shakes. Dr. said not to worry about calories, just water and protein goals. I was given a calory budget after 2 or 3 months..

My sister had the bypass 25 years ago she used to get a blood transfusion due to being anemic about once or twice a year at about year 5 now she gets a blood transfusion every 2-3 months. Again she is 25 years out takes her Vitamins eats right 5’4, 125 pounds and is 62. I choose the sleeve due to things she has had issues with regarding the bypass I had gastritis and severe acid prior to surgery. They removed the bad part of my stimach with the sleeve and heading to 7 weeks out zero acid - knock on wood

    Post op calories

Hi guys, how many calories were you consuming 3 days post op? I feel like I’m ingesting too much I had an Actimel 0% (27 cal) in the morning, 330ml protein shake (155 cal) for lunch which went down quick and a cup of soup (90 cal) in the afternoon which didn’t take me long to finish either. my surgeon never gave me a calorie amount. I’m currently planning on having another cup of soup (90 cal) is this too much for 3 days post op? Surgery was 02/02/2022

    I need accountability

Okay, post each week to let us know how you've done in terms of macros, water intake, protein, and exercise. We'll be looking for these journal entries from you to check on your progress. You can do it!

    Pre-Op Tests

My husband is a sufferer on his 3rd replacement machine. In the UK they get a new one every 2 or 3 years and the old ones get revamped. I know there are many types of masks to try from full face to tiny ones. He also has a water reservoir on his so it humidifies the oxygen so he doesnt burn his nasal passages. He says he sleeps so much better now and doesnt fall asleep all the time. Good luck with it
  17. I had my surgery 2/3 and was released from hospital 2/4. My incisions don't really hurt, just sore. When I had my lap band removed in 10/2021, they must have really yanked on the liver to retract it during surgery because that hurt REALLY BADLY for 3 weeks. Compared to that, this is a non-carb cake walk. I am electing to stay on clear liquids until tomorrow or Monday as I'm not hungry and I don't want to screw the pouch up with too much too soon. I feel really good and Praise Jesus, no complications from the surgery. Now it's time to begin my new relationship with food. No longer will it be my confidant and comforter, but simply my nutrition to keep my body healthy and free of junk. Drinking Smooth Moves hot tea to get my bowels moving after surgery. I've always struggled with constipation and I'm hopeful this will keep me regular.
  18. Hi everyone! I had VSG done 9/13. I went in to surgery at 241 and today I weigh 187. I wanted to post because of a couple reasons. I have hit a big stall, I have been fluctuation up and down 2-3# for almost the a month now. Stalls before never got to me too bad, I would stay off the scale and trust the process. I weigh myself maybe once or twice a week. I’m starting to mentally panic because in addition to this stall, I have found myself slipping into some bad habits. I’m in a season of high stress (I’m in nursing school, working, and being wife/mom)- which is no excuse. Up until this point I was not perfect, but mindful of my food choices and walked about 8-15 miles a week. Now, I go a week or two without exercising, and I’m eating junk. I’m really discouraged about it. I plan to call my nutritionist to address it and get ahold of it before it gets away from me. I’m also going to make an appointment with my counselor, even though I know the things I need to do, and it’s not unreasonable that I’m feeling overwhelmed in this season of my life. This post is in no way a pity party or seeking for sympathy/attention. I need accountability from a group of people who can relate and give some tough love. You all are inspirations. Thank you for reading my vent :) and sorry if the format is funky, I use the app and sometimes it comes out wonky..

3/7 Gastric Bypass. I’m scared of the pain, especially the gas pain everyone says is terrible

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi, my Gastric Bypass date is 3/7. Had to be changed from sleeve due to results of EGD with Bravo showing extreme GERD. I’m excited and scared, thinking about the gas pain everyone describes as horrible.

Lapband to VSG now to RNY

I'm lap band (2006) to RNY (10 days ago). Lap Band simply never worked for me. Never lost any weight at all with it, although I lost via Keto a few years after. When it was removed last week they said it had slipped right up above my stomach. Silly things in my opinion.

    Final Choice

I'm very happy with my sleeve. It still works 3 years later and limits my intake. I thought I wanted Gastric Bypass but my two mental health therapists both suggested that Sleeve was "less radical" and all I needed at my BMI, so I did that instead. No real rhyme or reason.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

February 2nd was my day. So far, minimal pain. Nothing needed more than Tylenol. I’m surprised. I had the revision from the sleeve to the roux-en-y. Best decision I’ve made ever for myself. This is definitely different in feelings for food-not hungry even the slightest and still cooked breakfast for my Mr with no nausea or desire for a bite. I’ll be full liquid diet for 2 weeks. After the sleeve I kept saying I was hungry and they called it head hunger, I tried to convince myself that’s what it was, lol, but no-i was genuinely hungry. Now working on 64 ounces of water a day and taking my needed meds throughout the day so I can get them all in. Need 60-80 grams protein but not there yet. 10 grams is all I’ve gotten in since surgery. Have been reads it this is only temporary and I’ll be able to drink more of the protein drink eventually. I’ll be honest, the stings from the shots to prevent blood clots is worse than my belly pain. I’ll do those for two weeks twice a day. Done in Iowa and so excited. Oh and I’m in a wheelchair because of fractures in my pelvis. Got an upright walker and am able to start taking steps!! It’s all so new, I’m loving the excitement this has brought with it. Good luck everyone!!!

    Food Before and After Photos

Thank you everyone. I’ve known the possibility of regain was there. It was one of the reasons I was ok with exceeding my weight loss goal - room to move. The challenging aspects for me is in understanding why. I can accept the return of hunger but the fact I haven’t changed my diet or calorie intake (except for those two Christmas weeks) & if anything I’m a little more active (not building muscle so I can’t blame that 😉) messes with my head. And I know it’s only a very small amount so far but … more reflection & introspection needed I think. Anyway, I love a lamb cutlet as you know so last night I baked some with a pistachio dukkha crust. Those brown crunchy bits were super yummy. Ate two last night, two tonight & will freeze the last two. I love this baking tray. It was originally my mum’s biscuit tray. She gave it to me 35 odd years ago. I use it for everything including roasts, baked vegetables, as a drip tray, etc. If it goes into the oven I use the tray - hence the darker, burnt baked in flavour you can see in the corners 😁. Do you have a favourite cooking pot or pan? PS - looking gorgeous as usual @Sophie7713.

    Crying over granola

It’s the beginning of examining what we eat & looking for healthier, more nutrient dense food. But yes, it can be an emotional roller coaster as you realise certain foods you enjoyed (offered comfort?) may be off the menu for a while, and your stress levels are already up as you near your surgery date. But there are a lot of things you can eat at 1300 calories. It’s about what I eat to maintain (3 meals & 3 snacks). Look for foods with similar flavours, textures & ingredients. Love your granola, try rolled oats (not instant) with some seeds, nuts & blueberries. (Granola is often high in sugar & fat too so another reason it would be off your plan.) I’ve snacked on things like cheese, high protein yoghurt (look for low added sugar or naturally sweetened with fruit), multi grain crackers, hummus, vegetable crudités, fruit, etc. It’s often easier if you make your own favourite treats as you choose the ingredients & how it’s prepped/cooked. Like you can make a low fat healthier guacamole with avocado, herbs & spices to taste, diced tomato, celery, a little grated red onion & lemon/lime juice. Lots of recipes about for healthier options. Look for alternatives like cauliflower rice & zucchini noodles instead of highly processed rice & pasta. One of the challenging things is reducing your sugar, salt & caffeine intake. Their addictive nature makes withdrawal hard. It will be all worth it. All the best.
