Pre-Op Freak Out?
Truckerchic replied to HotMessPrincess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thats very normal, I think pretty much all of us think that, feel that and do that lol the week before my pre op I gained 4lbs from the O man not having this again for awhile if ever syndrome lol but on my 2 week liquids I lost 12 and I am now 17 days out from surgery and have lost 17lbs! So enjoy your few treats, get your mind all ready for your pre op, you will do great and you will lose! Good luck to you! -
At my third or fourth week post-op, I walked past a banana. And had a craving thrown on me! I had to have that banana. I had no idea I wanted one so bad till I walked past it!

I am seven weeks Monday and have been craving pizza for weeks. Not enough to try it though lol! Just looking at all that grease when my kids eat it makes me nauseous.

Hi Elizabeth - Sorry no one has addressed any of your questions. It sounds to me like you are tight enough based on your description of how you feel. Have you really looked at what you are eating? How many calories are you getting in per day? If it's lower than 1200, you probably need to eat more. How's your activity level? I guess we'd have to know some more details to help you troubleshoot your plateau. I'd be hesitant to say you need another fill based on your current physical feelings, regardless of what you are eating. If you are getting in around 1200 calories a day, exercising 30 minutes a day about 5 times a week, that should put you on the road to weight loss. Many people use www.fitday.com to track their calories and exercise. Perhaps that will help you analyze that side of it. I don't know how many people experience the discomfort you describe, but I tend to have a little pain my first two bites and then I'm usually okay. I think my first two bites are a) not chewed as well as the rest and  are eaten too quickly. Let us know the answers to the calorie/exercise question, and be sure to take it easy! But it does not sound like you need another fill.

Hello everyone, this is my first time on here and I was just looking for some imput from people who understand my situation. I had my gastric bypass surgery on September 7th 2016, so I am 5 weeks post op. I am so thirsty can't seem to get enough to drink I just want to chug Water even though I can't. I drink about 3 16 Oz bottles of water a day and still thirsty. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, as I said I'm 5 weeks out and have only lost 35LBS, I feel I should be losing more and even last week I gained half a pound. I eat about 300 calories a day. what am I doing wrong... Thank You Suzie, SommerBrez, and LilMissDiva. I really appreciate ya'll taking time to write me back. Suzie: I know this won't be a quick fix, however, I don't want to go backwards either. I know I need to be more patient with myself its just hard to when I see so many people already getting to their goal. I guess I don't factor in how much time they invested to get there. SommerBrez: I'm so glad I'm not the only one feeling this way. I get my fill in a week and a half. I hope to see some change after that especially since I will be able to work out then. LilMissDiva: what about the sodium? I do try to keep a low sodium diet but thats because high blood pressure runs in my family. How is that contributing to my weight gain?

Got my surgery date!
countrygrl1978 replied to countrygrl1978's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually had to switch dr's. My original one was pretty much scamming my insurance and kept having me come in and billing for bs stuff. I am PPO, so when I got the bills, I knew either I wasn't there or nothing was done like stated. I started 10/31 with my 6 mo. nutritional. New dr I saw 4/28 & 5/15 so he had 2 extra visits on there), it was submitted 5/28 & approved 6/3. I called Blue Shield Thursday to talk about the last dr, and they told me. And today when I faxed over my pcp approval for the surgery, she set everything up. And said I just need 1 week of protein diet. -
You are where I was in late 2009. I researched the lap-band option for about 8 months last year. Went to 2 different lap-band presentations by 2 different doctors in 2 different cities. I did a lot of researching on the internet and found that "lapbandtalk.com" was the best source of education. On January 5th I had my day long briefing at my doctor's office and started my liquid diet for 2 weeks. I lost about 7lbs. On Janurary 18th I had my surgery and the worst thing for me was coming out of the anesthesia but this wore off pretty fast. I received lots of first class medical attention and can't say enough about the doctor, technicians, nurses, etc. I live about 100 miles from the hospital so I stayed there overnight and left early the next morning. Lot's of support from my wife (& best friend). I did "exactly" what they told me to do,i.e. what to eat, drink, etc. and stayed home from work for the entire week. When I started I weighed 250 lbs. (naked) and this moring I weighed in at 207 lbs. Thats 43 lbs. in just over 9 weeks! I take my Vitamins including B Complex, Optisource and Viactiv Calcium and I feel great! It's really all about how bad you really want to loose weight! In my case I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea and was tired all the time. Now it's all gone. No more pills and I feel great. 75% of my decision was for health reasons and 25% was for how I looked but that was me. You have to restate why "you" want to go for a lap-band and only you can make that decision. :Banane20:

Perhaps it's time to start adding additional food. Seriously... The best stall-buster is a sudden increase in calories, protein, and water. You will likely continue to experience stalls if you attempt to maintain a low caloric intake. Our bodies are astute and will adapt to the morsels we feed them if the intake is too low for too long. I started increasing my caloric intake in a stepwise pattern at 4 months out. Back then, I bumped it up from 800 calories daily to the 1000-1200 range each day. At 6 months out I was regularly eating 1200 to 1400 calories a day. At 9 months out I had gotten up to about 1500 calories a day. By 1 year out I routinely ate 1500 to 1700 calories a day. I am now 2+ years out and maintain in the 2000+ calorie-per-day range, while those who kept their intake too low for too long seem to rapidly regain if they eat more than 1200 calories daily.

Are you sure that you're not just overeating to the point that you pb? If you are sure that's not the reason, then I agree with Harley Nana.... Go and get your band checked out... You might just have tightened up over time If all is well consider taking the following actions 1. have a few days on fluids, throwing up a lot can irritate you stoma and lead to further throwing up... it's a viscous circle. 2. keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, noting when you are throwing up and exactly what you are eating... It's not revolutionary, I know, but it may show you what you are/aren't doing that's hindering further fat reduction. Follow the bandster rules: SaggiJ, You do know what the bandster rules are regarding meals, don't you??? they are as follows... 1. No drink 30minutes before and 45 minutes after food 2. Eat good quality, solid food that will stay in your pouch and give you satisfaction. 3. Eat you Protein FIRST, then your vegetables.... then if you have room you can eat the carbohydrates!!!! If you eat the mash first, then you are asking for trouble in the weight loss stakes..... You also know that it's small bites.... no bigger than 10p piece then chew chew, chew!!! taking larger bites and swallowing them before they're well and truly mushed in your mouth, is asking for trouble, especially when you're tight! Success depends on following these rules and working with your band, not against it! Come on girl, you know what you should be doing!!! Taken from a previous post! Hope that this helps a bit! Hx

Hi all, I'm from the beaches of Virginia but left my bikini body behind some 30 years ago! My appointment with the surgeon is this Wednesday, so I guess I'll find out then if I can be banded. I sure hope so. Been fighting weight all my life; and now I have diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other lovelies. God blessed me with a loving, supportive husband of 24 years and a wonderful 19 year old son who is currently in college. Life is good and full; in more ways than one! I've been reading for several weeks; learning as much as I can from you fine folks. My surgeon is Anthony Terracino if anyone is familiar with him... Well, other than the fact that I'm retired on disability since 1995 due to complications from a craniotomy (lupus related); that's about all there is to tell about me. I enjoy gardening when I am able, our church family, and we like to travel but haven't been able to this past year because of my loss of mobility. And I have a ton of great friends! They really keep me going. Looking forward to sharing more with you soon. Hugs, Susie

A Few Bites Then To The Toliet
DetChatt replied to Kami172000's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep in mind that some of this may be in your head too. One bad experience, and your mind could play tricks on you and "close up" before you get a fork near your mouth. Try some deep breathing before you eat. Also drink something about 30 minutes before to tell yourself that you're fine and the food WILL go through. But if you find something is giving you trouble (even if you've eaten it fine before), lay off that for a week and go on to something else. There were foods that I suddenly couldn't eat anymore a YEAR after my band. Give yourself time to adjust after those fills. You'll react differently to each one, so it's going to be a lot of trial and error. -
I'm 1 week post-op today and still on clear liquids and skim milk. I don't start any pureed food until 2 weeks out.

Weight gain post tummy tuck
farmgirl04 replied to farmgirl04's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Thanks miz73, the swelling in my legs isn't so much swelling as not as flabby up high as I remembered! On a lighter note, I asked my daughter who is a ob/gyn resident who, with kindness, had nothing sweet to say to me about getting on the scale after surgery. She said basically just what you said. Fluid retention, and strict orders to stay off the scale for a few weeks I guess I had dreams of seeing 135 again! -
You are still healing and some will take 4-5 weeks to heal. Do only liquids for the first 10 days or follow your doctors orders completely. Do not deviate! I added an extra week of liquids to my post op to make sure I was okay in the healing process. People want to lose their weight quickly and hopefully look good. A BNig mistake! Take it slower and steady and learn how to eat good and make proper choices. This is a Lifetime committment. Best wishes

I have been big my whole life but I have always been active. Until my 40's. I always played sports and have a physical job. But then age & injuries ended my sports day and a promotion at work meant sitting on my butt. I slowly started to gain weight. I did the Atkins diet and had great luck. I got down to 280 and I was hiking, kayaking and felt great. Then summer happened. It's a busy time with work and I started putting the weight back on. Then my mother got sick and was in the hospital for 6 months. By the time she went into hospice I was spending 18 hrs a day in the hospital. Vending machine snacks and hospital food. Next thing I knew I weight 370lbs! Last year I tried Weight Watchers and lost 35/40 lbs. Then I hit a wall. 2 months no weight loss. Summer came and back to the rat race and off WW. I only put a few lbs back on and seem to level out at about 340. Then this past December we went to Disney World with the kids. (18,19 & 23yrs old) My back problems & foot pain really took their toll. It was there at Disney I decided enough was enough. The beginning of January I started the process. The I got the flu and was sick most on the month. I started getting my clearances in Feb and was schedule for late March. Only problem is my pulmonologist would not sign off. Three sleep studies later and a breathing machine for my apnea & I was cleared at 3:30 the day before my April 25th surgery! I have a few health issues that have played in to my Lap-Band decision. Type II diabetes (major factor in my mothers passing), sleep apnea, high blood pressure & cholesterol. And my back is shot. Surgeon told me that I'm going to need surgery at some point and that I need to lose weight or my rehab will be brutal. And losing weight may put it off for a few more years. Things seem to be going as planned. I have no major complaints. I miss certain foods. Big time. I still get hungry more than I would like. Going through some major lifestyle changes. My girlfriend and I love to go out to eat! We live in NJ just a short drive from Atlantic City and dozens of world class restaurants!!! A couple of weeks ago a had a bit of a set back. We went to a VIP party for the new Atlantic City Margaritaville. Open bar and free food all over. While I did ok with the eating I had a lot to drink! I paid the next day as my stomach let me know that I screwed up. I gained three pounds and did not lose any weight for a week. Lesson learned. A good friend who had the surgery a year ago told me that once I get my first adjustment things are going to change and my reaction to something like that will be more immediate. I hope that I have learned my lesson! That's the Readers Digest version of how I ended up on this journey. So Thursday I have my first adjustment and another phase of this journey will begin.... :-)

This is to those of you how have done this already. I'll give hard numbers so it makes sense I hope. My surgery was two weeks ago tomorrow. The morning I went in I weighed 143. I don't know how much he took (I'd guess 6 pounds, I forgot to ask). Today I weight 144! I know I'm getting NO exercise, obviously, but I'm also being very careful about what I eat. I'm eating less than pre surgery to try to balance the lack of calorie use. I know once I can start even walking things will get back on track, but is this normal? Is this fluid? I have one drain still in, but it has finally stopped much output so it will be removed Tuesday. FYI, I feel like the weight is going to my thighs. Is this some weird head game I'm playing on myself, is this normal, did you guys go through this as well? I'm torn between eating to recover and not eating to take the weight off! Help!

Hello fellow bandsters.... Okay..So I got my surgery on Aug. 4th 2011. I'll admit that the first 3 weeks were Hell... On my 3rd week I thought I was going to die...but on the 4th week..had no hunger at all. So, I can say it has gotten better. The problem I have now is that..I was told there was no Fluid in my band. I did good with my diet, but I had problems still with portion control and chewing good. A few times I've swollowed my food and it hurt going down because it was too much. Lol...I try to remember what I was told while eating. I worried that I messed up the band a few times...But..another part of me said...well..you really don't have any restrictions until your first fill, because there's no fluid in your band. WELL...I went for my first fill yesterday and the doctor pulled out 4cc! I was ticked off because they told me there wasn't anything in there after surgery. Started thinking about what and how I ate and got scared. I could've done serious damage to myself. But..I never had any pain or vomiting this whole time. They put the 4cc back in and added 1cc more. Well, I put myself on liquids again..just in case my lap band is in trouble. So, even if you are told there is nothing in your band...follow your diet and comply..in case you get a surprise, as I did. Any advise would be great at this time. I'm still feeling alittle guilty and nervous.. Thanks!

Ok so I was banded 2/16 and on my two week pre-op I lost 9 lbs. 1 week post op I lost 4.5 lbs and at my 2 week post op mark I had lost another 7 lbs. Well I weighed myself today and it looks like I gained back 4 lbs!! I can't believe that so early on I'm already going backwards. This is so depressing. I'll be honest, I did eat somethings that I shouldn't have but not in a large quantity. My sister-in-laws bday was on saturday and she asked me to make her a german chocolate cake (from scratch) :drool:and I did and I had a couple peices over the week. That was the only bad thing I had really. Would that really cause me to gain 4 lbs??? The slices were so small and i only ate it once a day. I even went back to low carb foods, no pasta, bread or rice and I still gained. I'm so sad right now. I guess another part of it is that I haven't been able to work out like I want to. My doc said no machines just walking until my first fill on 3/16 and I want to do more. I just really want to this weight off. I'm so tired of being uncomfortable in my own skin. Any advice is appreciated.

6 per week is a drinking problem? My friend must be a full-blown alcoholic, cuz she can knock back 10 at a time! -
psych eval for surgery
agirlofaith replied to tlynn4love's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was pretty simple. I'm an easy going person though and chatted it up with her. I felt comfortable and it was easy to talk to her. She did say because I drink roughly (6 beers a week) that I was borderline having a drinking problem. Thought that was a little strange but assured her it was socially for football and what ever. She passed me! -
Thank you. I am going to look into it, either way. The mexico thing is not an option for me at all, I just don't have that kind of money and no options for borrowing it either. I am going to do some calling next week to find out what I would have to do to get this done. As soon as I know what the requirements are I will post it here.

clear liquids one day before surgery
Margaret posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love this forum and all the nine million before-surgery requirements. Mine is simple: clear liquids for one day. Now, does that include the Unjury chicken broth? I can always ask the group nutritionist and will, but this forum has so much more fun involved with every question. Here I have ONE LITTLE day to mind the food before surgery and I'm already worried about getting a headache. Woe is me! How do people going to Mexico get to eat tacos and drink wine the night before surgery! Do they not have to drink that awful stuff and "sit" around the house for 6 hours? One more week for me.....
