Can It Really Hurt Me?
khlut replied to katiecakes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Katiecakes: I was banded 6-18-12 and dont get a fill until 7-26-12 . Hang in there. My nutritionist said you are able to eat normal amounts because there is no restriction yet without a fill. Unfortunately it is all willpower without a fill. When I started getting hungry I drank more Protein shakes, Jello, sugar free Popsicles, yogurt and eventually cottage cheese. My weightless is at a standstill and I assume will be until my fill. I'm down 24 lbs since pre op diet started, which I'm fine with. It's a marathon not a sprint. -

Chest pain normal?
leelee7 replied to sthompson1270's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stace, I just had my surgery on Monday 14 July and came on here to ask the same question, so guess it is a common thing to happen. I was told to take Prilosec OTC (by the nurse prior to surgery). I have begun taking it, but it takes a while to get into your system, I presume. I have this pain constantly, so am guessing it is heartburn. I am also having a problem with a searing, burning pain whenever I bend over the slightest bit or turn the least bit in bed. The pain is coming from the port area wound. Guessing this is normal as well....you having this problem? How are you coming along with the liquid diet? Are you having success with knowing when you are full without getting overfull? I haven't had much appetite, cannot stand broth, so that is out for me. I am now on phase two or full liquids where at least I can have liquidy cream of wheat and yogurt added to my diet. I have also added grits to give me something salty. I needed those...they really tasted good to me. Funny how something normally so plain taste so great now. LOL! I cannot eat much of course, but am having a hard time with not drinking during my meal. I am also having a hard time drinking enough liquids and taking all of my vitamins. Not use to either. Good luck with your diet and your weight loss. Where do they get the ticker goal loss thingys? Any idea? Jodi -
What foods/drinks do you crave that surprised you after surgery?
FindingElise replied to Daydra's topic in Food and Nutrition
I started getting the weirdest cravings about 3 weeks out of surgery. I was dying for something salty, so I took tiny sips of pickle juice right out of the jar. I can't explain how refreshing it felt, waking up in the middle of the night and standing at the fridge drinking pickle juice! Then came my broccoli cravings. Once I finally had a taste of a piece of steamed broccoli, it hurt like crazy in my sleeve, so that was disappointing. I'm pretty much over my cravings now (at 15 weeks out), and if anything, there are foods I can't stand the thought of - mainly yogurt, applesauce, horseradish cheese (yes, yes...this is an odd one), Laughing Cow cheese wedges, and oatmeal. These are things I got very ill on at some point during the early stages of my recovery, so I'm completely turned off from them. -
What Did You Have For Breakfast? In A Rut
Jachut replied to indacrucible's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I make home made toasted muesli with oats, LSA, chia, almonds, coconut and sunflower and pumpkin seeds - loaded with fibre, good fats, and much higher in Protein than most cereals. I have a quarter cup with a Few spoonfuls of yogurt and halfa sliced banana. I rarely deviate - I am a total carbaholic and this gives me my fix in a healthier way, plus with my bowel issues I really suffer if I don't eat whole grains daily. Occasionally I have a junky breakfast like a piec of that with Peanut Butter, but I would never choose foods like bacon or eggs, I couldn't stomach those in the morning. -
I was banded in May 2011 by Dr.Ortiz in TJ Mexico. I can't believe it's been 9 months since surgery. I have only kept the first 10 pounds off since surgery. I have had 2 fills & I'm at 8cc in a 10cc band. I know what I'm doing to sabotage my success...I don't exercise, I eat foods that are "easy" to eat (ice cream, yogurt, pudding, and i have found that if you smother things with ranch dressing & butter & it goes down easier, and chocolate!) I get VERY discouraged but I've realized it's not the band, it's ME! I thought it would be a quick fix, I yo-yo with my weight & I wanted something that would regulate my food, which the band does, but I have gotten used to the loop-hole way of eating around the band. At least I can say I haven't gained. I started to go to the gym about 3 weeks ago & that has helped a lot, now I need to work on the food side. I would like to lose the last 30 pounds by my 1 year anniversary date in May....so I've got 14 weeks...and I hope with the support of this site, and my new found resolution to be rid of the control I let food have over me & realize I'M WORTH THE EFFORT, I will achieve my goal!! Thanks for reading my rant, I hope you all have success on your lap-band journey, cause it ain't easy!!!

Have you tried putting protein powder in yogurt?

Mushies already? (1 wk post op)
fullhandsfullheart posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved last Monday, so tomorrow will be 1 wk. The class I went to, and the instructions they sent me home with both said full liquids 10-14 days, then start mushies.... Well..... my surgeon just called to check on me. He said I can go ahead and start mushies now. What? LOL I mean, trust me, I want something besides liquid. But it threw me for a loop because that wasn't what I was taught. He said to start with yogurt. Anyone else start mushies 1 wk out? Or was it more like 2 wks? I'm not sure what to do. -

I have a real sweet tooth and was a big ice cream eater. To help those cravings, I sometimes freeze regular light yogurt (Yoplait's my favorite so far), or will mix some flavor of fat-free, sugar-free pudding in with some Cool Whip Free - that has a nice, creamy texture and is quite tasty! I also love putting sugar free jam on things - like the cool whip mix or cottage cheese - it's almost like ice cream toppings. I also haven't given up my coffee, but I have switched to CoffeeMate Light and continue to use Sweet N Low or Splenda. My surgeon said there's no real reason to stop coffee as long as I'm not loading it with sugar and cream. So far it's worked for me - still losing and when I don't it's because I've eaten something I shouldn't, or more likely I've eaten right before bed - that's my worst time. -

I am assuming that you are probably communicating from Australia perhaps. Due to the use of metrics and the fact that you are about to fall asleep. So maybe the regiment on Bariatric Surgery might be somewhat different there. Here in the States, they provide us with a document that provides a basic meal plan. The document describes the volume of food to be consumed at each meal based on the stage after surgery (first 4 weeks, weeks 5-8, weeks 9-15, months 4-6, months 7-9, months 10-12, months 12-18 and months 18 and beyond). It delineates each meal by ounces of Protein, starch, fruit, and vegetables). Then it defines which items (such as yogurt, Beans, rice etc.) are approved in each category at any given time after surgery. This meal plan is very complicated and regimented. When you went through surgery, did you receive the same type of document.

Having doubts -- still a food centered life?
blondebomb replied to Thinside's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
haha..I was "weighing food" for several months and logging everything! it was mentally exhausting me! for me I do well to get in 2 to 3 oz a meal and whats left (yes I always have left on my small plate) the dog is patiently waiting to get the rest! she knows its coming ! I eat protein 1st...always and my snacks are protein (raw pecans, cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt). I do like my chike protein powder coffee drink! after months of logging MFP I learned what I was eating and the nutrition and other count info..I have stuck with that. so I have backed off. for me it taught me. but its there a great tool if I need to go back to using it.. -
HELP! Samples meals need, I'll Start
lapbandgirl4life replied to 2KpUpwithAvery's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There's a new book by Hungry Girl called 200 recipes under 200 calories. In case anyone is a huge Pasta fan, there's good news for us! There is now pasta made out of tofu and what's more is it is only 20 calories per serving!!! It comes in different forms like spaghetti, angel hair, etc. With the warmer weather now, instead of having an ice cream, I take my crystal lite, add a little Water and ice to the blender and make myself a slushie. It's very satisfying and a great way to get your fluids in! Oh and with blackberries being on sale, I made a blackberry smoothie, which was delicious and actually stuffed me. It was all under 200 caloies. 1 small banana 1/2 cup blackberries 1/2 cup lite/fat free vanilla yogurt 1/2 cup ice. Blend til smooth and enjoy! -
The first week post-op I was advised to get at least 48 grams of Protein per day. Initially, I went with New Whey because it was liquid and a 3.4oz shot had 42 grams. However, the tast was, well, less than appealing. There are many choices on the market for protein from shakes to unflavored protein you can add to your various meals. Like stated above your primary goal is protein first then Water. One thing I like to do is add my chocolate protein to vanilla Greek yogurt for a nice pudding-like consistency. To answer your question, yes. You can essentially sip the protein infused milk all day. I'd recommend a way to keep it cold. But, as long as you're getting no less than 48grams in your first week (then no less than 60grams for the next 3 wks) you're good.

Congrats, I hope I don't have the same problem... I have to put my Greek yogurt in the freezer first otherwise I gag on it... Oh well I'll see when it arrives.. I start pre op diet 8/29.

Eas Sports Drink 11 Oz ..7 Days Out...
DebInAZ replied to muffintop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ME TOO!! I to am surprised that I can drink so much, yesterday I drank about the same but it was made at home and it only took me an average time as though I had nothing done. I also have not had any of the issues others have had, I can drink a 20oz bottle of water in about 15/20 mins?. My Dr. gave me a DVD of my surgery, if it weren't for that I would think nothing at this point happened. hahaha I did eat about 2 1/2 oz of yogurt last night and I was full for the rest of the night...so I think its just that maybe our swelling wasn't as severe as others which is good for us...I know as of about the 5th day out I have not had any issues regarding getting all my water in! -
I'm almost 5 months out and only use unjury. In the beginning, I used the chicken broth, mixed with warm, not hot Water and more water than it calls for. I loved it and it was comforting for me. I used the unflavored only in milk-based products like yogurt and pudding. I didn't use the chocolate until about a month ago because it was too sweet for me. I got my Protein mostly from cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, and soft meats. Then a month ago I started experimenting with the chocolate and vanilla powders. I posted earlier today in recipe sharing a shake with chocolate splendor powder, espresso powder, and chocolate almond unsweetened milk. Add a few ice cubes and blend and it's like a mocha milk shake. So yummy!

That is soooo awesome....and what a great opportunity for you:clap2: So here is an example of foods included in my diet during each stage: Liquids: Tomato juice, 100% fruit juice (no sugar added), creamy Soups w/out chunks (campbells Soup at hand was great for this), 1/2 C of slim fast at each meal, yogurt, smoothies, and Jello. Puree: I bought a food processor and made all of my meals like baby food. Some things I enjoyed (although they looked disgusting) were tuna salad, tofu (sometimes w/ brown rice), cooked carrots, cooked peas, baked Beans, chili, chicken, avacados, mashed potato, bake potato, canteloup, bananas, cottage cheese, grits, and anything from my liquid diet...I was also able to take certain lean cuisine meals (the ones w/ brown rice) an puree those...I could only eat 1/2 at a sitting. Soft Foods - I am now chewing foods. So basically it is everything mentioned above only I am allowed to chew it up. I am also able to add whole wheat Pasta, whole wheat toast, eggs, oatmeal, and crackers. Still no raw veggies or tough fruits (i.e. apples), no nuts, or white bread. So today...I had my first few crackers w/ salmon salad from whole foods...so far so good! I will get my fills in Mexico for now. I work from Houston a lot, so the travel is cheap, and I am a part of a fill prgm w/ OCA hospital so those are free. I will go sometime in April after my 6 week mark. So tell me more about you...your experience...where you are w/ the band...etc.

I went protein crazy!
kjr2016 replied to gettingsleeved1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been finding the vanilla and chocolate Protein powders mixed with milk a little too sweet, so I started mixing them with other things. Vanilla mixed with greek yogurt cuts the tanginess and ends up tasting a little like cream cheese frosting (but not as sweet). Chocolate Protein Powder in a SF chocolate pudding was good too. -
I went protein crazy!
kjr2016 replied to gettingsleeved1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does anyone know how long you can store a food with Protein powder mixed in? For example, I like greek yogurt mixed with vanilla Protein Powder enough that I'm thinking of mixing up a few days' worth to have for Breakfast. Is the shelf life the same as the base product (i.e. the yogurt) or does the protein make it spoil or separate or whatever, faster? Also, I know you can't add protein to hot liquids but could you mix the protein with say, cold broth and then heat it up later? Thanks in advance for your sage advice! -
Constipation?
Tiffykins replied to shezaditz@bellsouth.net's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have only had a couple of episodes of major constipation. Miralax is fabulous, and I found that when I would eat yogurt and take Probiotics, I became more regular. I go every day now. I think it's because I'm in a different stage, and I drink my normal cup of coffee every morning. The only time I skip a day is when I eat a bunch of cheese and Protein only. My surgeon said no no to laxatives and stool softeners used on a regular basis only because our bodies get used to having the stimulant effect. Also, stool softeners tend to pull the fluids from the rest of your body to soften the stool with more liquids to help it pass. He did say if we had to take a stool softener then to increase our clear liquid intake to compensate for the stool softener usage. I've only had to take Miralax a few times (like 4 -5 times) over the last 11 months. I mix it in some juice or crystal light, and drink it slowly. I also only use a half dose. It may take it a few more hours to work, but I'm not looking to have explosive poops after being constipated. -
I'm currently on full liquids and I've gotten tired of eating my Soups out of a can so today, finally feeling well enough I decided to cook my own Soup. I used things I had on hand and this tuned out DELISH!! Its a little carby but I was lacking in Protein and this was a good protein recipie. 1 chicken breast 4 cups chicken stock 1 chicken bullion 1 can northern white Beans ¼ cup chopped parsley 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp curry powder ¼ cup greek yogurt 1/4 cup of milk I didn't realize it would make as much as it did, I'm still getting used to small servings lol. Next time I think I'll use more chicken breast considering how many servings to get the protein a bit higher. It made me 7 1/2 cup servings Cut up chicken in cubes, put in stock and bring to a boil with the white beas, bullion, parsley, garlic and curry powder. Let boil. Once boiled and chicken is cooked puree in a blender. If you're not on liquids anymore I suggest pureeing only hald and leaving the other half chunky! But was delish all smooth! Put back in pot, return to heat and stir in milk and greek yogurt. Heat until smooth and creamy and you're done! Nutritional info for 1/2 a cup serving Calories: 74 Fat: .1 Carbs: 10 Fiber 3 Protein 7
