    Worried loosing too FAST

I know that exact feeling. It is called Body Dysmorphia and rapid changes can have that effect on our brains. I am slowly coming to terms with it myself as I have lost 120 lbs since my highest weight. Even buying clothes was not easy for me at first because the fitting rooms were not open and I didn't buy clothes until the clothes I was wearing were basically falling off.

    Scale

Any scale recommendations? My scale is giving me numbers all over the place. I started around 330 pre op. Now that I'm below 300, I can't get a good number on my digital scale. My weight ranged from 295 to 277 this morning. I usually try to get numbers twice so I can get consistency, but that would be 277. Yesterday it was 288. I doubt I had 11 pound drop in a day. Advice? Skin removal surgery

not sure where you are in NC (I lived in NC for many years!), but there are several surgeons around the country who deal primarily (or exclusively) with massive weight loss patients who did their residences under Joseph Hunstad in the Charlotte area. I don't know of anyone who's actually gone to Dr. Hunstad for surgery, but since he's trained so many specialists, he may be one to take a look at, too. I just googled him - his website (hkbsurgery) is down at the moment also - check realself.com for reviews done by patients. They review all kinds of doctors, but most seem to be plastic surgeons.
  4. I’m 52 and post-menopausal. Since my surgery on 02/09/21 I’ve only lost 38 lbs. My surgeon only told me “it’s not a race” and to “keep up the good work “ but I feel like I should have lost more by now. Before surgery my weight was 275, SW was 242, current weight is 206. I’ve been stuck at 206 for almost a month now and am feeling very frustrated. I’ve read where post-menopausal women will lose at a much slower rate so I’m just chalking it up to that. Anybody else post-menopause having the same issues? FYI... I see a hormone specialist and all my hormones have been balanced to “normal.”

    Skin removal surgery

Thank you for sharing this information! This is very helpful. When I was living in NC I researched surgeons there but didn't find any that I felt would provide the results that I was looking for, just based on reviews that I had seen on their websites. I completed some very minimal research for surgeons within the US as well. I am excited about losing the rest of the weight and having skin surgery in the future. When I had my breast consult completed last year, the surgeon that I spoke with told me that ultimately I would need to also consider if I wanted to have any future surgeries before or after I have children because pregnancy can affect the results. However, I feel like because my skin has been stretched out from weight loss/gain over the years repetitively (especially in my abdomen area) if I were to get the skin removal surgery on my abdomen before I have children it will make a significant difference because the elasticity within the skin on will be reset to a certain degree, and there will not be as much stretching/sagging afterward. The breast surgeon that I completed the consult with told me that pregnancy could potentially cause my breast to become raised and plumper. He also recommended breast implants and provided me with the side effects and other recommendations that come with that surgery. I will definitely research the surgeons you have recommended to see which one will be the best option for me financially and will go from there. Thanks again for all of your help!

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

I looked gaunt when I reached my lowest weight (or as my uncle told my mother ‘like death’ ☹️) but a few months later I looked fine. I really believe too that things resettle in your body. You are doing well with your weight loss. Though it’s important to remind yourself that you’ll lose at your rate. Some people lose slowly, some more quickly. Both are the right way. But yes, unless your starting weight was in excess of 600lbs you’re not going to be losing the large amounts they do on that show to begin. And if you do watch that show, you’ll notice their weight loss slows the more they lose. Also during the surgery, they pump you up with gas & fluids & it can take days to rid your body of the excess. Add in if your constipated, & your scales may not go down & may even go up. (I had my gall bladder removed last week & when I got home 24hrs later I weighed almost 3kgs, about 6lbs, more. I lost about 2kgs in one day & another kilo over the next two days. I was peeing like a race horse & my bowels started working again.)

    Weight stall

My last stall also lasted almost 3 weeks & I was only about a kilo from goal. Super frustrating. I just stuck to my plan & that last kilo went. It is possible you could have reached your low point but don’t give up. Just wait it out for a few weeks & see what happens. If you want to lose more you either need to reduce your calories intake &/or increase your activity. Congrats on your weight loss.

Scared to stop losing going into puréed stage??

500 calories is 500 calories regardless of where the calories comes from. (500 calories is just a random number pulled from nowhere in particular.) If you eat a big piece of chocolate cake equal to 500 calories & nothing else for the rest of the day it is exactly the same as getting 500 calories from protein shakes. The difference is the quality of nutrients in those calories. Your body will burn the calories to function but it just won’t function well on the calories from the cake alone. As you slowly introduce real food you will slowly be consuming more calories but they are nutritionally dense calories which your body needs to function well & healthily. It’s important to monitor your food intake, portion sizes & calories consumed to ensure you’re following your plan & taking best advantage of your surgery. Your weight loss will slow as you progress. The glory days of the first weeks are just a kickstart. But every pound you lose is a win. Just watch the downward trend than the just numbers on the scale & celebrate all your non scale victories. Stalls happen. I liked to think of them as my body taking a breath to catch up with the changes. I know some people suggest cutting back your calories. I never did & my first stall only lasted a week. Your stall will end when it ends. Congrats on your surgery & good luck.
  9. This may seem like a strange question. I am just wondering if I need to make a special appointment with the bariatric psychologist on my team. I have lost now 60 pounds since the day of surgery RNY on February 24. Not quite 3 1/2 months yet. I feel like I’m losing weight too fast and I really don’t know how to cope with it. Everybody seems so excited and happy for me but I can’t wrap my brain around what’s happening. I did not do this for weight loss I did it for fixing severe Gerd so maybe that’s why I feel “weird”... I told my boyfriend that I just feel like I am in someone else’s body, lol 😂 The best way to explain this feeling is when something is too good to be true it almost feels skeptical - And you can’t let yourself be “happy”.... Has anybody else felt disbelief in the weight loss amount?!

    June Surgeries

I’m feeling much better than I anticipated. For me, the pain was not bad at all. If I was laying perfectly still, I could not feel a thing. The strongest pain meds I took were Tramadol and I only took those for the first 12 hours and then just at night for the first two nights. For me, the key was getting up and walking. Also getting my back pounded on to get rid of gas pains. I had a companion traveling with me but the patient staying in the room next door to me took advantage of the companion care and it was a really great experience. Out of towners all stay on the third floor of the hotel and you’ll see several walking the halls at all hours. Also the hotel rooms all have a section separate from the bed area that has sofa, etc. so there is some space. The visit from Nurses the evening after surgery for IV of fluids and anti nausea drugs was the best thing ever. I don’t know how long your journey home is, but I had two flights — 4 1/2 and then 1 hour — and I believe the timing was about right. It was really good to shower in my own bathroom and sleep in my own bed. my BMI was not as low as yours I think it was at 38, and I’m only 5’ 2” so I wasn’t expecting to lose much. I lost about five pounds from the time I started two week pre-op diet and the day before surgery. I was happy with that and as of today have lost a total of 10 pounds. WARNING - Blossom will weigh you the day after surgery when you go in for IV and final visit. I gained a pound but totally expected that because of all the IVs I got from surgery. feel free to ask any other questions and I’ll be happy to share my experience. So far it’s been great!
  11. I am 20 years post-op and have maintained my weight loss. I took all of the vitamins and B-12 but neglected the calcium. Well, after 5 broken vertebrae, collar bone and toe, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. 10 months ago I started taking calcium citrate and extra D3 twice a day, and daily injections of Tymlos, I am close to normal with bone density. TAKE YOUR CALCIUM and VITAMINS!!!!

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

also, I don't think most patients end up with a sick look. Some do, but I don't think most of us do. And like I said, most patients never even make it to normal weight let alone get too thin - they end up "overweight" or "class I obese" (which is, of course, infinitely better than being super morbidly obese....). Here's me at my lowest weight - and where my body naturally stopped losing. I was at a normal BMI (still am), which if you'll look at stats, only 10-15% of WLS patients are able to make it to. So there'd be a pretty small percentage of people become too thin - smaller than the 10-15% who make it to a normal BMI. Again, yes, some - but chances of that are pretty low. I'd focus on losing as much weight as you can during the early months - but of course, while eating according to your plan. You need the nutrition.

I agree with others that you are doing great. 14 pounds of weight loss in two weeks is incredible. I have only lost 25 in 12 weeks but I am still steadily losing. Idk your starting BMI but based on your weight you are somewhat lower BMI and weight loss will be slower than those with higher BMI’s. Several people on here have said that they continued to lose weight for like two years so the important thing is not how fast you lost it Just the overall trend downwards. Just hang in there you will lose it.

I would be very careful with smoothie king. I think their smoothies usually have lots of sugar and juice, both of which are not good for weight loss. Also, make sure the chicken strips don't have breading/aren't fried. And many people look a bit "drawn" after they lose a lot of weight but you'll see from people on this board that their weight tends to settle over time. Make sure that the nutrients you're getting are from real food rather than commercial smoothies or you check to make sure there are no sugars or fruit juices in the smoothies.

Scared to stop losing going into puréed stage??

the vast majority of us experience stalls along our journey. It's an extremely common part of weight loss. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale if you need to whenever you hit one. As long as you're following the plan, the stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again.

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

14 lbs in two weeks is a lot, especially given your starting weight isn't nearly as high as some of ours was. I lost 16 lbs the whole first MONTH and I started out at 373 lbs. Not sure what you were expecting, but your loss is very normal . If you're trying to compare your loss to the people on "My 600 lb Life", don't. Those people start off MUCH heavier than the average WLS patient, and starting BMI has a huge effect on how much weight you lose initially. You are fine.

just stick to your plan and stay off the scale if you need to. The weight loss should start up again..

    Skin removal surgery

I see you're in Virginia. If you want a nationally known surgeon who specializes in body contouring for massive weight loss patients, then Joseph Michaels in Bethesda is one to consider. I believe he's also on the faculty at Johns-Hopkins, and he does his surgeries at two different hospitals. it's usually cheaper to have more than one procedure done at a time, but some surgeons don't want their patients under anesthesia for more than six hours or so (plus...they get tired! I don't really want some tired guy with a knife working on me!). If yours is one who limits the time, then whether you have it done in one or two surgeries depends on what all you want done. You might want to set up some consults - somewhere between 3-5 consults is good, because some of them will have different ideas than others. Sometimes consults are free, sometimes they'll charge you for them ($100 or so), but if the latter, they'll usually deduct that cost from your surgery if you go with them. Even if they didn't, it's still not bad - they're spending time with you, so... if you're comfortable going to Mexico, you'll usually pay much less for surgery. Just do a lot of research before you go. There are some excellent surgeons there - and some not so good. Francisco Saucedo in Monterrey and Laura Cardina Carmenas in Tijuana also specialize in body contouring for massive weight loss patients and have done several of us. I've read on here that plastic surgery in Miami tends to be cheaper than elsewhere in the US, but i don't know of any surgeons there - but some people on this site have used them and can get you names.
  19. My surgery has been delayed many times due to a hiatal hernia, asthma attacks, GERD, and a questionable Barrett’s esophagus. I had to refocus my attention on my feelings to say weight loss is a goal. It’s a long term goal like achieving my bachelors degree and master’s degree. It’s a long term process that has nothing to do with my worthiness but how much effort I put forth, AND my perseverance. Sometimes I journal my disappointment, distract myself with tictock videos, do a short term task that has immediate results like cleaning. I picture each moment as a small pearl slowly sliding onto a necklace. I get scared thinking about the absolutely giant necklace of healthy living for a lifetime, so instead I try to concentrate on one pearl of living healthy in this moment. I distract myself enough living in the moment, then look back and become proud of the pearl necklace I have built so far. It’s ok to feel all the feelings. Just sit with them, let them become a pearl moment. Yeah, therapy is awesome :)

    Skin removal surgery

Is there a specific surgeon that anyone would recommend? Also, is it better to have multiple procedures completed at once, versus having one procedure completed at a time? I am just thinking about the cost financially and the cost that is associated with having multiple procedures completed previously before. I had a breast consult done completed last year and plan to have another consult done to talk about my stomach area but want to loose the remaining weight first (20-30 pounds). Thanks for your recommendations!
  21. I’m 10 days post op. SW 279 CW 250.4. I’m struggling with being able to consume more than 2-3 bites. My concern is the “sick look” most surgery pots have. I want my weight loss to look natural and healthy. I have a family member who had surgery last year she’s lost a lot of weight but it looks sick on her. I’m focusing on nutrient dense vitamin packed foods. I walk 7-8000 steps a day and have been eating Smoothie King mostly n chicken strips. Stay optimistic ❤️
  22. I’m from North Carolina and had my weight loss surgery in Charlotte. My surgeons name is Dr. Kuwada.
  23. I am almost 8 weeks post surg, I am doing great, lost weight, I was on 3 diabetes meds and now only 1, Gerd is doing good, I was on 11 meds and now only 4 including bariatric vitamins. I am so blessed that I have not had a bad experience with my sleeve surgery as others, beyond the first week. My only problem is still BM issues, but I am dealing with it. I am so happy I did this. Hang in there I know it will get better for you all soon. God Bless

    Weight stall

It's not uncommon for a stall to last 1-2 weeks. No reason to go back to purees. That doesn't make you lose weight faster. It just aids the healing tummy by giving it softer, easier to digest food that doesn't hurt the healing staple line etc. Just make sure you're eating what you're supposed to be eating according to your surgery center's instructions. Usually high protein, low carb, veggies, and stopping when you're satisfied, not full. No grazing.
  25. So I am 1 month post op and am down 28 lbs. my starting weight was 245 lbs, My surgery day weight was 235 lbs and I’m now 217 lbs. I have no regrets. I had the gastric bypass on 5/6. My heartburn that I’ve experienced for years is GONE. It’s like magic. My sleep apnea is already better and I’m fitting into clothes that have been excruciatingly tight. I have more energy and can climb stairs at work without wanting to die. I have zero regrets. However, this decision was a risk benefit analysis. In my mind the risks of serious health complications secondary to my obesity were way higher than me getting the surgery. That’s not to say that this has been easy. I have a complicated relationship with food. I eat too much, I vomit. I eat something like candy (even the smart low sugar candy) I get dumping. Mashed potatoes, one of my favorite foods makes me dump. But I’m now craving healthy food like salad, fruits and veggies instead of Taco Bell and soda. If you feel like you’re ready and truly understand the risks than go for it. So far the best thing I’ve ever done.
