Protein Intake Suggestion
NewMrsSmith replied to KalelsWifey's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you so much! I have been steady on protein but there are days of struggle because I'm still in the full liquid stage and don't have a lot of options. I do drink isopure and protein shake and yogurt daily but like the idea of adding crystal light to the isopure to help with taste! -
I just wanted to check in. I hope everyone is doing well and improving every day. I had my first follow-up appointment yesterday and everything is going well. I told my mom and my sister (who will tell everyone else) how much I lost, but I told them that I am not going to announce my weight loss every time. I don't want to get caught up in numbers. I have been able to reach my Protein goal since the second day I was allowed Clear liquids. The protein and Water numbers are the only measurements I want to focus on. The highlight of this week is my transition to full liquids. Cottage cheese, V8, and yogurt taste so good. I am looking forward to soft foods. In addition, I am eager for my incisions to heal and the weather to warm enough to get in the pool. I can't believe how quickly time has gone by post-surgery. May is going to be a great month.

By the way you could serve them with yogurt/cucumber sauce but it honestly is not necessary, they are very moist.

HI! Congrats on your upcoming surgical date! I would stick with the milk but maybe start going to the lactose free kind. many of us find we are lactose intolerant after the bypass for some weird reason! I can still do my Greek yogurt and some cheese in small amounts but a shake full of milk...no way! lol I say stay with the milk because Protein is going to be so important in your life so soon. your adding about ten more grams to your shakes with your 8oz of milk, not to mention some key nutrients because milk is a REAL food and you will have to ease back into those slowly at first. Your body will always absorb and heal and just thrive better on real foods so, keep the milk going while you have to lean on the shakes! Also, don't be bummed about the slow loss before surgery, a lot of people don't see a huge loss pre bypass. Remember though, when they DO the bypass, you get a RE DO on your who metabolic system! We get a restart on our metabolism a real do over! So, don't worry about the scale, just know your liver is gettin ready to be read like tea leaves, so its gotta look its most firm and fit! lol That is really what the pre op is all about, the real new you will be here soon enough! It's not an easy thing, but the pay offs can be aw some, you'll see! Keep on talking on here, it helps! Any other questions let all of us know! GOOD LUCK!

Good! I have not really felt sensation of hunger but more tired of having little options so that is probably why the short temper. I go to doctor on 6th and can't wait hoping u can move to soft foods. Yogurt, chicken broth protein, and isopure you can only have so much if and in variety. Any suggestions on what you all ate during the full liquid stage? Thank you all for responding.

Bathroom Issues?
wannaBthinsoon replied to Connie Fusco's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 days post op. I have my follow up appt tomorrow, exactly 1 weeks since my surgery. No BM's till yesterday and today....both were constipation, and I had to push. owie! I have added miralax to my Water now. I have been following the surgeon's eating plan to the letter, so, the constipation freaked me out a little. All I had were liquids till 2 days ago, and I was allowed 2 tbs yogurt, 2 tbs creamed, strained Soup, and 2 tbs thinned hot Cereal, which I have not tried yet.But I've been getting in more water than required. I am required to get in 40oz, I've gotten in 47oz. So, WTH is up with the constipation? .................wait................pain meds I bet! -
I eat about an hour and a half before I run. I have greek yogurt with a little granola or kashi cereal mixed in, so the carbs can fuel me through the run and then I have a high-protein dinner shortly after running.

Eating 'raw cuisine', my lap-band and, oh dear, no weight loss
Bandista replied to TheProfessor's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
While I'm not a raw foods gal I totally identify with being overweight from extremely healthy foods. That was me. I was a vegetarian for 17 years. One of the things I miss is those volume salads. We still eat a lot of nuts, etc., but I try to have four almonds and chew them into pulp then go back for more if needed. No more nut burgers or burgers of any kind, really, though I did make some fantastic fish cakes the other day. Glad you're doing so well. I have watched you because we have such similar stats in addition to other characteristics. You're doing beautifully! Oh, I should add that I continue to be surprised by what can be a slider for me. Yogurt I chunk up with a few walnuts, chia and gluten-free cereal, for example, so there's plenty of chewing. That seems to be the thing for me, the chewing activates the full signal. My beautiful fish cakes? Kind of a slider for me..... -
SIPS - stomach intestinal pylorus sparing
ShellMilliner replied to jennalia's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@kingcake You basically are a carnivore when you do the SADI or SIPS. Because of the malabsorption you are required to get 80-100 grams of protein/day and you will need to take Vitamins that are higher in ADEK (I use Celebrate). I take 3 of the Multi (high ADEK)/day, Calcuim with D3 3x/day, pepcid 2x/day, Iron with C 2x/day, and B12 weekly. I imagine like pre-op doctors are differ in their regimine this was mine. Days 1-3 (once I was cleared with the swallow test) Clear liquids. Water, broths, Jello, SF pops Days 4 - 14 Full liquids - cream Soups, cream of wheat or rice, yogurt, part skim ricotta, cottage cheese, pudding, unsweetened apple sauce Days 14 - 30 - Soft foods - can be cut easily with a fork or spoon, Cheese, deli meat, ground meats, chicken, fish, eggs, tuna Day 31 on - Regular diet -
April 16th role call - who's with me!
Bluesea71 replied to Bluesea71's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sorry gals. Meant to reply sooner but work/life has been busy lately! I am still loosing but it's at a snails pace. I don't have much body fat left on me, so I've had to rethink my original 140 goal weight. Actually, my weight went UP recently as I began training hard for an upcoming event. I have been around 150 and the last few weeks it suddenly went up to 154. Things didn't compute as my diet was the same and I was logging sometimes 14 miles per day! My size 8 jeans were becoming baggy on me, so I decided to focus on my measurements vs what the scale is reporting. Now my weight is back down to 151. My daughter and I wear the exact same clothes and she is 134, so I've come to learn that weight is just a number. I didn't like how skinny fat I had become and now that I am exercising, my muscles are becoming tone and I'm building muscle. I've accepted that I may actually gain weight as I continue exercising and as long as I like the way I look, I'm okay with that! As far as what I'm eating, I could probably clean it up a bit more. I log everything in my lose it app on my phone to maintain accountability. I eat carbs but they are not my main go-to like they were pre-surgery. A typical day consists of: a quest protein bar for breakfast, a few dried mango mid-day, a small turkey/cheese lunchables, beef jerky (although the sodium makes me retain water weight so I'm backing off a tad) and maybe a yoplait yogurt. At dinner I typically defrost one of the premade containers I have in the freezer ready to go. I find this helps me with turning to take out or drive throughs on the way home from work. Some current favorites are a stew and chicken skillet pasta dish that are portion sized and fill me up. I don't feel like I deprive myself. If I have a specific craving, I eat it. I try to avoid slider foods and there are certain foods that just don't appeal to me anymore. I can't remember the last time I had a sandwich. The idea of eating that much bread makes me want to vomit. I continue to participate in the challenges on this site and I find having to check in helps me with accountability. -
What is your max carbs per day?
NikkiDoc replied to butterfly23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't look at carbs. I was told to look at sugars per serving. If it is more than 2 grams of sugar per serving then I look at where the sugar comes from in the ingredient list. If it is certain types of sugar or more than the 5th item down I don't worry about it. Basically if the sugar comes from lactose or fructose I am good with some restrictions on fruit juice. My NUT said to also look at the sugars for my serving size so if a serving is 1 cup but I only eat half of that then I can halve the sugar listed. The sugars I avoid in the first 5 ingredients are things like: sugar, corn syrup, rice syrup, honey, glucose, dextrose, brown sugar. I am not doing a great job of explaining this. It isn't as complicated as it sounds. Mostly because I eat meat, cheese, vegetables and avoid most processed foods. Yogurt is my one exception. I just get the Chobani 100 greek yogurt. I also don't count calories. -
New here! 1 week post op
JamieLogical replied to bmontiville's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had to experiment with various protein drinks post-op, because my tastes for them definitely changed and some were less pleasant than others for my new sleeve. The ones I ended up drinking were EAS AdventEDGE Carb Control, which I bought at Walmart and Target. Another thing you can try to do is add unflavored whey protein powder to your soups and yogurts. Just be careful when adding it to soup. If the soup is too hot, it can cause the powder to curdle. -
Why is this ALL I'm thinking about now!?
FeelinGood2015 replied to KalelsWifey's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
No I absolutely cannot eat anything at this point. I found THAT out a few days ago when I got cocky and decided since I was doing so well, I would try and eat some soft pork chop. Small bites. Chewed really well. TOO EARLY. I had my first dumping event that lasted for three hours! It was horrible. I would go throw up, come back to my desk (I work from home) and sit for about 5 minutes, and then I would need to throw up again. THREE HOURS! I was taught a lesson by my body. And believe me, I heard it! So I am on the mushy/soft food phase, which is where I am supposed to be. Soft scrambled egg with a little cheese, refried Beans with cheese and guac, yogurt (I LOVE the Dannon Light and Fit Greek Whips! The lemon meringue tasts JUST like a real slice!), egg sald with light mayo, mustard, and a little dill relish, skim milk... I am fine to be here for awhile. What's really cool is that I do not miss the sodas, or my beloved sweet tea. I was a fiend with both of those and now I don't even think about them. So that's a plus. It does get better and having lost 22 pounds now, I am happy with my decision and grateful I get this chance to be healthy again. -
How long does it take you to drink a protein shake?
Stephanie Stroup McIntosh replied to MissLiss's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
During the first week, it took me most of the day to drink 1 shake. I was lucky if I could get in 2. By day 10, I could do 2 on a regular basis. I never got to more than that. Week 3 I started with purees and would get 2 shakes and maybe half a yogurt over the course of the day. -
2nd week post op
Stephanie Stroup McIntosh replied to cadegirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on full liquids. I basically just had Protein shakes. I did sneak yogurt a day or 2 before I was supposed to, but I recommend doing whatever your doctor told you to do. -

Hi ladies! So happy to see this thread for gals of our distinction. I'm 53 and had bypass surgery Tuesday, April 21st at 8:00 a.m. at Mayo Hospital where I live in Jacksonville, FL. I was on the 2 week Optifast liquid pre-op diet, which I had fun with and loved. Let me know if you want any tips in making it easier and most importantly tastier! My surgeon was quite pleased with my 15 lb. weight loss. I was so excited about my surgery that I was cracking jokes and having fun with everyone as they prepped me for surgery. I didn't have a worry in the world. My surgeon told me that because I'd done so well on the pre-op diet, my surgery only took 2 hours instead of 2 1/2 hours as he'd previously planned. Once I arrived in my large plush room, my husband, son and parents were there to greet me. I was trying my hardest to converse with them but all I wanted to do was sleep thanks to the anesthesia. The three guys went and visited on the couch/bed and my mom sat in the recliner and we talked a bit. I finally convinced them all to go home and I'd call them later. Once I woke from my drug induced nap, I woke and honestly I barely had any pain. I was walking by late afternoon and that was great. I never had much gas in the way of burping or tooting as many have. I was told by my surgeon that the CO2 they pump our abdomens with is dissipated through our blood. That's why it's so important to walk, walk, walk because it gets our blood flowing. I also had the pressure cuffs on my legs the whole time I was there. When asked by my nurse what my pain level was on a scale of 1-10, mine was never higher than a 2. She'd inject a lil something in my IV and all was good. That story changed that first night when the nurse's aid came in to "strip" my drain. My drain had been emptied throughout the day and it was no problem. When he stripped it I thought I was going to come off the bed. It felt like someone was literally pulling my artery out of my left collar bone and I thought I was going to die. I have a very high tolerance for pain and I was crying like a baby. It even left me sore. The next morning when the nurse did it, it hurt again, but at least not for as long. When my surgeon came to visit I asked him why it hurt so darned bad and he said because the drain loops up underneath the diaphram. Anyways, I was glad when he pulled it out! I passed my swallow test and then my blenderized meal that afternoon so I was discharged the day after surgery around 6 p.m. They sent me home with a prescription for percocet and some nausea med. We filled them and I was glad to be home. I took a pain pill at bedtime, two the next day and then I was finished with them. I've been totally pain free since Saturday and my incisions look amazing. They were sewn shut from the inside and then glued on the outside and most of the glue has already faded away. I've been able to get my 60 grams of Protein in every day with no problem at all. I drink 2 Premier Protein shakes (30g each) per day and 2 - 4 oz. servings of Campbells cream of chicken Soup (1 can + enough Water to make 16 oz. in my Nutribullet). I have a chronic nerve condition so I'm mixing meds 3 times per day with applesauce, so that adds about a 1/4 cup to my daily caloric intake. My typical day so far is: 474 calories, 62g protein, 17 fat, 26 carbs, 7 sugar, 10 Fiber. I'm on this pourable liquid diet for 1 week, week 2 thick pourable shakes, yogurt, etc. and then week 3 is mechanically altered foods: small distinct pieces of tender and easily chewed food low in fat and sugar. meat must be ground or flaked. Then there are stages 4 & 5. Mayo is very thorough with their protocol. I know to always lead with protein and my goal is to get my 60g's every day! I went to lunch with my girlfriends yesterday and took a little cooler with my Protein shake in it. When the waitress asked what I'd be having for lunch I said "A pretty glass with a couple of cubes of ice please". She brought me just that and I enjoyed time with my friends. We also went to Starbucks later and I enjoyed another 4 oz. of my protein shake. I'm full of energy and already feel this lifelong decision I've made is the BEST one I've ever made!!! I wish the best of luck to all my fellow April buddies and for those who've yet to have surgery, you are going to be so happy

Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Band07 replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wow yes that seems like a quick progression! I would be scared to death to put anything in my mouth that I felt my new belly wasn't ready for! I'm actually in no hurry to add anything, I want to take it slow for awhile. My plan is clear liquids only for the first week : Broth/Jello/Popcicles/Apple juice (watered down) and G2. Week 2 : Full liquids : Protein shakes/creamy soups/smoothies Week 3 : Purees : Apple sauces/yogurt/steamed mashed veggies Week 4 : Soft : Cottage cheese/Refried beans/Mashed potatoes This is my plan from Mexico, when I was sleeved in the US my surgeon was super careful with post op eating and required 4 WHOLE WEEKS of full liquids only! It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life! This is already super easy compared to that lol. Just go slow, remember just because that is your plan doesn't mean you can't go slower if you're not ready to advance. -
Post surgery pain management tips needed
ivytree56 replied to Lauren23's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 3 weeks out after having revision surgery from lapband to gastric bypass. I'm finally feeling better, but still quite fatigued. Surgery lasted over 5 hours -not due to complications, but just getting lapband out after 6 years. Definitely alot more intense than I anticipated - I thought 2 weeks off of work would be more than enough - now I'm wondering if 4 will be enough. I too had alot of pain on my left side - finally feel that is healing and no pain when reaching or bending. My biggest issue is just being tired - getting a shower and running one errand is enough to bring me home for a 2 hour nap! It is getting better everyday -just slower than I had hoped. I was in hospital for 4 days - glad they kept me that long, as I had such a hard time getting out of bed. I'm in pureed food world and its going ok - eating cream of wheat, yogurt, creamed soups, scrambled eggs, canned carrots - trying to add one new thing each day. So far I'm down 28 pounds! I'm happy to answer any questions you might have and share my experience thus far! -
Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Googler replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The post (and pre-) op plan with the clinic here is way different from in the U.S. While inpatient, clear liquids, 2-3 days after leaving the hospital, thicker liquids (shakes, milk, yogurt), then 2-3 days, soft foods--purees, puddings A week after surgery, they recommend normal foods. Very well chewed and smaller portions. I've been drinking 2-3 Protein shakes per day (24-32 g of protein each) and Soups. I did have about 2 tbs of chicken and mayo today that I'd chopped in the food processor. My abdomen is so distended and sore, I'll stick with this for as long as I can. I feel so bloated and swollen, I'll be so happy when it goes down. I didn't have a drain at all, so fluids are still in there, I'm sure. I thought I was going to bust a gut yesterday with my body forcing me to have a bowel movement. Yesterday was a baaaaaad day. -
Hi Had my sleeve done April 11th 2015 I just started my soft foods today. Everything has been great until I tried supper. Had fish and carrots. Ate about 1 oz of my fish and hardly any carrots and now I am feeling sick. Stomach is hurting and I feel like I'm going to throw up. Is this normal for the first time you eat anything more solid than yogurt and Soup?

April Sleevers! Where are you at in your Journey?
wishful_thinking replied to CandyCrushVSG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 1 week out also! So far I've lost 14 lbs. I have been able to get 60 grams of protein in the last couple of days (unfortunately, my goal is 77-96 grams...so I'm still not at my goal). I have a lot of tummy rumbling, my sleeve is very noisy. I have times where I feel hungry also, but I've seen on this board that many times than can be stomach acid and not true hungry. So I'm trying to just focus on drinking as much as I can and it seems to help. When I really feel hungry then I have applesauce, broth, jello, or yogurt, those are all on my plan for now. I don't get to soft foods until 22 days post-op. -
help I'm 7 weeks out and can't eat anything all foods stink and cant hold anything in. I am on nausea meds 1 sip of water every half hour. greek yogurt and cottage cheese cant even drink the protein shakes at all
