    Suggested Mini-goals

Great idea Vines, I am totally into mino goals. That is one thing I learned from going to Weight Watchers is never set you goal to the point that in your head it seems unatainable. I just set my mini goals to 10 percent less than whatever I currently weigh or what I weigh at the end of one goal.

    When to stop!!!

I was banded on 10/3 and lost quickly right after surgery. I just had my second fill on 12/13 and each time I feel restriction for a few days and then somewhat back to the way I felt before the fill. I have just decided if I want to see weight loss I have to act as if the band is working for me. I have been working through the hunger and getting results. My trick .... protein protein protein. It helps to get full faster and stay full longer.
  4. Ok...first, be glad for the posts that talk about the negatives. When I was doing my research, nobody was talking about these things so I went into surgery with a whole different perspective. Knowing then what I know now...I might (stressing might) have made a different decision but at least I would have had the full story. I read an article (I swear I need to print these off or bookmark them) that said only 4 out of 10 banders are successful...success being determined as only losing 50% of their excess weight and that's only of the percentage who don't end up losing their band from erosion or other medical complications and I can't remember whether these problems were 60% or 40%...sorry. I had my band out two weeks ago due to chronic phrenic nerve pain. My insurance did not have to give prior approval since it wasn't elective...it was due to a 'complication'. I'd guess most insurance companies work that way. My surgeon wanted to do a revision to the sleeve. I would have had to go through the whole approval process (psych eval mainly) again for that one. My insurance company had no problem in approving the sleeve (I didn't get it by the way) because the band was being removed because of a complication...not because it didn't work. Even then, the surgeon said they know how to word the paperwork so insurance companies will approve. Oh, and according to my surgeon, the band is not considered 'restrictive' but the sleeve is so again perhaps it's just in the wording? You can read about the experiences of others...good and bad...but it still won't tell you how you'll do. Ask yourself this...if you don't get the band, then what will you do? Yes, there's a risk you'll be one of those who fail at the band *or* are failed by the band (and it happens more than the manufacturers would like to admit)...but you could also be one of those who are successful. Personally, I wouldn't give up without trying. .

    Pouch reset?

Echoing the "reset isn't real", and definitely co-signing on the calories. Here's a link to calorie calculators for loss and maintenance - pop in your stats and it gives you calorie guides. Super easy. Weight loss absolutely slows to a crawl as you reach goal, but staying in a deficit works, even if it's slow. I also wanted a "buffer" for the 3-year gain-back scenario, and I'm now ten kilos past my goal, which was what I was after. This whole process is just ongoing calorie adjustment and patience.
  6. You couldn't have said it better. The fact that I'm not losing is making me fall into bad habits again and just losing hope in myself. I've been overweight ever since I was a child so yes the compliments on the weight loss is nice, however, I'm not nearly where I want or need to be. Wearing a size 6/8 has never been in the picture for me and even with the weight I've loss this far, I can't see me getting any smaller, especially after this stall. It's extremely frustrating. I don't know wht to do. Standing weight right now is betwwn 238 and 240

    Day Before Pre-Op Visit

I have my pre-op tomorrow with Dr. McKee. I started this process in December by going to a support group meeting. I attended an informational seminar in January and was approved at the end of April. If all goes well, I should be scheduled for surgery within the next 2-3 weeks. Wish me luck. Weight Before Surgery: 260 lbs.

    From There to Here

I've been thinking about Weight Loss Surgery for a long time, but could not seriously pursue it until my husband concurred, which was last fall. We attended an informational seminar in Palm Springs CA over the winter and began looking for a surgeon then. We were in CA for the winter, but moving to WA state at the end of April. My medical insurance is Medicare/Tricare for Life, so I had to use a "Center of Excellence". I was able to make an appointment with Dr. Jeffrey Hunter at Virginia Mason Clinic in Federal Way WA. We met with him on May 3, 2007 and he thoroughly discussed the pros and cons of both bypass and lapband surgery. He told me that he would want me to lose 10% of my body weight prior to surgery. I weighed in at 325 that day. I started a 1000-1200 calorie diet the next day. I lost about 2 lb. a week for the first three weeks. Then the weight loss stalled and so did my enthusiasm. In a short time, I had regained the 7 lb. I was supposed to have a second appointment with Dr. Hunter in early June, but his nurse, Stephen called me early that week and told me that I didn't need to come in until I'd lost the weight. So the next day I started on a 350-500 calorie diet. Its been three weeks and I've now lost 20 lb. Last week, after several phone calls to report my weight loss thus far, Stephen called me back with a surgery date of July 20. I will have to go in about 10 days prior to that for pre-op appointments with Dr. Hunter, the dietician and the anesthesia department. :ranger:

March 2015 Sleevers...How are you? Poll

hi!! I too am a Marche. Surgery Weight: 330 Current Weight: 291 Concerns: I still cannot understand my crazy breathe. I know its the keytones but others in my support group do not have this problem. And I am getting heartburn again - oh well. Prilosec here I come again. My first period was really BAD - wishing next month is not too bad. And I am really sad - when I go to restaurants. I really miss eating food but I am getting better with this. Joys: All my clothes are too big. Love it!! Have not gone shopping yet but will soon. Exercise: Pilates every morning - trainer on Saturday. Mob-Friday every night - elliptical or bike for 40 min. Getting faster each week at the gym. Weekedn - try for a 2-5 mile walk or hike.
  11. My surgeons plan has me going from 800 calories a day to 1200 calories a day at six months. First. .. how am I supposed to eat 1 1/2 times more than I'm eating now? Most days I struggle to get in the 800 calories. Second. .. 1200 calories sound closer to maintenance to me. Will I still lose weight eating this many calories this soon out? I don't know what to do.

    Scale Shopping

Do not spend a lot of moeny on a scale. Once you weight on a scale then any weight loss should be fairly accurate. Also just to be make you aware your scale can become your enemy after weight loss surgery. If you weight daily and are expecting a weight loss everytime that you get on the scale it is very easy to get discouraged. I have gone to weight bi-weekly. This way if I do not lost much in a few days or 1 week I do not get down on myself and start to eat things to make me feel better......like i used to do in the past.
  13. My step mom had this done about 35 years ago due to stomach ulcers. I don't think it is as small as we are all getting, but a sleeve. She did not NEED to lose weight, but did and has kept it off all these years. Never any problems that I know of, she is 83 yrs old.
  14. I wanted to share some of my fears with revision surgery. I am only two weeeks away from my operation and I am starting to get nervous about my life afterwards. I figured I could share my fears along with others and hopefully get some support as well. So here goes. These are my top fears about revision surgery: I wont lose any weight or hardly any. I wont be able to follow doctor orders and may cause myself complications. I will come out of surgery only to find they couldn't do it after all. I will not feel as much restriction as I did with the band. I will only lose weight for a short time like with the band, and then start gaining it all back I have more fears but these are the most prominent. I guess this whole journey with the band has just scarred me in some ways and made me doubt the power of surgery, even though I know from seeing my friends and family who have done it that it works. I guess I worry since I chose the band first, things wont be the same for me and it wont work as well. Share your fears with me.

    Loving my sleeve!

Let me say ... it only gets better. Wait til you get frustrated because clothes don't fit. Wait til all of your friends start making comments about how much weight you have lost. It's coming. Be ready for it. Congrats on getting the sleeve. I am certain you will be happy with the decision you made. Welcome to the club.

    Seriously....

I know that I didn't put the weight on over night...I guess I just thought that I would see more progress at this point.

    Advice that makes you crazy.

The people who offer such insightful weight loss advise to my obesity (and only short term success with dieting): "You can just lose weight if all you did was eat less and exercise." Thank you Captain Obvious. I can also fly if I just grew a pair of wings or win Powerball if I only picked the winning numbers. Let me know if Sears is having a sale on wood chippers this week.

    Gym Routine Exercise

Cardio and weight training are a perfect combo but they don't have much impact on skin. They do make you look awesome in clothes though! To the OP, I did strength training 3 days a week and cardio 2 (jogging ) days a week the first year. Now I still do the weights 3 days a week but mix it up the other days with yoga, bootcamp, etc.

    Gym Routine Exercise

I don't do a lot of weight training, but I do a lot of running and cross training. So I will run 3-4 days/week, then on the other days I do some form of cross training. Anything from a group exercise class to the elliptical or stationary bike, etc. The cross training helps with endurance and flexibility which in turn helps my running. :-) With all that said, my biggest recommendation is just find something you LOVE. I don't think it matters as much what it is, as much as it matters that you find something that you enjoy that you can commit to.
  20. I'm just over a year out from sleeve surgery, I can't begin to describe the feeling. I'm down to 168lbs and for the first time in my life I have normal BMI, I have never been one to go by what the scale says, it's always been about how I feel both health and look wise, no longer need the cpap machine! went from a size 40/42 waist to a 32 and xxl shirts to large. Some people I haven't seen in a while don't even recognize me at first, I workout daily and feel healthier then when I was a teen / young adult. I still enjoy food, in fact I think I enjoy it more since I take my time and try to make health fresh choices, and yes I still eat some junk from time to time usually just a couple of bites, but I don't get hung up on it (I'm still human). All in all this was the one of the best decisions I have made. I Wish everyone success on their weight loss journey.

    What was I Thinking?

Unfortunately until someone experiences having this done, they won't know exactly what this feels like or how difficult it really is to lose the amount of weight we have to lose. I promise you that over the next 7 days you will start to feel better. Moving around does help a lot. Our bodies heal at different paces but you should be doing better soon. I still can't say that I would do it over again, but every day I am better with the changes, the more I am get closer to that day when I will say, absolutely...would do it over again. My problem is that I have lost over 75 pounds the conventional way at least 15 times but then gained it back when I started eating again. So until I get to 100 pounds down, I really can't say it's worth it. But it will and I will and then we can celebrate our healthiness.
  22. Thank you for the input. I actually did have the surgery on 4/9. I have my first follow up today. I'm feeling pretty good, just a bit tired. I think that may be from the lack of nutrition. I'm getting my protein and water in so I feel like I am doing pretty well. I will see how the weight loss goes and then tackle my hip. Have a great day!

    Holiday Goodies At Work

I can totally relate to that! A co-worker brought me a dozen beautiful and very yummy Cookies today. They are gone. Sweets go down so easy for me. Going forward....... I am NOT going to eat anymore treats!!! I am going to get back on track so that I do not continue to gain over the Christmas holiday. WLS is by no means the easy way out. We still have to work very hard to lose and maintain our weight. I do NOT want to be that fat person again!!!
  24. Which surgery are you having? Glad you passed the psych eval... I am one of them shrink types and felt like I had fooled them, too! About the doubt... normal for most of us. For me, after decades of failure, it is unreal to even contemplate that I could lose this weight. But, I did. Now that the rapid loss period is over for me, I am facing the reality of having to be very careful. But, the good news is that my pouch is small, I literally can't overeat. The bypass part of the surgery is there always, helping cut nutrient absorbing, and honestly, it is easier to avoid weight gain and with careful eating and good activity, the pounds are still coming off. I still am shocked when I look in the mirror or see myself in a window reflection... but I deserve this new body.

Feeling Unqualified or Ill-Prepared for Surgery

People mean well - it's just hard to see that designation on certain browsers. I felt the same way as the OP and really can't hardly believe it even as the weight is coming off. I think you're completely normal!
