PCP is sabotaging my insurance approval

Yes! I did this before starting with anything because I wanted ALL of my medical records just in case. I called my ins., saw my surgeon's NUT, went to my surgeon's seminar, AND saw my surgeon ALL before visiting my PCP (I had to wait 6 months anyway to be approved so I had time on my side) but when I did finally talk to my PCP, I was pleasantly surprised that he was supportive. I had previously asked about bypass and he had sort of steered me away from it (giving me thumbs up to try South Beach, and Meridia, and eventually a card for a place that sold medifast-like supplements) so I was thinking he might not be on board. When I did see him I had taken ALL of my medical records and made a chart of my weights over the last 10 years (he's been my dr. at least that long!) I wrote down every single diet I had ever tried (with lots being recommended by him) and the results of those diets, how much I lost, how much I regained and how much I spent. What I realized during the whole process is that he just didn't want to be the one to suggest surgery. Faced with the overwhelming report that diets had indeed NOT worked for me, he was 100% on board. Good luck, time to take charge and get the paperwork you need and deserve to have!
  2. Hello! ( I'm placing this in different forums because I'm so new and I have no idea where is a good place for my question, apologies!) I'm so incredibly new to this so hopefully I'm placing this in the correct area! Anyway, I am 17 and severely overweight. I recently decided I wanted to peruse surgery. My mother is supportive, my brother wants to do it with me, and my grandmother (whom opinion mattered the most) thought it was a great idea. I am a in the 400 (yikes) and feel like I genuinely have no future for myself if I don't lose the weight. I want to go off to college and I want to be someone and I feel as if this weight is holding me back. I recently called to attend a seminar and a meeting with my pcp on oct 24th. I'm worried; it takes 6 months plus a wholeee bunch of tests. I never really kept up with a pcp, I was a very introverted child and pushed doctors away because I didn't want to accept my weight. So I have absolutely NO history of tracked diets. (I did them but never kept up or have evidence of them). So I guess my questions are; Do you think it will actually take 6 months? Will I need to track my diets with a pcp? Having my age AND WEIGHT in consideration is this a good idea? (If i fail the diets can they not let me have surgery?) Can they decide surgery isn't for me after 6 months? Sleeve or bypass I really want the surgery so I'm at a loss Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    January sleevers ! Veterans ?!

When I was about 8 months out, my appetite returned and my weight loss slowed. The losing phase is not so much a veterans issue, but most of us have been through it. Here is what worked for me - going back to the basics -protein & veggies -water -no snacking -exercise -really low carbs - total, not net -eliminate Protein Bars and other food that i tended to "abuse" Eating that way helps curb hunger and definately keeps losses on track.

    insurance

My PS had to submit as well & as far as I know, for any surgery the surgeon needs to be the one submitting. However, info from your bariatric dr will be helpful to your PS to get approval. You will need to show weight loss & how long you have kept the weight loss, which is best shown by your bariatric dr that followed you close since surgery. As far as I know, lipo would not be covered by any insurance, bcuz insurance will only pay for what is "medically necessary" ..... I was approved for breast reduction/lift and the panniculectomy (tummy skin removal). Your PS may or may not charge you extra for the "tuck" part of the TT (which is the muscle repair, buck muscle repair is not really medically necessary). I had my port changed to a low profile port at the time of my TT & BR/BL & didn't have to pay for the "tuck" part. Submit for everything you want & see what is approved.....all they can say is no! Good luck!

Do you lose weight when they do the surgery
  6. Can't believe I have lost 60 pounds ! I am 4 1/2 months postop..., starting weight of 254, today at 194! I am now in the smallest clothes I had held onto from about 8 years ago, and really need to do some shopping as the styles are definitely dated, but I don't want to buy any until it's a smaller size! I had the lap band initially in 2007, and it never seemed to work right- think I lost 30 pounds total and was always getting "stuck" before it finally "slipped" in 2011 and was removed. The sleeve is far superior in every way, and I could not be happier!! Another big difference this time is this message board- it is so full of encouragement, so full of good information, and has kept me motivated and on the right path!! Thanks so much!! Also, I am devoted and faithful to myfitness pal - and I believe it has also been pivotal in my success and encourage anyone to try it!! You can also friend me DocAngTx12 !!

    Day Before Surgery

Today is my last day of "freedom" and eating like a pig. Last night me and a friend went out for a last meal. I ate the biggest steak i could. I was going to drink some cocktails but then just was not up to it. I'm scared the band will not go onto me and its a failure. I am scared i never wake up from the operation. I have even had astma attacks today. I am ready for this change, i am willing to do it, i want to do it, its the right time etc Tomorrow morning at 6.30 i will book into the hospital and start my new day my new life and hopefully my new me. I will be able to actually keep down every kilo i do loose not pick it up plus another 10kg as after every diet. I weighed myself this morning i was 142.1 i've already lost weight in the last week yet it feels like i am eating more than ever. No matter what i eat, tarts, ice cream it just does not satisfy me. it does not make me happy, there is no pleasure. I have so much support from friends and family and my bosses, but now im wondering maybe i have put to much pressure on myself now because everyone will be watching me. Maybe thats a good thing maybe thats a bad thing. I wish it could just be over and out. Done and dusted so I can go home and start doing what i have to.

    Underage (17) and bariatric?

Congrats at making the choice to improve your way of life. I actually know someone that had the surgery at 12 bcuz she was close to the 400's. She is has maintained a healthy weight since. I fully understand not wanting to wait the 6 months. I was feeling the same way. I've done diets and worked out and lost a lot of weihht. But what I found out on this 6 month journey is that I've been learning new things I didn't know before. I think the 6 months is needed so that you can learn all the healthy eating habits and life style changes you will need. Just push your self to do everything you need to get it done. I wish I had the courage to make the choice you are a long time ago. I just finished the apts I am waiting for my final apt before the surgery. I will be more than happy to answer any of your questions. And we can exchange ideas. Good luck on your journey you got this.
  10. This is going to sound strange but are you drinking enough water? I had some pre-surgery edema in my ankles which subsided when I upped my fluid intake. My doctor said that due to my excess weight, I needed to drink more water. She said sometimes not drinking enough can cause overweight bodies to hold on to water. Perhaps you want to have a discussion with your doctor?
  11. Since you are at the beginning of this process, I would recommend three things. 1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success. 2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery. 3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.
  12. I can't help much with the hair loss, but with regards to your weight loss, did I misunderstand what you wrote in one or two of your prior posts, and I am going by memory now....your start weight was 202lb, you lost 14lb pre surgery? In about nine weeks you have lost 16lbs...so if my memory is mostly correct you have lost about 15% of your start weight and about 9% of your surgery day weight. I know you don't see it but you've been doing pretty good and being older, shorter and at a lower weight you aren't going to lose big chunks of weight.
  13. My goal weight was set by my surgeon - she wants my BMI to be at 25.

    Question

Okay, I just got the lapband may 23 and I am trying to excersize and stretch more but ever since I was a kid and I bend over or try to touch my toes or even lean forward my sternum tightens up so bad. I have to raise my hands above my head and stretch upward as high as I can just to get it to stop. I dont think its weight related because even when I was thin it happend. Is their anything I can do to pervent this and does this happen to others? Im not sure if theirs somthing I can do the strengthen the area or what. Any advice is greatly appreciated
  15. Hi everyone, Was banded yesterday, Tuesday, June the 9th. I must say I was in some pain yesterday. Mostly from the gas that settled in my lower neck and across my shoulders and the site where the port is, is tender. I am going to try to post a picture of me from this morning. I was going to get a pre-op picture but forgot. So we will start from day 1 post op. Since January 21st., 2009 I have lost 16 pounds!! I know that is not a whole bunch but I am looking at them as 16 pounds that I will not gain back!!!! Thank you all for this GREAT support group!!!
  16. Yesterday I found out that I’m Pregnant and to be honest I am scared to death! Scared that I will gain back all the weight I’ve worked so hard to get off and I’m scared I won’t be able to eat enough food to be healthy for the baby and I’m scared I'll make my stomach big again trying! There are so many worries going through my head. What do I need to try to eat more of? What Vitamins do I need to take since I already take some for my stomach? What should I tell my dr? Do I need to see a special dr? I’m so confused!!! I was not planning for this baby in anyway nor am I ready for it but he or she is coming so I better get ready fast!! Any Advice would be such a blessing! PS I also posted in the pregnant area but I know not alot of people read there..

    Anthem Blue Cross Ppo?

I have Anthem BCBS under the Kroger national plan. From orientation to surgery, the wait was about two months. Approval took two weeks. I was not required to do any supervised diet. I had to submit a list of what diets (ie Weight Watchers) I had done, the year done, and approx weight loss (the last two were more estimates). I did have to be above 40 bmi without comorbidities or above 35 bmi with 2+ comorbidities.

    Jeans?

Seriously? A fake booty? Never thought about that! I live in Texas, if I get a fake booty I'll prob just wear it for special occasions....I am just imagining how hot my butt would get. I think when I've lost all my weigh I'll get a padded butt! I still have 40-50 pounds to lose. I can't imagine what my butt will look like...or won't look like...when I've lost my weight. Yikes! Thanks to everyone for your advice! I'm going to try leggings w a long shirt, great idea!!!
  19. I've got a fill scheduled tomorrow, I can eat about a cup to cup and a half. It depends what and when - I cant eat a full cup of breakfast cereal but I can eat a cup and a half of dinner. In and of itself, this is no problem, I mean a cup and a half meal made up of a lean Protein and steamed vegies is hardly unhealthy or fattening. But its the appetite that comes along with it - I find if I can eat this much I'm also getting hungry quickly and, not feeling satisfied, heading towards sweet carb foods again. I'm not losing or gaining so I no longer guage it by weight loss but I can foresee gaining a couple of pounds if I keep eating as much as I am at the moment.

    My Alli

See you can meet with your nutritionist. She put me on a modified low glycemic food plan to break a plateau and I had a 9 pound weight loss the month after. I tried so many diet drugs in the past, that I am very hesitant to try any of them anymore.
  21. Thread hijack-------- Just wanted to say first of all Ellen, you are so well spoken and articulate, as well as level headed for a 21 year old, I know you will do wonderfully! And also I am sooooo thrilled to see young people like you and Jodi taking charge at your age. To be able to go through my younger years, and the younger years of my kids at a normal weight would have been so much easier. It was stressful being obese as we all know, and with kids in school, the stress increases. Of course I combatted the stress with chips and dip----but that is beside the point! I love seeing young people deciding to live their lives---and doing what it takes to do that NOW! Your health will be so much better! Congrats to you both! Back to topic! Kat

    Zumba Fitness And Step Aerobics

I'm in the same boat. I work out 5 days a week with cardio and weights. Wondering how long it will be before I can go back to my normal workout. I don't want to lose the muscle I have gained!
  24. Hi there! I've actually been at this weight for over a year now. I bounce up and down a few pounds here and there. I suppose I could change my ticker, but that seems blasphemous somehow. I consider myself at goal. Woohoo!
