from lap band to sleeve
LilMissDiva Irene replied to lara's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi lara, welcome to the site!! I am a revision from band to sleeve. Best thing I've ever done for myself!! I had trouble with the whole insurance thing, and since I had gained back all of the weight I'd lost post band I didn't want to waste anymore time fighting it. I did self pay with Dr. Aceves on Sept. 15th. Again, BEST THING EVER! I didn't have much issue - my recovery wasn't that bad. I think I struggled more with fatigue than anything else. I think I still deal with that to an extent, but it's nothing as bad as it was for the first month. However, the results of the sleeve are pretty darn amazing. It has been for me everything that the band was promised, but never was. Good luck with your revision! Let us know how you're doing. -

Anyone go home same day as surgery?
TexasT replied to TexasT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still have my band, so he will remove it when he does the sleeve and gall bladder removal. I'm not sure the total number of sleeves he's done, but he's done around 216 since the first of 2007, with 223 band to sleeve revisions. He still does more gastric bypass surgeries, as that's what most insurance co.'s will pay for. He's done 1787 of them and 817 lap bands. He's also a general surgeon, so he's done thousands of gall bladder removals, appendectomies, etc. -
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do some serious research on the lapband. There are soooo many problems and many people end up revising to the Sleeve or RNY anyway. I had the lapband for 2 years until it slipped and I had to have it removed. So now after I have regained all my weight I am trying to get revised to a sleeve. I wish I would have read more before I decided on the lapband....and not just believed all the hype! Good Luck with whatever you decide!

Waiting for insurance approval
Steph1236 replied to Steph1236's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just called my insurance yesterday and they had no record of a revision request from my doctor. The doctors office said they would send the request again (thanks for letting them know). So now, the approval that I thought would only take a week, will be even longer. With my band (same insurance) approval took 1 month. I'm wondering I will have to wait that long for revision approval? How long did anyone elses approval take? -
I had my psych evaluation and nutrition appointment today. Now, my doctor's office will submit the revision request to my insurance. I'm hoping because my band has siipped twice that insurance will approve quickly. I could be sleeved as early as August (as long as there is not much damage after he takes the band out). I'm worried because I didn't do will with the band that I wont do well with the sleeve. It was nice to hear the psychologist say that I wasn't a faliure with the band, that the band failed to work for me. I keep thinking that maybe if I didn't throw up as often as I did that the band wouldn't have slipped. I was throwing up because the food (protien) wouldn't go down. I can't wait to be able to eat healthy foods without the fear of them coming back up.

I went in today & was told my band slipped... AGAIN (second time in 3.5 yrs). I'm tired of messing with this... Fills, deflates & surgical repairs. They deflated it completely & want me to have surgery asap to repair. Thinking of just revising it to a gastric sleeve instead. Anyone else have a suggestion or opinion on a revision? I meet w the surgeon next week so am doing some research. I'm down 57 lbs, and am afraid of gaining back if left untreated. Thanks in advance

I too am 5 yrs out. I've had my band revised in 9/2011. I've gained back 50lbs since all my problems in the last 2yrs. It sucks. I don't have good restriction still. I have 7.4 cc. VERY FRUSTRATING. It's also frustrating to hear from my doc that they are finding that 4-5yrs out is when they (not just my doc) are finding people have issues. :-(

Those who have had mini bypass
CaliCozyWozy replied to soccermom2's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had the mini bypass on Feb 23 in Mexico and am down 28 pounds as of today I went from the Lap Band and the scar tissue from the revision is the only pain I felt-- I have had very little gas and not acid reflux at all -- $7200 is what I paid but so worth it -- in the states for the same surgery they wanted $14000 -
I was banded in 2011 and around 6 months ago I started having comp!ications with acid coming up in my throat, I had a endoscope done in December and band was eroding into my stomach and I had a ulcerated esophagus, The doc removed the fluid and I had a revision done on Feb 17,2014. I was surprised to find out my band was wrapped around my heart and I wonder what would have happened to me and if I would have had more damage if I had waited any longer. My heart was bruised but no complications. I now have R N Y bypass. I lost 80 pounds with the band and was happy at first.

Need help with food not remaining in my stomach.
astarwalker posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
HI everyone. I had my Lapband to mini gastric bypass revision on July 5th. So far I am feeling fine with my weight loss of 23 pounds so far, considering it is a revision. And my age of 61 both me and my nutritionist and doc think it is pretty good. My problem is that I am throwing up a lot. Almost after every meal, specially if it has meat in it. I really try to chew slowly and a lot, stop after 3-4 spoons and choose my food very carefully, and still it happens. On rare occasions it stays in. I am worried! Also having great difficulty drinking all the liquids recommended... What does go down really well is natural coconut water, which I drink a lot of. As food. One egg goes down well, whole wheat crispies also ( I am allowed 2-3 a day of the real light crispies, usually have one at breakfast ) and I usually eat them with cottage or egg or my homemade tunfish spread. All of the above goes down well and also stay. However, chicken, hamburger meat, or chicken liver, ground meat, that goes down with difficulty and comes out in no time at all. I am worried!! Anyone with the same.e problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Lost, Stressed, :(
Fair2bslimLady replied to Fair2bslimLady's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi dooter thanks for the feed back but I also found out that the sleeve does change overtime and it depends on the person. "Stretching of the stomach often results in additional problems other than inadequate weight loss or weight regain. The tube of the stomach may stretch in a manner that is not uniform, resulting in portions of the stomach tube being larger than others. This can cause the stomach to become shaped like an hourglass, where both the upstream and downstream portions of the stomach are large, but they are separated by a portion of the stomach that is fairly narrow. While eating may not increase as a result of a stretched stomach tube, it may cause uncomfortable and/or disordered eating. Depending on the volume of food a patient consumes at each meal and the symptoms they have, there are a couple of revision options that all result in food flowing more directly through the stomach." Anyone have a sleeve fail and did bypass? HELP
peacheeie posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all!! Ok, Short, sweet and to the point, I had a band for 7 years, no problems until port needed to be revised. Band removed (much to my surprise)! After band was removed, I gained 50 lbs!! sleeve surgery in January....I have felt HARDLY ANY restriction and kept remembering right before I went in for the sleeve, I looked at the surgeon and said "a banana sized stomach"? he looked at me and said "yes, and if you need another band in the future we can do that"....this is when I was being wheeled into surgery! This comment has been on my mind for 3 months and the fact that I really feel no restriction has really had me wondering so I went to another surgeon with my reports, tests, etc. told me in his opinion, my stomach is larger than normal and that's most likely why I have not felt restriction. I have to go for an endoscopy to look at the scar tissue...depending on the results, he may be able to make my sleeve smaller OR if there is too much scar tissue, he may have to do a bypass. I'm really freaked out by this news and I truly do not want to go through this again plus, insurance will not likely pay for another surgery. I honestly am just researching bypass now since it could be an option for me. The surgeon today did not in any way bash or put down my doctor that did the sleeve, in fact, he said it looked good! And, he said that the scar tissue could have been why my stomach was left larger. I forgot to mention that since January 9th, I have lost about 20 lbs...that's it! I'm exercising, drinking my water, doing my protein and just started eating normal food...if that's what you call it! I'm just looking for some advice, words of wisdom from anyone who has been in my shoes. Thanks so much Dee -
Undecided...looking at lap band vs gastric sleeve
mswisdom replied to Susanparvin's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm a sleever and as I read your question I noticed that you said that this is the last year that your insurance covers wls. You may need to ask them will they cover the visits of maintainance of your band, it may turn out that once the rudder is removed you won't be covered for your 'fills' and adjustments. I myself never thought about the band and surgeons in my area are starting to explain that they are having to do more revisions or removals. I couldn't see myself with the port sticking out of my body, or the fact that I would have to continue to see the doctor for maintainance, I'm like "Cut it out and throw it away". But like others said, do you're research. You are the only one that knows what's right for you. Good luck on your journey! -
Undecided...looking at lap band vs gastric sleeve
slikchik10 replied to Susanparvin's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As a person that was revised FROM a band TO a sleeve, I would suggest you check out BOTH the sleeve forums and band forums for information. Also, there is a section in the sleeve forums that those of us that have gone through the revision process post discussions about our journey of change. Each of these areas have people with veterans (long time experience) as well as folks that are fitting your physical description and concerns. Do a search in each of these areas and you'll find previous posts discussing things. I hope this helps. Good luck making your decision. I'm guessing you have guessed what advice I would give.... -
What have you tried so far? My suggestion would be calorie counting, there are lots of apps which will calculate your daily calorie allowance for weight loss, you could track for two or three months see how you go. If you don't fancy calorie counting maybe check in with a dietician. Other than that there is weight loss revision surgery once you've given some of the options a go, if you are inclined towards a revision.

Gastric Bypass or Lap Band - can't decide
princess_n_thep replied to Bella's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I definitely think the band is the safer surgery and you do lose the weight much more slowly and healthily. However, I don't think the band is the "life long" surgery it was told it was to me. And is definitely a lot more work personally. So many people need corrections, revisions and work that it requires more surgeries. One of my main issues is that I only wanted to have ONE surgery. And I am possibly looking at more now if I were to erode, slip, port replacement, etc... I didn't really get told that was a large possibility. Even Inamed says that it is not a lifetime surgery and the chances are high for additional surgeries needed with the band. Had I known that, I don't know if I would have gotten the band. If I had to do it all over again, I would just take the plunge into RNY rather than the band. But I have my band now, so I am trying to not worry about "what if's" and just deal with it while I have it. But I do feel that it isn't a case of IF I lose the band, but WHEN. Both my sister and mother have RNY bypass. They do look great and have lost A LOT of weight and are maintaining (sister for about 6 years, mom for about 3). They don't struggle too much with their diet as they are now in a routine. The dumping or vomiting is very minimal. And it is usually when they eat something that they didn't know what was in it or it was a funky type of food that just didn't agree with them. Neither of them have any other issues that make life unbearable. I ask my mom if she would do it again or would she try my lap band first, and she would go the RNY route. She likes that it is forever and that it is permanant. She said that I can eat "around" my band and "pack" my pouch and she would have done that, therefore not being successful at the surgery. Good luck with your choices! -
Thanks, Marci. I hope you find a way to get your revision soon!

I have the same issue. I'm getting revision surgery on 5/21 and I'm worried about the same things.

Medicare Will Not Pay/support The Sleeve
shangefan replied to sdb1147's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As a person revising from lap band to the sleeve, I wouldn't necessarily recommend the lap band. It seems as though some people have great success (and I did for 18 months) but it is slow and the long-term failure rate is pretty high. That said, I am certain you will consider all of the factors and make the right decision for you, even if it is lapband. -
What Should I Ask My Dr?
Wheetsin replied to Gene1970's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are using the same surgeon I did. I've actually had 4 surgeries with him between 2006 and now, so if you have any questions I can help with, please feel free to ask. I was a revision (from lap-band) so my questions were mainly around the specifics of revision, rather than generic sleeve questions. I did ask him things like: Bougie size (tailored or standard) Process of checking for leaks (his is not standard, but I like it) What complications he would expect due to... (in this case a revision, but it could be anything) During the info seminar, I was told a few things and I didn't know if they were accurate or not (I'd been told them for previous surgeries too, and they never happened, so I wanted to know if they really would or not). Things like catheters, drains, etc. His personal sleeve stats compared to other potential revision surgeries. What the long-term follow-up plan looked like (comprehensively - for him as well as Dr. Sabapathy, Tim, etc.) I knew a lot going in - I'd been looking (lightly, but still) at the sleeve as a revision option for years, knowing I'd probably need something different one of these days. I also already knew a lot about his surgical procedure, aftercare, "how things work," etc. from being a repeat customer. -
3 months post op and everything I swallow makes me feel like I have heart burn.
vikingbeast replied to Autumnrayne's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Reflux happens to many people after the sleeve. I get it if I eat too quickly or if I wait too long between times eating. Call your surgeon. There are stronger medications you can take. Some people do have a revision to gastric bypass to resolve it but usually only after medication can’t resolve it.
