    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Only 4 days post op but feel confident to say that the prep week was harder than the surgery! I was hungry all the time with zero energy. Try to stict as close to the prep diet as possible as it really does make your surgery shorter, with fewer complications and less residual pain. Mostly because the more you shrink your liver, the better off all those things are. Heard that from Bari and Hysterectomy surgeon. If you slip (which I did 2 times) in that week. I had 1 or 2 bites and followed it up with lots and lots of water. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. my clinic had us take them for a year (both the RNY and VSG patients), but that was seven years ago, before the not-so-great news came out about PPIs. I think most surgeons (including my clinic) have people on them for 3-6 months now. You're much more likely to develop post-surgery GERD with VSG than you are RNY. About 30% of VSG patients have GERD issues after surgery (some of whom never had it before surgery), whereas RNY often improves if not outright cures GERD. That's the main reason that patients who had reflux issues prior to surgery are often told to consider RNY. I had some reflux issues before surgery, so my surgeon suggested I at least *consider* RNY, although he said he'd do either surgery. Some people are willing to take the risk because 70% of people do NOT have reflux issues after VSG, but I wasn't willing to take the risk.

    Gastric sleeve

I am sorry you are feeling so regretful about your surgery. I wonder how much of your despair comes from your medical team not fully informing you of what to expect as you progress through the process coupled with dealing with your inability to turn to the food that used to offer you comfort & working through the issues you are dealing with in regards your health. @sleevemealone suggested, a therapist may be very helpful. Ask your medical team for a referral to one who specialises in eating disorders & bariatric patients. There are many people on this forum who have benefitted from the support of a therapist. As you progress, you will be able to eat more food (portion size will increase until by maintenance you are eating about recommended serving sizes) & a broader range of foods. Many still eat some of their old favourite foods - just not as often & in smaller portions. Having a sleeve does not limit your social life at all. I went to a 60th birthday party two weeks after surgery. Sure I didn’t eat or drink any of what was provided (I took my own drink) but I still had a great time being with friends. I go out to dinner often. I socialise with friends & family often & did from pretty early out. I just make better food choices than I used to before my surgery. I have weekends away with girlfriends & family. My sleeve doesn’t stop me living my life. It helps me live it better because I’m fitter, physically & emotionally healthier & happier. I wish you all the best.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am right there with you! Originally scheduled for 1/20, but postponed due to covid patients. I just found out on Friday that I am scheduled for 3/1. During the 4 weeks of not knowing what was going on, I was ready to throw in the towel. Thankfully I have maintained my weight. but need to restart the liver shrink diet ASAP!

    Work Accommodations

Better to have a chat with your supervisors (they don’t have to know the details of your surgery) that you may need some accommodation than not. We all heal & recover differently. Some people are fine after a week. Me, I was weak & could be doughy in the head 4 weeks later (my BP was very low). I undertook a new contract, fortunately with people I worked with before, & they were very accommodating. They allowed me to adjust my working hours & were ok if I had to leave a little earlier. I could eat/drink at my desk so that was never an issue & nor were bathroom breaks. Maybe ask if you could start back with reduced hours or a reduced working week to begin if you discover you need it. Also ensure they know you can’t lift anything heavy for a couple of weeks either & bending & reaching may be difficult for a little while. Again all this depends on how you recover. All the best.

    Periods (women only please)

I was told the pill was much less effective (not always absorbed fully after surgery) and coupled with the flood of estrogen, fertility is amped up. OB/GYN recommend condoms or IUD. I just had VSG last week so I’m still learning the ropes. I hope that’s helpful!
  7. Besides different hungry signals many get different full signals. Some people say a runny nose is an indicator they are full now. Or they sneeze. Wow that is a huge amount of fluid. With 1200ml from your shakes, soups, etc. plus two to three litres of fluid you’re drinking 3-4 litres a day. You must feel so bloated & be peeing constantly. Generally we’re advised all fluids count to our 2L daily goal regardless of whether it’s from combinations of water, tea, shakes, soup, etc. I wouldn’t be concerned about stretching your tummy but maybe putting stress/pressure on your healing tummy. Worth a chat with your dietician & surgeon. But then there are many different plans out there & a lot are adjusted to suit the individual & their needs. All the best.

    Initial weight vs current weight

So true, I have not been here on the site for awhile but you have to be committed! That is not always easy...I went from 260 lbs to 155 lbs at my lowest weight. Than for 3 yrs at 164 to 165 then 169 and now 171. Food still tastes good, even though I do not get hunger. They should take your taste buds or some of them. LOL just kidding! I do understand the folks here that regain weight because food does taste good and it is easy to take a few bites too many or go back to old habits. Athough the pain and dumping syndrome are not worth it. Just being honest. My observation go for RNY or as I had Bilopantriac bypass are probably best for long term as I have some family members and friends who gained their weight back quickly by having the sleeve, but it is really about you...whatever you choose you have to be committed. I did not have a choice as I had kidney disease and this operation saved my life and I am scared to death to regain weight but I am committed. Why take 6 months of your life getting ready for the surgery and then go back to the old ways and regain the weight. Not to sound self righteous as I said but be committed! Good Luck to all!

2 weeks post op - not feeling full

So glad I found this thread, I thought my stomach was broke or still in there 😅 I’m 6 days post op, the dietician advised to have 200ml smoothie, 200ml protein shake, 200ml soup, 200ml protein shake, 200ml yoghurt mixed with milk and another 200ml protein shake per day and 2-3 Litres of water per day, reading your comments I feel like this is way to much but I don’t get a full feeling other than a runny nose. Am I broken or has my pouch expanded from to much? US version on 200ml is 6.7oz

    Initial weight vs current weight

Sleeved on 2/5/2021 Heaviest Weight: 363 Intake Weight: 358 Surgery Day Weight: 333 Goal Weight: 200 Current Weight: 183 I’m a 5’11 male. 42 years old. I still log every meal, weigh and measure food, workout 4-5 times per week.  I’m averaging 1500-1600 calories a day.

    Initial weight vs current weight

Heavy weight: 396 lbs Intake weight: 375 lbs Surgery weight: 357 lbs Current weight: 276 lbs Goal weight: 240 lbs I'm 6 feet tall and was sleeved September 14, 2021. I am a week short of five months post-op and am still losing around 2 lbs a week on 1800-2000 calories a day. (I am also extremely active, so don't take those calories as written in stone.)

    Gastric sleeve

I'm not sure why you can't go out to eat. I go out to eat, and I'm not even five months out from surgery. I just order what I want and ask the server to bring a to-go box at the same time as the plate. I portion out what I think I'm going to eat and put the rest in the box. Or I just order an appetizer if there's one that looks good to me. I definitely am eating more than 4 oz. of food at a time, and I'm still losing 2-3 lbs. a week. I agree with others that it's probably time for you to look for someone to talk to about your pining for the old days. Because what's done is done. "Stomach stretching" takes years if it happens at all—and there are plenty of WLS veterans on this very board who, three or five or even ten years later, have reduced appetite.
  14. My surgery was 2/3. I was on a clear liquid diet Thursday and Friday. I stayed on it Saturday just because I didn’t feel ready to go back to a regular liquid diet. My instructions were to start vitamins when I started the full liquid diet, so I started yesterday. When the hospital called to check on me today they confirmed that I started my vitamins!
  15. I started week 2 post op. B1 dissolvable, calcium citrate and chewable multi(gross)
  16. I’m 2 weeks post op and am getting board of the liquids. I would kill to get back to 2 shakes and protein and salad!!!!! But I should be moving to phase 3 on Thursday!!!! Hang in there and good luck!!

    Work Accommodations

I stayed at home for three weeks but could have gone back to work after two. I felt fine and wouldn't have needed any accommodations.
  18. I am. I also had RNY surgery on 2/3. I’ll PM you and perhaps we can keep in touch?
  19. This process is a bit daunting. I had RNY surgery 2/3 so it's been 4 days. I am losing weight but am afraid to eat much or anything. My tummy is sore but tolerable. I'm trying to get in my protein via the Premier Protein 30g protein per shake deal but it's less than yummy, tbh. I am walking and expect to return to work on Wednesday (mostly desk job, no lifting). I am trying to learn my "new body's" way of telling me I'm hungry. Anyone else going through this struggle?

    Pre op foods

Yeah it is! It's like different times too. Some people do liquids for a week only I hear. I'm 12 days on two shakes one protein meal a day along with jello, popsicles and broth and then 2 days all liquid before surgery. Tofu is good! But I've also been eating it since I was very young as it's a staple in my family. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    COVID and Sleeve

I was sleeved 9/21/21 and ended up getting COVID a couple of weeks ago. I was fully vaccinated and boosted, and had already lost nearly 70lbs from my highest weight, which I absolutely credit with my mild case and speedy recovery. While sick I had almost no appetite and lived off of protein shakes and soup. I tried to get my fluids in but did not track food or protein or steps or anything else. I rested and medicated. Since then I've bounced back just about 95%. I still have a small cough, but that could also be attributed to cold weather and asthma. It might be helpful to check in with your surgeon/dietician for some guidance if you are struggling with food tolerance/intake.

    Surgeon's advice after vomiting

I appreciate you taking the time to answer. The two weeks of Optifast pre-surgery are an eating disorder waiting to happen. I mean, fluids after, sure, but before? That's just medically mandated anorexia. What next? Learn to make yourself vomit for good measure? And there are unfortunately some poor souls here who go on diets for months. We have the surgery because our bodies fight that process, it's nothing but a way to deny necessary medical treatment to people needing it. Because this disease happens be seen as a moral failure. Imagine they asked people with a fracture in their foot to run on it for a couple months to qualify for surgery. I mean, you can, it will hurt, "but it's good for you to practice what you'll do after surgery when in rehab". And exercise is good right?
