  1. Congrats on your weight loss. Some people can guzzle down liquids others can’t. I can’t. I only experience that pain if I drink too fast or try to swallow too big a mouthful - usually when I’m not thinking about what I’m doing. I can take 2 sips at a time at most & then I have to put my glass down & wait before I have another.

I have moderately severe arthritis in both my knees and was in pain all day, every day before surgery. I’m down 50lbs in 11 weeks and it has made a huge difference in my knee pain and arthritis. I noticed today that I I was able to squat down to pick something up off the floor, which would normally be completely out of the question prior. I can’t imagine how much better I’ll feel once I get to closer to my goal weight! So yes, it makes a difference!

Knee pain causing mobility issues is one of the major reasons I started researching WLS and getting serious about it's possibility. I'm still pre-op, but I can only imagine how much easier it will be carrying less weight. I'm sure if you have other medical issues that weight loss won't be the ultimate cure, but the way I look at it is this: does my knee hurt even more when I'm carrying heavy groceries? Yes. So, if I weighed less, my leg may hurt less. Best of luck!
  4. I just got a voicemail from the surgical coordinator to schedule my surgery, so I'm assuming insurance has approved me! I'm looking at mid-July, and...I know in my head and heart that the sleeve is the right thing and I definitely want to move forward, but am also feeling super anxious about the pre-op diet (I have difficulty choking down protein shakes and get queasy without solid food), and even more so, about the recovery and all the long-term changes ahead of me, as well as the whether or not this will be sustainable over time. It's scary to read of stories of people's hunger coming back and regaining weight after all the effort. I just really want this to work. Any words of wisdom? 😊

Worried, not losing 1 week post op

Can we focus on the original topic at hand which is the weight loss stall? I feel like some people are getting a bit off topic (talking about looking "gaunt") and taking the thread in a different direction than intended.

    Surgery was aborted.

Oh my! How frustrating and disappointing, I know. BUT, and I know you don't necessarily want to hear this but, it's for the best. You wouldn't want some complication pop up because the liver got in the way, ya know? And, while this is not typical, it HAS HAPPENED to many people. They get in there and have to stop for one reason or another. I know you're angry, but I wouldn't let it stop me from going forward if it were me. I'd just try hard to lose the weight they mentioned and go for it again. So sorry but I know if you can do it!!

    Surgery was aborted.

June 9th 2021 was my surgery date. My fiancé and my family were so elated. “You finally get to start you life again”, they said. I was ready to bloody do this! Surgery was supposed to start at 11am and then got pushed back severely due to an emergency the surgeon had to deal with. My surgery didn’t commence until 9:30pm that day. I...was still ready but everyone was anxious and worried the surgeon would be exhausted and what not. Well not 30 minutes after, the surgery was aborted leaving me with six incisions and a pool of tears and anguish. My liver was too big to navigate the surgeon says. I did the pre-op diet. I DID it!!! What f**king gives? Now I did all this for nothing! He tells me lose 20-30 pounds then come back. Oh, it’s that easy, huh? I gotta lose more goddamn weight. Do you know how hard it was to lose the necessary amount to even get this f**king far? In the heat of the moment it just felt insincere of this guy to say such things and just leave me in my pool of tears saying “it was hard for me too”. Haha I don’t doubt that after doing another surgery right after this one for 12 hours straight but it is t about you. This was supposed to be it. Now look at me. 6 incisions, one bleeding out, 6 new ugly scars and nothing to show for any of it but more starvation. More misery. More depressed and sadness. How am I to recover from all this? I don’t want to quit but I’m so tired. I don’t want to do this anymore. I mean no blood tests indicated a fatty liver at all. No abdominal scan was done to indicate that as well. Mom wants me to sue. My finances mom wants me to talk to a malpractice lawyer. I just hate everyone and everything. I’m filled with so much shame. To be honest I know he may have made the right decision but I still hate him for how unsincere it all felt. I am so distraught and I cannot stop crying. I may not have another chance at this for awhile. So much was riding on this. So f**king much. I waited so so long for this second chance.

  9. I actually lost around 70 pre-op but I did over 50 of that on my own before I even met with the surgeon. I think when I met with the surgeon for the first time in late October I had lost around 53 lbs (COVID scared me so that’s what kickstarted me trying to lose weight). I lost close to another 20 after meeting with the surgeon but to be honest 10 of those were on the pre-op diet. I didn’t work as hard at trying to lose weight around the holidays as I wanted to enjoy and had some food funerals (didn’t stuff myself but didn’t restrict as much as I did prior to meeting with the surgeon).

It will depend upon what damage if any you may have to your knees. But certainly reducing the amount of weight you’re carrying will take pressure off them. The balls of my feet used to ache & burn & occasionally my feet would cramp even in flat shoes but now I can dance for hours in heels pain free.

    What was your tipping point?

I don’t have a BMI over 40 and I am “only” 215lbs. That’s a lot of weight for me. Ive had Rheumatoid arthritis since I was 17 (I’m 43 now) and all these medications and up and down depressing anxiety fits made me put on 80lbs. I had tried everything to lose the weight to no avail. Exercise is getting hard for me and last summer I barely could hike up a mountain. I couldn’t breathe and my knees almost gave out. There are so many things I want to do and I never thought WLS was an option because I was told I wasn’t “heavy enough”. But between the RA and my family’s history with obesity I went on a journey that started with helping my anemia first. I got a hysterectomy in March and now I am period free. Next I went to a clinic that does both surgery and medical weight loss. He explained he would do everything he could to help me and ordered tests. He told me that my quality of life and my joints would benefit greatly from WLS. I knew this but still thought I was not eligible as autoimmune disease do not count towards your approval. He ordered a sleep test and it turns out I have sleep apnea which has me getting an excellent shot at approval. I feel humbled and blessed to have this option. So my tipping point was last year and it’s been a slow crawl but I’m here waiting for a surgery date. For the first time in a long time, I am hopeful.

    Dark skin on neck?

That's one of my insecurities also i had it before losing weight now is clearing up
  14. Did anyone have this before losing weight as well? Did it go away as you lost weight or did it stay? It’s one of my biggest insecurities that I know is a direct result of my weight, I hope it is reversible.
  15. I asked a lot of stuff that was pretty much answered in the videos I had to watch (and take tests on) afterwards and in the binder that was sent to me. But these are some of the things I asked (some may seem silly but it was all new to me lol)............. Various types of surgery? Which is best for me? How long does it take? How many days in hospital? How many holes in stomach? Medication after surgery? How many have you performed? Mortality rate? What tests need to be done prior? What makes the surgery work when dieting and exercise never has? Will it fix my PCOS and Insulin Resistance? Does insurance cover all the pre-testing as well as the surgery? Time line of stuff to be done until we get to surgery? What does my Insurance require? Recovery questions: How worried do I need to be about the insides coming undone? Do the staples inside the stomach stay forever or does the stomach sort of mend itself together? OK to get future MRI w/staples (if they remain in the stomach)? How often do I need to worry about getting up and walking as to avoid blood clots? How long after surgery before you can exercise w/bike, swimming, weights, etc.? Hair loss? Will I continue taking my medication as usual? What pain meds, tylenol, etc can I take afterwards? How long after until you can have sex? Post Op What would be my goal weight? I am personally comfortable with ..... (I gave 180). How long will digestion take/how long does it take food to empty from stomach afterwards? What will my stomach capacity be short and long term? Supplements for life? Alcohol use after? Fears Fear of death. Fear of losing too much/looking older. Fear of problems down the road. Right now carbs and sugar stop me from losing weight and whenever I try lose I always know to avoid those foods. Once I have the surgery, will I be able to eat foods that I currently stay away from such as whole wheat, oatmeal, fruits, certain rice, beans, etc. Things that are normally a part of any other persons normal, healthy diet?
  16. Was wondering what everyone that had March 2021 surgeries have lost thus far? I have stayed consistent in weekly loss and just this week found that I gained .9lbs. Currently I am down 52lbs and still want to lose at least 30lbs more. If you don't mind sharing your experience I would appreciate it!

    No Pre Op Diet Ordered?

I didn't. I started out at a BMI of 35, which is rather on the low end of starting points. They don't always ask you to lose weight before if they don't think you're likely to have fatty liver, which they could think because of your starting weight or other bloodwork. For instance, if your triglycerides are low, you're less likely to have fatty liver.
  18. For my 53rd birthday my husband bought me a boudoir session through Susan Page Studios as a reward for losing so much weight. I am looking for a tasteful set of bra and panties in black or maybe a pretty dark blue for the shoot. The problem is the loose skin left in the pubic area. I am currently a 36D or 36DD bra and roughly a size 10 pant. I carried all of my weight in my belly. I am 146 pounds and 5'4" so still have a bit of a stomach roll. They suggest no thongs and something more like cheekies, lacies, hipsters or boy shorts. The shoot is July 22nd so I have a little time. I will bring 5-6 outfits and shoot in 3-4 outfits. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a tasteful bra/panty set that provides a little extra coverage in the nether regions but is still a little sexy. I wouldn't mind a bra that provides a little lift. At this age and with the weight loss the girls can use a little help. Has anyone else done one of the boudoir sessions? If so, did you have fun?

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hi all, 1 month post surgery today, I've lost 40 lbs overall , 20 since surgery. I've been experiencing the dreaded 3 week stall, its frustrating but not unexpected with all the forums about it out there. I started riding my bike again, I don't like walking and started a at home exercise regime. Doing yard work is my best exercise! I'm trying to get more than 600 calories a day, it's tough when I'm not hungry, I've been focusing on getting protein. I don't miss my Diet Dr. Pepper habit, which i thought would be the hardest part. Food selection hasn't been too bad, I do like the ricotta bake, I add shrimp and mushrooms. Sugar free jello for snacks and tons of yogurt. I can start regular foods next week but I don't expect I'll be getting too adventurous until I get further out. . I've had a few colleagues ask me if I've lost weight as my face they see on Teams calls is much thinner, I've told a few and not ashamed by it. We booked a trip to Nassau, Bahamas next month and I look forward to not being the beached whale. Hope you all the best, John..
  20. Hello! My name's Rachel. I'm 35, 5'0" & cw: 214. I've been trying for the past 5 months to get my (extremely good) insurance to cover a gastric sleeve for me, but they've been running me around like crazy. I've already spent 1k out of pocket, and they would make me wait at least a year to even be able to get it, and who knows how much it'd end up costing out of pocket in the US. I ended up finding out about surgery in Tijuana and just put my deposit down for surgery on September 13th. The mental health alleviation of knowing it's on the horizon and I don't have to be on the phone with my insurance every other day crying is honestly worth paying out of pocket for me. Is anyone else around my height / weight pre-surgery, and if so how are you doing in your journey?

    Insurance Through Postop

MONTH SEVEN! I’m excited today can you tell? 1. Finished my couch to 5k app. I can run for 30 minutes straight now! I am working on slowly increasing my speed now because I might be tall but I am slow. Working on it though! 2. I AM IN ONDERLAND!!!! 198.4 this morning. I haven’t been here in probably 12 years, and even that was for a short period of time. I am so excited. I’m overweight now, and getting closer to a normal weight. 10.8 lbs down this month which is great. I’m 140 lbs down total. 28.5 BMI. I went on a roadtrip with my husband and kids and it was so good. We went on so many hikes and I was able to do everything. We went out to a winery and a brewery and I had one glass at each place and felt perfectly satisfied. But I had great energy and had a wonderful time not feeling like I was holding everyone back, or making the trip all about where I could eat next. Food was an afterthought to us having a wonderful time as a family, like it should be. Goals for this month? Well I’m coming up on the one year anniversary of starting to diet in preparation for surgery. I’d love to hit 150 lbs lost- might be a bit too ambitious at this stage, but a girl can dream. 1. Increase my speed by .5 mph running. 2. Lose 10 lbs at best, 7 lbs at least. 3. Have fun on my camping trip, and over 4th of July weekend without it all being food related.

    Feeling hungry....

Congrats on your weight loss! I am only 3 months post op, so I cannot comment directly on your experience, however, I’ve always been a big snacker so I thought I’d share the information my dietician discussed with me. She told me some people have an easier time eating 5-6 small “meals” throughout the day versus 3 regular meals. She told me it’s okay if I eat a snack or two - as long as it is protein focused or a vegetable. So things like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese sticks, etc are good snack options. The other thing I’m curious about is if you are counting your calories or logging your intake in some way? That has always helped me to see what I’ve eaten and make sure I stay within my calorie limit. Anyway, I hope you can get some answers. Keep us posted ☺️

    Guys - Calories Per Day?

49yo man here 6' 3", 382 HW, 309 SW, Sleeve 5/18/20, 216 CW I stayed around 650 cals for the first 3 months post op then up to 900 thru 6 months. Hit goal at 7 months and bumped up to 1200 cals. By 9 months out was at 2000 cals for my maintenance level. I always focused on protein and hydration. My nutritionist wanted me to increase calories sooner, but I felt with my restriction I just couldn't get there. It worked best for me to measure and log everything that I ingested. Even 1+ year out, I still do this daily. Helps keep me honest and gives me good data to look back on. YMMV, though, so find what works for you. You will still be successful at a 900 calorie as you are well under your daily calorie need (BMR). As long as you are in a deficit, you will lose weight, even with an occasional stall. Most important thing is to stick with the program and not get into bad habits. During this time you almost can't fail to lose as long as you moderate your intake and keep moving - even just walking or other light exercise. Stick with it, you can do it!

    Weight stall

that's more than I was eating at that point, but you should still be losing weight on that. Maybe give it another week or two - but yea - stalls normally don't last that long.
