I was banded on 06/11 and I took 2 weeks off from work. I have a desk job but I was still in too much pain to return to work after one week. It wasn't until about Day 10 when I started feeling like myself again. I went back to work yesterday and feel good now, besides a lil soreness around my port. But I definitely think your body needs that extra time to heal. Yes, everyone heals differently but it would be nice for you to have the option to take the time off u need especially with such a demanding job. Good Luck!!

Acid Reflux---TOO FULL
areellady replied to Emalatte's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This exact thing happened to me. EXACTLY!! It was shooting up into my throat at night, I couldn't sleep at all. I tried sleeping sitting up in a recliner, that helped a little, but not much. It hurt so bad, I put up with it for way to long, weeks, don't do it. Its only money and it will be so worth it in the end to be able to eat again. I lost weight during that time because I couldn't eat, I had to have all of my 7.75cc taken out and a barium swallow done because I waited so long to go in. They wanted to make sure everything was ok with the band. Everything was ok, I was just too tight. That was in May of 08, I am now back up to 7.25 and doing great. It took about four days after unfill for the hurting and pain in my throat to go away. When you do go in for an unfill, be sure to go liquids for a few days to let your stoma and throat heal. -
I'm slow but I'm dumb...
FeliciaLevy75 replied to Amisha's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Amisha, welcome! Love your intro. I started exercising about 2 weeks after surgery. In addition to walking every day, I started doing some very light exercise with a balance ball, but only if I didn't feel I was straining in any way. The point for me was to just move. My doc cleared me for elliptical almost right away - based on my comfort level - because of the low, low impact. As my pain decreased, I increased everything a little. I still won't do anything that requires me to lay on my abdomen, and ab exercises are done only with great care. Heal first, firm up a bit later... so says the doc. The caffeine thing is up in the air. I have gone decaf when I order coffee or coffee-based drinks, but I haven't been militant about it with my tea. Caffeine makes you hungry, which is why it is usually off the list. I rarely have it, but when I do, I stick to green tea (better for you) when I can, but I don't freak out if it's not decaf. Carbonation is evil. Cold compressed gases in a heated, closed environment (a la stomach pouches) = expansion and stretching. Hopes this helps. Again, welcome! -
Oh thanks, Ladies. I was so afraid I was going to scare everybody off with that long diatribe. MissWilde, this is awesome. I hope you keep posting here because it will be great to go through this with someone who is on the same timeline as I. Fanny, thanks for the great info. I meant Clear Liquids, not full, you're right. And I guess it is more sore than actually painful. It has improved a great deal and it's certainly manageable. I think perhaps I had high (and unrealistic) expectations of going into surgery on Wednesday and being pain free and 96 lbs lighter by Friday. If it's worth having, it's worth fighting for, right? And I think you're right about the caffeine. I didn't think about that. I was a pretty heavy tea drinker prior to surgery as well as a fairly regular soda drinker. I quit drinking the week prior to surgery because I was really trying to lose 10 lbs pre-op. So it's been a good while since I've had any caffeine. I wonder how long that goes on and if I can get a workaround?

<sigh> I havent posted in awhile. Ive just been lurking and hiding out. So today I have finally had enough. For the last 2 weeks I have been very, very bad. I have been eating non band friendly items, and I feel so guilty for my behavior. I know old habits die hard, but it seems my old habits are creeping back into my life. Those bad habits mad me weighing 363 pounds at one time. Its been 5 months since I was banded, and Ive lost 46 pounds and many inches. I dont want to go backwards. I feel like if I get this out it will help. Ive been hiding what Im eating, which is what I use to do. Last week I had a blizzard from Dairy Queen not just once, I had 4. Not in the same day though. 4 days in a row. Ive been eating more than my 4 ounces and I know it. Ive also had some fried food which I know is a NO NO! To top it all off yesterday I had a HUGE slice of pizza and a small cherry pie. Im starting to think I have lost my mind. Im getting a fill on Monday, and I know that will help, but damn what is wrong with me. I was doing really good. I thought things were on track. I know I have had a great deal of changes in my life in the last few weeks, which may be the source of my eating. My boyfriend is moving in with me in a few weeks, and he is so very supportive of my band. I guess Im scared that when he comes I wont be able to have a "treat" every now and then. Ive also lied to him about the food Ive been eating in the last 2 weeks. Besides the guilt I just feel like Im going backwards instead of forward. I dont want to hide what Im eating, I dont want to have to be all hush hush about what I put in my mouth. Ive been so bad, and Im afraid I cant stop it. I know I need to come clean with my boyfriend about what Ive eaten. I guess if I didnt tell him then I didnt have to admit I was a failure and an addict. Does the food addiction ever get easier? For the most part I do ok during the day, its the night time that gets me. I come home, go to the gym, and by the time Im ready for dinner I just go nuts. I still also get cravings for all the things I shouldnt be consuming. Im scared for myself, and my band. I paid a lot of money to get healthy and I am sabotaging myself. Any words of wisdom out there? Thanks for reading.

I use to love water but now every time I drink it I get sick to my stomach! Anybody else have that reaction? I'm 6 weeks post op and doing well.. Just can't drink plain water!!

So I’m 15 days (3weeks) post op. I am doing fine with liquids sometimes. Sometimes it’s hard to drink so much water. But what’s bothering me is that I am still having pain. And I’ve checked them, they’re healing fine, no redness, no fever. This pain is sharp above my large incision. And It feels very tender around that whole area. Had my one week apt. Last week and I felt good but then again I did take some Tylenol earlier since I did return back to work. My Dr. said the area where I am in pain is where he made some incisions from the inside. Idk. He did say that it should go away within another week. But it seems like it hasn’t gotten any better. It hurts when I’m in bed and I stretch, hurts when I reach for something and hurts when I’m sitting too long (at work). Has anyone experienced this.? HW 235 SW 218 CW 208 1st. GW 150

The 5:2 diet originated in the U.K. and gained popularity around 2012 following a BBC broadcast. It involves eating a normal diet five days a week and a very low calorie diet two days a week - 500 calories for gals and 600 for guys. It is often referred to as "intermittent fasting". There are virtually no long-term clinical studies that have been done regarding safety and effectiveness. This is a link to information originally published by the National Health Service in the U.K. in Jan 2013 and updated in May of 2013 - http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/01January/Pages/Does-the-5-2-intermittent-fasting-diet-work.aspx . The bottom line appears to be that there are more questions than answers. It would likely be a very good idea to discuss it with your surgeon before adopting the diet. It may not be suitable for folks with diabetes and possibly other pre-existing conditions. What I call the "Prime Directive" of weight loss surgery is the all important lifestyle changes. I believe that to qualify as a lifestyle change, any potential course of action must meet three criteria - it must be healthy, realistic and sustainable. It's about control, not denial. Adopting a lifestyle that focuses on proper nutrition and a calorie intake appropriate for where you are at in your journey, from rapid weight loss to maintenance of your goal weight, is perhaps a healthier, more realistic and more sustainable goal than any "diet".

Hello (questions, fear, hope and all that!)
SaraJaneQ replied to mummer's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Jeremy, Ill take a stab at most of these. Do you feel the port? Well, there are two parts to this answer. I can put my hand on my tummy and feel my port. I expect I always will. I can also feel it inside every once in a while if I stretch or lay on it, but I am only ten days out. Friends who have been banded long says that they do not feel their port from the inside now that they are healed. I am still on liquids, so I can't really speak to being "full", but I can tell you that I get to a point where I clearly feel satisfied. I get halfway through a cup of Jello and usually my body tells me it does not need anymore. Generally, pills need to be crushed or opened during liquid phase unless they are very small. Your doc may have you temporarily change meds too. My acid reflux was controled(ish) by two prescriptions and right now I am on one chewable OTC and having no reflux. My doc swears that there are no long term restrictions. Im a nervous girl, so I will probably protect my port for a long time, but nope, my doc says no worries. The pain is different for everyone. When I woke up from surgery I had an AWFUL backache. But just a normal really bad backache. I got myself up to walk about a half hour after going to my room and was in and out of bed at least once an hour that first night. By one week out I could just about sleep on my tummy again (at a week and a half out I can mostly sleep on it, but if I lean wrong my port aches a little). I took my prescription pain killer my first day home but since then I just take tylenol. now thats ME. Some people hurt worse, but it seems to be unusual that people are in real agony, just different levels of discomfort. -
The instruction I got was about four weeks post op- but I feel so excited to start losing weight- I'm dying to get working -but at the same time I want to make sure it's safe and that I don't hurt myself Any advice?

My preop diet consisted of a protein shake breakfast and lunch then dinner I was allowed 4oz of protein and a veggie and then of course you can have all the sugar free jello and popsicles for snacks I always stayed under 700-800 calories daily you'll have a headache the first couple of days but just take some Tylenol and it will pass after the first few days it really wasn't hard you can do it !!!!! I lost 16 lbs on my two week preop diet I felt prepared after surgery on my liquid diet :-)

I can walk through an amusment park with my kids without running out of breath. I can shop in the "misses" section and not have to search for the "women's" section, usually in the back corners of the stores. I can learn to eat to live and not live to eat. My list can go on and on but I'l stop at three.

1st Consult Appt Wed. 12/21
Finding_Stacy replied to az062217vsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck! I, too, have my first appointment tomorrow with the surgeon, dietician, and psychologist. I'm doing my final run around today to pick up a dvd from the radiologist of some tests I've done last week. When I called my insurance two weeks ago, they said I'm basically approved. I hit all the criteria they need so here's hoping the surgeon will only ask for the minimal outside what I've already had done, and I can get this surgery done in six weeks or less. -
goal 1st week of lap band. lose 10 goal with lapband after that..lose 16-20 lbs a month. be sure to hit 100lbs down by august 1st then.

I so hear you! I am soo incredibly lazy and it pisses me off that I am like this! I havent gone to the gym in a few weeks and I have absolutely no excuse. Except this week since my daughter was off school I couldnt go with her. I'm going to start again tomorrow when she is at school ... but yes, its so easy to get frustrated with ourselves when we know we need to be doing something and we're not ... good luck to you and hopefully we both will get back to work on this!

Does milk separate in your pouch?
lotzasunshine replied to Kathy6323's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have been having this problem lately, and just threw up chunks today. It has happened several times now but not for about a month. I think mine might be stress related. First my father passed away and that was the first time it happened. Now this week my DH just found out he is being laid off. So I guess I just wanted to know from the OP if this stops, or if it is something I will struggle with for a while? -
Cannot decide what to do.
James Marusek replied to achelln's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 3 years and 1 month ago. I lost a lot of weight and have maintained the weight loss. I am happy with my surgery. The reason why I had the surgery was because of my health conditions that were getting worse as I aged. Many of these health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, severe acid reflux (Gerd)) went into remission within two weeks after surgery and have remained there. -
Water Makes Me Nauseous!
drewmon replied to IweightNoMore's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh weird, I just posted that today I could finally drink water again. I'm also 6 weeks post op. I had just tried a few days ago and couldn't. Hopefully you'll be able to very soon! -
I didn't plan on telling them other than gallbladder surgery (that was removed too). But the director wanted me to go to Haiti the week I was to return, a month out. There was no way in hell I would go to Haiti within six months, so I had to tell her the full extent of my surgery but made it clear she was not to share this info and as far as I can tell she, nor my supervisor have. Frustrated No Restriction! Large Band???
Summerrain replied to SabrinaS's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's a frustrating process, you definitely need more fill to get to green zone. Hopefully you're close. I was there for two whole weeks and this last week I've noticed I've slipped out if the zone. I seem to be loosing a lot ofy weight Fromm tummy area do that's affecting my fills. I'm going in this Tuesday for another very small fill to get me back in the zone. Hang in there, there is no magic amount of fill that is the same for everyone. Some people are fine with a few cc's others need more. Fingers crossed you get your full next appointment and it makes a difference for you. Great weightloss so far too!! -
What my doctor says about stalls...
McButterpants posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was lucky enough to have two doctor's appointments this week - my three month follow up with my local bariatric doctor and my PCP. I lamented to my bariatric doctor about my stall. How I haven't lost anything in the past 18 days. I was kind of whiney about it. She just looked at me like I grew a 2nd head. She said, "You're going great. You've lost a total of 50 pounds. What was your expectation?" I got to thinking about that - really, what number was going to make me happy? If it was 53 pounds would I automatically to over the happy side? What about 63 pounds, is that the magic number? She pointed out all the good things going on - lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, my ability to walk seemingly forever pain-free, my increased energy level, etc. All good stuff, right? So why am I so hard on myself about the number on the scale. She asked how often I'm weighing - I'm back to weighing every day. She told me to stop that, but I weighed again today. The best thing she said about my weight was this - "If you graph your weight loss, the line won't be linear, it's going to be more of stair step." And you know, she's right. I graphed my weight loss to date and it looks like stair steps. This morning I went to my PCP whom I haven't seen since late-October, about 2 weeks before surgery. Her jaw dropped when she saw me. She cannot believe the difference in my appearance. Then we started going over the labs and she was amazed. She actually said "You are glowing! You look happy. Your eyes are clear and bright. The transformation is amazing." Sometimes we get so hard on ourselves because we're not losing a the rate in which we think we should. "I'm a slow loser!" "So-and-so is losing so much faster than me!" We need to STOP! This is marathon, not a sprint. I didn't get to 256 pounds overnight, I'm certainly not going to lose it overnight. Sometimes it's good to step back and look at things from a different angle. -
Not so Newbie, but in need of support.......
cheryl2586 replied to Ice Maiden's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had chronic shoulder pain for one entire year. Until I had my first fill it finally went away sometimes it comes back. Sometimes the position of the band is not laying correctly on the nerve causing that pain. It horrible to live with I know. How many fill s have you had? I have only had two in a year and three months so the pain seems to have subsided. I would definitely see if you can find another surgeon but unfortunately that pain may never go away. -
Are you eating too many carbs? (starches like potato, rice, corn and pasta, breads, crackers, chips and sugary stuff) If so you should get this stuff out of your system. Comletely cut out these items for at least a week or two. Eat protein with colorful fresh veggies and a little fruit. Then after a few weeks add back healthy carbs like 100% whole wheat breads, cereals and oatmeal. Eat them in moderation and always with a protein. The more starchy carbs you have in your diet the more you are going to crave.
