    June Surgeries

I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm hungry all the time, although I can't eat very much at once. Has your hunger settled down? Everyone always talked about not being hungry after surgery and then they just tell me I'm not really hungry!
  2. I'm a week out from go-time! Today starts the all-liquids phase of my pre-op and about a month of being liquidy total. This afternoon is my last appointment with my surgeon before the main event. Looking forward to it!

Like others said, give it some time, you are still very early on and things will settle to a NEW normal. Water: i had pobs the first week with water…tasted so metallic to me. Found that in could stomach it if it was hot/very warm. Then a few weeks later, could only stomach it if it was ice cold. Now i can drink all kinds if temperatures. Further, the first couple weeks i could only get down tiny sips . Then suddenly I was able to gulp down lots (found this out by mistake when i was super thirsty and didn’t think to sip). Gurgling: I’m one of the ones that this still happens to years out (ill be 3 years end of this month). Not as often and loud as before, but still. It sounds like i have a swamp thing living in there. Hang in there, a year from now you can laugh at urself looking fab in a bikini. Good Luck! ❤️

    Weight loss just stop

I am currently going through the same thing. I have been stuck for about 2 weeks now. It is very frustrating even though you know it is somewhat common. I am barely eating anything (less than 800 calories) drinking plenty (80-90 ounces) and exercising 45-60 minutes per day, walking. I am keeping protein around 80 or so per day and virtually no carbs. It really gets discouraging when you do these things and do not see the scale move. Yes, I know, don't weight yourself every day.........it is still an issue, even more so if you wait a week and still see no losses.

    Post-op Anxiety

I think that's pretty normal. I'm just a few weeks out from surgery, but I am already nervous about this. Have you considered talking to a bariatric therapist? Also, agree with above posters about tracking your intake and keeping up with exercise. While exercise does not have much role in losing weight, it's been shown to be pretty effective at keeping weight off - provided your eating is in check.

    Weight loss just stop

Like @Hop_Scotch said, stalls are common and a normal part of any type of weight loss, not just with surgery. Sometimes you just have to keep doing what you are doing. Sometimes it can be helpful to track your intake for a few days to see if you're eating more than you think you are - like on MyFitnessPal. Make sure you're drinking enough, following all your surgery center's guidelines, etc. Plus, weight loss always slows down as you get further from your surgery date and closer to your goal weight. You can't expect to keep losing at the same rate as the first month. Don't Panic!

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I feel a pain on my right side near the largest incision whether I'm walking or not... I feel like the weight loss is slower than expected, but I know it depends a lot on your starting weight. I have lost 15 lbs in the 3 weeks since surgery, so I think that's fine. My surgery BMI was 40 I believe, so I think you won't see huge weight loss unless you had a really high BMI. Plus, if you lost a lot of weight prior to surgery, you won't see much weight loss right away. Also, this is not a race... many people who lose slowly can lose all the weight they want to, it just happens over time.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Two weeks!?! For bypass? Wow. I had the sleeve and work a high stress job in mental health and had to beg to go back in two weeks. My surgeon requires 4-6 weeks off.

    Weight loss just stop

Just stop or slow down? Neither is unusual...there will be stalls (that can last weeks) and as the weeks/months progress and you body weight is reduced continued weight loss will slow down a bit. It would be useful though if you completed your profile (not that you have to but gives people context when responding) - date of surgery, type of surgery, surgery day weight, current weight, height etc.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Had VSG surgery 9/14 in Los Gatos, CA…did have 10-day preop diet of prescribed high protein shakes/soups/liquids plus hearty salad daily until clear liquids only day before procedure. Full three weeks out and trying to find my way with transition to blenderized foods and more than just liquids/purées, but definitely find some items don’t sit well and feel very heavy. Was walking too much and experiencing burning sensation on right side near largest incision so I backed off, but feeling like weight loss is slower than expected.

Will you feel like you did before surgery? No. You won’t feel the same as you did because you’ve had pretty major surgery, changed your digestive system & you’re losing weight so every week you’ll experience new things you couldn’t do before. For a few weeks you’ll experience post surgical issues like rumbling, spasms, changes in your taste buds, nausea, discomfort, etc. but these pass as you heal & recover so you will feel better from that perspective. You may experience low energy, low blood pressure, foamies, dumping, hormonal fluctuations, etc. Some will pass after a couple of months, others once your weight stabilises. You’ll also discover how your new tummy works & identify how long to wait between eating & drinking, what doesn’t sit well, gives you the foamies, etc. I still gurgle but I usually know why like eating dairy often causes it for me. It’s an individual thing. During surgery, they pump you full of air & fluids so many people come out of hospital weighing more than they were the day they were admitted. You will lose at your own rate. There is not a single right amount to lose each week. There are average rates but some are naturally slow losers & some are fast losers. Losing 4lbs in your first week is pretty darn good. Remember, it’s not a competition. You’ve never experienced anything like this before so feeling unlike yourself & anxious about things is not uncommon. It will be ok. Give yourself time to heal & recover & to work out your new eating plan, your tummy’s likes & dislikes, etc.

    Food Before and After Photos

I’m contemplating a career move because my current position is giving me ALL the stress that’s lead to weekly baking. It just seems like each week it gets bigger. So this is what we have so far… Jalapeño cheese bread (yeast edition) Jalapeño cheese quick bread Chocolate espresso cookies Chocolate s’more cookies Sugar cookies with mini M&Ms Kitchen sink cookies Amigthalota (Greek almond cookies) Oh, and I currently have the stuff waiting to make pumpkin pie macarons…. …. I did eat a little less than half a chocolate espresso cookie and almost half a M&M cookie and an amigthalota after dinner of which I’m still under calories for the day. 🤦‍♀️

    Post-op Anxiety

I still track everything I eat at 6.5 years out. I also exercise regularly - cardio 4x a week, weights 2x a week.

    Five years!

I finally accepted that the "mindful eating" I'd practiced before and immediately after surgery wasn't just to be practiced then, but a whole new lifestyle. I guess I thought that the endless chewing, the limits on drinking around meal times, the "eat the protein first" were just caveats to help you get through the shock of surgery. However it's really how I eat all the time. I have learned to pay attention when I am eating- no TV, no computer, no reading- so that I pay attention to what I am eating and how much of it. I have a 20 minute eating window; when it's been 20 mins, the plate goes back to the kitchen. If not, I'll pick at supper over the next hour or two and eat the plateful, when in reality I was already full and didn't need to graze for the evening. I don't eat much carb- rice is hell for me, it swells inside and that's painful. Same with pizza crust, and most breads, so I just avoid them. I still do a protein shake for breakfast (Syntrax nectars with either water or unsweetened almond milk). Lunch is harder- sometimes cheese and crackers, sometimes soup. I'm not usually hungry during the day, but I will sag and drag after 3pm if I haven't had something to eat. Supper is usually some form of protein and maybe some veg. I also have dessert a couple of times a week, usually about a 1/4c of ice cream. I'll also have the occasional adult beverage, but I can't hold a lot of volume, so it's not too often and not too much- but a girl's gotta live! I think mostly what has worked best for me is mindful eating, small portions, choosing what to eat instead of just eating some of everything at a meal. Tonight we are having pizza and salad for supper (daughter got married on Saturday and we have quite a few leftover pizzas). I had the cheese and toppings from two pieces and ate them carefully. Can't do salad- it fills me up quickly and makes me feel gaggy, so although I love it I limit it to about 2 bites- just enough to satisfy the urge. Who knew I'd ever say the words "I miss salad?" but I DO!

    Hungry or Full?

Yes!! That’s my stomach exactly. lol. It’s so confusing. So I’m not the only one. Thank you so much. That may it. I will definitely ask my doctor or nutritionist this week cause I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to for the most part but I just could not comprehend some of the feelings and especially the growling after I eat. Thank you sooo much.

    Hungry or Full?

My nutritionist told me to eat six small meals a day but I really can’t. I have a protein shake when I wake up and maybe get a third of it down, then I try to do an egg white scramble a few hours later, then for lunch I’ve been just sticking to soups, then I may try and finish the protein shake or have a sugar free pudding. Then I don’t eat until dinner. And that is totally dependent on how I’m feeling. Maybe I really am hungry and I’m scared to over eat. I honestly never had a food problem until this surgery. I could not lose weight after my 4th baby then I gained 30 pounds last year after a total hysterectomy and the extra 30 pounds was putting too much pressure on my fragile joints( I had a broken back and broke my ankle three times) after I left the military. So I felt like once I hit 227 it was time for a change. But I like to think I always was a practical eater, now I’m feeling obsessed with what I’m supposed to eat or how I’m supposed to feel. I just want to feel “normal”. But I just feel a lot discomfort now matter how much or little I eat. And the Crazy thing, I don’t know if the person posting about this has this too, my stomach growls at me after I eat. Never before. Idk what that is about.

    Hungry or Full?

Idk if this helps but the NP told me that we are supposed to eat to prevent hunger rather than to eat when we are hungry. Since surgery I have been eating by the clock and it seems to work for me. Between three meals and two snacks I eat a small portion every three hours and I know when I feel hungry between meals it must be head hunger cause I just ate.

    OOTD

Took my 18 y.o. to their very first concert on 9/10/21 for an early birthday gift... went to see Between the Buried and me. Their all time favorite group.. (heavy metal). They just turned 18 this past weekend. We had a blast. I purchased this outfit from hot topic back in August. Its a Junior's XL. And by the time I got to wear it, it was a bit large on me. But over the 30 day exchange period. But that's OK. I did go back to HT and buy another cute skirt to wear to Badflower in a couple of weeks...a junior size L. I cannot wait for that show because the following morning s my skin removal surgery !!

    Post op appointment

I had my pre-op a week before surgery. My post-op was 2 weeks after my surgery. Based on the half-life of phentermine, it's good to stop (at the very least) 4 days before surgery because there are studies that it causes dangerous anesthesia problems (hypotension).

You're not failing; all of this is normal. You should ask your clinic for anti-nausea meds like Zofran. You can flavor water with Crystal Light or whatever other brand you like. 4 lbs is a lot in just a week! There are a lot of new sounds and sensations you will feel in your tummy. I could not tolerate the chewable vitamins. I gagged every time and they stuck in my teeth. I tried two different brands. After two weeks I switched to capsules, but I have sleeve not RNY, so talk to your clinic. To get the water and protein shakes down, just keep it right next to you or in your hand and sip every few minutes if you can. It adds up. Focus on the water/broth/crystal light before the protein at first. You got this!

I'm 2 weeks post-op and I can absolutely promise you, it DOES get better. By the end of the first week, I felt like I had really turned a corner and my nausea and pain were nearly gone. I was getting more fluids down and felt more human again. Healing isn't linear though, so you really can't compare to anyone. You aren't ahead or behind, you are exactly where your body needs to be. As for the gurgling, I think that's a WLS thing that never really goes away completely My stomach makes all kinds of bizarre sounds now, but thankfully no pain or nausea anymore. As for fluids, try using a sugar free water flavoring, jello, broth, or sugar free popsicles. Having a variety of options helps. Its extremely important to do your best to stay hydrated; right now that's your priority. Give yourself lots of grace and remember that this is one day at time. You're doing great!

    Post op appointment

I forgot to mention that I was told that I had to stop birth control pills six weeks before surgery, so they told me to stop when they scheduled my surgery, which was six weeks before the surgery date.

    Post op appointment

My pre-op appointment was twelve days before surgery, but could have been later. I got generic instructions (stop taking NSAIDs three weeks before, go off caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine, etc.) with the initial packet but then I got a call two days before surgery with specific instructions, and an even more specific call the night before telling me what time to show up and confirming everything was set.
  24. So I'm three weeks out and generally feel great, but lately I feel a pulling, and if I bend forward, I feel a sort of minor stabbing pain, just to the right of my navel. This did not happen right after the initial pain wore off. Normal? Is this just the nerves re-growing?
  25. Hi all. I had gastric bypass last week on Sept 28. Surgery went well but I had one very bad day/night of nausea so I'm already basically a day behind. I'm in need of some encouragement that it gets better. When do I feel "normal" again? I understand there will be pain and my nausea seems unusually high but I can deal with it. But is it normal to constantly feel gurgling and movement (for lack of a better word) in my new stomach? Water tastes terrible... I have a hard time getting down the vitamins and protein shakes. I've only lost about 4 lbs. I feel like I'm far behind where I should be. I have my follow up appointment tomorrow so maybe they will be able to set my mind at ease. I would just like to hear that I'm not failing and others have had the same response.
